What the Riff?!?
1973 - May: the Beatles "1962-1966" and "1967-1970"

What the Riff?!?

Echoes of the trajectory of the Beatles still reverberate through music today, and they loomed quite large over the rock scene in the early 70's.  In 1972 a bootleg 4-album set of Beatles songs was produced called "Alpha Omega" which sold well when marketed on TV.  In response - in addition to suing - Apple and EMI/Capitol Records produced an authorized collection in two double albums.  The first was called 1962-1966, also known as the Red Album, while the second was called 1967-1970, also known as the Blue Album.    The Blue Album was a compilation of Lennon-McCartney original songs, avoiding many of the successful cover songs the early group had recorded.  Unfortunately it also did not contain any George Harrison compositions from this time period.  The Red Album did not contain any covers, as the Beatles were immensely popular on their own by this time.  However, it did contain songs from George Harrison and Ringo Starr along with the numerous Lennon-McCartney originals. The album covers are notable, as they are similar photos of the group at different points in life.  The cover to the Red Album used an image of the group looking down over the stairwell inside EMI's London headquarters.  This was a photograph taken for the group's 1963 debut LP.  The Beatles had recreated that shot in 1969 for their planned "Get Back" album, but did not use the image when the album was released in 1970 as "Let It Be."The compilation project was a success, and convinced other groups to release similar retrospective compilations.  It is also a terrific way to see the progression of the band in seven short years of their activity.  WSB Radio's Eric Von Haessler joins us to highlight these two influential albums in this week's podcast. Love Me DoThe very first single released by the Beatles was this track and the lead-off track from the Red album.  John Lennon and Paul McCartney provide duet vocals on this song, and Lennon is the harmonica player.  While it is credited as a Lennon-McCartney song, John Lennon provides the bridge, and has stated that it was a McCartney song before they began working together.Tomorrow Never KnowsThe concluding track from "Revolver" is the concluding track for the Red album, and shows how far the Beatles have taken their music in four short years.  They are utilizing techniques like looped drums, reverse guitar, and processed vocals that were new to the music scene at the time.Strawberry Fields ForeverThis track opens the blue album.  The inspiration for this song was a park in which Lennon played as a child, and evokes a childlike innocence.  The music style was a departure from the Beatles' previous style, and is considered the introduction of the psychedelic genre.Let It BeA profound piece after the psychedelic period, "Let It Be" is often considered the swan song for the Beatles, because it was the final single released before McCartney announced his intention to leave the band.  The  inspiration of the song was a dream Paul McCartney had about his mother. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Knocking on Heaven's Door by Bob Dylan (from the motion picture “Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid”)This western movie had a revisionist history and starred a number of celebrities, including James Coburn, Kris Kristofferson, and Bob Dylan himself.  STAFF PICKS:Kodachrome by Paul SimonBruce starts out the staff picks with the lead single from Simon's third studio album "There Goes Rymin' Simon." While it did well in the US, it received little airplay in the UK due to strict rules the BBC had in place regarding product endorsements.  The idea of the song is that we fit our memories to our worldviews like we frame shots in a camera.Money by Pink FloydRob brings us the lead single from the monster album "Dark Side of the Moon."  A rare song in 7/4 time with a 4/4 guitar bridge, the lyrics describe the desire and material trappings that cause people to chase after riches. Peaceful Easy Feeling by the EaglesLynch features an iconic song from the Eagles.  It was written long before this time by Jack Tempchen, a prolific singer-songwriter, but appeared on the Eagles debut album. Glen Frey is on lead vocals, and the harmonies are provided by Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner. Right Place, Wrong TIme by Dr. John Eric finishes the staff picks with a funky tune from New Orleans-influenced Dr. John.  It was the first single from "In the Right Place," Dr. John's sixth studio album, and was also his biggest commercial hit, reaching number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. COMEDY TRACK:The Cover of "Rolling Stone" by Dr. Hook & the Medicine ShowWayne presents the comedy single this week, as Dr. Hook seeks validation by appearing on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. GDP Script/ Top Stories for November 6th Publish Date:  November 6th   From the BG AD Group Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Wednesday, November 6th and Happy birthday to Glen Frey ***11.06.24 - BIRTHDAY – GLEN FREY*** I'm Keith Ippolito and here are your top stories presented by KIA Mall of Georgia. 1.      Gwinnett voters reject transit tax – again 2.      