Who were the Ammonites? Well, they're one of the many “ites” mentioned in the Bible. But who were these people?
As the wall was completed, the leadership of the returning Jews formally renewed their covenant with God preparatory to a dedication ceremony for the wall. After that, Nehemiah returned to Persia for a time. When he returned, he found that the Jews had already backslidden. They were working on Shabbat, not giving the Levites their portion of the tithes and continued intermarriage with the pagan inhabitants of the land. To top it off, the priests had moved an Ammonite into the Temple.

In Chapter 26, Ezekiel's Oracles Against the Nations moves onto the city of Tyre, and the prophet stays fixated on Tyre for three chapters. It is surprising that Ezekiel only glances at the Ammonites, Moabites, Edomites, and Philistines while he gives Tyre a jaundiced stare-down. Israel had long-running enmities with the first named people groups. Tyre was little more to Israel than an enviable trade rival. The Ammonites, Moabites, Edomites, and Philistines were Jerusalem's closest neighbors. Tyre was 100 miles north of Jerusalem. Still, Ezekiel's audience would have found his predictions of Tyre's downfall impossible. Tyre's wealth had no limits, and the island stronghold was impenetrable.Support the show

The story is found in 1 Samuel 12. In this incident, the prophet addresses “all Israel.” Mostly, he calls them to repentance and urges them to live righteous lives. But the prophet also lies in his address! He criticizes the people for responding to a threat coming from the Ammonite king, Nahash. According to Samuel, when this king threatened Israel, they asked for the prophet to anoint a king. But that was not true. It was when the people saw that Samuel was old and that his sons were corrupt, that they asked for a king. In this speech, Samuel does not even mention his sons' corruption. Even a great prophet like Samuel has to be discerned when he speaks, since he does not always speak truthfully.

After the king of the Ammonites died, David tried to show kindness to his son, Hanun. But Hanun got ugly. He seized David's envoys, shaved off half of each man's beard, cut off their garments at the buttocks, and sent them away. (Verse 4) It was on and cracking after that. David's army went to battle against the Ammonites and the Arameans who tried to help them. Nathan rebukes David in chapter 12. He tells him a story about a rich man and a poor man. When the rich man had a visitor, he killed the one little ewe lamb that belonged to the poor man, rather than taking one of his own many sheep, and served it to the traveler. David was livid! He was ready to put the man to death! “Then Nathan said to David, ‘You are the man!'” (Verse 7) Nathan tells David that calamity is going to come on his house. People are going to sleep with his wives in broad daylight (although he did it in secret). David repents. The Lord takes away his sin but the son born to David has to die. And he does. Later, David goes to Bathsheba again and she gets pregnant with Solomon. At the end of the chapter, Joab fights against Rabbah of the Ammonites and captures the royal citadel. He says, “I have fought against Rabbah and taken its water supply. Now muster the rest of the troops and besiege the city and capture it. He had wealth and wisdom but found it all to be ________________. Three Things that Contributed to Solomon's Downfall. 1. Solomon craved ________________. Deuteronomy 17:16-17 “The king must not build up a large stable of horses for himself or send his people to Egypt to buy horses, for the Lord has told you, ‘You must never return to Egypt.' 17 The king must not take many wives for himself, because they will turn his heart away from the Lord. And he must not accumulate large amounts of wealth in silver and gold for himself. 1 Kings 10:28 Solomon's horses were imported from Egypt and from Cilicia; the king's traders acquired them from Cilicia at the standard price. 1 Kings 10:14-15; 21 Each year Solomon received about 25 tons of gold. 15 This did not include the additional revenue he received from merchants and traders, all the kings of Arabia, and the governors of the land. 21 All of King Solomon's drinking cups were solid gold, as were all the utensils in the Palace of the Forest of Lebanon. They were not made of silver, for silver was considered worthless in Solomon's day! 2. Solomon ________________ after many women. 1 Kings 11:1-3 Now King Solomon loved many foreign women. Besides Pharaoh's daughter, he married women from Moab, Ammon, Edom, Sidon, and from among the Hittites. 2 The Lord had clearly instructed the people of Israel, “You must not marry them, because they will turn your hearts to their gods.” Yet Solomon insisted on loving them anyway. 3 He had 700 wives of royal birth and 300 concubines. And in fact, they did turn his heart away from the Lord. 3. Solomon ________________ foreign gods. 1 Kings 11:4-9 In Solomon's old age, they turned his heart to worship other gods instead of being completely faithful to the Lord his God, as his father, David, had been. 5 Solomon worshiped Ashtoreth, the goddess of the Sidonians, and Molech, the detestable god of the Ammonites. 6 In this way, Solomon did what was evil in the Lord's sight; he refused to follow the Lord completely, as his father, David, had done. 7 On the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, he even built a pagan shrine for Chemosh, the detestable god of Moab, and another for Molech, the detestable god of the Ammonites. 8 Solomon built such shrines for all his foreign wives to use for burning incense and sacrificing to their gods. 9 The Lord was very angry with Solomon, for his heart had turned away from the Lord, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice. Important we stay ________________ in God's Word.
