This SPECIAL EPISODE is a tribute to RICK DAVIES, who died this past week at age 81. Rick was the founder of, and one of the two lead singer-songwriters of, Supertramp, one of the greatest bands of the rock era. In 1979 the band hit their zenith with the album “Breakfast In America”, which sold over 20 million records.Rick played keyboards and wrote several of the band's greatest hits. His songs had a blusier, edgier sound to them than those of Roger Hodgson, the other lead songwriter, who wrote more pop oriented songs which he sang in his high tenor voice. Together, however, these two guys provided the yin and yang of Supertramp which defined the band and made them a success.Rick's first band, called Rick's Blues, included Gilbert O'Sullivan on the drums. In August 1969 he placed an ad in Melody Maker seeking to form a new band, and Roger Hodgson auditioned and joined. Supertramp's first successful album was 1974's “Crime Of The Century”. It contained “Bloody Well Right”, Rick's first hit.  The band's breakthrough album was “Breakfast In America”, which contained another Davies hit, “Goodbye Stranger”. Like most rock bands, however, creative differences and jealousies eventually split up Supertramp. But for the time that they were together they were a fantastic, creative band - one of the best of the rock era - under the leadership of Rick Davies.------------------------------------------The Follow Your Dream Podcast:Top 1% of all podcasts with Listeners in 200 countries!Click here for All Episodes Click here for Guest List Click here for Guest Groupings Click here for Guest TestimonialsClick here to Subscribe Click here to receive our Email UpdatesClick here to Rate and Review the podcast—----------------------------------------ROBERT'S NEWEST SINGLE:“SUNDAY SLIDE” is Robert's newest single. In this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I reconnect with my old Belmont University neighbor and longtime friend, Jeremy Casella. Jeremy and I first met on the third floor of Pembroke Hall, and after nearly 30 years, it was a joy to sit down and trace the threads of music, friendship, and life that still connect us today.Jeremy shares stories from his early days at Belmont, discovering artists like Béla Fleck and Brooks Williams, and crossing paths with classmates like Brad Paisley, while reflecting on how those formative years in Nashville shaped his career as a songwriter and performer. We talk about the folk scene of the early '90s, the influence of Phil Keaggy (who has since become a close friend and collaborator), and the ways great music can inspire new creativity rather than imitation. Our conversation also dives deep into the balance of being both a musician and a family man, and how perspective shifts as you approach 50. Jeremy opens up about what it means to leave a legacy through music, including his upcoming Christmas project, and how producing other artists has become an equally rewarding part of his creative journey.Along the way, we touch on coffee rituals, songwriting discipline, the craft of production, and the inspiration of producers like Daniel Lanois. This is a rich, heartfelt conversation with a friend who embodies both authenticity and artistry.Music from the Episode:Autumn in Kingston Springs (Jeremy Casella)Beauty Leads the Way (Jeremy Casella)Love That Will Not Let Me Go (Jeremy Casella featuring The Blind Boys of Alabama)On the Evening Train (Jeremy Casella)To learn more about Jeremy, visit his website. Jerry Douglas is never not entertaining. On stage, on record, or in conversation, Flux, as Bela Fleck famously dubbed him, is full of wit, joy and inventiveness. His talents have garnered him 16 Grammy Awards, 28 IBMA Awards, 3 Country Music Association Awards, 3 Americana Music Association Awards, an NEA National Heritage Fellowship, and an artist residency at the Country Music Hall Of Fame and Museum. I heard once that his style playing Dobro was so popular that practically every other player emulated it, to the point that he had to reinvent his own style to distinguish himself from the rest of the pack. This story could very well be apocryphal, but it points to the fact that his influence is everywhere in bluegrass and bluegrass-adjacent acoustic music. And Jerry Douglas has stories. Ask him about anyone in bluegrass, or even a ton of artists outside the genre, and chances are that he knows them and can spin a yarn or two about playing with them or being in their orbit. Get him going, and he may even tell you about his ancestor David Douglas, of Douglas fir fame, and the spectacular and mysterious way he met his end in Hawaii. Here, we bring Jerry Douglas back to Southern Songs and Stories for a second time, following his 2021 episode “It's Always Roots Music 12 O'Clock With Jerry Douglas”. Since then, Jerry has been inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Association's Hall of Fame; he has served as festival host and solo performer as well as in his tribute band The Earls Of Leicester for the Earl Scruggs Music Festival, with frequent guest appearances for a number of other artists and bands there; he also fell right back in with Alison Krauss & Union Station for their first album since 2011, Arcadia. Jerry Douglas will be the host once again at the Earl Scruggs Music Festival in late August 2025, where he will perform with the Earls of Leicester as well as Alison Krauss & Union Station, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and who knows how many artists as their on stage guest. Recently, he spoke with me on a video call while on tour with AKUS, where he gives us a preview of Scruggs Fest, plus he details a lot of what went into Arcadia. We also find out what he believes is the best key for playing bluegrass music, and learn how he approaches his instrument in Union Station differently than on his own.