Trump carries Georgia four years after losing Peach State 3.      Gwinnett's Overstory Rooftop Bar to Host Holiday Cocktail Class Plus, Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on food apps. All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: 07.14.22 KIA MOG STORY 1:  Gwinnett voters reject transit tax – again Gwinnett County voters rejected a proposal to expand transit for the third time in five-and-a-half years, with a 53.7% to 46.3% margin. This marks the fifth rejection of a transit sales tax, including past proposals to join MARTA and expand the county's transit system. The latest proposal aimed to fund a major expansion of Ride Gwinnett through a 1% sales tax, including new routes and microtransit. Some voters skipped the transit tax question, citing confusion and insufficient information. The defeat means transit expansion won't be funded by sales tax but could still proceed through other funding sources. STORY 2:  Trump carries Georgia four years after losing Peach State Former President Donald Trump secured Georgia's 16 electoral votes, narrowly defeating Vice President Kamala Harris with 50.8% to her 48.5%, according to projections. With only three rural counties left to report, Trump led by nearly 120,000 votes, significantly outperforming his 2020 loss to Joe Biden by 11,799 votes. This victory in Georgia, along with a win in North Carolina, shifted focus to the "Blue Wall" states for Democrats' hopes of retaining the White House. Trump and Harris both campaigned extensively in Georgia, with Trump holding rallies in rural areas to bolster support.   STORY 3: Gwinnett's Overstory Rooftop Bar To Host Holiday Cocktail Class Overstory Rooftop Bar is hosting a Holiday Cocktail Class on Sunday from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., where guests can enhance their mixology skills by learning to craft two signature holiday cocktails: the Winter Chill and the Fall Spritz (NA). Led by Food and Beverage Director Ashley Castillo, the class will focus on using seasonal ingredients and refining cocktail techniques, perfect for holiday gatherings. The event takes place at the Westin Atlanta Gwinnett in Duluth, and attendees must be 21 or older. Tickets are available online.   We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We'll be right back Break 2: Tom Wages   STORY 4:   AROUND TOWN: New alleys in Lawrenceville may just bowl you over This edition highlights Lawrenceville's alley revitalization project, a visit by Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz to Gwinnett, and a meeting between Gwinnett's Chairwoman and Vice President Kamala Harris. Lawrenceville is transforming alleys like Shoehorn and Honest Alley into vibrant spaces with landscaping and lighting, funded partly by a grant. Gov. Walz energized Gwinnett Democrats for Kamala Harris' campaign, likening her to a quarterback. Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson greeted Harris in Atlanta, expressing support for her presidential bid. Additionally, School Board Member Adrienne Simmons will host "Sip With Simmons" sessions for community engagement. STORY 5:   Bernie Marcus, Co-Founder of The Home Depot, Dies at 95 Bernie Marcus, co-founder of The Home Depot, passed away at 95 in Boca Raton, Florida. Known for his philanthropy, Marcus co-founded the Atlanta-based home improvement giant in 1978 with Arthur Blank. After his career, he focused on charitable work, supporting causes like medical research and Jewish initiatives. The Home Depot, headquartered in Cobb County, mourned his loss, praising his business acumen. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and other leaders highlighted Marcus's impact on business and philanthropy. Marcus's foundation has awarded over $2.7 billion in grants, supporting various causes, including the Georgia Aquarium and Autism Speaks.   Break 3:    And now here is Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on food apps ***INGLES 2 'ASK LEAH' FOOD APPS*** We'll have final thoughts after this.   Break 4: Ingles Markets (Quick Meal Foods) 6 Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. There is a corner off Route 66, in Winslow, Arizona which has been memorialized with a statue of the late musician Glen Frey, in front of a Trompe-L'oeil image of a red, flat-bed Ford truck, containing a girl (my Lord) giving him the once over.  How many songs can you name that have been so celebrated?  Take it Easy, written by neighbors Jackson Browne and Glen Frey, was the cut that launched the juggernaut that was The Eagles - America's answer to The Beatles, in the shadow of the latter's dissolution. The joyous, three part harmonies signaled the commercial ascendency of Laurel Canyon Country Rock - and provided a hopeful reset following the emotional bankruptcy of the late 60s. When I took my boys on a road trip to see the Grand Canyon, we stayed overnight in Williams, Arizona, also on route 66. I knew that Williams was not Winslow, but close, and that put a spring in my accelerator as I made the daybreak drive into the park.   There is a great “Be here now” mantra in the line: “We may lose, or we may win, but we will never be here again - So, open up, I'm climbing in… Take it easy!” Viewed through that lens, every moment can be an opportunity.

