We live in an unforgiving age. Even as we know that Jesus commanded forgiveness, extending it can seem impossible, impractical, self-harming, even unjust. In these times of outrage and fear, what can help us become forgiving people?Author Amy Orr-Ewing joined us for a recent online conversation, where we explored these questions for a live audience:"The church needs to recapture the vision of forgiveness as an actuality. This is something real rooted in the sacrifice of Jesus at the cross. And it's that that has actually been the animating force of the Christian faith throughout history."This episode is drawn from an Online Conversation in 2026. In the 1950s, the phrase “women's liberation movement” had yet to be spoken or written. Yet, stewardess and union leader Dusty Roads were already challenging the status quo. She led the fight against American Airlines' discriminatory employment policies, which included firing stewardesses at age thirty-two, banning marriage, and enforcing humiliating girdle checks and weigh-ins. The airlines insisted that stewardesses remain perpetually young, single, and attractive to entice traveling businessmen to buy tickets. These policies were not just about image, they were also about economics, allowing airlines to save on benefits and avoid retirement payouts. Male stewards, notably, were not subject to these same rules.Outraged by this injustice, Dusty vowed to fight back. Although she had been hired before the new age policy and was “grand mothered” in—meaning she was exempt—she felt compelled to stand up for her younger colleagues because it was the right thing to do.In 1958, Dusty became one of the first female lobbyists in Washington, D.C. She became a visual and vocal presence, forging relationships with congressional representatives, senators, aides, and even vice presidents and presidents. Dusty helped draft a bill to overturn the age policy, but the all-male committee dismissed it as “The Old Broads Bill,” and it failed. That moment made her realize she was fighting not just the airline industry, but national gender discrimination.Dusty went on to become the most influential voice in her union. Her story embodies the courage and determination that helped pave the way for a more inclusive and equal society. https://elainerock.com/http://www.yourlotandparcel.org

Psychologists Off The Clock: A Psychology Podcast About The Science And Practice Of Living Well
Being absolutely sure you're right should settle an argument, but somehow, it often does the opposite. Instead, things escalate, tensions rise, and before you know it, the conflict has taken on a life of its own. For this episode, Yael welcomes New York Times bestselling author, trained mediator, and Good Conflict co-founder Amanda Ripley to unpack her book High Conflict: Why We Get Trapped, and How We Get Out, and the difference between “good conflict” that strengthens us and “high conflict” that feeds on contempt, disgust, and rigid us-versus-them thinking. You'll hear why high conflict makes us more error-prone while feeling more righteous, how group belonging and media incentives can keep the cycle going, and practical ways to interrupt the pattern like Gary Freeman's three-question pause before speaking. Listen to learn how to stay in the fight without losing nuance, curiosity, or yourself.Listen and Learn:The distinction between healthy conflict that helps you grow and the kind that quietly turns destructive in ways you may not notice Why conflicts can quietly take over our thinking, shifting us into an us-versus-them mindset Why do we get pulled into conflicts that drain us even when we know the cost, and what keeps us hooked? How can even people deeply engaged with information find themselves pulling away from conflict, and what does that reveal about the hidden dynamics of high conflictHow you can recognize the early signs of high conflict and shift toward more productive, healthier conversations before things escalateResources: High Conflict: Why We Get Trapped, and How We Get Out: https://bookshop.org/a/30734/9781982128579 Amanda's Website: https://www.amandaripley.com/Good Conflict Website: https://www.thegoodconflict.comConnect with Amanda on Social Media: https://www.facebook.com/amanda.ripley.35/https://www.instagram.com/ripleywriter/Amada's Substack: https://amandaripley.substack.com/ Amanda's article about high-conflict journalism, I stopped reading the news. Is the problem me–or the product?Yael's Substack post about how journalists quickly build connectionBuilders Movement: an Instagram feed and website that offers “inspiration, tools, and ways to take action to rise above us vs. them and solve our toughest problems together.”About Amanda Ripley: Amanda Ripley is a New York Times bestselling author, magazine journalist, and co-founder of Good Conflict, a media and training company helping people reimagine how we fight. She has written three award-winning nonfiction books — The Unthinkable, The Smartest Kids in the World, and High Conflict — each following people through transformations to uncover what the rest of us can learn. Her most recent book, High Conflict, chronicles how good conflict metastasizes into something that consumes everything in its path — and, crucially, how people find their way out. A trained mediator herself, Amanda's work reveals that escape from high conflict isn't about being nicer; it's about learning to genuinely comprehend what you still disagree with. Clay opens the show with a fiery victory lap: While liberals, RINOs, and “panickins” were melting down and demanding the 25th Amendment because Trump tweeted tough on Iran, he delivered results — forcing a ceasefire, keeping the Strait of Hormuz open, and stabilizing oil prices without firing a single American shot. Clay mocks the same deranged voices who spent days screaming that Trump was about to start World War III, only to watch Iran bend the knee. He calls out their hypocrisy: they'd rather drag America into another endless war than admit Trump's approach actually worked. Raw, unfiltered, and zero apologies — exactly how a Clay Edwards opening should sound.