Eclectic mix of musicians to perform at Howland Of the 14 saxophones, from tenor to contrabass, Brad Hubbard gravitated to the baritone. "It's my voice and just a different animal for me," he says. The instrument facilitates honking - the twisted mouthpiece resembles a gooseneck. Hubbard plays several woodwind instruments, but when the New York City Ballet orchestra selected a piece from West Side Story with a baritone sax part, or if Woodstock-based Americana mainstay Professor Louie & the Crowmatix wants that low-end presence, he's a go-to. Though he graduated from a classical music conservancy that eschewed jazz, Hubbard enjoys bending genres and playing unlikely styles. "When I first came to New York, I got hired by a country guitarist because I knew all the old songs, though I can't sing a lick," says the North Carolina native, whose voice still resonates with a faint twang. "I'm grateful for my education, but it's taken my entire professional career to recover from it in some ways." On Sunday (June 8), Hubbard will perform at the Howland Cultural Center in Beacon at Composers Concordance, an annual confluence of eclectic musicians. Nine composers, five of the players and conductor Gene Pritsker created works specifically for the concert. (They call themselves the CompCord Ensemble.) "This is about as 'winging it' as classical music gets," says Hubbard. The instrumentation (including members of the B3+ brass trio) consists of horn, trumpet, piano, clarinet, bass trombone and, of course, baritone sax. Roger Aplon, one of the three poet narrators, and pianist Debra Kaye live in Beacon. The concert is an offshoot of the New York City-based collaborative Composers Concordance, which presents a packed schedule of performances. Hubbard has participated in all six of its concerts at the Howland Center. Though classical music and the jazz-oriented sax make strange bedfellows, he points to famous crossover musicians who fused classical training with other forms, including cellist Yo-Yo Ma and bass player Edgar Meyer, who jumped from Beethoven to country. Bluegrass banjo player Bela Fleck and jazzman Wynton Marsalis, who recorded three trumpet concertos by Haydn, Hummel and Mozart in 1983, arrived at classical from other genres. Hubbard also recalls the Kronos Quartet's stirring string arrangement of "Purple Haze," by Jimi Hendrix, in 1986. Like jazz, "there's plenty of space for improvisation in Baroque music," a precursor to the classical period, along with "many compositions called 'theme' and 'variation,'" he says. "The continuo [underpinning bass or cello lines] are also open to alteration and interpretation." Hubbard got his start in the 1990s with the New Century Saxophone Quartet before branching out. In addition to teaching at the Beacon Music Factory, he honks with the Funk Junkies and Hot Wrk Ensemble, which plays original music along with Beatles and Dolly Parton covers. On Saturday (June 7), the Hot Wrk crew will perform at the Kingston Public Library with Beacon violinist Gwen Laster. Blame Google (or human nature) for the creative spelling. According to Hubbard, "people are weird - so weird that all kinds of crazy stuff comes up [when searching for 'hot work'], none of which has to do with music." The Howland Cultural Center is located at 477 Main St. in Beacon. Tickets for the show, which begins at 5 p.m., are $20 at dub.sh/CompCord2025 or $30 at the door. Tickets for seniors and students are $10.

