The Power of Suddenly: Living Life Beyond the Cross This Sunday at Myrtle House Community Church, Martin O'Brien took us deeper into Luke 24 with a message that stirred our faith and reignited our expectancy. He called it “The Power of Suddenly”—a look at how, after the cross, God still breaks into our lives in powerful, unexpected moments. Luke 24 captures four "suddenly" moments, and each one shows us what it means to live life beyond the cross—not just remembering the resurrection, but walking in its power today. 1. Suddenly, Heaven Breaks In (Luke 24:4) “Suddenly, two men appeared to them, clothed in dazzling robes.” As the women stood by the empty tomb, confused and unsure, suddenly angels appeared. Heaven broke into their ordinary, grief-filled morning with a message: Jesus is alive! In your moments of confusion or sorrow, expect heaven to break in. God still speaks. Heaven still moves. The resurrection isn't just history—it's hope, and it's here. 2. Suddenly, Jesus Walks With Us (Luke 24:15) “Jesus himself suddenly came and began walking with them.” As Cleopas and (most likely) his wife Mary walked to Emmaus, hearts heavy with disappointment, Jesus came alongside them—unrecognised at first, but present nonetheless. Have you ever been in that place—walking away from hope, feeling alone, not realising Jesus was with you the whole time? In your disappointment, Jesus walks with you. Even when you don't see Him, He is there. He listens. He speaks. He draws near. 3. Suddenly, Their Eyes Were Opened (Luke 24:31) “Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized him.” As Jesus broke bread, the couple finally recognised Him. One moment changed everything. In a single, Spirit-filled moment, Jesus revealed Himself—and their eyes were opened. That's the power of suddenly. You may not see the full picture today. But don't give up. In one encounter, in one worship moment, in one whispered prayer—Jesus can open your eyes and transform your heart. 4. Suddenly, Jesus Stands Among Us (Luke 24:36) “Suddenly, Jesus was standing there among them. ‘Peace be with you,' he said.” To fearful, anxious disciples hiding behind locked doors, Jesus appeared and brought peace. You may be afraid, unsure, overwhelmed—but suddenly, Jesus comes into the middle of your chaos and speaks peace. When He comes, fear doesn't have the final word—He does. Living in the Power of Suddenly Life beyond the cross is not passive. It is expectant. It is alive. It is full of suddenlys—moments when heaven breaks in, when Jesus draws near, when eyes are opened, and peace is restored. So what do we do? Walk in faith, not just by sight. Invite Jesus into your journey—even when it doesn't make sense. Open Scripture, open your eyes, open your heart. Be ready for the moments that change everything. “Life beyond the cross is full of suddenlys, full of revelation, full of His presence, and full of His peace.” – Martin O'Brien May we be a people who live with hearts wide open to the sudden, transformative presence of Jesus. Let's live expectantly. Let's live aware. Let's live beyond the cross, in the power of suddenly.

Mark 6:49-50 (KJV) 49 But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out: 50 For they all saw him, and were troubled. Luke 24:28-29 (KJV) 28 And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further. 29 But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. Episode 172: Ways to Engage Jesus in Everyday LifeHow do we engage Jesus in the process of everyday life? 1. To engage Him in our day to day activities, we must invite Him in and ask for His help.2. We should engage Jesus in our daily decisions. Invite Jesus in and ask for His wisdom and His help as you make simple decisions and difficult decisions.3. We are to engage Him in all areas - including our finances, filing our taxes, etc. - and let Him guide us.4.. As you set goals, make plans, or take your next steps - engage Jesus into the process of setting these goals, making these plans, and taking these steps. Allow time to pray - maybe even 30 days - praying and listening.5. Engaging is talking, listening, and reading God's word. Allow some quiet time and wait to hear from Him. Practice engaging the presence of Jesus.6. Engage Jesus in the hard season. Seek Him - not for the answer - but because He IS The Answer. Engage Him because this is the time that you can grow and see your faith strengthened. He wastes nothing and He redeems everything.7. Engage Him and ask Him to help you lead others to Him.Scripture Reference: Hebrews 1:1-3 We hope this is an encouragement to you.CONNECT WITH US AT:▶︎Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/EngageforMore▶︎Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/engageformore/Engage for More is a Top 100 Christian Podcast on the Feedspot List. We look at Jesus's first miracle at the wedding in Cana and uncover key principles to receiving favor: - Invite Jesus into your life. Just like Jesus was invited to the wedding, you must welcome Him into your life and circumstances. - Seek no glory but God's. Favor is not about personal recognition but about serving God's purpose. - Believe that God cares and be persistent. Trust that God is good, and keep your faith in His ability to help you. - Trust God's way. Whether through a miracle or a different path, God's way is always the best. Through powerful examples in Scripture—like the royal official's desperate plea for his son's healing and Peter's trust in Jesus during a challenging fishing trip—we see how God's favor flows when we invite Him in, trust His plan, and honor Him with all the glory. If you need favor in your life, this sermon will encourage you to trust God fully and seek His presence in your challenges.