If you've ever ended an argument with your partner, coworker, or family member feeling confused about how it escalated so quickly, this episode is for you. Julia Minson, founder of the Constructive Disagreement Lab and author of How to Disagree Better, explains to us why trying to “win” arguments often starts fights and offers a different metric for success: a disagreement that increases both people's willingness to talk again. Drawing on her work on naive realism and research on receptiveness, she discusses why differences feel threatening, how listening is hard to perceive in conflict, and how language can signal receptivity using the HEAR framework. Listen in to learn evidence-based tools to make hard conversations in your life more constructive.Listen and Learn: Julia's upbringing in a family of psychologists, her immigrant experience, and her years as a ballroom dancer, and why people can share the same moment yet see it completely differently, making disagreement inevitableWhy a truly constructive disagreement isn't about “winning” or changing minds, but about improving mutual willingness to continue the conversation and deepening understandingNaive realism and the tendency to assume our perceptions are objectively correct, which underlies everyday conflicts, because everyone thinks “I get it” and struggles to see others' perspectivesHow true receptiveness works, not just thinking receptively, but expressing it clearly through language so others genuinely feel heard, especially in conflict or disagreementHow to use the HEAR framework to communicate receptively and build stronger relationshipsJulia's Hawk story and how approaching disagreements with curiosity rather than judgment can turn tense or potentially divisive moments into understanding, connection, and even common groundResources: How to Disagree Better: https://bookshop.org/a/30734/9780593855003Julia's Websites: https://disagreeingbetter.com/ and https://www.juliaminson.com/ Connect with Julia on Social Media: https://www.linkedin.com/in/julia-minson-5b511b150/https://twitter.com/juliaminson Take The Measure of Receptivity:https://receptiveness.net/survey.html About Julia Minson: Julia Minson is a professor of public policy at Harvard Kennedy School and founder of the Constructive Disagreement Lab, where she studies what she calls the "psychology of disagreement" — how we actually engage with views that conflict with our own, especially on the hot-button stuff: politics, values, health decisions. Her new book, How to Disagree Better, starts from a counterintuitive premise: we're drowning in advice on how to win arguments, but Julia's research shows that trying to win is basically a guaranteed way to start a fight. Her work offers evidence-based strategies for being genuinely receptive to opposing views, which turns out to be far more effective than perfecting your persuasion game.Related Episodes:276. Right, let's talk about the National Party accidentally letting slip that they're selling tables at a dinner with Christopher Luxon. The story is that the Mainland Dinner will be held in Christchurch next month and if you have a few thousand dollars spare, you can go along. Dinner at Chris Luxon's table will cost you $10,000. Dinner at a minister's table - a senior minister's table - will cost you $8000. And then just a dinner with, you know, normal punters, normal civilians, will cost you $5000. Now, we only know about this because Maureen Pugh shared a copy of the invitation on Facebook - not her first mistake. