The Commodity of Connection: Lessons from Betrayal and Loss

Send us a textThe parallels between grief and betrayal reveal profound truths about human resilience and our capacity for healing. Drawing inspiration from Molly Bice Jackson's powerful memoir "The Commodity of Connection," this episode explores how the emotional aftermath of betrayal mirrors other devastating life experiences, offering unexpected wisdom for those navigating post-betrayal trauma. When betrayal shatters our world into a million pieces, we often feel beyond repair. Yet within this devastation lies an opportunity for transformation – what Neal A. Maxwell beautifully describes as "the cavity carved by pain can one day become our receptacle for joy." This paradox forms the heart of betrayal recovery: our capacity to experience profound joy grows in direct proportion to our willingness to feel our deepest pain. The journey from devastation to healing involves recognizing the beauty in our scars rather than hiding them. These invisible wounds become not just reminders of our pain, but testaments to our survival. By acknowledging what has happened without judgment, processing difficult emotions instead of avoiding them, and learning to meet our own needs before others', we rebuild ourselves – not as we were before, but as something stronger and more authentic.Perhaps most significantly, we discover the life-saving power of connection. When forced to choose between authentic self-expression and maintaining relationships, humans instinctively sacrifice authenticity for connection. This explains why many remain in relationships that betray their core values and needs. True healing requires finding your "tribe" – people who understand your experience without judgment and create space for your authentic self to emerge.Ready to transform your betrayal experience into something meaningful? The Prophet Joseph Smith said the Doctrine and Covenants is “the foundation of the Church in these last days, and a benefit to the world, showing that the keys of the mysteries of the kingdom of our Savior are again entrusted to man.” In 2025, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints study the Doctrine and Covenants, to learn of Him, apply the stories found in its pages to their own lives and explore thematically the invitation the Lord gives to all to come unto Him.  In this episode of the Church News podcast, Church News reporter Mary Richards is joined by Rosalynde Welch, a research fellow and associate director at the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship at Brigham Young University. They explore the themes interwoven in this sacred book of scripture, from the role of prophets to the transformative power of repentance and agency.  The Church News Podcast is a weekly podcast that invites listeners to make a journey of connection with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints across the globe. Hosts Jon Ryan Jensen, editor of the Church News, and Church News reporter Mary Richards share unique views of the stories, events, and people who form this international faith. With each episode, listeners are asked to embark on a journey to learn from one another and ponder, “What do I know now?” because of the experience. Produced by KellieAnn Halvorsen.

Mack Wilberg). The Tabernacle Choir Life can be so unpredictable—joys and sorrows, beautiful blessings and distressing difficulties, can come unexpectedly. Our life's dreams and plans can change in an instant. We all know this to be true. So how can we find peace amid such turbulence? Horatio Spafford knew something about life's unexpected challenges. He was a successful attorney and real estate investor who lost a fortune in the great Chicago fire of 1871. Around the same time, his beloved four-year-old son died of scarlet fever. Thinking a vacation would do his family some good, he sent his wife and four daughters on a ship to England, planning to join them after he finished some pressing business at home. However, while crossing the Atlantic Ocean, the ship was involved in a terrible collision and sunk. More than 200 people lost their lives, including all four of Horatio Spafford's precious daughters. His wife, Anna, survived the tragedy. Upon arriving in England, she sent a telegram to her husband that began: “Saved alone. What shall I do?” Horatio immediately set sail for England. At one point during his voyage, the captain of the ship, aware of the tragedy that had struck the Spafford family, summoned Horatio to tell him that they were now passing over the spot where the shipwreck had occurred. As Horatio thought about his daughters, words of comfort and hope filled his heart and mind. He wrote them down, and they have since become a well-beloved hymn: When peace like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll— Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to know It is well, it is well with my soul. Perhaps we cannot always say that everything is well in all aspects of our lives. There will always be storms to face, and sometimes there will be tragedies. But with faith in a loving God and with trust in His divine help, we can confidently say, “It is well, it is well with my soul.”   