Over the past two decades they have played with Yo Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble, Mexican singer Magos Herrera, Irish fiddler Martin Hayes, and banjo wiz Bela Fleck.  They've commissioned a bunch of new pieces, and now, to celebrate their 20th anniversary, they've released a new record called The Four Elements - a wide range of music from the past and the present which is representative of, or directly inspired by Earth, Air, Fire, Water. And in parallel, the record is also designed to raise the alarm and bring “attention to the powerful forces of climate change which represent the single greatest challenge of our time”, (Bandcamp). U2 released a part-live, part studio album in October 1988 called Rattle and Hum.  This album accompanied a filmed “Rockumentary” of the band which was filmed in Denver and Arizona.  Originally intended to be entitled  “U2 in the Americas,” the album and film instead take their name from lyrics in the song “Bullet the Blue Sky' from their album “The Joshua Tree.” Studio sessions for Rattle and Hum included time at Sun Studio in Memphis, and include collaborations with other musicians including Bob Dylan and B.B. King.  The intent of Rattle and Hum was to explore more American blues rock, and folk, and roots music of the 50's and 60's, and includes both original and cover songs.  Critics were divided on the album at the time of its release.  Some felt that U2 was not celebrating blues rock and artists as much as they were attempting to insert themselves into higher echelons of rock celebrity.  Over time the criticisms of egotism would fade, as U2 has indeed proven to be a major force in the Rock pantheon.  In retrospect, both Bono and The Edge have found Rattle and Hum to be a bit of a side excursion for the band, more of a “scrapbook” than a true direction.  The new direction of U2 would be set beginning with their next studio album, “Achtung Baby” in 1991.  Regardless, Rattle and Hum is a great album, well worth a listen.  The collaboration with other artists is worth special attention, as is its examination of the way that modern rock finds its roots in the delta blues.Friend of the show Greg Lyon sits in for Wayne, while Rob brings us this hybrid album for today's podcast.Angel of HarlemThe second single from the album is an original studio release which was written as an homage to Billie Holiday.  Songwriting took place during the tour for ”The Joshua Tree,” and the lyrics take inspiration form various landmarks around New York City.  The track reached number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 9 on the UK Singles chart.  When Love Comes to TownRecorded in Sun Studios, this U2 original song features collaboration with blues guitarist B.B. King. Live performances included B.B. King and his band during the “Lovetown Tour” in 1989.  U2 would discontinue playing the song in concert over time, but revived it in 2015 as a tribute to B.B. King after his death.  King plays lead on this song written by The Edge, who takes on rhythm guitar for this track. All Along the WatchtowerThis live cover is of a song written by Bob Dylan and made famous by Jimi Hendrix.  The lyrics are of a conversation between a joker and a thief, and several lines echo lines of scripture from the book of Isaiah in the Bible.  U2 performed this live cover in San Francisco at the “Save The Yuppie Free Concert.”  Some of the lyrics were altered, which irritated Dylan. Pride (In the Name of Love)A live version of the studio song from the 1984 album The Unforgettable Fire, this was recorded in Denver.  The popularity of this song can be heard in the audience call-and-response.  The lyrics were inspired by elements of the civil rights movement, particularly the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Iko Iko by The Belle Stars (from the motion picture “Rain Man”)Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman turned in stellar performances in this dramatic film exploring autism. STAFF PICKS:Kiss by Art of Noise featuring Tom JonesBruce leads off the staff picks with a cover of a Prince song performed by an unusual pairing of art rock group the Art of Noise with Vegas crooner Tom Jones.  This became the biggest hit for the Art of Noise to that point, reaching number 5 on the UK charts and number 31 on the Billboard Hot 100.  She Drives Me Crazy by Fine Young CannibalsLynch brings us the most successful single from the British pop trio, off their second and final album, “The Raw & the Cooked.” The band formed from two previous bands, one Ska, and one Punk.  The track was composed at Prince's Paisley Park Studios in Minneapolis.Once Bitten, Twice Shy by Great WhiteGreg features a rocker.  Great White covered a song originally written and performed by Ian Hunter in 1975.  This song went to number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Great White had a more blues-oriented sound than many of the hair metal bands of the late 80's.  