The answer to whether you should have a vacuum sealer on you boat is complicated. But hopefully I can give you a few ideas of what to think about before you decide for yourself. Summary Over the years, many readers asked me about vacuum sealers for boats. I had one aboard two different cruising boats. And although I liked mine, I still consider them a luxury item. Here's what you should know if you're thinking of buying one. Vacuum sealers preserve food better than zipper bags. They remove more air, their bags are tougher, and they won't open unexpectedly if you seal the bags properly. If you're a weekend or part-time cruiser and use it at home, it's great for preparing meals or snacks in advance. Full-time cruisers are more likely to use them at a big provisioning stop. And, if you catch more fish than you can eat right away, a vacuum sealer is a great way to ensure the fillets last and retain a good texture. But not all vacuum sealers work consistently. And that can drive you nuts on a boat. Especially if you're used to having one and can't replace it when it fails. A quality home-rated vacuum sealer costs around $150 and bags are upwards of 15 cents a piece. Small commercial units work better but are double the price. Finally, they do take some power (although for a short time). I used mine the most often in a marina, hooked up to shore power. If you're planning on using it away from the dock, make sure your inverter is large enough for the unit you buy. My final comment is that vacuum sealers are great on a boat if you get a good one. But they're still a luxury. And if money is tight, they might not rise to the top of your list. This week's EYE ON NPI will have you tripping all over yourself in a rush to place a Digi-Key order for the Tripp Lite Antimicrobial Surge Protectors (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/t/tripp-lite/antimicrobial-surge-protectors-for-home-and-office) a range of power extenders that have tons of ports for your home or office workstation. We're used to basic '6 outlet' power extenders, so when we peeped the many funky shapes, we picked up a few for the home office. Here's our favorites of the series: The TLP648UCBAM (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/tripp-lite/TLP648UCBAM/16161493) has a U-shaped body that is designed to clip onto a desk. Note it doesn't clamp down so you'll want to put it to the side where it can't get bumped, and a thick desk - like 1" or more - will probably work best. This one has 6 outlets, three on each side, two USB A 5V 2.4A and one USB C 5V 3.0A plug for portable devices. This is great for a work bench where you may have a few computers, scope, power plugs, and then also you want to charge your phone or power a single board linux computer or dev kit. The TLP68UBAM (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/tripp-lite/TLP68UBAM/16161654) is kinda like those yachts that have another, smaller, boat that can launch off of it (https://www.travelpulse.com/News/Entertainment/This-Yacht-Has-a-Garage-for-Your-Boat). There's the main power outlet plate with 6 outlets, then a detachable clamping USB power module that extends out and clamps onto a desk for plugging in up to 4 USB Type A. This one is nice if you're OK with having the power adapter on the floor or otherwise hidden behind your workspace There's also some super funky shapes, like the cubic TLP368CUBEUAM (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/tripp-lite/TLP368CUBEUAM/16161497) which is evocative of a Borg Spaceship (https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Borg_cube) Or the spherical TLP38UAM (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/tripp-lite/TLP38UAM/16161623) with 3 outlets and 4 USB ports. While we didn't pick up a TLP410UCUFOAM (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/tripp-lite/TLP410UCUFOAM/16161616) we do note how useful it would be for a conference table so that folks don't end up crouching below the table then bonking their heads. But our number one fav, which we're going to use on the desk we broadcast EYE ON NPI from, is the TLP608DMUAM (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/tripp-lite/TLP608DMUAM/15298401) - a cute twist on the familiar 6-outlet favorite. First it is extra long so there's the 4 compact-outlets and then two chonky outlets for big power adapters. There's also two USB A ports with 5V 2.4A out max. Unlike the first adapter we showed off, this one has two thumbscrew clamps that can attach in any direction to any thickness desk. We're going to use this on our Ask-an-Engineer desk to power the lights, overhead cameras and demo boards that power over USB. A power outlet is kinda like a pair of shoes, belt or toothbrush: you want to get really good quality ones because you use them all day every day. The Tripp Lite series from Eaton (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/t/tripp-lite/antimicrobial-surge-protectors-for-home-and-office) are high quality, surge protected, and are a huge improvement from what you'd normally pick up for $20 from the hardware store. And Digi-Key has all of them in stock for immediate shipment! Order today and you can neaten up your desk wiring by tomorrow afternoon.

Today we sat down with Dr. Nate Klemp, author and co-founder of Mindful Magazine. Nate and his wife Kaley co-wrote The 80/80 Marriage, a book that we found to be full of practical insights about how to avoid resentment and replace it with radical generosity between you and your spouse. Nate also explains how to visualize the true priorities in your marriage, practices for modeling a healthy marriage for your kids, and five habits you and your family can implement to create more time for what really matters to you. We are excited to put the Klemp's practices into play in our own marriages and we hope you find this conversation as valuable as we did. As always, thanks for listening! When I was a toddler and would hum the tune, "Row, Row, Row, Your Boat," my parents couldn't tell what song it was. I had no sense of pitch. My grandfather could have been a concert pianist and had amazing pitch...such a dramatic fall to his granddaughter! I grew up believing I couldn't sing and still have trouble singing in front of people. What instrument did I want to play when elementary instrument sign ups came along? The violin. You know, an instrument that you need to be able to tell when you're out of tune in order to play! Generally speaking, when you hit the correct piano key, you get the correct note. Things are a little more nebulous on a stringed instrument. You need to be able to tell when your fingers have found the right place. Luckily, six or seven years of playing and private lessons had a big impact and my sense of pitch has been trained. It's much better than when I was a toddler. Welcome to the 2017 quote series. This is one of a series of abbreviated episodes happening before Labor Day where we're taking a look at little bits of wisdom in the form of quotes. Today's quote is from Dr. Maya Angelou and she said, "A bird doesn't sing because it has an answer. It sings because it has a song" You have a song. You have a song that is particularly yours. It is shaped by who you have been made to be. But, as my actual voice was shaped by training my ear, yours has been shaped by circumstances as well. The world has plenty of people who are more than willing to spout answers. Many of us have a nature that wants to solve problems. Solving problems makes us feel like we're doing something. But, generally people just want our song. Or, to share their song with us. I think I'm about to take Dr. Angelou's quote in a direction that it wasn't meant to go. But, I don't think she'd argue. Hurting people are all around us. You don't need an answer to help them. Simply acknowledge their hurt and listen. Your attitude of caring, your listening, your willingness to hear them is your song. And that song penetrates hearts so much faster, so much deeper than answers. You don't need to have the answer. Instead what if you sing? And what if you really listen to the songs of those around you?
