121 Episode – Worship The poor Zoramites think they can only worship God in their synagogues. Am I the same? Scripture References Alma 32:5-11 Alma 34:38 2 Nephi 25:29 Alma 26:11-12 Welcome to the Church of Joy, Elder Patrick Kearon. General Conference October 2024.
In Alma chapter 43, we are thrust back into the heart of the Nephite-Lamanite conflict after Alma's poignant instructions to his sons. Outraged by the Nephites' sheltering of Zoramite converts, the Zoramites and Lamanites plot a massive attack on Jershon. The pacifist Ammonite converts are moved to Melech, while Alma, his sons, and other missionaries rally the Nephite spirits for the impending war. The Lamanites, led by Zarahemna, face a well-prepared Nephite army under the new, young leader, Moroni. The Nephites, fortified with breastplates and shields, outmaneuver the Lamanite forces, leading to a strategic victory. Moroni's brilliant tactics and the Nephites' spiritual resolve shine through in this gripping chapter, as they defend their liberty, families, and faith against overwhelming odds. As the chapter unfolds, we witness the intensity of the conflict and the Nephites' unwavering commitment to their cause. The chapter concludes with the Nephites rejoicing in their deliverance, a testament to their faith and unity in the face of adversity.
In this episode, Alma recounts his transformative encounter with an angel nearly 18 years earlier and shares the profound impact it had on his life. He begins with a prophetic oath, urging his eldest son, Helaman, to keep God's commandments and recounting the miraculous events that led to his own conversion. Alma emphasizes the importance of faith, trust in God, and the sacredness of the Nephite records. Alma also addresses his second son, Shiblon, acknowledging his steadfastness and the trials he faced while on a mission among the Zoramites. He shares his own conversion experience to illustrate the power of divine intervention and the necessity of relying on Jesus Christ for salvation. Alma concludes with heartfelt advice for Shiblon's future missionary work, emphasizing humility, diligence, and sincere prayer. This episode highlights Alma's deep faith, his commitment to his sons' spiritual growth, and the enduring significance of the Nephite records in guiding future generations.
Jake gives Dusti a lesson straight from the Mormon lesson manual about Alma, Korihor, the Zoramites, and a funny little thing called the Rameumptom. This isn't your Mom's Sunday School lesson though. Jake has added a little twist to it. Listen to find out!
Send us a Text Message. From Come Follow Me: "When Alma saw wickedness around him, he felt deep “sorrow,” “tribulation,” and “anguish of soul” (Alma 8:14). “Wickedness among this people,” he said of the Zoramites, “doth pain my soul” (Alma 31:30). He felt something similar after returning from his mission to the Zoramites—he observed that the hearts of many of the Nephites “began to wax hard, and that they began to be offended because of the strictness of the word,” and this made his heart “exceedingly sorrowful” (Alma 35:15). What did Alma do about what he saw and felt? He didn't simply become discouraged or cynical about the state of the world. Instead, “he caused that his sons should be gathered together” and taught them “things pertaining unto righteousness” (Alma 35:16). He taught them that “there is no other way or means whereby man can be saved, only in and through Christ. … Behold, he is the word of truth and righteousness” (Alma 38:9)."Support the show:www.patreon.com/SaintsintheSouth(The thoughts, ideas, and beliefs we express on this channel do not officially represent The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Alma the prophet heard the Zoramites were no longer following the teachings of the church. He took Amulek, Zeezrom, Ammon, Aaron, Omner, Corianton and Shiblon with him to serve a mission to them. He knew that preaching the word of God to them, and reminding them of the things they once knew was the greatest thing they could do. They got to Antionum and found the people were praying one at a time on a Rameumpton (holy stand) in the middle of their synagogues (churches). Every prayer was exactly the same and then they would never talk about God again. Alma set the men he brought with him apart and asked that they would have strength and wisdom to know how to bring these precious souls back to God.