Watch this video with subtitles at-  https://youtu.be/Eg5O2y1UXw4?si=JvgZ32hBe4iqMK3J   The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square 891K subscribers 5,209,607 views Aug 2, 2017 For the story behind this song:     • It Is Well with My Soul - The Spoken ...   The Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square perform Mack Wilberg's arrangement of "It Is Well with My Soul," by Philip P. I always keep a copy in my pocket, and I share it with people who are curious about our standards. It has been updated and refreshed to better cope with the challenges and temptations of our day. The new version of For the Strength of Youth is available online in 50 different languages and will also be available in print. It will be a significant help for making choices in your life. Please embrace it as your own and share it with your friends. This new version of For the Strength of Youth is subtitled A Guide for Making Choices. To be very clear, the best guide you can possibly have for making choices is Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the strength of youth. So the purpose of For the Strength of Youth is to point you to Him. It teaches you eternal truths of His restored gospel—truths about who you are, who He is, and what you can accomplish with His strength. It teaches you how to make righteous choices based on those eternal truths.13 It's also important to know what For the Strength of Youth does not do. It doesn't make decisions for you. It doesn't give you a “yes” or “no” about every choice you might ever face. For the Strength of Youth focuses on the foundation for your choices. It focuses on values, principles, and doctrine instead of every specific behavior. The Lord, through His prophets, has always been guiding us in that direction. He is pleading with us to “increase [our] spiritual capacity to receive revelation.”14 He is inviting us to “hear Him.”15 He is calling us to follow Him in higher and holier ways.16 And we are learning in a similar way every week in Come, Follow Me.   American Conservative University Podcast (ACU) is not an official representative for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. My friend Livia read a book about Neal A. Maxwell. In the book, they used the phrase 'peaceful intensity' to describe how he managed his busy life. It's a way of being that can be cultivated. It involves how we perceive what is happening in the moment. Maxwell said you can be busy but still function from a place of peace. As Livia and I talked I wondered, “How can those two words even go together?” I was intrigued by the idea and this unique phrase. This is becuase I've been experiencing this place of busy peace in the last few years. It happens when I have this thought, STOP and TURN. In other words, shift how you see what is happening. When I listen and follow the thought I manage better. Even if the pace doesn't slow down, my heart does. Imagine how life would be if this was our way of being most of the time. Join me as I share what I have learned about living a life of peaceful intensity. I share two real-life experiences that will leave you wanting to know more.

What would you say if you could write a letter to your family, loved ones, and friends right now, in whatever phase you are in? What advice would you give?  On three different occasions this week, as I have been running around, listening, and studying, I have run into just that.   One was titled “Insights from my Life" by Neal A Maxwell. One was in the Book of Mormon, chapter 7, Mormon is at the end of his life and makes a list. Another was in the Don't Miss This Scripture Study book  On each occasion, three seasoned people offered insights and various life lessons. I have thought about what I'd say, and this podcast would probably be way too long if I tried to fit them all in! But for today I just want to highlight ONE. Be Grateful. In today's podcast, we will talk about a little mishap I had this week.  I fell off my bathroom counter and boy has it wreaked havoc on my back, routine, and schedule! Today I share some thoughts that have been helpful for me to practice gratitude. They are: "It could have been so much worse." "Thank goodness for help." "I can still walk." "This might be a good thing." Listen in today as we discuss these and how we can all apply them in any situation or circumstance.  