Show Notes Episode 441: “A Few Good Lawyers” Movie Night: A Few Good Men This week Host Dave Bledsoe angrily insists the bartender “can't handle the truth” when asked when he might be paying his bar tab. (They dragged Dave outside while screaming: “You WANT me at that bar, you NEED me at this bar” Again.) On the show this week, it is What the HELL Movie Night, we are talking about 1992's “A Few Good Men” Along the way we discover that Dave has opinions about the women and men in our nation's National Guard. (Like he is such a hero?) Then we dive right into the story of a bartender with a dream (Yeah, that Dave would find another bar) and that dream is of Hollywood! We meet a young Aaron Sorkin who wrote a script on bar napkins that became a Hollywood blockbuster. We follow along as Meathead from All In the Family takes up the story and casts the sexiest people to ever wear a US Navy uniform in a movie about the bastard step-children of the Navy. (The editorial stance of this podcast is firmly pro-Marine, if for no other reason than Dave still owes some former Marines drinks from back in the day) We close with an examination of why the Marines did NOT like A Few Good Men. (Tom Cruise should have been a Marine Lawyer) Our Sponsor this week is the Navy National Guard, because Oklahoma should have a Navy too! We open with the trailer for A Few Good Men and close with Town Mountain who invoke their Fifth Amendment rights! TOWN MOUNTAIN is the popular North Carolina band of alt-country rebellion and honky-tonk attitude pushed through the hardscrabble Southern Appalachian lens. Formed 15 years ago by Robert Greer and Jesse Langlais on a ridge high about Asheville's skyline, their latest release LINES IN THE LEVEE presents a renewed sense of self for the band's sound. THE LOCAL HONEYS have been part of the Kentucky music scene for almost a decade now. Duo Linda Jean Stokley and Montana Hobbs speak through their music the struggle and complexity of contemporary Appalachian life. Their newest self-titled album has rollicking banjo meets overdriven guitar hooks, and blue collar rural grit met with lush melodies and nimble harmonies. SALLY HICKS is a 16 year old musician from Tellico Plains, TN where she is also a member of their SongFarmers chapter.

Williams has spent the last 15 years touring around the US, the UK, Western Europe and Australia, blending the roots music spectrum in his own style. He's opened for Taj Mahal, The Wood Brothers, Dom Flemons, CAAMP, John Paul White, Town Mountain, John Craigie, Rachel Baiman and Lucy Daucus, and has performed at festival stages on three continents. William's debut record As I Go Ramblin' Around made the International Folk Radio DJ Charts in 2019 with the #6 Top Album, #7 Top Song. His critically acclaimed sophomore release Folk Songs For Old Times' Sake unveiled in November of 2021 and has been heralded by the likes of Grammy-winning musician David Holt who said: ‘With tasteful guitar arrangements and a voice that draws you right in, Nicholas' recordings roll along like a mountain stream.” https://nicholasedwardwilliams.com/about/ In this week's “From the Vault” segment, OHR producer Jeff Glover offers a 1981 archival recording of Ozark original Sam Younger performing the tune “Mississippi Sawyer,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. Episode 228: One day during AmericanaFest 2022 I visited the headquarters of leading label New West Records to catch up with their two newest band signings - bands that fit on the label and in an episode with each other. 49 Winchester, school friends from tiny Castlewood, VA, had a breakout year while releasing Fortune Favors The Bold. Town Mountain began 15 years ago as a trad bluegrass band that writes its own fine songs. Recently they've added a drummer and let their sound find new levels of energy and groove. Together, the bands offer a look at how country rock is faring in Appalachia.

