Given that it’s Thanksgiving weekend, I thought it was high time to have a show consisiting of nothing but tracks from albums that I’ve been playing around the house. Yeah, not exactly a novel idea, but it’s a great soundtrack for a weekend of record shopping, partying, or even putting up the dreaded holiday decorations. (Ok, probably best for the partying category.) Sure, it’s nothing but old material but it’s not the type of old material you normally hear. There’s classic garage rock from 60s legends such as The Sonics and The Who. There’s edgy singer/songwriter tunes from Jesse Malin and Graham Parker. There’s a whole set devoted to highlights from the ill-fated Sex Pistols film, The Great Rock and Roll Swindle. Naturally, there’s all kinds of material from the much-lauded “Hudson Basement Excavation Project”. For more info, including setlists, head to http://scotthudson.blogspot.com
The special folder on my hard drive was full, so it was once again time to have a show devoted to cover songs. This time around there are fantastic remakes of songs by the likes of the Stones, Pink Floyd, Small Face, Pretty Things, The Cure, Joy Division, and tons of others. Most importantly, there’s a generous helping of Jesse Malin covers from the new triple album benefit album, Silver Patron Saints. Two years ago, Malin suffered a rare spinal stroke, and his friends gathered together for this wonderful set of Malin’s own tunes. It’s a rare tribute album that stands proudly with the original versions, and this is one of them. For more info, including setlists, head to http://scotthudson.blogspot.com
On December 1 and 2, musician Jesse Malin will be honored with two tribute shows at the Beacon Theatre, featuring Lucinda Williams, The Hold Steady, and more artists. In May 2023, Malin suffered a spinal stroke which has left him paralyzed below the waist. Malin joins us to preview the show, and discuss his recovery as well as a recent benefit album, Silver Patron Saints, featuring Williams, Bruce Springsteen, Billie Joe Armstrong, and other contributing artists.
Jesse Malin is my guest on this episode of That's How I Remember It. A complete legend of NYC rock and roll, Jesse suffered a spinal stroke in 2023 and has been rehabilitating since. His songs are covered in a new tribute album with a star-studded lineup. Many of these artists will be playing the Beacon Theater in December when Malin and his band take the stage for the first time since the stroke. We talked about all of that as well as playing with the Misfits in 1981, seeing the Ramones for the first time, and so much more. Was a thrill to spend this time with Jesse. Jesse Malin is about as New York as you can get. How New York is he? Well, he's in a Martin Scorsese movie for starters. Jesse got his start in the hardcore band Heart Attack before pivoting to the rough and ready D-Generation in the ‘90s. After that band's demise, Jesse made an even harder pivot when he turned to his acoustic guitar and released the Ryan Adams-produced THE FINE ART OF SELF DESTRUCTION — in effect, reinventing himself as a rock and roll troubadour and NYC ambassador. And then about a year and a half ago, Jesse suffered a rare spinal stroke that threatened his ability to ever walk again. But in true LIFER fashion —and with the help of his community and his friends— Malin has soldiered on and is gearing up for a pair of benefit shows at the Beacon Theater on December 1st and 2nd that will mark his return to the stage. It's a pleasure to have Jesse on the show this week to put some shit into perspective for us and talk about Johnny Thunders, CBGB's, Bruce Springsteen, Ian Hunter, “Bringing Out The Dead”, Green Day, Rickie Lee Jones and a WHAT'S THE BEST?!? with The Clash. The future is unwritten, everybody!