David Jackson Live on Game Changers with Vicki Abelson What a delight music legend David Jackson is. No surprise. I was warned by his legions of loyal fans, most of whom are his brilliantly talented contemporaries. This was fabulous fun, topped perhaps by pre-fed stories with lots of misinformation which paved the way for the truths, which proved to make it all even more fun. So what if David wasn't actually at Columbia Studios when George Harrison hid the pot from the cops, he told great story! Who cares if David was with Cher in DC, not the Chateau Marmont when she got a call from Jimmy (President Carter), not Henry Kissinger, or when he was offered his own show after being a regular on The Andy Williams Show he didn't turn it down, it just… well… he tells it... and then some… and then some more. Great stories, all. We hear about Hoyt Axton and how they wrote Ringo's No No Song, and Three Dog Night's Joy To The World, and what happened to David in both, there's the Chambers Brothers, Bo Diddley, Jackson Browne, John Denver, Sonny, and Sonny and Cher, Glen Frey, Jimmy Buffett, a GREAT story about Roger Miller and Glen Campbell, The Bohemian Grove, what that gentleman's club is really all about, and his upcoming trip to Marrakesh to play and… play. What a life. Well lived, still living to the max. This man is damn delight. Top to bottom, start to finish. I can't wait for his return to the States and his Friday nights at The Write Off Room with The Deductions. Till then I'll be hitting his Bandcamp https://davidpjackson1.bandcamp.com/album/first-waltz?fbclid=IwAR1FNNSEtyXUFWpxRjACYgs2844fFTyteIwhZUcxmpW0YxaBvfMngJfS_nk. Sometime around 2016, I got the sense that we were entering into a new era of rock history: a period when the musicians we loved and admired began to die... Listen, there had been many deaths before then, but they seemed reasonably few and far between...but 2016 seems to have been the year—for me, anyone—when I realized that many of our most beloved musicians were getting older and starting to die off... That one year alone we lost David Bowie, Glen Frey of The Eagles, Prince, Leonard Cohen, and George Michael....we lost both Keith Emerson and Greg Lake of the prog band Emerson, Lake, and Palmer...Paul Kantner of Jefferson Starship...Maurice white of Earth, Wind, and Fire...Beatles producer George Martin...and that's only a partial list... In 2017, it was Gord Downie, Tom Petty, Gregg Allman, Chris Cornell, ac/dc's Malcolm Young, Walter Becker of Steely Dan, and Chuck Berry, among others.... The following year, we lost Dolores O'Riordan of The Cranberries, Mark E. Smith of the fall, Avicii, Aretha Franklin, and Pete Shelley of The Buzzcocks. Then in 2019, Keith Flint of The Prodigy, Mark Hollis of Talk Talk,  Ranking Roger of The English Beat and General Public, Ric Ocasek of The Cars, drumming legend Ginger Baker...I could go on, but you get the idea... The one thing that binds all humans on this planet together is that some day, we're all gonna shuffle off into the great beyond... No one is getting any younger...and over the next decade, we're going to lose some of the personalities who have always been with there for us over the last 30, 40, 50, or even 60 years... With that grim reality in mind, I think the time has come for an annual look back for those whom we've lost in the last 12 months as a way to recognize their contributions to the world of music...this is 2022 in memoriam... The pressure on the Eagles to create an album to follow up their 1976 masterpiece "Hotel California" was intense, and it took 18 months and five different studios to produce The Long Run.  This was their sixth studio album, and their last album before thier 14-year hiatus.  It would mark the introduction of Timothy B. Schmit to the band, who took over bass and high vocal duties from the departing founder, Randy Meisner. The Long Run was originally intended to be a double album, but the band just didn't have enough songs in their creative arsenal for that.  