Insights From my Life a BYU Speech by Neal A. This week we go back in time and revisit Corrine's experience going through a divorce in her early 20s. We talk about how her life intersected with Neil's, what it was like for both of them during that time, and what helped Corrine survive. She shares tips on what her friends did to support her, some of the lessons she learned in retrospect, and what she would tell herself if she could give her younger self advice before going through all of this. Today we will discuss someone described as the "spiritual leader" of alleged murders Chad Daybell and Lori Vallow, alleged abuser Tim Ballard, and recently-imprisoned Jodi Hildebrandt. Thom Harrison is a prominent Utah therapist who published a book called "Visions of Glory" in 2012, focusing on three of his alleged near death experiences (including personal visitations from Jesus Christ). As has been uncovered over the past few years, Thom Harrison' and his book "Visions of Glory" have been highly influential across the Mormon "prepper" neo-fundamentalist community, and particularly in the lives and stories of Chad Daybell, Lori Vallow, Tim Ballard, Jodi Hildebrant, as well as other "preppers" such as Julie Rowe, Rod Meldrum, and alleged abuser-therapist Maurice Harker. Part of what has made Visions of Glory so successful is that Thom (through the pseudonym Spencer) claims in his book that his visions were approved of by an un-named Mormon apostle (who now is known to be the late Neal A. Maxwell). Finally, we will discuss how the Mormon church was made aware of Thom Harrison and his book in the 2012-2013 time period, and chose to promote Thom to bishop instead of to punish him and/or stop the publishing of his book. Lauren Matthias (Hidden True Crime Podcast), Megan Connor (Lori Vallow's cousin), and Mindy Caldwell (Mormon super-sluether) will be joining us for this panel discussion. These are they who fully intend, someday, to begin to believe and/or to be active in the Church. But not yet! These are not bad individuals, but good individuals who simply do not know how much better they could be. Such individuals often stay proximate to—but do not participate fully in—the Church. They will not come inside the chapel, but neither do they leave its porch. These are they who need and are needed by the Church, but who, in part, “live without God in the world.” Here is the link to Elder Maxwell's talk ➜ https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/s... #prophets #latterdaysaints #God ⛪ - Find a local Latter-day Saint Church to attend ➜ https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/m...

Maxwell. https://youtu.be/WuYtWvzGXmE BYU Speeches 149K subscribers 47,470 views Jun 11, 2021 Having patience with ourselves and our circumstances will bring us closer to God and increase our love, humility, and willingness to submit to Him. All rights reserved. "Thank you very much, Bob. I appreciate this great privilege each time that it is mine, my brothers and sisters. I am grateful to the choral group today for that last number, the lyrics of which I hope will linger with you somewhat, because I will turn to them as I close my speech. I have chosen to speak today about a very pedestrian principle: patience, I hope that I do not empty the Marriott Center by that selection. Perhaps the topic was selfishly selected because of my clear and continuing need to develop further this very important attribute. But my interest in patience is not solely personal; for the necessity of having this intriguing attribute is cited several times in the scriptures, including once by King Benjamin who, when clustering the attributes of sainthood, named patience as a charter member of that cluster (Mosiah 3:19; see also Alma 7:23). Patience is not indifference. Actually, it means caring very much but being willing, nevertheless, to submit to the Lord and to what the scriptures call the “process of time.” Patience is tied very closely to faith in our Heavenly Father. Actually, when we are unduly impatient we are suggesting that we know what is best—better than does God. Or, at least, we are asserting that our timetable is better than His. Either way we are questioning the reality of God's omniscience as if, as some seem to believe, God were on some sort of postdoctoral fellowship and were not quite in charge of everything. Saint Teresa of Avila said that unless we come to know the reality of God, including his omniscience, our mortal existence “will be no more than a night in a second-class hotel” (quoted by Malcolm Muggeridge in “The Great Liberal Death Wish,” Imprimis [Hillsdale College, Michigan], May 1979.) Our second estate can be a first-class experience only if you and I develop a patient faith in God and in his unfolding purposes. We read in Mosiah about how the Lord simultaneously tries the patience of His people even as He tries their