On episode #65 of “Sound Up!,” Mark and Alan welcome Jesse Malin to discuss the all-star benefit album “Silver Patron Saints,” his new single, and his ongoing recovery from a spinal stroke. Alan describes his night judging Taylor Swift karaoke, and Pod Squad listeners review Cyndi Lauper and Conan Gray. In music news, we recall the passing of Liam Payne and Phil Lesh and talk about the reaction to Alex Van Halen's memoir and the Concert for Carolina benefit. This week's new music picks feature tracks from Sade Adu, Lone Justice, Soccer Mommy, Beth Hart, and the Black Keys with Alice Cooper. We want to make you part of the conversation. In this episode, the ultra-talented, multi artistic Franz Nicolay joins us to talk about his latest book, Band People. Franz dives into how the book might feel therapeutic for seasoned supporting band members, though maybe not the best handbook for new recruits. We also break down the brand-new cover of Jesse Malin's “Death Star.” Join us as we explore the meaning behind the track and, as we like to say, “That's no moon…” Check out Franz's new book at :https://franznicolay.com/ How was the Atlanta show? On today's show, guitarist and songwriter Lorne Behrman explains how he weathered through the pandemic in New York City, has a conversation about marriage and fatherhood, and talks about sobriety, A.I. & Chat GPT, his new album and more. Lorne also performs a couple of songs: BARBARA and YOU DON'T KNOW ME LIKE THAT. GUEST OVERVIEW: Lorne Behrman is a Punk rock n' roll guitarist and singer-songwriter songwriter who has previously played in The Dimestore Haloes, L.E.S. Stitches, The Dead Tricks, and The Sweet Things. Lorne's most recent album - his second as a solo artist - BLUE LOVE (Spaghetty Town Records) is an 11-song collection featuring "a series of New York City vignettes haunted by shadows but guided by light." The stories on BLUE LOVE are literate and lacerating, recalling the street poetics of Lou Reed, Jim Carroll, Jesse Malin, Patti Smith, Hubert Selby Jr., and Tom Waits. The songs feature stark and fluid guitar playing in the spirit of Television, The Stooges' James Williamson, Johnny Thunders, and Robert Quine with Lou Reed. Previously, Lorne issued a critically-acclaimed EP and debut album that have garnered accolades and features in Classic Rock Magazine, Vive Le Rock Magazine, Metronome, Glide Magazine, New Noise, Goldmine, and taste-making punk mag Razorcake. Lorne has played shows with Richard Lloyd (Television), Jeremy & the Harlequins, Lenny Kaye (Patti Smith Group), Jonny Polonsky, Adam Masterson, Lulu Lewis, and Diane Gentile, among many others. https://www.lornebehrmanmusic.com/

On today's show, Diane Gentile tells the story of how she got into the music industry and went from managing other artists to becoming a talented singer-songwriter working on her own music. Diane offers an inside look into her writing process, shares some details of her experience recovering from being injured in a freak car accident in 2018, and performs a couple of live songs: WALK WITH ME and JOE. GUEST OVERVIEW: Diane Gentile is a singer-songwriter, musician, and music industry professional based in New York City. Melody Maker Magazine says, "Gentile's work is one of the rare examples of songwriting capable of meaning all things to all listeners." She recently released her 3rd album, THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL, with her band Diane & The Gentle Men. The album is a scrapbook of vignettes featuring endearing but poetically flawed protagonists sketched with Diane's literate flair and doused in classic NYC rock n' roll swagger. It features a duet with Alejandro Escovedo, an appearance by James Maddock, and a song produced by Jesse Malin. Previously, she released THE WHITE SEA, with the classic song "Motorcycle", produced by The Dream Syndicates' Steve Wynn, which became a hit on Little Steven's Underground Garage. Diane has also worked as a record company executive, music venue manager, artist manager, and journalist. https://www.dianegentile.com/
"Ozark Symphony" Born in Memphis into a musical family, Kelly Hunt grew up listening to classical, folk and Delta Blues. She sang in the choir and played the piano, but it was the five-string banjo that stole her heart. Hunt was both a traditionalist and a modernist, blending old-time picking with her own brand of improvisation. After graduating from college she explored farming, the visual arts and French breadmaking and then she settled in Kansas City and got to work on the songs that would make up her debut album Even The Sparrow. Even The Sparrow is a stunner of a debut, garnering a nomination for the International Folk Music Award. Her sophomore effort Ozark Symphony ups the ante' and makes the case that Hunt might very well be one of the most spellbinding forces in folk music. Summoning philosophy, poetry and the legacies and stories of the American South, Ozark