The biblical character Lot presents a unique challenge. He appears in three portions, Noach this week, Lekh L'kha next week, and Va-yera two weeks from now. He is a supporting actor in multiple chapters in Genesis: chapters 11, 12, 13, 14, and 19. And yet no one ever talks about him. We don't mine his story. We avoid him. There is good reason why we stay away from Lot. The end of his story is gross, in fact doubly gross. Incomprehensibly, he offers his two virgin daughters to the rapists of Sodom in a bizarre attempt to protect the visitor/angels from being raped. After God destroys Sodom, and Lot and his daughters escape to a cave, those daughters get him drunk, sleep with him, get pregnant, and thereby create the nations of the Moabites and Ammonites. Yuck. The cringe factor of these two concluding Lot stories explains why we never talk about Lot. But Lot has a lot to teach us. What do we learn from the early and middle parts of his story that can help explain its unspeakable end? Lot's story is a cautionary tale. What are its lessons? To answer these questions, we will consult an evocative and wise passage from Rambam's Mishneh Torah, Hilkhot De'ah, 6:1-2.
Genesis 19 is one of the most complex and intense chapters in the Bible, focusing on the story of Sodom and Gomorrah's destruction and the escape of Lot, Abraham's nephew, and his family. This chapter, filled with powerful themes of judgment, mercy, and the consequences of moral decay, serves as a sobering reminder of the choices we make and their lasting impacts. Here's a closer look at Genesis 19. The Angels' Arrival and the Corruption of Sodom Genesis 19 opens with two angels arriving at Sodom in the evening. Lot, seeing them, rises to greet them and insists they stay at his home, demonstrating his hospitality and awareness of the dangers the city posed. Sodom had a reputation for wickedness, and Lot's eagerness to protect the strangers reveals both his compassion and his understanding of Sodom's moral degradation. That night, the men of Sodom—young and old—surround Lot's house, demanding that he bring out the guests so they could assault them. The depravity displayed here is disturbing, showing just how far the city's inhabitants had fallen. This moment reveals a society that had abandoned all sense of justice and respect, becoming consumed by selfish desires. Lot's response is equally troubling. In his desperation to protect his guests, he offers his own daughters to the crowd instead. This action raises difficult questions about Lot's judgment, reflecting the complex nature of human responses under intense pressure. Judgment and Mercy In response to the crowd's demands, the angels intervene, striking the men with blindness. They reveal to Lot that they have been sent to destroy Sodom and urge him to gather his family and flee. Lot's reaction—hesitation and even reluctance—indicates that he may have grown attached to the city despite its wickedness, mirroring how we, too, can sometimes cling to comfort or familiarity, even when it leads us away from God's will. When Lot finally gathers his family, his future sons-in-law refuse to leave, thinking he's joking. This response highlights how deeply ingrained the complacency and moral decay of Sodom had become, blinding people to the dangers around them and the need for change. The angels, merciful in their mission, physically lead Lot, his wife, and his two daughters out of the city, sparing them despite their hesitation. The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, raining down fire and sulfur, is a stark judgment against a society that has turned away from righteousness. But within this judgment is an act of mercy, as God spares Lot's family, showing that divine justice is often coupled with compassion. Lot's Wife: The Cost of Looking Back As they flee, the angels warn Lot's family not to look back. However, Lot's wife, unable to detach herself from her past life in Sodom, turns back, and in doing so, becomes a pillar of salt. This transformation is symbolic of the consequences of holding onto past attachments, even when God offers a path toward new beginnings. Lot's wife's fate serves as a reminder that