Have you experienced rejection? Listen to this passage from the book of Ephesians in the Bible… Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure. The loving embrace of our perfect Father can change your life forever. It's never too late to start again. No matter what you've done, you can be made new and clean through the powerful, loving sacrifice of Jesus. He died on the cross to wash away every sin, every wrong thing that you've ever done. Invite Jesus to be Lord of your life right now, and receive God's gift of love, acceptance, and belonging. Always remember there is hope with God. I'm Andrew Palau. What does it look like to invite Jesus into our recovery process? In this Part 2 episode, Rodney Holmstrom, Global Field Director of Celebrate Recovery, continues the conversation around some practical steps we can take to invite Jesus into our recovery process and the fruit we can expect from that very important life decision.
In Celebrate Recovery we understand that Jesus has to be the center of our recovery. But what does it look like practically to invite Jesus into our recovery process, and what is the fruit of that choice - whether we're just starting out or already on our recovery journey? In this episode, Rodney Holmstrom, Global Field Director of Celebrate Recovery, begins to unpack this important topic.
If you saw a maniac become calm and sane, wouldn't you want to follow the One who had healed him? But the crowds who witnessed that very miracle chose to run Jesus out of town. When people turn their backs on Jesus and say, “Get out,” He leaves. But wherever we invite Jesus, He will come. Let's invite Jesus into our lives today.
Have you ever wondered if God speaks more loudly through our feasts and fasts, than He does through our mundane, ordinary circumstances? In this episode in our “Come to the Table” series on the Jewish and Christian feasts, Stephanie reflects on the significance of ordinary time, the ordinary moments of life. They are the backdrop to our feast days. They are the bulk of our time. The present, nestled between special feasts, serves as a space where believers are called to live in anticipation of Jesus' return and seek God's presence and delight in all moments. The question is, how did Jesus experience His own mundane and ordinary days? What does He wish to impart to us through them? So, Stephanie invites us to consider how the body of Christ functions during ordinary time, focusing on the importance of living in unity. This period of ordinary time is an opportunity for spiritual growth and for experiencing the lived reality of Jesus in everyday moments, celebrating the cyclical nature of the liturgical calendar. That word, liturgy. It can be ambiguous. Off-putting to some, attractive to others. Liturgy is simply the chosen flow of a service, or a day, or a life. It is how a particular local body of believers chooses to approach God, especially on Sundays but not only. It varies from church to church, with much to learn from the manifold practices of our brothers and sisters around the world. Stephanie's extensive personal experience with various church traditions, including Anglican, charismatic, reformed, Pentecostal, and non-denominational, highlights the diverse ways in which different traditions approach worship and liturgical practices. Understanding the concept of liturgy as the way a particular tradition conducts its services, including prayers, readings, and rituals, is an invitation into the richness and diversity within the body of Christ. Ordinary time is characterized by its lack of special feasts, representing the ordered life of the church and a period of watchfulness for the second coming of Jesus. Divided into two seasons, ordinary time serves as a call to unity within the body of Christ, inviting believers to keep Jesus at the center of mundane routines. Within ordinary time, we have weekly min-feasts called Sabbaths. So, how did Jesus experience them? How do Sabbaths fit at the table of God's Presence? Sabbath is associated with rest, refreshment, freedom, and joy, serving as a day of rest and a reminder of humanity's co-partnership with God. Stephanie discusses Jesus' claim of authority over the Sabbath, highlighting how He emphasized its wholesome nature to be a source of blessing. The Sabbath is a time of rest and delight, providing a sacred space to experience God's presence and embrace His joy. Today, we invite you to embrace the beauty of ordinary days, seek unity in the body of Christ, and live in hopeful expectation while finding rest and delight in the Sabbath. We invite you to cultivate a lifelong liturgy of delight in Christ, breathing new life into everyday moments as we journey towards the eagerly anticipated return of Jesus. Join us! OPTIONAL RESOURCE | Stephanie mentions the creation of a liturgy booklet designed to cultivate a lifelong liturgy of delight in Christ. This booklet consists of short liturgies for everyday moments, aiming to inspire you in building and nurturing a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. The liturgical year is presented as a means to grow in intimacy with Christ, providing an avenue to know Him more intimately in everyday life. Go to gospelspice.com or ask us about it! Read OnlineMany of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother [Lazarus, who had died]. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him; but Mary sat at home. Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.” John 11:19–22Today's memorial is relatively new within our Church. In the year 2021, Pope Francis replaced the Memorial of Saint Martha with this memorial in honor of all three siblings: Martha, Mary and Lazarus. In commenting on the reason for this new memorial, the Congregation for Divine Worship stated: “Martha generously offered him hospitality, Mary listened attentively to his words, and Lazarus promptly emerged from the tomb at the command of the One who humiliated death.” Furthermore, these three siblings gave an evangelical witness to us all. They model for us how to be Christians within our imperfections. They did this by welcoming Jesus into their home, by listening to Him attentively, and by believing that He is the Resurrection and the Life. These three siblings each had their own unique personality and loved Jesus in their own way. Though not much is said about Lazarus' personal interactions with Jesus, we do have some helpful insights into both Martha and Mary. In one Gospel story, Martha complained to Jesus that her sister left her to do all the cooking. Jesus gently corrected her. Mary, on the other hand, gave a witness of deep prayer and love of Jesus by sitting at His feet listening to Him. However, in the story of the raising of Lazarus from the dead, there is a reversal of roles. Martha is the one who runs out to meet Jesus and expresses her deep faith in Him. Mary, on the other hand, heard that Jesus was coming and appeared to stay at home because she was upset.Perhaps the most helpful way to ponder these siblings is to acknowledge two things. First, they are now saints in Heaven enjoying eternal beatitude and glory. Second, on earth they were people of faith and love, but they were also very clearly imperfect. Therefore, the witness they give to us should be twofold. We hope to share in the glory in which they now share, and we trust this will happen if we also befriend our Lord and welcome Him into our homes, imperfect though we may be. Reflect, today, upon this holy but imperfect family. The imperfections and manifest weaknesses of these three siblings should encourage us to press on in our practice of the faith when things are not perfect in our lives either. There are many reasons why we might get discouraged or feel like doubting or giving up at times.Perhaps things are not perfect within the Church—or at the particular church you attend. Perhaps you are struggling with loving someone in your family. Perhaps you are struggling with an emotional issue. Perhaps there is some sin you seem to be incapable of overcoming. Perhaps you struggle with a physical ailment and wonder why God permitted it to happen. If you are able to relate to any of these, or any other forms of imperfection, then take inspiration from this family of Martha, Mary and Lazarus. Invite Jesus into the home of your heart, your family home and everywhere you go. He will come, gently correct you when needed, and give you the gift of new life, raising you up from your sins and weaknesses. Lord, You befriended this ordinary family of Martha, Mary and Lazarus. You visited their home, received their hospitality, gently corrected them when needed and eventually raised them to the new life of eternal glory. May I also welcome You into the home of my soul, within my family and into every aspect of my life. Please come to me and raise me to the newness of the life of grace. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2024 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Matthew Dowling, preaching minister at the Plymouth Church of Christ, preached a message titled "Receive the Light!" from John 12:44-46 and various scriptures. The April sermon series is "Light It Up!" Join us as we explore the profound contrast between light and darkness as illustrated in the Bible, with a particular focus on John 12:44-46. Our journey through this sermon sheds light on the universal human experience of seeking solace in the shadows while yearning for the brilliance of truth. We share a poignant story from the now-defunct Experience Project, capturing the essence of how some individuals find comfort in obscurity, yet how the biblical narrative offers a different perspective—inviting us into the radiance of life with Christ. Listen in as we discuss the unique access to God that Jesus Christ provides, drawing parallels to the intimate connection between a locked car and its key. This conversation goes beyond surface-level understanding, diving into the significance of Jesus as the singular pathway to God the Father, dismissing