Autor: Mikk PärnitsLiitusin TikTokiga koroonaperioodi alguses ning hakkasin tegema vandenõuteemalisi paroodiavideoid. Maamehest paranoiku karakteriga sain väikest varvast pidi ka Nublu laulu sisse. Kui see nali ära kulus, hakkasin tegema laive ning nüüdseks olen TikTokis juba aasta jagu passinud. Läbi on elatud kohutavaid, hüsteeriliselt naljakaid ja öökima ajavaid kohtumisi. Siin on minu vaatlused.

Producers Ryan and Katerina report on what makes a show or concert accessible to the deaf community and they look at, and try on, some technology from Music: Not Impossible that could help make attending concerts and experiencing music more accessible. Music Not Impossible created what they call “Haptic Suits,” specifically designed for the deaf and hard of hearing. The suits are used to translate music into vibrations that people can then feel throughout their entire body, which can provide a greater connection to music for deaf and hard of hearing communities, and break down barriers between hearing and deaf concert-goers. They spoke with a number of guests about this cutting-edge technology that's making the experience of music accessible for all. Guests: Jeff Rosen, who is a Grateful Dead fan, and a Deafhead (which is what people who are deaf and also Grateful Dead fans, call themselves). Jeff was also the Chairman of the National Council on Disability under the Obama Administration and is now the general legal counsel for a company called Convo Communications LLC. We spoke to Jeff about the history of accessibility at Grateful Dead shows and what it means to have an accessible concert or venue. Paddy Hanlon is a co-founder of Music: Not Impossible and a Vibro DJ. He gave our producers a demo of their Haptic Suits at Nublu 151 in the East Village, New York. Alberto Madero, an ASL sign language interpreter, and his mother Merry Cuascut (Alberto interpreted for his mother), about their experience trying on Music: Not Impossible's Haptic Suits at Lincoln Center's Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra this summer. Shelly Guy through an ASL interpreter about her experience trying on Music: Not Impossible's Haptic Suits at Lincoln Center's "An Evening of Access Magic " at their Silent Disco this summer. My guest today is Lex Sadler.Lex is a bassist, programmer, designer and musical director. Besides being a great electric bass player he’s also a very skilled synth bass player. Lex moved to NYC 13 years ago from Australia and has played with people like Peter Cincotti, Talib Kweli, Michael Bolton, etc. He also is a big part of the many of the great local music nights in NYC including Producer Mondays at NuBlu (featuring all kinds of all-star guests) and the Jelly. He has a great solo album called “Polytronic”, with geniuses like Cory Henry, Nat Townsley, Ari Hoenig, Alex Han and my drum brother Sydney Driver. There’s also Rhythm & Stealth (which also features Sydney Driver on drums) that’s an eclectic mix of electronica, hip hop, samples, live instrumentation and drum’n’bass beats. We talked back at the end of June and talk about all kinds of stuff ranging from vintage basses, video games, NYC in the late 00’s, etc. It was a great conversation and here’s how it went.

Our guest this week is Chris Forsyth, guitarist, bandleader, composer, and DIY lifer. His studio albums evoke the punk psychedelia of Television, balancing ‘70s rock grooves the loose, exploratory feel of the Dead. But as good as his studio LPs are, it might be live recordings that best showcase his sound. His latest is called First Flight. On it, he’s joined by guitarist Dave Harrington, drummer Ryan Jewell, and bassist Spencer Zahn on stage at Nublu in New York City on September 20th, 2019. Who knows how long it will be before we can safely cram into a room to take in some live jams, but in the meantime, the 40-some minutes of First Flight should help those missing the thrills of unexpected and immersive live music. Forsyth joined Transmissions to discuss his roots, time spent studying with Richard Lloyd of Television, and his motivations in opening a DIY space in Philadelphia, Jerry’s on Front. Does Transmissions make your listening life better? Help us continue doing it by pledging your support via our Patreon page. Doing so will get you access to our secret stash—including bonus audio, exclusive podcasts, printed ephemera, and vinyl records—and help us keep an independent publication going.
Drummer Jochen Rueckert has some things to get off his chest. Born and raised outside of Cologne, Germany, Rueckert started coming to New York as soon as he possibly could. By the time he was in his early 20s, he was already well into paying his dues. He can be heard on over 120 albums and worked or recorded with musicians and bands such as the Marc Copland Trio, the Kurt Rosenwinkel new quartet, the Mark Turner Band, the Melissa Aldana trio, the Sam Yahel trio, John Abercrombie, Pat Metheny (he tells that story here), Matt Penman, Kenny Werner, Bill McHenry, Seamus Blake, Guillermo Klein and Los Guachos as well as Madeleine Peyroux. He also leads his own band, programs and releases electronic music under the moniker Wolff Parkinson White, and has written a series of ebooks chronicling every hotel room he's stayed at with a self-timer photograph and short stories about some of the more annoying aspects of life as a touring musician, called Read The Rueckert. In this extensive and wide ranging conversation Rueckert meditates on his early years in Germany, why playing with great bass players is like eating great pasta, refusing to share hotel rooms, why he is a reluctant teacher, making electronic music, the rare innate heart condition he suffers from, how to groove with organ players, organizing tours, why one should never play with pop musicians, what it was like to play one gig with Pat Metheny, what he’s thinking about when he performs, drummer Bill Stewart’s time feel and volume level, Artificial Intelligence, the years he spent at Nublu in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, and much, much more. www.third-story.com www.leosidran.com www.jochenrueckert.net/

Guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Dave Harrington is one hell of a nice guy and a monster on his instrument. A lifelong New Yorker, he spent his teenage years sneaking into shows at Tonic and the Knitting Factory, absorbing the music of Sex Mob, Bill Frisell and Marc Ribot, while studying bass with Brad Jones. For many years he was one half of the duo Darkside and more recently leads his own groups the Dave Harrington Group and the Merry Pranksters. He can frequently be founded performing in a variety of settings at Nublu in NYC as well as DJing parties around the world. He's a solid cat.