For a place as remote as Ashe County, NC, you could be forgiven for overlooking it as a wellspring for musical talent. But music seems to flow naturally out of the Appalachian mountains in and around towns like Sparta, NC, where artists like Brian Swenk grew up. Our recent episode on banjo player Tray Wellington gives another example of how the region punches above its weight with its long track record of producing great roots music artists: Frank Blevins and his Tarheel Rattlers, the Carolina Night Hawks, Clarence “Tom” Ashley, and Ola Belle Reed all hail from Ashe County as well. Even though many artists mentioned above moved away, they never forgot their homeplace. Recently I witnessed both Tray Wellington and Brian Swenk returning to the mountains to make music and give back to the cultural traditions that gave them their start, when both were a key part of the inaugural Boonerang Music & Arts Festival in nearby Boone, NC in June 2022. There, Brian came back to the town where he attended Appalachian State University as a key part of the team that produced the festival, which went swimmingly. Town Mountain and Acoustic Syndicate, both featured on previous episodes of this series, were headliners, and along with many other artists and bands with connections to the region, they helped make the weekend a winner with fans and critics alike. Brian's work was all behind the scenes there, but he is no stranger to the stage, with years of experience playing banjo in the band Big Daddy Love. Brian Swenk Here, Brian talks about the music business, his rock and roll roots and how they find their way into Big Daddy Love's music, we pick up on a conversation started in our episode on Tray Wellington with the influence of rap and hip hop in roots music, and more, including Brian's story about how a painting of his band playing live sold for six figures. Plus, we sample several songs by Big Daddy Love, which describes itself as an “Appalachian Rock” band. Songs heard in this episode:“Smoke Under The Water” by Big Daddy Love, from This Time Around“Down From the Mountain” by Big Daddy Love, from Let It Grow, excerpt“Air Bellows Gap” by Big Daddy Love, from Let It GrowThank you for listening to this episode, and we would be even more grateful were you to share this with someone. Grizzly Goat's music is as the band's name suggests, undomesticated. Grizzly's blend of folk-rock spans the entire breadth of the Americana genre; from soft and sincere campfire ballads to rocking electric harmonica solos on top of pounding drums and flailing banjo. The band is hardworking and tireless. They've brought their rootsy compositions from coast to coast in their white passenger van. Whether at a festival or a small scale BBQ joint, Grizzly Goat's aim is to connect with their audience on an individual level, building a relationship with each listener. Specifically, the band has supported acts such as Greensky Bluegrass, Jim Avett, River Whyless, Town Mountain, Jamestown Revival, and Brett Dennen, along with playing at such festivals as the John Hartford Memorial Fest, Treefort Music Festival, Mayesfest, Forest Fest, Decatur BBQ Blues and Bluegrass Fest, Zion Canyon Music Fest, and the kick-off for the Cold Mountain Music Festival. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Banjo player Jesse Langlais chuckled when he first saw the question about Town Mountain as a bluegrass finishing school. It is true that the band has had a lot of members come and go over their 11+ years, and many have done quite well after their tenure in this five piece from Asheville, NC. It is also true that once you are Town Mountain member, there is a reunion somewhere in your future. There is never a last ride in the van: once you play in the band, you are like family. Arthur Grimes buck dances with Town Mountain at MerleFest in 2018 As tightly knit and warm as they are, there is also an edge and a swagger to Town Mountain. All five members are well versed in the bluegrass tradition, but they also have some rock and roll in them, and the dexterity to weave these influences together seamlessly. With the addition of drums, and a song co-written by and featuring Tyler Childers on their latest album New Freedom Blues, they show their ability to stay true to the music of icons like Bill Monroe and Jimmy Martin while building something altogether new. I spoke with Jesse, mandolin player Phil Barker and bassist Zach Smith, their producer Caleb Klauder and others in this episode which features album tracks and live tunes from the band. Plus, a wee bit of The Police and R.E.M. It really does make sense once you hear it, we promise. Thanks to the friendly folks at The Bywater in Asheville for hosting our interview session, to Sarah Bennett at All Eyes Media for helping set up the interview and for being on the show herself, and to Caleb Klauder and Jerry McNeely for taking the time to talk with me also. Thanks to Osiris for carrying us on their network, and to Bluegrass Planet Radio for airing this series too. We appreciate everyone who listens, and especially those who spread awareness for this series and the artists and music professionals we profile. Giving us a good rating and comment on podcast platforms like Apple Podcast makes us quite grateful, and we would count you as a total rock star if you joined us as a patron or sponsor. Next up? A bit of a departure, as we take a deep dive into the song “Wagon Wheel” and talk with artists who played it. Drop us a line if you have a story to tell! - Joe Kendrick
Town Mountain is an independent-minded steward of classic bluegrass, but their take on Appalachian music is infused with a modern-day feel that allows the group freedom of expression. With Town Mountain's newest album, New Freedom Blues, the band discovered a way to build off their past to craft something new and exciting, and so authentic in terms of who they are as musicians and as people. Banjo/vocalist Jesse Langlais, mandolin/vocalist Phil Barker, and bass player Zach Smith share what life on the road means to the band, change, bluegrass and how their creative process unfolds.