faith (Mosiah 23:21). One is not only to endure, but to endure well and gracefully those things which the Lord “seeth fit to inflict upon [us]” (Mosiah 3:19), just as did a group of ancient American saints who were bearing unusual burdens but who submitted “cheerfully and with patience to all the will of the Lord” (Mosiah 24:15). Paul, speaking to the Hebrews, brings us up short by writing that, even after faithful disciples had “done the will of God,” they “[had] need of patience” (Hebrews 10:36). How many times have good individuals done the right thing only to break or wear away under subsequent stress, canceling out much of the value of what they had already so painstakingly done? Sometimes that which we are doing is correct enough but simply needs to be persisted in patiently, not for a minute or a moment but sometimes for years. Paul speaks of the marathon of life and of how we must “run with patience the race that is set before us” (Hebrews 12:1). Paul did not select the hundred-meter dash for his analogy! The Lord has twice said: “And seek the face of the Lord always, that in patience ye may possess your souls, and ye shall have eternal life” (D&C 101:38, emphasis added; see also Luke 21:19). Could it be, brothers and sisters, that only when our self-control becomes total do we come into the true possession of our souls? Patience is not only a companion of faith but is also a friend to free agency. Inside our impatience there is sometimes an ugly reality: We are plainly irritated and inconvenienced by the need to make allowance for the free agency of others. In our impatience—which is not the same thing as divine discontent—we would override others, even though it is obvious that our individual differences and preferences are so irretrievably enmeshed with each other that the only resolution which preserves free agency is our patience and longsuffering with each other. The passage of time is not, by itself, an automatic cure for bad choices; but often individuals like the prodigal son can “in process of time” come to their senses..."   Phil Wickham - This Is Amazing Grace (Official Music Video) Phil Wickham 974K subscribers 84,853,959 views Nov 13, 2013 Phil Wickham's official music video for 'This Is Amazing Grace'. "What could I have done more for my vineyard?" In one of the Book of Mormons most magisterial passages, the lord of a vineyard looks over his beloved olive trees with great sorrow and strives to redeem them. This allegory represents Jesus Christ s labor to save not only individual souls but an entire world. Perhaps more than any other Book of Mormon prophet, Jacob manifests the same divine anxiety, having been born in a wild wilderness and inheriting the task of uniting a divided people.  In Jacob: A Brief Theological Introduction (Neal A. Maxwell Institute, 2020), Deidre Nicole Green presents Jacob as a vulnerable and empathic religious leader deeply concerned about social justice. As a teacher consecrated by his brother Nephi, Jacob insists on continuity between religious and social life. His personal experiences of suffering, his compassion for those in society s margins, and his concern for equality are inseparable from his testimony of Jesus Christ. Because of Christ, Jacob lovingly and mournfully seeks to nurture a faithful and just community, even against all odds of success. For over 50 years, For the Strength of Youth has been a guide for generations of Latter-day Saint youth. Endorsed Charities -------------------------------------------------------- Pre-Born! Our mission is to bring relief to the poorest of the poor in the countries where we serve. We strive to reflect God's unconditional love. It's a sacrificial love that embraces all people regardless of race or religion. You will have the gift of seeing your service magnified. Give thanks while that gift is yours. You will appreciate its worth more than you can imagine when it is gone. The Lord will not only magnify the power of your efforts. He will work with you Himself.” (Henry B. Have you ever felt inspired to do something that went against the grain? That has been the story of my life! When my kids were young, my husband and I felt inspired to transform our parenting in a way that went against the grain of popular parenting practices in a big way. We got some significant backlash for doing so, but our why kept us pushing forward, despite the opposition. The result was transformative. All three of our kids who have launched into adulthood have, at separate times, thanked us for how we raised them. This experience taught me that I could trust the Lord to lead me to the answers that are right for my family, even if they go against the grain (and they often do!). Listen in to hear the story and my top three takeaways that relate to strengthening faith in Jesus Christ. **Are you ready to STAND and start putting your faith into ACTION so you can have greater access to God's power? More important than acquiring fame or fortune is being what God wants us to be. Before we came to this earth, we may have been fashioned to do some small good in this life that no one else can do. The Lord said to Jeremiah, “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations”  If God has a work for those with many talents, I believe he also has an important work for those of us who have few.”