In fact, the band was completely burned out after a long tour prior to entering the studio.  Don Henley, Glen Frey, and Don Felder were joined by Joe Walsh (who was added to the group on the "Hotel California" album) and Timothy B. Schmit.  Frey and Henley would contribute most of the songs, but Schmit and Walsh would contribute songs they had originated, and frequent collaborator J.D. Souther would add to the tracks.  Bob Segar would contribute as well. The album would be a hit, going 7x platinum, and would sport multiple number 1 singles, including the Grammy award winning "Heartache Tonight."  Nevertheless, they would receive disappointing critical reviews.  Perhaps this is not surprising given the comparisons to "Hotel California."  Friend of the show John Lynch joins us in Wayne's absence for this last-of-the millennium album from the Eagles. The Long RunThe title track is a Memphis blues-inspired tune.  The lyrics are a response to critics who considered the Eagles to be washed up, and unable to compete with the disco and punk sounds prevalent in the late 70's.  Henley and Frey answer, "who is gonna make it?  We'll find out in the long run."I Can't Tell You WhyThis is a song composed primarily by Timothy B. Schmit prior to joining the band, and was loosely based on his own experiences.  The rock ballad would be their third single released from the album.  Uncommonly for Eagles songs, Glen Frey plays lead on this song, and Don Felder is on the organ. In the CityJoe Walsh originally recorded this song for the soundtrack to the film "The Warriors," and it was re-recorded by the Eagles for this album. Though not released as a single, it got significant airplay on AOR stations at the time.  It has become a staple for band tours. The Sad CaféWhile not released as a single, this track would make it onto the Eagles Greatest Hits, volume II.  It was inspired by The Troubadour nightclub in Hollywood where the Eagles had previously played.  The song relays the tale of so many musicians who came through that nightclub, most of whom did not make it big.  David Sandborn provides the saxophone work on this song. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television series “The Facts of Life”"The Facts of Life" started its run in this month, and was originally a spinoff from the series "Diff'rent Strokes." STAFF PICKS:Hot Summer Night by NightBruce's staff pick is from a short-lived band out of Los Angeles, and is a cover of a song originally performed by Walter Egan in 1978.  The lead vocalist for this song is Stevie Vann, who emigrated from Zambia with her then-husband Robert "Mutt" Lange.  The group also had a male lead in Chris Thompson, who would be recognizable as the lead vocalist for Manfred Mann's version of "Blinded By the Light."Rock Lobster  by The B-52'sPut on your nose guard!  Put on your life guard!  Rob brings us the B-52's signature song, and the one that truly launched their career.  It came off their second studio album, "Wild Planet."  Fred Schneider said the song was inspired by a club called "2001" in Atlanta, which showed slides of puppies, babies, and lobsters on a grill. All of My Love by Led ZeppelinJohn Lynch's staff pick was released in August as a single, and is a softer rock ballad from the late stages of the band.  The song was written in honor of Plant's son Karac, who died while Plant was on tour with the band in 1977.  John Paul Jones plays keyboards on this piece.I Can't Stand It No More by Peter FramptonBrian wraps up the staff picks with the first single from Frampton's album "Where I Should Be."  Peter Frampton had just starred in the remake of the movie "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band," which was panned by critics and failed commercially.  He also had a bad auto accident in the Bahamas requiring months of therapy.  The song made it to number 14 on the pop charts.     INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Parisian Thoroughfare by SupersaxYou can't go wrong with a sax!  Jazz group Supersax closes out our podcast this week.