Lead singer Jack Russell passed after a battle with Lewy body dementia in August 2024.What I Am by Edie Brickell & New BohemiansRob closes out the staff picks with the signature song off Edie Brickell & New Bohemians' debut album, "Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars."  The inspiration for the song was Brickell's frustration with the dogma exhibited in a world religions class in college.  Brickell would meet her husband and fellow musician, Paul Simon, when she performed this song on Saturday Night Live. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Sunset Road by Bela Fleck & the FlecktonesThis jazz fusion piece with an unusual banjo lead was on the group's debut album, and takes us out for this episode. The Indian-born tabla player and composer, teacher, and advocate Zakir Hussain, son of Ustad Alla Rahka, who passed away in late 2024, wasn't just a virtuoso improviser - he was one of the world's exceptional percussionists, working in many genres, and was the world's preeminent tabla master. He was a great communicator in many musical languages, including jazz, Afro-Cuban rhythms, Nigerian talking drums, or Indonesian gamelan; he was also a great listener and a bringer of joy (editor can't help herself.) One of the most exciting ways that Zakir Hussain shared tabla specifically, and percussion more broadly was by way of the Masters of Percussion Tour – which was exactly as stunning and marvelous as a music fan (especially a drum nerd) might ever imagine. Zakir turned the tabla into a global instrument by way of his incredible collaborations, playing with everyone from George Harrison to Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead, from John McLaughlin's Shakti and Yo Yo Ma's Silk Road Project; he's laid down beats for Scottish fiddlers Charlie McKerron (Capercaillie) and Patsy Reid (formerly of Breabach); played concertos with western orchestras, with and without banjo player Bela Fleck and bassist Edgar Meyer, and performed and recorded with scores of Indian classical musicians. Zakir Hussain enjoyed the different challenges that each new collaborator “will throw at him”. For this edition of the Soundcheck Podcast, Ustad Zakir Hussain joined Pandit Rahul Sharma, the son of illustrious santoor master Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, who established the pedigree of the santoor within Indian Classical Music. Pt. Rahul Sharma has since built on his father's style, “taking the santoor to new corners of the world”, (Darbar.org). Rahul Sharma has also collaborated widely across genres, having released some 60 albums, split between classical Indian music and more experimental recordings. Rahul Sharma and Zakir Hussain played in-studio in Oct of 2024, just about six weeks before Hussain passed away. - Caryn Havlik Set list: 1. Dhun: Misra Pahadi 2. Dhun Keharwa Sharma explains the roots of the santoor, and gives a quick demonstration of its 94 strings which require precise tuning:  Zakir Hussain also gave an intimidatingly fast explainer of some of the syllables of tabla, what the left and right hand might do, with unbelievable and impressive speed: See their performances:

Conversations with Musicians, with Leah Roseman

Kala Ramnath is a world-renowned Indian violinist who performs in both the Hindustani classical tradition, and in collaborations that incorporate many styles with Ray Manzarek of The Doors, Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer, Hilary Hahn, Kronos Quartet with Reena Esmail and veena player Jayanthi Kumaresh, and  leading orchestras such as my own National Arts Centre, to name but a few. You'll hear about her childhood, and how she became a disciple of the legendary vocalist Pandit Jasraj, leading her to revolutionize her approach to Hindustani violin technique. As a teacher she has put together an incredible resource with an extensive video library that she's created of Indian music, Indianclassicalmusic.com  When I recorded this interview with Kala, she had just the day before returned from the celebration of life for the legendary tabla master Zakir Hussain, who died this past December, and was one of the most important musicians in both Indian music and in bringing a global audience to Indian music. He had moved to San Francisco in the 1960s and was involved in too many projects to begin to list; in 2024 he was the first musician from India to receive 3 Grammys at one ceremony, including his collaboration with Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer. Zakir Hussain was an incredibly important mentor of Kala, and you'll hear in her words about what his guidance and collaborations meant to her. Kala talked to me about some of her many cross-genre collaborations, including her fantastic albums with tabla master Bikram Ghosh  and her inventive trio with George Brooks and Gwyneth Wentink and you'll hear some of that music as well (albums linked below).  