Alma will teach them about planting seeds of truth and nourishing emerging young growth. He'll help them connect to ancient prophets and increase their faith one hope-filled step at a time. We'll also study Amulek's testimony of the great and last sacrifice of Jesus Christ, followed by his earnest warnings about this life being the time to meet God.Questions to Consider:Alma 32:3-4 | How are poor in the things of the world and poor in spirit connected? How does understanding the gospel allow you to be poor in the world but full of the Spirit? Alma 33:3-11 | How are our afflictions and sincerity an amplifier for our prayers? Elder Holland promised, “God hears every prayer we offer and responds to each of them according to the path He has outlined for our perfection.” How have you seen this in your life?Alma 34:10 | Are the phrases “great and last sacrfice” and “infinite and eternal sacrifice” the same or is there a reason Amulek uses both? Send us a Text Message. From Come Follow Me: "For the Zoramites, prayer consisted of standing where all could see and repeating empty, self-satisfied words. The Zoramites lacked faith in Jesus Christ—even denied His existence—and persecuted the poor (see Alma 31:9–25). By contrast, Alma and Amulek taught that prayer has more to do with what happens in our hearts than on a public platform. And if we do not show compassion toward people in need, our prayer is “vain, and availeth … nothing” (Alma 34:28). Most important, we pray because we have faith in Jesus Christ, who offers redemption through His “infinite and eternal sacrifice” (Alma 34:10). Such faith, Alma explained, starts with humility and a “desire to believe” (Alma 32:27). Over time, with constant nourishment, the word of God takes root in our hearts until it becomes “a tree springing up unto everlasting life” (Alma 32:41)."Support the Show:www.patreon.com/SaintsintheSouth(The thoughts, ideas, and beliefs we express on this channel do not officially represent The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In this episode, we delve into Alma chapter 32, where Alma and his fellow missionaries embark on a vigorous mission to preach the gospel among the Zoramites. Despite their challenges, they find success among the poor who are eager to listen. Alma discovers the humble hearts of the poor and teaches them that they can worship God anywhere, not just in synagogues. Alma shares a powerful parable about faith, comparing it to planting a seed that can grow into a tree bearing fruit. He emphasizes the importance of nurturing faith with diligence and patience. Alma's teachings highlight that true faith does not rely on signs but on hope for things unseen. The episode also explores Amulek's testimony, who joins Alma in teaching the Zoramites about the coming of Christ and the significance of the atonement. Amulek explains that the atonement is based on mercy, not justice, and calls the people to repent and seek God's mercy. Through Alma and Amulek's teachings, we learn about the necessity of faith, repentance, and the powerful impact of the atonement. This episode provides profound insights into the principles of faith and the eternal plan of salvation.
When you compare the stark contrast between the Zoramites arrogant and judgmental prayer with the humble and hopeful prayer of Alma - I think there are some great lessons to be learned for us. If you'd like to view the video that goes with this podcast, click here

Alma will also be sent to teach the apostate Zoramites. They had separated from the Church and concocted their own version of the gospel. Send us a Text Message. From Come Follow Me:The accounts in Alma 30–31 clearly demonstrate the power of words—for evil and for good. The “flattering” and “great swelling words” of a false teacher named Korihor threatened to bring “many souls down to destruction” (Alma 30:31, 47). Similarly, the teachings of a Nephite dissenter named Zoram led a whole group of people to fall “into great errors” and “pervert the ways of the Lord” (Alma 31:9, 11).In contrast, Alma had unwavering faith that the word of God would have a “more powerful effect upon the minds of the people than the sword, or anything else” (Alma 31:5). Alma's words expressed eternal truth and drew upon the powers of Jesus Christ to silence Korihor (see Alma 30:39–50), and they invited His blessing on those who went with him to bring the Zoramites back to the truth (see Alma 31:31–38). These are valuable examples for followers of Christ today when false messages are common. We can find truth by trusting, as Alma did, “the virtue of the word of God” (Alma 31:5).The thoughts, ideas, and beliefs we express on this channel do not officially represent The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The 16th year of the reign of the judges marks a significant period of peace after a devastating war, as the Nephites and the children of Ammon recover and honor the law of Moses. However, this tranquility is shattered in the 17th year by the emergence of Korihor, an eloquent Antichrist who preaches against the coming of Christ and the teachings of the prophets. Korihor's persuasive rhetoric leads many Nephites astray, but he faces resistance from the people of Ammon and the high priests in various lands. Ultimately, he is brought before Alma, who challenges Korihor's beliefs and, after a dramatic confrontation, strikes him dumb. Korihor confesses his deceit, revealing that he was influenced by the devil. As Korihor wanders, begging for food, his story serves as a cautionary tale, emphasizing that Satan abandons his followers in times of need. Meanwhile, Alma and his missionary companions prepare to counter the growing apostasy among the Zoramites, showcasing the enduring battle between faith and falsehood in the land of Zarahemla.
An in-depth study of Alma 30-31, recounting the preaching of Korihor and the Zoramites upon the Rameumptom. This lesson focuses on targeting the Atonement, anti-religious rhetoric, irrationality and authoritarianism, rationalizing sin, the argument from design, sign-seeking, the sense of superiority, trying the virtue of the word of God, the gifts of the Spirit, and more.

The middle chapters of the Book of Alma have a strong emphasis on missionary stories and events. Alma 9-14 is about Alma and Amulek's preaching in Ammonihah. Alma 17-26 centers us on Ammon with King Lamoni and Aaron with Lamoni's father. Last, Alma 30-34 take us to Alma and Amulek's missionary encounters with Korihor and the Zoramites. In this episode, BYU professors John Hilton, Jan Martin, Tyler Griffin, and Dan Belnap explore these missionary journeys and teachings in an inspiring scripture conversation.
The missionaries came for dinner and shared a spiritual thought. The newest missionary shared a spiritual insight from his personal scripture. Studying Alma 38 about Shiblon really touched him. That led my thoughts back to myself when I was a teenager and I was experiencing different emotions around my friendships and the church. At 15, 16, one night while I was laying in bed, I read Alma 38 which showed me how much Heavenly Father was aware of me and my life. He knows us all and wants to remind us that he is always close by and aware of our needs and desires. Alma 38: 2 And now, my son, I trust that I shall have great joy in you, because of your steadiness and your faithfulness unto God; for as you have commenced in your youth to look to the Lord your God, even so I hope that you will continue in keeping his commandments; for blessed is he that endureth to the end. 3 I say unto you, my son, that I have had great joy in thee already, because of thy faithfulness and thy diligence, and thy patience and thy long-suffering among the people of the Zoramites. 5 And now my son, Shiblon, I would that ye should remember, that as much as ye shall put your trust in God even so much ye shall be delivered out of your trials, and your troubles, and your afflictions, and ye shall be lifted up at the last day. bethnewellcoaching@gmail.com

