Charles Knight on “Robert E. Lee” For More info: WWW.ChicagoCWRT.ORG Douglas S. Freeman's Pulitzer Prize-winning three-volume biography of Robert E. Lee is a masterful reconstruction of the man's life. So exhaustive was Freeman's research that he often boasted he could account for every hour of Lee's life from West Point until his death. Freeman's Lee is thorough, but it isn't THAT thorough. Often neglected in Freeman's Lee and other studies of the general or of his various battles and campaigns is what Lee was doing when he wasn't in the spotlight. Charles Knight's new From Arlington to Appomattox: Robert E. Lee's Civil War Day by Day, 1861-1865 recreates those four years of Lee's life--at least as much as is possible at 150+ years distance. It is often forgotten that in addition to his duties as a general, Lee was still a husband, father, and friend. He lost a daughter, sister, two grandchildren, daughter-in-law, and his home during the war. In2 this presentation Knight shares some of the results of years of research into Lee's actions during the war years; previously unknown sources, inconsistencies that confused Freeman and dozens of other historians over the years, memorable anecdotes of Lee's daily life, and other historical "nuggets" that came to light in his research. Charles Knight is native of Richmond, VA, where he developed a love of history at an early age. He has worked at museums and historic sites for more than 20 years in Virginia, Arizona, and North Carolina, and has given historical presentations to audiences across the country. He is the author of Valley Thunder: The Battle of New Market (Savas Beatie, 2010), From Arlington to Appomattox: Robert E. Lee's Civil War Day by Day (Savas Beatie, 2021), as well as numerous magazine and journal articles, and was a historical advisor on the 2014 film Field of Lost Shoes, about the Battle of New Market. Knight is currently working on a biography of Confederate general and railroad magnate William Mahone; a history of Gen. Douglas MacArthur's Honor Guard company; and editing the memoirs and papers of Gen. R.E. Lee's aide Charles Venable. Knight is the curator of military history at the NC Museum of History in Raleigh and resides in Holly Springs, NC, with his wife and children.

Searching for Ancient DNA: The Use and Abuse of Celebrity Elizabeth Jones, PhD, Project Coordinator at NC Museum of Natural Sciences, and Postdoctoral Researcher in Biological Sciences at NC State Website | Twitter @DrDinoDNA Ancient DNA research has a short but sensational history, especially as the birth of the field coincided with the Jurassic Park craze. Find out how celebrity helped shape the science for better or for worse. Abstract Ancient DNA research—the recovery of genetic material from long-dead organisms—is a discipline that developed from science fiction into a reality between the 1980s and today. Drawing on scientific, historical, and archival material, as well as original interviews with more than fifty researchers worldwide, Elizabeth Jones explores the field's formation and explains its relationship with the media by examining its close connection to de-extinction, the science and technology of resurrecting extinct species. In this talk, Jones reveals how the search for DNA from fossils flourished under the influence of intense press and public interest, particularly as this new line of research coincided with the book and movie Jurassic Park. She then takes on this reality, diving deeper into the nuance of celebrity to show how media interest simultaneously empowered and undermined the field, and how scientists responded to it both positively and negatively. By investigating the use and (perceived) abuse of celebrity, we arrive at an appreciation for the intricate interplay between science and media, and how the two influence one another. Related links: Ancient DNA: The Making of a Celebrity Science, by Elizabeth D Jones (2022) Speaker Bio Dr. Elizabeth Jones is the Project Coordinator in the Zanno Lab for the Cretaceous Creatures public science project at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences and a Postdoctoral Research Scholar at NCSU. She is a Historian of Science and author of the book “Ancient DNA: The Making of a Celebrity Science” (Yale University Press). Jones received her BA in History and Philosophy from NCSU, MA in History and Philosophy of Science from Florida State University, and PhD in Science and Technology Studies from University College London. Her research is interdisciplinary, focusing on the historical, philosophical, and sociological aspects of the scientific process to better understand how science happens and how it impacts society. Throughout her career, she has had first-hand experience working with paleontologists and geneticists in both the field and the lab across the US, UK, and Europe. Prior to her most recent job, Jones was a Project Coordinator and Postdoctoral Research Scholar in the Cooper Lab at NCSU for a NSF grant to create a Toolkit for Data Ethics in the Participatory Sciences in partnership with the Citizen Science Association. Dr. Caren Cooper is passionate about involving people in the scientific process as citizen scientist. Growing up, she wanted to study wildlife and the environment. Her interests led her to earn a Ph.D., to fieldwork in Australia, and to a position at Cornell University’s Lab of Ornithology. She is currently Associate Professor of Forestry and Environmental Resources at North Carolina State University as well as Assistant Head, Biodiversity Research Lab, NC Museum of Natural Sciences.  During our discussion, Caren shares how residents of Flint, MI acted to have their water tested and their voices heard, and how Cape Cod residents took action when they noticed higher than normal breast cancer rates. Caren's recently released book, Citizen Science: How Ordinary People are Changing the Face of Discovery, details the history, process, and importance of how all people can work in conjunction with scientists, to gain a deeper understanding of the world around us.  Caren says that “Citizen Science advances new knowledge that wouldn’t be possible without collaboration between scientists & the public.”   Through my Discover What’s Next Coaching program I use all of my personal and professional experience to help women find purpose and fulfillment. Learn more.  Key Takeaways: [3:25] Caren wanted to write a book about citizen science after discovering the research was undervalued and understated. [7:49] What is a Citizen Scientist? [10:46] The Flint Michigan Water Crisis is a great example of citizen science can help solve an environmental issue. [13:21] As far back as the 1700’s, people have been collecting scientific data, including Thomas Jefferson. [20:10] Participants do not need to know how to write for a scientific publication to contribute. [26:09] The Cape Cod, Breast Cancer, Silent Spring connection.