Symphony brings to mind Joni Mitchell, Walt Whitman and Rhiannan Giddens. From the soaring glory of Top Of The World to the gentle percussion of On The Bayou, Ozark Symphony is a stunner. The songs are played with precision and finesse and the lilting melodies and achingly beautiful hooks are emotionally exact. Now, I've interviewed Jesse Malin while he was running errands, Xavier Boyle from Tahiti 80 talked to me while he was on a date, and Kelly Hunt? Well, she did this whole interview on a swing. Sid Simons is a musician. I first heard of Sid when he was in his band Girlskin where my friend Ruby played violin in so of course I would support and go check it out for myself. Girlskin was such a New York band that I loved listening to. Reminded me of all those Patti Smith books I used to read before moving to NYC but without shooting up of course. This isn't another Sid and Nancy story so piss off! Berlin is still my favorite venue in the East Village where I would find all my favorite local bands and of course anything Jesse Malin touches that supports the underground New York scene. As time went on things changed but Sid always remained a musician. Now going solo I had to see for myself. Sid Simons crushing it with opening up for Franz Ferdinand, looks good in a blazer, this is all reminding me of the MTV days. Let's dive in and chat about rock star hairstyles, Elliot Smith, NYC scenes, and going solo. Please welcome Sid Simons to Wear Many Hats. instagram.com/sidsimonsofficial instagram.com/wearmanyhatswmh instagram.com/rashadrastam rashadrastam.com wearmanyhats.com dahsar.com

iTunes Spotify Youtube Patreon Bob Gruen is one of the most well-known and respected photographers in rock and roll. From John Lennon to Johnny Rotten; Muddy Waters to the Rolling Stones; Elvis to Madonna; Bob Dylan to Bob Marley; Tina Turner to Debbie Harry, he has captured the music scene for over forty years in photographs that have gained worldwide recognition. Shortly after John Lennon moved to New York in 1971, Bob became John and Yoko's personal photographer and friend, making photos of their working life as well as private moments. In 1974 he created the iconic images of John Lennon wearing a New York City t-shirt and standing in front of the Statue of Liberty making the peace sign – two of the most popular of Lennon's images. As chief photographer for Rock Scene Magazine in the '70s, Bob specialized in candid, behind the scenes photo features. He toured extensively with the emerging punk and new wave bands including the New York Dolls, Sex Pistols, Clash, Ramones, Patti Smith Group and Blondie. Bob has also worked with major rock acts such as Led Zeppelin, The Who, David Bowie, Tina Turner, Elton John, Aerosmith, Kiss and Alice Cooper. In 1989, he documented the epic trip to Russia of the “Moscow Music Peace Festival” featuring Ozzy Osbourne, Mötley Crüe and Bon Jovi. For many years Bob was the official photographer for the New Music Seminar held in New York City, covering dozens of aspiring new bands in the course of a summer week. This seminal body of work reflects a profound commitment and long-standing personal friendship with the artists. His wealth of personal experiences and uncanny memory provide the most illuminating and comprehensive histories of rock youth culture. “All Dolled Up,” a DVD documentary made by Bob Gruen and Nadya Beck of their early '70s video footage of the New York Dolls, was released in 2005 with a follow-up DVD, “Lookin' Fine On Television” released in 2011. In the spring of 2007 FAAP University in Sao Paulo, Brazil, presented an exhibition of Bob Gruen's work. Titled ROCKERS, the exhibition attracted 40,000 visitors. The ROCKERS exhibition was also shown from April to July 2008 at Morrison Hotel Gallery on the Bowery in New York City. Bob's “Sid Vicious with Hot Dog” photo was acquired by The National Portrait Gallery, London, in 1999 for their permanent collection. The Experience Music Project, Seattle, acquired his “Clash Live in Boston”, “Tina Turner Multiple Image”, and “Bloody Sid Vicious” photos for their permanent collection in March 2012. In 2011 award winning director Don Letts made a feature length film titled ‘Rock & Roll Exposed – the Photography of Bob Gruen' including interviews with Iggy Pop, Debbie Harry, Alice Cooper, Yoko Ono, Billie Joe Armstrong and many more. Bob was presented in June 2004 with MOJO Magazine's prestigious Honours List Award for Classic Image in London and in November 2010 he was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame. For his many charitable contributions, Bob received the first ever John Lennon Real Love Award in December 2014 at the 32nd Annual John Lennon Tribute Concert. More recently he has also photographed Green Day's tour of Europe, Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band, Iggy Pop, Ozzy Osbourne, AC/DC, Jesse Malin, Ryan Adams, Courtney Love, The Strypes and other new popular acts.