Like all my episodes, you can watch this on my YouTube channel or listen to the podcast on all the podcast platforms, and I've also linked the transcript : YouTube and TranscriptKala Ramnath Website Indianclassicalmusic.com Raag Ahir Bhairav  Paperboats album Elements trio albumOther episodes I've linked directly to this one, which I think may interest you: Karnatic violinist Suhadra VijaykumarSitar and tabla player Mohamed Assani Bansuri player Milind DateSarod player Avi KishnaIt's a joy to bring these inspiring episodes to you every week, and I do all the many jobs of research, production and publicity.  Please buy me a coffee? King, Willie Nelson, Ray Charles, Leon Russell, Allen Toussaint, Neville Brothers, Bela Fleck and Ry Cooder, to name a few, all while building up an acclaimed catalog that blurs the boundaries between blues, soul, rock & roll, Americana, and much more. In conjunction with "Heart of the Eternal," Croce's upcoming yearlong "Heart of The Eternal Tour" will kick off nationwide on February 20 at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, through April 6 at the Opera House in Lexington, Kentucky (check A.J.'s website and local listings for additional performances to be announced in 2025). Tickets can be purchased for the "Heart of The Eternal Tour" at www.ajcrocemusic.com  "Heart of the Eternal" is the latest collection of Croce's songwriting and heart-on-sleeve emotion -- the follow up to his critically lauded cover album "By Request" -his first original body of work since 2017's "Just Like Medicine," which was hailed as "brilliant" by No Depression and a "fluid expression of sorrow and gratitude" by Pop Matters. Says Croce: "I've always felt that music is the heart of our humanity. It's the purest way to connect to one another. Every songwriter I've ever met has told me that they don't know where their greatest songs have come from. Maybe it's our dreams or subconscious that allow us to draw from that eternal well of creativity. I don't know the answer but I'm always looking for it. While stylistically diverse, this album is my search for the heart of the eternal." Recorded at the Sunset Sound in Los Angeles, California, Croce's 11th studio album features bassist David Barard (a Grammy-winner who performed with Dr. John for nearly four decades), drummer Gary Mallaber (whose credits include Van Morrison's Moondance and Tupelo Honey), and guitarist James Pennebaker (Delbert McClinton, Jimmie Dale Gilmore). The album was completed during Croce's downtime from his ongoing "Croce Plays Croce" tour-a widely celebrated run in which he performs classic songs from his late father Jim, along with his own material and a number of specially curated covers.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

ReString Appalachia www.americansongcatcher.com/ReStringAppalachia ReString Appalachia is an initiative by American Songcatcher to get instruments that were lost due to Helene back in the hands of musicians throughout Appalachia. This effort is supported by over 125 roots musicians, including Bela Fleck, Rhiannon Giddens, Old Crow Medicine Show, The Infamous Stringdusters and many more, as well as several non profits, instrument makers, venues, festivals, actors, visual artists and media outlets. - It's been nearly a month since Helene brought unfathomable devastation to Appalachia. I've honestly never been so consumed with grief after a natural disaster. I have countless memories of performing, camping and hiking... so many good times throughout Appalachia over the last 15 years. I got married in Swannanoa. I almost moved to both Brevard and Asheville. I also have dozens and dozens of dear, talented friends throughout East TN, WNC, SC, North GA, and FL. It's been hard to embrace that it'll never be the same, that so many are suffering. Words fell short in a time like this. Action speaks, and I had to do something. So, through the American Songcatcher network, I've been quietly building an initiative that will put instruments back in the hands of those who lost them due to the storm. The exact, or comparable instrument. This effort is called ReString Appalachia. Whether you're a professional, or picking for the love of it, the importance of continuing the living tradition of Appalachian music culture is paramount, and American Songcatcher aims to keep it that way. Over the next month, you're going to see 100's of musicians, non profits, venues, festivals, actors, artists and media outlets post about ReString Appalachia. If you, or someone you know lost an instrument due to Helene, if you have instruments to donate, or if you are seeking a tax-exempt donation to help us cover the costs, please visit the link in the show notes. American Songcatcher will be