the idea of multiple routes to the divine. We delve into the transformative knowledge of God that comes through a relationship with Jesus, highlighting how this union deepens our self-understanding and personal growth. The personal nature of this divine knowledge is emphasized, moving us from mere information to a life-altering relationship as depicted in the New Testament. In the final part of the sermon, we confront the challenge of carrying the light of Christ into our personal spheres of influence. By sharing the allegory of a nobleman and his gift of lamps to a village, we underscore the individual responsibility to illuminate our communities and homes. The call to action is clear: to actively spread the light of salvation and to make a profound impact on the world. We invite you to reflect on the places and people in your life that could benefit from the warmth and guidance of Christ's light, as we conclude with a prayer for the week ahead, seeking direction on how to brighten the darker corners of our society. Here is a 5-day devotional based on the sermon: Day 1: Stepping Into the Light Reading: John 12:44-46 Devotional: As we step into the presence of Jesus, we are stepping into the true light that has the power to transform our lives. Reflect on how Jesus being the light of the world changes your perspective on life and how you can live out this truth. As you ponder the stark contrast between light and darkness, consider areas in your life that may be shrouded in darkness. Invite Jesus to illuminate those areas and bring about a spiritual awakening in your heart. Question for Reflection: How does recognizing Jesus as the light of the world encourage you to live differently today? Prayer: Lord Jesus, I acknowledge You as the light that dispels all darkness. Illuminate my path and guide me into a deeper understanding of Your presence in my life. Amen. Day 2: Embracing Purpose with Christ's Illuminating Presence Reading: John 14:6 Devotional: Today, meditate on the truth that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. His illuminating presence brings clarity to our purpose. In a world that often presents many paths and directions, remind yourself of the singular way to truth and life through Jesus Christ. As you embrace this truth, consider how it impacts your daily choices and interactions. Question for Reflection: In what ways does Jesus' declaration of being the only way to the Father challenge or comfort you? Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for providing the one true way to You through Your Son, Jesus. Help me to walk in His light and find purpose in Your divine direction. Amen. Day 3: Journey to Spiritual Clarity Through Jesus' Teachings Reading: John 3:19-21 Devotional: As you journey towards spiritual clarity, let the teachings of Jesus in John chapter 3 help you to understand the importance of coming into the light. Reflect on your own attitudes towards sin and grace. Ask yourself if there are any areas where you might be resisting the light of Jesus' truth. Pray for the courage to step into the light and to live transparently before God. Question for Reflection: What might be keeping you from fully embracing the light of Jesus' teachings in your life? Prayer: Dear God, shine Your light into my life so that I may see clearly and live in accordance with Your truth. Reveal any areas of darkness in my heart and lead me into the fullness of Your light. Amen. Day 4: From Shadows to Radiance in the Embrace of Faith Reading: 2 Corinthians 4:6 Devotional: Contemplate the transformative journey from shadows to radiance. As you embrace faith in Jesus, allow the knowledge of God's glory to transform you from the inside out. Consider how the light of Christ can change not just your own life, but also how you interact with others. Think about how you can be a source of light in the places you go and to the people you meet. Question for Reflection: How does the light of the knowledge of God's glory reflect in your everyday life? Prayer: Father, let Your light shine through me so that I may reflect Your glory in all that I do. Transform me into a radiant beacon of Your love and grace. Amen. Day 5: Unlocking Sacred Realms with the Key of Christ Reading: Matthew 10:40 Devotional: On this final day, focus on the key of Christ that unlocks the sacred realms of divine access. Ponder the unity between Jesus and the Father and how this shapes your understanding of spiritual access. Consider how you can better receive and welcome Jesus into your life, thereby welcoming God the Father as well. Reflect on the hospitality of your own heart towards God and His teachings. Question for Reflection: How can you more fully embrace and welcome Jesus into your life, knowing that in doing so, you are also receiving the Father? Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are the key to a relationship with the Father. Help me to open my heart to You more fully, and in doing so, to experience the fullness of the Father's presence. Amen.
Who do you think Jesus is? Some people think He was just a great teacher or a prophet. But Jesus shocked the religious people of His day when He made this bold statement, “Whoever obeys my teaching will never die.” They wondered- how could Jesus say such a thing when even the father of the faith, Abraham, had died? Did Jesus think he was better than Abraham? Jesus answered them, “I tell you the truth, before Abraham was even born, I Am!” When Jesus says, “I am,” He's claiming to be God. The one who was not created, but was The Creator who existed before time, and definitely before Abraham came along. Jesus is God in human form—truth with skin on. And He came to the earth as a sacrifice for many so that people like you and me could share in the eternal life that He offers. You can receive that gift of new life. Invite Jesus to be Lord of your life, today. radio.hopewithgod.com
In today's gospel (John 2:13-22) we read St. John's account of what is known as the "Cleansing of the Temple." Like so many passages in John's gospel, this passage contains layers of meaning. Jesus is fulfilling Old Testament prophecies and also speaks of himself as the meeting place between humans and God.
What are you worried about today? God doesn't promise an easy life, but when you give your life to Him, He promises to be your help and support! He doesn't want the weight of worry and stress to crush you. The book of Philippians in the Bible says: Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. God wants to give peace—even in the midst of your worry. Have you received the peace God offers? He offers… …a relationship with Himself. …freedom from death. …His own blood for the forgiveness of your sins. …His powerful love! …peace so deep that it doesn't even make sense. Invite Jesus into your heart today—He is everything you need. radio.hopewithgod.com
Have you ever felt stuck in a rut? Like all you do is go to work, come home, eat, and sleep, just to go back to work and do it all over again the next morning? This endless cycle can feel maddening! But did you know that God never intended for our work to be a burden? In fact, God gave Adam the job of caretaker of the world as a GIFT – as an opportunity to partner with Himself! And guess what? Jesus is extending the same gift to you today! When you dedicate your work to God, you become a partner with Him. Colossians 3:23 says, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” Jesus wants to take your daily work and make it so much more than toil! He wants to partner with you in the redemption of the world! Invite Jesus into your work today.
Luke 2:10 // But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.” All the people 2 Corinthians 5:15 // He died for everyone so that those who receive his new life will no longer live for themselves. Instead, they will live for Christ Colossians 1:15-18 (MSG) // We look at this Son and see the God who cannot be seen. We look at this Son and see God's original purpose in everything created. For everything, absolutely everything, above and below, visible and invisible — everything got started in him and finds its purpose in him. He was there before any of it came into existence and holds it all together right up to this moment. Invite Jesus to take His rightful place. Involve Him in every area of your life. Ignite a fresh passion to know Him more.

In this episode, you will learn how to invite Jesus into your fitness. Together, we will find motivation in His example. Start listening to get over 20 ways to invite Jesus into your fitness. Learn how fit He was, and how He is the answer you've been missing. Fitness was an area of struggle for me, so I understand what it feels like to not know how to get fit, but God changed all of that. What about you, friend? Has getting fit been an area of struggle for you too? Give God this time today, press play, and make Him the Lord of your life, even in your fitness. He is the answer. Our God can do immeasurably more than we can ask or imagine. Yet, so often, we settle for so little. We think only about what this world can offer, and we forget about the power, grace, and love of our great God. Jesus still does miracles today. As we stay faithful to Him, we are able to see and experience the beauty and power of God. Invite Jesus into your heart and daily life, and watch Him transform the ordinary into the extraordinary.

For our last week of our Miracles series, we want to show you the first miracle of Jesus, turning water into wine. They thought they were out of wine, but there was more because of Jesus. Invite Jesus into all of what is going on and believe that He can do more than what we need. Let's choose to keep filling jars, to do what He is asking us to do so that we can experience all that He has for us. He wants to increase your faith. He has something just for you.
Many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother [Lazarus, who had died]. There are many reasons why we might get discouraged or feel like doubting or giving up at times. Perhaps things are not perfect within the Church—or at the particular church you attend. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2023 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Used with permission via RSS feed.