From Memphis To Muscle Shoals & More. Una semana después, el día 19, llegará Bob's Back Pages: A Night Of Bob Dylan's Songs. J.D. Long Road Out Of Eden. Escuchar audio

Shawn Kyle is an American singer, songwriter, artist and multimedia producer. Born inTampa, Florida on a side of town known to police and lawyers as "Suitcase City" for itsvagrancy, 80's drug epidemic, and crime; Kyle's own true stories often read like fiction.Kyle's first exposure to arts and culture came while working on construction sites andfrequenting the old family run businesses in Ybor City and inner city Tampa with hisfather as a pre-teen. It was the city's then potent mix of old world and new in the 80'sand 90's that introduced him to artists that led to a job as a furnace glass blowereventually assisting Dale Chihuly contemporaries, as well as a stint employed by listedpop-artist and money forger J.S.G. Boggs, all while Kyle clandestinely performed as ayoung stage actor fill-in for pay at Colleges he wasn't even attending. What would become all encompassing to his life for the next two decades however, would be kicked off by coming across an ad in a magazine looking for an electricguitarist. Calling the ad, and winning the audition, he stated his age as a baby faced 22.In reality Kyle had been playing an instrument for just two years and was only 17.Active work as a touring artist in clubs and college circuit found him alongside a varietyof bands and musicians who would become some of the more influential artists ofAlternative Rock, Americana, and College Radio. Over time as different bands and stylescame and went, Kyle worked into being represented by several of the largest talentagencies in the world, finding himself a runner up for an Independent Grammy Awardhe had no idea he was submitted for, in between colorful moments like cutting demoswith Joey Molland (Badfinger, George Harrison), wrestling Edwin McCain (and losing),trading jabs with Stan Lynch (Tom Petty, Glen Frey) or having a blackout night withpre-sobriety Jason Isbell (there may be an Isbell song about Ybor City and that evening).Eschewing an inherent promise of traditional arts had led Kyle into what would becomean even harder road: two decades of constant bootstrapping work in the hurly-burly ofthe rise, fall and recent rebirth of the music industry coinciding with the evolution of thedigital age. Through the disrupting Napster era into the music industry's current rebirthas a platform for never-ending directly delivered content; music and the businessaround it evolved, with the industry in hindsight shaping how the majority of allbusinesses and industries now socially function in media and tech from the corporateworld and the government, to record stores and yes, musicians. After their 10,000+ hours, many musicians that grew within the DIY era found a varietyof skillsets, from video production to auto mechanic work, app development tomarketing and branding, public relations to knowing which guitar will disintegrate tosplinters when smashed on a festival stage. All done by one person, on a momentsnotice, learning by experience, on a deadline, because the work had to be done.Shawn Kyle currently resides in Tampa, Florida, and is owner of Bay Multimedia LLCwhich has provided multimedia, marketing and branding for some of Tampa's belovedindependent businesses, a founder of the Music Festival App (on the iTunes Store), andpartner in Be Original Media LLC, providing A/V solutions for the non-profits industry.

.What did I say last week about making John Cleese prime Minister?....would you believe he was on the morning news the next day saying he was leaving the country because he was sick of the corruption in the government and the press...they asked him if he was going to America and he burst out laughing saying that was worse than here....so there you are.......speaking of the media there have been complaints about the BBCs handling of horrific events such as the Manchester bombing.... and the way stupid reporters ask traumatised members of the public stupid questions like "how does it feel to have nearly been killed?"...etc...SO the BBC are bringing out a training manual to teach the reporters how to handle those involved....so that's O.K. then....but it does beg the question WHAT ARE THEY DOING THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE ON NATIONAL TV when they are totally incompetent?? 2.Social media seems to be the answer to all those who love to moan about everything yet do nothing....my answer when I have a problem with an item is to cease buying it or anything made by its manufacturer....for example I used a lot of different makes of equipment in my recording studio....the only stuff that gave me problems was Sony....since then I have never bought any item made by them....and when buying hifi items I let the salesman know that I do not wish to be shown anything by Sony.....also I wouldn't have a VW car given to me because I had one from new and it was rubbish....I wouldn't entertain a Vauxhall either for the same reason...that's MY answer...at least I am making a point small as it may be....and if everyone did this maybe manufacturers would pull their socks up....I'd like to add my Tesco Microwave to the list....it has just ceased working after 18 months. 