clinging to the past, especially when it's a source of corruption or moral compromise, can prevent us from moving forward. Lot and His Daughters: A Troubling Legacy The chapter doesn't end with Sodom's destruction. Lot and his daughters settle in a cave, where the story takes a tragic turn. Fearing they won't have descendants, Lot's daughters conspire to have children through their father, leading to the births of Moab and Ben-Ammi, ancestors of the Moabites and Ammonites. This act reflects how deeply the corrupt culture of Sodom had influenced Lot's family, even as they escaped its physical destruction. Daily Dose of Hope October 15, 2024 Day 3 of Week 29 Scripture: 2 Chr 19-20; 2 Kings 1; Psalm 20; Matthew 3 Welcome back to the Daily Dose of Hope, the devotional and podcast that complements the New Hope Church Bible reading plan. It's Tuesday and I know the days have started to blur together for some of you who still don't have power. Hurricane fatigue is a real thing! Let's be sure to take care of each other. Also, I just wanted to remind all of you that Pastor Lavetta and I are starting our trek to Mozambique today. We are traveling with Zoe Empowers to visit with our New Hope orphan empowerment group. Please be in prayer for us. To be honest, the trip comes at such a rough time but I felt very strongly that God wants us to go. We'll return on October 27. Keep our husbands in prayer too, as they hold down the fort!!! Our first Old Testament passage for today is 2 Chronicles 19-20. The beginning of chapter 19 is interesting. Jehoshaphat was admonished for working with Ahab, the evil Northern King. The seer who brought the news told Jehoshaphat that the wrath of the Lord would be upon him. In other ways, Jehoshaphat was a good king, getting rid of the pagan shrines and temples. But clearly God had higher expectations for him. He was supposed to trust God in all things, including wars and political alliances. In this way, he failed. But that does not stop the Southern king from following God. He appoints judges to serve under the Levites. Their role was to manage disputes and administer the law of the Lord. In chapter 20, we find that Judah is being threatened by outside nations once again. This certainly is an area of the world that has been warring for thousands of years! But this time, Jehoshaphat does it right – he and his people go to the Lord first. And God promises to fight their battle for them. The people sing praises while God takes care of their enemies. This is so fascinating. They are literally singing and God is just ambushing the Ammonites. Once the battle was over, the people rejoiced some more, and all the surrounding nations were fearful of the Lord. But after this high and holy moment, in which they see the hand of God in a powerful way, Jehoshaphat messes up again. He makes another alliance with the Northern king, Ahaziah, who is quite evil. This is the same thing he did before! You wonder what he was thinking. He knows God, he has seen the hand of God, and yet, he falls into the same trap. I wonder if some of us can relate. We know God, we believe in God, we have seen his hand, and we still keep making the same mistakes. Oh, how we need Jesus! Today, we also begin 2 Kings, which continues 1 Kings without any kind of break. We immediately find that the clash between Elijah, a prophet of Yahweh, and the Israelite monarchy continues. Despite past warnings, Ahaziah, the king of the Northern Kingdom, is worshiping and consulting with other gods. Thus, Yahweh, the one true God will continue to demonstrate that he is supreme. In today's chapter, Yahweh demonstrates his power and supremacy through the sending of fire. Make sure you read the whole text. The king has become injured and wants to see if he will recover from his injury. He sends some messengers to consult the god, Baal-Zebub, to provide guidance on his recovery. One has to stop and wonder what in the world he was thinking. Why is he intentionally snubbing Yahweh to consult a false god? His messengers are met by Elijah the prophet who expresses God's anger at the situation. Through Elijah, God makes it clear that Ahaziah will not recover but rather will die in his bed. In an attempt to get more clarity (or possibly a new prophecy), the king sends several groups of soldiers to summon Elijah. The first two groups are consumed by fire. Ahaziah, clearly not learning the lesson, sends a third group. This group pleads for mercy from Elijah, as they know their lives are in danger. They are allowed to live, Elijah addresses the king, and Ahaziah dies shortly after. What are we to make of this? I don't understand why the king of Israel insisted on consulting Baal rather than Yahweh. But what I do know is that God wants us to always consult him first. When we are in trouble, instead of trying to figure it out ourselves, God desires that we reach out to him FIRST. God loves us, God truly wants the best for us, and God wants to lead us in his direction. We may think we are so much better than Ahaziah but in many ways, we do exactly the same thing. We may not consult a false god, but we try to do life on our own. Yet, we have a God who is powerful and good. Seek God first. Listen. Obey. Our New Testament passage is Matthew 3. This includes both an introduction to the ministry of John the Baptist and Jesus' baptism. Why did Jesus feel the need to get baptized? Obviously, he didn't need it – he had no sin, there was no need for cleansing. But his baptism was a sign of his obedience to God's will; he would act faithfully to his purpose of bringing salvation to all people. And God expresses his agreement by sending the Holy Spirit and confirming Jesus' identity by saying, This is my Son whom I love... It's in Jesus' baptism that we see a beautiful picture of the Trinity. Blessings, Pastor Vicki

In 2023 he was honored with an Academy Award and a BAFTA in the Best Score category for his work on All Quiet on the Western Front (directed by Edward Berger). His score to Garth Davis' Oscar-nominated film Lion, which he composed in collaboration with Dustin O'Halloran, was nominated for multiple awards: Oscar for Best Original Score, Golden Globe for Best Original Score, Best Score at the Critics' Choice Awards, and for Best Film Music at the BAFTAs. Bertelmann has provided music for several leading films and television series. He composed the score for Patrick Melrose, The Old Guard, Stowaway, the episode “Red Book” from Black Mirror, and Life After Life for BBC. He also composed film scores for Adrift, the 2018 romantic drama directed by Baltasa Kormákur, and, again in collaboration with O'Halloran, for Ammonite, which was short-listed for The Academy Awards in 2020. In 2022, he scored War Sailor, which was an official selection at the Toronto International Film Festival. Volker Bertelmann has just worked with Oscar-winning director Edward Berger again on the film Conclave, which was presented at the Toronto Film Festival in 2024. And I said to the king, “If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your sight, that you send me to Judah, to the city of my fathers' graves, that I may rebuild it.” And the king said to me (the queen sitting beside him), “How long will you be gone, and when will you return?” So it pleased the king to send me when I had given him a time. And I said to the king, “If it pleases the king, let letters be given me to the governors of the province Beyond the River, that they may let me pass through until I come to Judah, and a letter to Asaph, the keeper of the king's forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the fortress of the temple, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall occupy.” And the king granted me what I asked, for the good hand of my God was upon me. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life. To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. This charge I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting this, some have made shipwreck of their faith, among whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme. The Ten Commandments What is the Seventh Commandment? You shall not steal. What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not take our neighbor's money or possessions, or get them in any dishonest way, but help him to improve and protect his possessions and income.
Judges 11 verses 29 to 40. At that time the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah, and he went throughout the land of Gilead and Manasseh, including Mizpah in Gilead, and from there he led an army against the Ammonites. And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord. He said, “If you give me victory over the Ammonites, I will give to the Lord whatever comes out of my house to meet me when I return in triumph. I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering.” So Jephthah led his army against the Ammonites, and the Lord gave him victory. He crushed the Ammonites, devastating about twenty towns from Aroer to an area near Minnith and as far away as Abel-keramim. In this way Israel defeated the Ammonites. When Jephthah returned home to Mizpah, his daughter came out to meet him, playing on a tambourine and dancing for joy. She was his one and only child; he had no other sons or daughters. When he saw her, he tore his clothes in anguish. “Oh, my daughter!” he cried out. “You have completely destroyed me! You've brought disaster on me! For I have made a vow to the Lord, and I cannot take it back.” And she said, “Father, if you have made a vow to the Lord, you must do to me what you have vowed, for the Lord has given you a great victory over your enemies, the Ammonites. But first let me do this one thing: Let me go up and roam in the hills and weep with my friends for two months, because I will die a virgin.” “You may go,” Jephthah said. And he sent her away for two months. She and her friends went into the hills and wept because she would never have children. When she returned home, her father kept the vow he had made, and she died a virgin. So it has become a custom in Israel for young Israelite women to go away for four days each year to lament the fate of Jephthah's daughter.
Judges 12 verses 1 to 6. Then the people of Ephraim mobilized an army and crossed over the Jordan River to Zaphon. They sent this message to Jephthah: “Why didn't you call for us to help you fight against the Ammonites? We are going to burn down your house with you in it!” Jephthah replied, “I summoned you at the beginning of the dispute, but you refused to come! You failed to help us in our struggle against Ammon. So when I realized you weren't coming, I risked my life and went to battle without you, and the Lord gave me victory over the Ammonites. So why have you now come to fight me?” The people of Ephraim responded, “You men of Gilead are nothing more than fugitives from Ephraim and Manasseh.” So Jephthah gathered all the men of Gilead and attacked the men of Ephraim and defeated them. Jephthah captured the shallow crossings of the Jordan River, and whenever a fugitive from Ephraim tried to go back across, the men of Gilead would challenge him. “Are you a member of the tribe of Ephraim?” they would ask. If the man said, “No, I'm not,” they would tell him to say “Shibboleth.” If he was from Ephraim, he would say “Sibboleth,” because people from Ephraim cannot pronounce the word correctly. Then they would take him and kill him at the shallow crossings of the Jordan. In all, 42,000 Ephraimites were killed at that time.
In this episode, we discuss the story of Saul's battle against the Ammonites in 1 Samuel 11, an important but often overlooked chapter in Israel's history. This event represents stage two in the process of becoming a king in ancient Israel: the testing or proving of the king in battle. Stage one is the anointing, which we covered in 1 Samuel 9–10, and stage three is the coronation, a celebration of the king after proving their trustworthiness in battle. Saul, who was fearful and hesitant when first proclaimed king, is depicted as a passive leader at the outset of this story. Rather than rallying Israel to fight its enemies, he is found working in the fields, far removed from his royal duty. Yet, despite his reluctant and timid leadership, Saul steps up when the people are threatened by the Ammonites. He leads Israel to a victorious battle, even crediting the victory to God. By the end of this story, Saul has successfully passed through stage two, proving himself worthy of the kingship, at least for the moment. But how does Saul's experience compare to the ultimate King, Jesus Christ? We turn to Hebrews 2:10 to see how Jesus passed through His own stage two of proving Himself. Unlike Saul, whose test was a single battle, Jesus' proving was an entire life of struggle, overcoming the temptations and challenges of living in human flesh. Hebrews tells us that Jesus was made perfect through suffering, demonstrating His worthiness to be the King who brings salvation. Through His continuous victory over sin and temptation, Jesus proves Himself as the perfect King who pioneers and perfects a new humanity within himself, opening the way for others to fllow in his steps, all the way to glory. The temple is finished. The wall is finished. The people have rededicated themselves to the Lord's house, and on today's episode, the remnant of Israel rejoices. With the work completed, Nehemiah returns to Persia to serve under King Artaxerxes once again, just as he promised. All is right with the world, and God's people serve Him faithfully from then on, right? Wrong! In fact, not long after Nehemiah leaves, the work of the temple is all but abandoned and Eliashib, who is in charge of the temple storehouses, clears out a room for Tobiah the Ammonite official, who happens to be a relative. Jeremiah tells us that after all the more important people were taken away to Babylon those who remained in Judah were in disarray. The one the Babylonians had put in charge (Gedaliah) had been murdered and others also (Ch.41 v.1-8); the murderers fled to the Ammonites.(v.15). Today's chapter (42) tells us how the remaining people “from the least to the greatest, came near and said to Jeremiah the prophet. ‘Let our plea for mercy come before you, and pray to the LORD your God for us … that the LORD your God may show us the way we should go …' ” [v.1-3] Notice they see the LORD as Jeremiah's God – not as theirs! Jeremiah responds by saying to them, “I will pray to the LORD your God according to your request , and whatever the LORD answers you I will tell you. I will keep nothing back from you.” [v.4] “Then they said to Jeremiah, ‘May the LORD be a true and faithful witness against us if we do not act according to all the word with which the LORD your God sends you to us. Whether it is good or bad …” [v.5,6] Then at last they accept the LORD as their God “that it may be well with us when we obey the voice of the LORD our God.” [v.7] Ten days later Jeremiah receives “the word of the LORD “ and “summoned … all the people from the least to the greatest.” [v.8] The message is that if they remain in Judah, “then I will build you up … I will plant you… do not fear the king of Babylon … I will grant you mercy” [v.10-12] He warns them that to go to Egypt will be a disaster! Tomorrow's chapter will start by telling us the sequel “when Jeremiah had finished speaking … all the insolent men said … ‘you are telling a lie …” [v.1,2] and “all the people did not obey the voice of the LORD” [v.4] Sadly we can make a comparison of this with the attitude of many to the Bible; so many look to try to find what they want to believe, like believing they go to heaven when the die to a kingdom in heaven and not on this earth – and turn away from those who tell them otherwise. The Bible is the source of all truth, let us read it ever more diligently and keep bringing its true message to others – even though they may say, “you are telling a lie.” We must do this because the LORD is our God.
Daily Dose of Hope August 15, 2024 Day 5 of Week 20 Scripture: 2 Samuel 11-12; I Chronicles 20; Psalm 51; Acts 27 Welcome back to the Daily Dose of Hope, the devotional that complements the New Hope Bible reading plan. We are nearing the end of week 20 of consistent Bible reading. I would love to hear how God is teaching you and what God may be revealing to you through his Word. As usual, let's get started with 2 Samuel. We begin in chapter 11. This is a story that most of us know too well. David messes up bigtime. But I think it's important that we realize this didn't just happen. There were certain circumstances that led David down this dark path. Let's look at the beginning of the chapter. In the very first verse, it says that it was springtime when the kings go off to war. We talked about this yesterday with our I Chronicles passage and we find it now in 2 Samuel. David sent his commander, Joab, off to war but he stays in Jerusalem. David is a warrior. That's his giftedness. But rather than go to war with his men, he decides to lounge around Jerusalem. We all need downtime but there is a difference between downtime and idleness. For whatever reason, David decides not to do what he is called to do and to simply waste time in the palace. When we don't feel purposeful, when we have too much time on our hands, when we're not actively engaging in our faith, then that's usually when things go awry. And boy did things go wrong for David. You know the story. He sees Bathsheba bathing (hmmm...why was this Godly king hanging on the roof watching the women bathe?), finds her beautiful, and decides he must have her. I want you to think about this. He is the king of Israel. She is the wife of a soldier. My guess is she doesn't have a lot of choice in the situation. There is something we call that in today's language–rape. This man, who has always been so dedicated to God, going to great lengths to follow God's will, has now raped a woman. But it gets worse. She becomes pregnant. To cover-up this issue, he sends Uriah, Bathsheba's husband, into battle on the front lines, where he will surely be killed. Now, David has added murder to his list of offenses. After Bathsheba mourns her husband, David brings her into his home to be his wife. But the Lord was displeased. So we have to ask–what in the world happened to David? From chapter 10 and the battle with the Ammonites to today's chapter, what went on in David's heart and mind? To say he drifted from God would kind of be an understatement. The idleness probably didn't help but there had to be more, much more. He became like the kings in the nations around him. He forgot who he was and to whom he belonged. He totally lost his way. As I reflected on this chapter and passed some pretty significant judgment on David, God really hit me over the head. Friends, we all have the potential to lose our way. We all have the potential to be David and I think it behooves us to recognize that. What's the answer then? I don't exactly know except that we have to be very, very intentional to walk close to Jesus every single day, every single second. On our own, we drift and we lose our way. We allow all kinds of sin to creep into our hearts and lives. We need Jesus. You need Jesus. I need Jesus. Not a little Jesus every now and then. But all of Jesus all the time. Let's head over to chapter 12. It is the job of the prophet to speak truth to power. In this situation, the prophet Nathan gets the fun job of telling David that he sinned against God. Some men may have gotten angry or defensive but David accepts the truth. He experiences conviction and is repentant. God's response is that while David won't die, his child with Bathsheba will. I have always struggled with this text. Why did the baby have to die? After all, it was David who sinned against the Lord. Yet, he gets to live and the innocent one dies. And then it hit me–our sin always has ugly consequences. Look at the entire Biblical narrative–sin is destructive and it is harmful to the people around us and our communities. It is harmful to the Kingdom. We might not like to think about it but our sin always has consequences. Our sin hurts others, often hurting those who are innocent and vulnerable. I'll just stop there for today. I think I might have gotten a bit ahead of myself yesterday and gone through I Chronicles 20. If you recall, it speaks to how King David did not go off to war with his men. Yes, they end up victorious. But what the chapter doesn't speak of is what happened at home in the palace. We've already talked about it so I'll stop there. But the omission is glaring. Take time to read the psalm for today but I'm not going to spend much time going over it. I really want to get to Acts 27. We find that Paul's journey continues. This time, he is on his way to Rome. They hit very severe weather, which threatens to kill all those on board. It must have been quite dire, as they throw their cargo overboard to lighten up the ship. It sounds like weeks and weeks of hunger and misery. They finally see land. By this point, there isn't much left of the ship. The soldiers want to kill the prisoners but the centurion stops them, as he wanted to ensure that Paul was spared. It seems that the situation was a bit of a free for all; those who could swim, swam to shore. Others grabbed pieces of floating debris and yet all managed to get to shore safely. This is such an interesting passage to me. The Scripture says there were 276 men on board that ship. They must have all been praying in whatever way they were accustomed to do so. I can't help but think that Paul was praying boldly and witnessing to all the men on board. In such a situation, it seems highly likely people would be very open to hearing about the eternal life offered through faith in Jesus. I wonder if that is why the centurion was so intent on saving Paul's life. Had he become a follower of Jesus? More tomorrow. Blessings, Pastor Vicki
Daily Dose of Hope August 14, 2024 Day 4 of Week 20 Scripture: 2 Samuel 9-10; 1 Chronicles 18-19; Psalm 89; Acts 26 Welcome back, everyone, to the Daily Dose of Hope, the devotional and podcast that complements the New Hope Church Bible reading plan. We have a lot of Scripture to talk about today so let's get to it. Let's get started with 2 Samuel. In 2 Samuel chapter 9, we see David making good on his promise to Saul and his commitment to Jonathan, Saul's son. Despite the fact that Saul tried to kill David numerous times, it was David's commitment to care for Saul's descendants. He also wanted to “show kindness for Jonathan's sake.” If you recall, Jonathan was David's best friend who risked his own life to save David's. Thus, David asks one of Saul's former servants, named Ziba, if there are any descendants of Saul remaining. Ziba is honest and tells David about one of Jonathan's sons who lives in self-imposed exile with his family. This son's name was Mephibosheth and he was disabled. David then offers Mephibosheth the land that belonged to Saul and includes him at the royal table. Mephibosheth asks, “What is your servant, that you should notice a dead dog like me?” It reminded me of our discussion yesterday, when David asks God, “Who am I that you should bless me?” Again, we have this beautiful picture of grace. Let's head over to chapter 10. In an attempt to show kindness and build alliances, David sends a delegation