back very soon with a very special live episode on Western North Carolina music history. Thank you for listening. Tony is from Syracuse, and has spent most of his career in the New York area. His early bands included The Down City Ramblers, Country Cooking and Breakfast Special. He also started making really cool solo records in the early 70's that are pretty out-there in the context of what was going on in those days in bluegrass. Those albums definitely nod to traditional bluegrass, but they are also very progressive and experimental. He did alot of touring and recording with his various projects and collaborations over the years, while continuing to teach and compose (he taught a young upstart named Bela Fleck a thing or two in some lessons). After working to progress the banjo and its role in music through his entire career, Tony suddenly has dropped this amazing new project on us that is as traditional as it gets, and has allowed him to mine the depths of the greatness of Earl Scruggs. The new record is called Earl Jam, and was made after he was given hours and hours of tapes of Earl and John Hartford jamming. Unheard stuff that is like a portal into the brain of the greatest banjo innovator of all time. Tony transcribed a hours of that playing, and those transcriptions are what you hear, along with guests like Molly Tuttle and Billy Strings. So let's dive into all this history and hear about the new record - you can get all the latest info on Tony and his upcoming gigs at tonytrischka.com - Enjoy my conversation with Tony Trischka! This season is brought to you by our sponsors Larivée Guitars and Fishman AmplificationYou can join our Patreon here to get all episodes ad-free, as well as access to all early episodesThe show's website can be found at www.makersandshakerspodcast.com Get ad-free episodes and access to all early episodes by subscribing to Patreon. Open up your heart! Open up your heart! Open up your heart, let Kimbra pull you out!On this episode, Kirk goes for a swim in the extra-buoyant waters of Kimbra's 2011 pop stomper "Cameo Lover." It's an intricate musical narrative told through shifting time-feels, retro drum beats, leaping vocals, and sneaky key changes, and it's just the song to raise our spirits after a long, dark winter.Written by: Kimbra JohnsonAlbum: Vows (2011)Listen/Buy: Apple Music | Amazon | SpotifyALSO FEATURED/DISCUSSED:“Somebody That I Used to Know” by Gotye from Making Mirrors, 2011“Settle Down,” “Plain Gold Ring” and “Sally I Can See You” by Kimbra (Plain Gold Ring by George Stone) from Vows, 2011“In My Bones” by Jacob Collier from Djesse Vol. 3, 2020“Be My Baby” by Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich, and Phil Spector as performed by The Ronettes, 1963OUTRO SOLOIST: Dan NervoThis episode's outro soloist is the fantastic Dan Nervo. We have a special episode this week - we are sharing Sarah Jarosz's conversation on Basic Folk podcast! Sarah is a multi-Grammy winning mandolin player and songwriter who has collaborated with the likes of Chris Thile, the Live From Here house band, Bela Fleck, Daniel Tashian, Ruston Kelly, and Natalie Hemby. In this conversation, Sarah and hosts Cindy Howes and Lizzie No talk about her experience with confidence using the Dunning–Kruger effect, in which people with limited competence in a particular domain overestimate their abilities. AKA Fake it till you make, AKA Leap and the net will appear. She also talks about her parents' influence on her early musicality and how her mom is doing with her cancer remission. An overall theme of this conversation is that Sarah never lost sight of her goal: keeping it all about the music and don't let noise get in the way of your important work.More on Basic Folk:Basic Folk, honest conversations with folk musicians, features hosts Cindy Howes and the musician/known communist Lizzie No. The podcast approaches interviews with warmth, humor and insightful questions. Basic Folk fosters the folk community, but our definition of “folk” is extremely broad, so you'll hear interviews from Molly Tuttle, Ben Harper, The Lone Bellow and many more. You can listen to Basic Folk on The Bluegrass Situation Podcast Network, wherever you get podcasts or at BasicFolk.comGet more access and support this show by subscribing to The Other 22 Hours on Patreon, right here.Links:Sarah JaroszBasic FolkBasic Folk on IGLizzie No on IGSocial Media:The Other 22 Hours InstagramThe Other 22 Hours TikTokMichaela Anne InstagramAaron Shafer-Haiss InstagramAll music written, performed, and produced by Aaron Shafer-Haiss. Kris Myers was born on April 5, 1977. Receiving a drum kit at the age of 8, he took an early interest in jazz, rock and punk music. During high school Myers co-started his first musical outfit, a ska/punk band called the Skalawags. The group received a decent amount of success but denied an offer to tour Japan to instead pursue college degrees. Myers attended Elmhurst College from 1995 – 1999 where he was a music major and the drummer in the Elmhurst College Jazz Band. Under director Doug Beach, the Elmhurst College Jazz Band played gigs in the U.S. and Internationally at events such as the Umbria Jazz Festival, Jakarta Jazz Festival and the Montreaux Jazz Festival. In 2001 Myers enrolled in DePaul University where he earned his master's degree in jazz drumming and was a member of the Rob Parton Orchestra.  