[1994–A:4, James E. It was in its precise orbit long before it so shone. We are likewise placed in human orbits to illuminate. Divine correlation functions not only in the cosmos but on this planet, too. A football field is not usually considered a place of love. But it was during his time playing for the NFL that Steve Young began to explore what he now calls the law of love. He realized that relationships based on the expectation of receiving something in return eventually rot, but when we bring long-suffering, gentleness, meekness, and love unfeigned to our relationships—that's when the magic happens. 2:29- What Is the Law of Love?  4:45- Steve Young: The Sunday School Teacher 8:17- An Undefeated Love on the Football Field 18:49- A Spirit of Abundance 26:00- Neal A. This week we study a moment for Israel that taught them powerful truths about themselves and the Lord. Although they were not wrongly imprisoned like Joseph Smith, they had a "miserable experience" because of their own actions that brought them to "mourn". In that mourning, and in our own, we can see and learn truths about our Lord that can help us grow, heal, and change.   Show Notes: Dieter F. Uchtdorf, "Continue in Patience," April 2010. Neal A. Episode 17Imperfect ProphetsLiving HonestlyBig 10Lesson 17“All That the Lord Hath Spoken We Will Do”#OldTestament2022 #comefollowme #comefollowme2022 #realtalkcomefollowmeFollow along as hosts Ganel-Lyn Condie and John Fossum discuss impactful topics from this week's Come, Follow Me lesson covering Exodus 18-20, including: Why we shouldn't expect prophets to be perfectCommunal vs. Personal CommandmentsThe 10 Commandments as “reality statements” and how to use trust as we strive to follow them. How following truth leads to happiness—----------------------------------------------------------------------------------Invitation: Take time to journal or ponder this week about these questions: Does your current lifestyle align with what you honestly believe is true? Do your daily habits and lifestyle choices increase or decrease your quality of life, your genuine feelings of peace and happiness, your connection to light and truth? —----------------------------------------------------------------------------------Quotes & Links: Link to Come, Follow Me Through the Old Testament Book:https://www.seagullbook.com/come-follow-me-through-the-old-testament.html Elder Maxwell Quote: “In a Kingdom where perfection is an eventual expectation, each other's needs for improvement have a way of being noticed. Perceptive Jethro had plenty of data to back up the crisp counsel he gave his son-in-law Moses. Even prophets notice their weaknesses. Nephi persisted in a major task “notwithstanding my weakness.”  Another Nephite prophet, Jacob, wrote candidly of his “over anxiety” for those with whom he was not certain he could communicate adequately. Our present prophet has met those telling moments when he has felt as if he could not meet a challenge. Yet he did.” [1976–O:12, Neal A. Maxwell, Notwithstanding My Weakness]David Bednar Quote, given while President of BYU Idaho: “It is one thing to obey the institutional, public, and shared commandments associated with the Lord's kingdom on earth—commandments such as the law of chastity, the law of tithing, and the Word of Wisdom; it is an even greater thing to receive and respond to the individual, private, and personally revealed commandments that result from continual and faithful obedience.”  [Pres. Bednar, https://www2.byui.edu/Speeches/Bednar_Jan2004.htm#:~:text=It%20is%20one%20thing%20to,private%2C%20and%20personally%20revealed%20commandments]Elder Nelson Quote: “Try as they might, no parliament or congress could ever repeal the law of earth's gravity or amend the Ten Commandments. Those laws are constant. All laws of nature and of God are part of the everlasting gospel. … Even though one's understanding of the truth may be fragmentary, truth itself does not change. Everlasting truth and wisdom come from the Lord. … From generation to generation, God has given additional light. Whether truth comes from a laboratory of science or directly by revelation, truth is embraced by the gospel.” (Elder Russell M. Nelson1993–O:33, Constancy Amid Change)Real Talk is presented by Seagull Book and hosted by Ganel-Lyn Condie and John Fossum.
