On this episode of the Life in the Carolinas podcast, Carl once again sits down with Tabitha Hudler, Director of The Walker Center at Wilkes Community College. Coming up on the 40th year since the founding of The Walker Center, Tabitha is excited to announce the 2022-2023 season of acts kicking off on September 9. Tabitha gives a special shoutout to Dailey & Vincent and The Haggard Brothers as the most well-received acts of the 2021-2022 lineup. She speaks of last year as being nothing but an all-around success as every attendee was just happy to be in community again after a year of lockdowns. This year's lineup includes Croce Plays Croce on September 9; Lonestar on October 28; Charles Billingsley on December 1; comedian Karen Mills on February 23; Malpass Brothers, Appalachian Road Show, and Teea Goans on March 10; and Beach Boy Tribute Sail On on May 10. Tabitha talks about her favorite part of the job: the Spring and Fall school shows. She says that the Walker Center aims to give kids the experience of education and entertainment all at once, and hopefully even plant seeds within a few who might one day aspire for a career in stage performance. Finally, Tabitha reveals her involvement in organizing this year's MerleFest, offering a tease of the special collaborations set to provide an exciting festival this April 27-30, 2023. “We know that life throws obstacles constantly,” says Tabitha. “But in that timeframe, when we are either working an event or just enjoying an event, it does give us a time to reflect on some good times.”   Learn more about The Walker Center at www.walkercenteronline.org.

On this episode of the Life in the Carolinas podcast, Carl sits down with Tabitha Hudler, Director of The Walker Center at Wilkes Community College. She celebrates the theater's huge and intensely loyal customer base, demonstrated by the 4000 volunteers that show up every year for MerleFest, not to mention the high volume of patrons who have availed of The Walker Center's Lifetime Patron and Season Ticket programs. This customer loyalty was, in part, directly responsible for the theater's ability to thrive over the past two, turbulent years. Since the theater's inception in 1984, there has been a lot of passion among folks in the rural community of Wilkesboro to develop a platform for the many talented local entertainers. Tabitha says, “Because of the passion and the dedication not just then, but all through the years—that is why we're so successful.” Listen in as Carl and Tabitha go on to reflect on the importance of music and theater in any community and why a visit to The Walker Center to experience the best of Wilkesboro is absolutely worth it!

"MerleFest, considered one of the premier music festivals in the country, serves as an annual homecoming for musicians and music fans. Held on the campus of Wilkes Community College in Wilkesboro, North Carolina, MerleFest was founded in 1988 in memory of the late Eddy Merle Watson, son of American music legend Doc Watson. MerleFest is a celebration of ‘traditional plus' music, a unique mix of music based on the traditional, roots-oriented sounds of the Appalachian region, including bluegrass and old-time music, and expanded to include Americana, country, blues, rock and many other styles. The festival hosts numerous artists, performing on 13 stages during the course of the four-day event. The annual event has become the primary fundraiser for the WCC Foundation, funding scholarships, capital projects and other educational needs." - https://merlefest.org/

On this episode of the Life in the Carolina’s podcast, Carl is joined by 16-year-old Liam Purcell, a talented musician with a passion for playing, writing, and creating music. Liam got his start at the age of 6 learning guitar through the JAM (Junior Appalachian Musicians) program after school. By the time Liam was in 3rd grade, his parents realized that his talent needed to be nurtured, so they began home-schooling him to free him up to pursue his music more seriously. He is now taking some on-campus classes at Wilkes Community College and touring with his band. While he plans to pursue a musical degree at a college or university later on, Liam states that once he turns 18, his goal is to begin touring full time. Liam grew up in Deep Gap, North Carolina, and while his music has taken him all over America and even to Argentina, he will always consider this pocket of Western North Carolina home. He feels that this region of the Appalachian mountains is an excellent place to learn about old time and bluegrass music from musicians whose skills and knowledge of music have been passed down for generations. Liam has been exposed to many other genres of music and he has dabbled in some, and he has come to realize that learning old time and bluegrass music first has allowed him to easily acclimate to other genres more easily. When Cane Mill Road was given the opportunity to represent American bluegrass music at the World Music Festival in Argentina, Liam’s eyes were opened to the grand diversity of music around the world and he was also affirmed because of the incredible support the band received from the representatives of the other countries. It was during this trip that Liam committed to reading music so his skills could be more beneficial for his future endeavors in composition and music theory. Liam plays the fiddle, mandolin, banjo, guitar, bass, lap steel, dobro, electric guitar, and electric bass, and over the years he has learned that music is the same regardless of the instrument. The breadth of his instrumental knowledge and mastery has been crucial to his arranging and songwriting pursuits as well as his ability to teach younger kids how to play. This passing down of knowledge is what makes the music scene in the Carolinas unique. Liam emphasizes the importance of the community building that occurs at local jam sessions as well as the collective push towards continual improvement that comes in formal and informal settings. Liam’s career so far in music has taught him valuable life lessons as well in the areas of relationship building and maintenance as well as the development of internal motivations to keep improving. Liam’s band, Cane Mill Road, has put out 2 studio albums and 1 live album, and he is grateful for his parents and brother for supporting him every step of the way.   Connect with Liam: https://canemillroad.com/   Connect with us: http://www.lifeinthecarolinas.com/ https://www.lifeinthecarolinaspodcast.com/   Carl@lifeinthecarolinas.com   Liam Purcell appeared on Life in the Carolinas in 2015 at the age of 12. Josh Wyant grew up playing baseball in North Carolina and was never the standout player but always had a passion for the game and worked hard at getting better. He was a three sport athlete between cross country, baseball and swimming and as college grew closer, he was told his best shot was at running. In his senior year of high school he moved to a new high school and was given the opportunity to improve himself to the level he needed through a coach who did more for him in that one season than any other coach in his life, Coach Pete Hardee. Between Josh's hard work and dedication and Coach Hardee's guidance, he was able to pursue a college baseball career with stops at Winston Salem State,Wilkes Community College and LeMoyne Owen College. Although these college baseball programs were within some of the lowest ranked conferences in NCAA baseball, Josh was able to put up some good numbers, even when playing some of the top schools in the nation during non conference games. "Never in my life was I a highly recruited player so I basically made the decision to go overseas as soon as I heard about it," replied Josh when asked about why he decided to play overseas. "I was well aware pro ball was never going to be an option for me and if I was going to keep playing baseball after college I was going to have to make my own opportunities just like I had done for college." During the fall of his senior year (2013) of college baseball Josh heard about the option to play in Europe after stumbling upon the IBC website while doing some research and signed up without even thinking much about it. However to Josh's surprise, within a few weeks he had emails from clubs from five different countries about coming to play.......