to the new king of the Ammonites. David had a good relationship with the king's father and wanted to continue that relationship with the king. But the new king was not so wise. His advisors tell him that this delegation from Israel may actually be spies, sizing up the area for a conquest. The king takes their advice to heart, or possibly wants to exert his independence from the more powerful Israel, so he humiliates the men in the delegation by sending them home with half a beard and half-naked. In those days, this was basically a declaration of war. The Ammonites expected Israel to respond militarily so they hire mercenaries, the Arameans, to help them fight. But neither group is a match for the army of Israel, led by Joab. J.oab is strategic and brave, leading the men to victory despite formidable odds. In the end, the Ammonites plan backfired. Israel becomes the strongest nation in the area, politically, militarily, and economically. With God on their side, they cannot be stopped. Our passage from I Chronicles details several different battles during which the army of Israel was victorious. In I Chronicles 18 (as in 2 Kings 10 - it's the same story), the Hebrews are humiliated by the Ammonites and they respond by setting up battle lines. With Joab and David commanding the army, Israel is victorious. God is clearly with them. I Chronicles 19 is a little different. Yes, it's about war. The Israeli army conquers Rappha. But it also says that in the spring, the kings go off to war. Did you notice that David did not go? On first glance, that's really puzzling. David was excellent in battle. Maybe he didn't think this offensive was worth his time or he was just getting lazy. But he should have been with his men. What we know is that David staying home led to trouble. He saw a woman bathing. Maybe you have heard of her? Her name is Bathsheba. He then commits adultery (many would say rape because there is no way she had any say in the matter). When she ends up pregnant, he sends her husband, Uriah, to the front lines to be killed (in the same battle, he himself should have participated). Certainly, a lot happened from the time David sent his men off to war and their conquering of Rappah. It's curious that Chronicles does not chronicle this very significant event. What are your thoughts about this? Why does the chronicler leave this out of the passage? Psalm 89 is written by Ethan the Ezrahite. He was a very wise man. He is mentioned in I Chronicles 2 and I Kings 4. His psalm praises God and also reaffirms God's covenant with David. No matter what David's sons do (and David's sons have some big issues that we will be talking about soon), God will keep his promise to David. His throne will last forever. Of course, we know that it is Jesus who will sit on David's throne and fulfill the covenant but that isn't obvious to anyone yet. Our New Testament passage is Acts 26. Now, Paul is pleading his case before King Agrippa, to be more precise King Herod Agrippa II. Let's think about the power-hungry and unethical family of Herodians that had lorded authority over the Jews in the past several generations. The Herods were essentially puppet kings who the Romans put in charge of Judea. There was Herod the Great who tried to kill baby Jesus. Then there was his son, Herod Antipas, who beheaded John the Baptist for speaking out about his illegitimate marriage. Next in line was Agrippa I who beheaded James, the son of Zebedee. Now, Paul is standing before Agrippa II, with no sign of fear, simply speaking the truth with clarity and boldness. In today's passage, governor Festus has accused Paul of insanity after hearing his full testimony, including his conversion on the road to Damascus. In response, Paul speaks directly to Agrippa, knowing that he was very familiar with the ways of the Jews. As Paul stands there in chains, he forcefully asks the king if he believes in the ways of the prophets. I kind of picture the king embarrassed in front of all his Roman/pagan friends, stammering, not quite knowing how to answer. So he asks Paul, "Do you think you can convince me to be a Christian in such a short time?" There must have been something about Agrippa that Paul knew he was curious and open. Maybe God told him to direct his questions to Agrippa. We can assume that throughout this whole trial, the Holy Spirit is directing Paul's words and actions. There is a purpose for each trial, for each giving of testimony, for each conversation, because in each setting, more and more people are exposed to the Gospel. What's interesting to me at the end of this chapter, Agrippa and Festus are talking and say that it's a shame that Paul has appealed to the emperor because he had done nothing wrong and they could release him. However, his appeal meant he would be heading to Rome to testify once more. What they don't understand is that this isn't simply about Paul's freedom, it's about carrying the Good News to people and places it had never been before. God's up to something more.