"Rob and Seth take over the patio at Arden’s Garden in the Little Five Points section of Atlanta to interview, and even enjoy some brief performances from Jon Stickley. This Chapel Hill/Durham-based acoustic musician may very well owe some of his fiery approach to bands indigenous to “The Triangle” (Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill) like Polvo and SharkQuest. Stickley talks about their influence, and about his days drumming in punk bands. He would meet Andy “Crawdad” Thorn (Larry Keel Experience, Leftover Salmon) in high school, and when Thorn gave Jon some Bela Fleck and David Grisman cds, Jon’s life was forever changed. Even while playing in punk bands and his own indie rock band (an experience that would ultimately be key in his songwriting development), Jon would become a fervent fan and student of bluegrass and the mandolin. While an opportunity to be an assistant park ranger in Alaska did not allow him to accept Anders Beck’s (Greensky Bluegrass) initial invitation for him to join Broke Mountain, he would eventually join them on guitar. He also revisited the mandolin to tour with North Carolina bands the Biscuit Burners and Town Mountain. However a fellow musician noticed his strong love of the guitar and encouraged Jon to focus on that. Jon agreed and would in turn decide to start his own band. Around this same time Billy Gilmore (Grass Is Dead) introduced Jon to Lyndsay Pruitt. Pruitt had toured with Black Mozart Ensemble, a side project of Flecktones drummer, “Futureman.” Pruitt would join Jon’s trio, and her playing quickly became an immediate influence on Jon’s songwriting. We also learn about the unusual residency their new drummer Hunter “JamChops” Deacon experienced. The band not only does more “off the map” improvisation since Deacon joined, but some of these improvisations have also become seeds for future compositions. During the closing segment, Seth and Rob share some of their experiences at this year’s Electric Forest festival and we are treated to two songs from the Jon Stickley Trio cd, Maybe Believe. wTnS is Produced by Rob Turner and Engineered by Josh Thane of Wonder Dog Sounds Studio. www.joshthaneproductions.com www.wonderdogsounds.com All social media management, promotion and website maintenance/building done by Harris Sullivan. wTnS is a proud partner of the Osiris Podcast Network. The Great Smoky Mountains of Western NC are ancient but alive. The region gave us Charlie Poole, Doc Watson and now a cadre of diverse and important bands and artists working the many strains of regional roots in the venues around Asheville. Town Mountain is doing that for bluegrass music with a sound that's old school and songs that tell a new generation's story. Lead singer Robert Greer is my guest. The scene around Asheville boasts dozens of bands and artists, songwriting retreats, the basics of a music business - and most importantly an identity. It's a scene that as well as anywhere in the nation enriches tradition, cherishing the ancient tones while letting new expression flourish. It's scenic, sonic and significant. And at the heart of that scene is the bluegrass music of Town Mountain. The 43 year old singer and guitar player grew up in South Georgia and then Brevard NC where he got to know some of today's top regional bluegrassers under some very unexpected circumstances. We'll get into that. And we'll get into the recent album Southern Crescent as well.