After Alma teaches the poor Zoramites, Amulek also teaches them, and they decide to join the people of God.
Some of the Zoramites want to hear what Alma has to say. Especially the poor people who have been kicked out of the synagogues.
After learning that the Zoramites were making some very interesting choices, Alma takes a team of his friends and sons to go and teach them.
It is apparent that one property of self-deception is a need to have others validate your wrong-ness (as right-ness). You can't be settled or peaceful about your untruthfulness, to use a term I like to use. You must constantly seek justification from others, or attempted justification, we might say, since it is not real and is never satisfied. The scriptures are filled with examples of people who weren't satisfied to ignore the testimony of the prophets or the righteous and go about their lives. They needed to cancel them - kick them out of their cities, or kill them. The Zoramites couldn't even handle that the righteous whom they had kicked out were accepted by another people, and so they began a great war. Obviously the crucifixion of the Savior is another example of this need to cancel the person who is challenging your erroneous beliefs and works. There's no, oh well I don't feel the way he does but he's free to express and live his beliefs as long as my rights are maintained. No, there's not a feeling of equality, but a need to squelch the opposing viewpoint, to the point of harm. So there are extreme examples and there are far more common examples of people who are in the wrong seeking to impose their views on others, or not being comfortable with others having differing views. I don't know if I need to cite current societal trends, probably not. But if your view is correct and in line with God and your knowledge of the truth, through the light of Christ, which everybody has constantly, you don't have this need. You might not agree with people, their views may disturb you in a way, but not because it threatens your correctness. You might have a desire to convince others to your way of thinking, but it's out of love and a desire to do good and serve God and fellow man. So this becomes a clue to everybody, it seems to me, to detect if you're in the wrong about something or not. Do you feel a need for others to believe something you believe? Do you feel a need to silence or eliminate those who don't? If so, it's time to examine your position. This happens in more subtle ways every day in normal interactions, and that should probably be talked about sometime...

Alma 32-35How do we experiment upon the word of God? How do we plant the word of God into our hearts? How do we nurture it? How do we exercise faith?Alma and Amulek teach the poor among the Zoramites who had been humbled because of the mistreatment of their neighbors, that they can be spiritually self-reliant by likening the word of God to a seed.

Korihor's anti-Christ doctrines were gaining popularity among many. Having witnessed its damage tot he faith of many people, including the Zoramites, Alma resolved that “the preaching of the word… had had more powerful effect upon the minds of the people than the sword, or anything else… therefore Alma thought it was expedient that they should try the virtue of the word of God.”
Alma teaches the poor Zoramites that to gain a testimony you have to plant the word of God and allow it to grow like a seed.

Abstract: The accounts of the Anti-Christ, Korihor, and of Alma's mission to the Zoramites raise a variety of apparently unanswered questions. These involve Korihor's origins, the reason for the similarity of his beliefs to those of the Zoramites, and why he switched so quickly from an atheistic attack to an agnostic plea. Another intriguing question is […] The post The Rise and Fall of Korihor, a Zoramite: A New Look at the Failed Mission of an Agent of Zoram first appeared on The Interpreter Foundation.

This is a story about the two cities of the Zoramites. The first city has large brown homes, tall silver statues, gray fountains, pink gardens, green grass and rainbow colored churches. And when you walk into that city, your eyes get big and you look from side to side and up and down because everywhere, everything you see is big and bright and beautiful—even the people! And tucked into the shadows and corners of this big beautiful city is the second city. The homes in this second city are very small, and very dirty. If you were visiting the Zoramites, you would probably miss this place, even though it would be right under your nose. Everything looks duller, and smaller, and a little uglier here—even the people. They sit together under the big trees that hide their houses from the road so that they will not burn up in the hot sun. But some of the people are missing. They are away in the big shiny city, cleaning the homes, building the statues and fountains, weeding the garden, mowing the grass, painting the churches. If you are wondering who built the big shiny city, these are the people. Listen on for the full story, and for a sermon about a seed.

You have now heard many examples of people learning about God and Jesus and being blessed. So it is easy to believe that believing in God will make you better. And people who believe in God will get better and better and better. And everyone else will get worse and worse and worse. And God will bless the righteous and they will be wealthy and happy. And soon enough you will be able to tell who is righteous because they will be so blessed. They will all be beautiful people, with big houses, and swimming pools in their big yards. And the wicked will be poor and ugly. This is not true. But some people believe it. Even back in the Book of Mormon people believed it. They were called the Zoramites.