In addition to his involvement in school bands, Myers was playing in festivals with a variety of jazz artists such as Nicholas Payton, Diane Schuur, Randy Brecker, Dennis DiBlasio as well as local musicians Mark Colby and John McLean.  Myers also was a member of Chicago jazz fusion band Kick the Cat.  Myers began playing drums for progressive-rock band Umphrey's McGee in 2003 following the departure of original drummer Mike Mirro. With Myers at the helm, Umphrey's has released ten albums and maintains a rigorous touring schedule of over 100 live shows per year.  Umphrey's has performed at legendary festivals and venues such as Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Fuji Rock Festival, South by Southwest, Red Rocks, The Ryman Theatre, The Beacon Theatre and more. With Umphrey's, Myers has shared the stage with countless notable musicians such as Buddy Guy, Huey Lewis, Ivan Neville, Les Claypool, Stephen Perkins, Mike Keneally, Joshua Redman, Bela Fleck, Taj Mahal, Victor Wooten, Adrian Belew, Stanley Jordan, Gene Ween, Derek Trucks and Jason Bonham. In 2011 Myers was honored with the title of Best Jam Band Drummer by DRUM Magazine, beating jamband stalwarts such as Butch Trucks (The Allman Brothers) and Jon Fishman (Phish). In 2018, Myers was featured on the cover of Modern Drummer's July issue. Myers placed second in the Experimental Rock category of the publication's “Readers Poll Awards” behind St. Vincent drummer Matt Johnson. When he's not behind the drum kit, Myers enjoys playing golf, attending concerts, hiking and collecting art.    Some Things That Came Up:  -2:30 Kris's multi genre style  -3:00 Rabid fans  -4:45 The Umphrey's McGee audition turned into a 21 year gig and counting -6:30 Kris's previous band was Kick The Cat  -11:00 Maintaining a list of all the venues the band has played  -11:30 Red Rocks is fave venue as well as The Fox Theater in Oakland and The Ryman in Nashville -14:00 Vic Salazar !!! My guest on the podcast this week is Chris Eldridge, guitarist with Punch Brothers and Mighty Poplar.Chris is not only one of my favourite guitarists, he's also one of my favourite people I've had on as a guest, so I'm delighted to welcome him back to Bluegrass Jam Along to celebrate the podcast's 400th episode. In this special episode we're chatting about Bela Fleck's ground breaking record Drive. It's a record that's really important to Chris, and also played a key role in the early days of both The Infamous Stringdusters and Punch Brothers.Chris talks about first hearing the record, why it grabbed his attention so much and why it holds a key place in not only Bela's output, but also in the rich tradition of progressive, instrumental string band music. We also talk about the remarkable contributions made by the players Bela assembled for this record, including Sam Bush, Mark Schatz, Jerry Douglas, Stuart Duncan, Mark O'Connor and, of course, Tony Rice.It was a fascinating conversation to get to have. Drive is one of my favourite records and I know it's a favourite of so many bluegrass fans and players too. Thanks Chris and here's to the next 400 episodes!Happy picking!Matt Support the Show.===- Sign up to get updates on new episodes - Free fiddle tune chord sheets- Here's a list of all the Bluegrass Jam Along interviews- Follow Bluegrass Jam Along for regular updates: Instagram Facebook - Review us on Apple Podcasts

One of the many fun things about making this podcast is going from "this is cool!" (ironically) to "yo, this is pretty sick actually" (sincere), so it should be no surprise that breaking down the context around the creation of Revelation and the timeline of the Tribulation judgments was really fun to dig into. The start of this episode is a look into the actual book of Revelation and the history that led to its writing, along with necessary context to help ground this wild and weird book. Then, we enter the Final Terrible Week of The Lord and break down the Seal, Trumpet, and Bowl Judgments that have either already affected our heroes, or will be thrown at them soon. Things are about to get extremely unchill for the Tribulation Force and I cannot wait to talk about it when we get deeper into the series. Even if some of the judgments are repeats... (Really, God? Three earthquakes??)This episode would not have possible without the fine folks over at patreon.com/contenthole.