3.David Beckham has hit the headlines....he was caught doing 60mph in a 40 limit....and his "loophole" solicitor got him off because the summons was sent out late....creating headlines like "Bend the law like Beckham"....and he has announced "he was relieved"....I'm so happy for him.....why he is regarded as a celebrity is beyond me...he's as thick as two short planks and simply wanders around with a stupid grin on his face.....I remember him being sent off in the world cup which cost us the game...not to mention his penalty which hit the corner flag....this tattooed oaf proves you can fool most of the people all of the time...........however this will do him no good whatsoever as the gutter press are now on his case....he should have pleaded guilty ... but he is too stupid to realise that. 4.On the entertainment scene....I believe The Eagles are going on tour again...they must be running out of money...I have been a fan for many years but I now find them a bit samey.....I liked the line up with Don Henley...Glen Frey...joe Walsh...Tim Scmitt and Don Felder....however when they kicked Felder out I thought his replacement was good but NOT right.....with the death of Glen Frey they have brought in Vince Gill and Frey's son (?)...so to me it's not The Eagles....they are doing a stadium tour which is fine if you like to pay a fortune to watch a row of midgets half a mile away.....better waiting for the DVD.......Oh yes....and Kanye West has changed his name to YE according to the news....I can't think of anything less interesting......not forgetting the new Doctor Who is a woman....and guess who is in the cast....Mr."Never off the screen" Bradley Walsh......I do like Bradley but are there no other actors out there?....he must have a brilliant manager...............I always prefer dramas with reasonably unknown faces....makes it more realistic.. 5.I have just heard that Liverpool comedian Tom Pepper has sadly passed away....he was a nice guy and used to appear with Pauline Daniels where he would take the mickey out of women and Pauline would put him straight (as you can imagine) ... I wrote a song for him which he recorded and used in his act....called "On Behalf Of The Lads"......which would now be regarded as none PC....but only by those with no sense of humour....it is the song for this week in memory of my mate.

REFLECTION QUOTES “It is difficult to free fools from the chains they revere.” ~Voltaire (1694-1778), aka François-Marie Arouet, French Enlightenment philosopher “Man is condemned to be free.” ~Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980), French philosopher and novelist “You can destroy freedom as much by abusing it as you can be taking it away.” ~Attributed to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh “God who gave us life gave us liberty. Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are the gift of God? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just, that his justice cannot sleep forever.” ~Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), inscribed in the Jefferson Memorial “Men are largely interdependent, and no man's activity is so completely private as never to obstruct the lives of others in any way. ‘Freedom for the pike is death for the minnows'; the liberty of some must depend on the restraint of others.” ~Isaiah Berlin (1909-1997) in Two Concepts of Liberty (1958 “And freedom, oh freedom, well that's just some people talkin'. Your prison is walking through this world all alone.” ~“Desperado” written by Glen Frey and Don Henley of The Eagles “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.” ~St. Paul in 2 Corinthians 3:17-18 SERMON PASSAGE Selected Passages from the Gospel of Mark (ESV) Mark 1 14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” Mark 8 31 And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 And he said this plainly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.” 34 And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. 36 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? 37 For what can a man give in return for his soul?” Mark 10 42 And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

What, exactly, denotes success in the music business? Is it making a handsome living without a day job? Is it playing for thousands of adoring fans? Is it selling millions of records? Or is it something more elusive, like writing great songs regardless who hears them or staying true to your artistic vision whether or not you sell lots of tickets? Jonathan Clark might have something to say about all these questions. Clark is perhaps best known as a successful session vocalist and bass player – his current marquee gig is playing in genre-busing country star Dwight Yoakam's crack band, but he has also backed up heavy hitters like Glen Frey, Don Henley and Joe Walsh from The Eagles, Michael McDonald, Peter Cetera, Laura Brannigan and Christopher Cross. But Clark is not simply the guy who provides harmony vocals and the low end for household names. His most recent release, I'm Just Sayin', should convince any nonbelievers that Clark is a top-notch artist in his own right. The twelve songs on the record are catchy and expertly produced, and they are delivered with his confident and accessible voice. Jonathan Clark is, simply put, a success by any measure.
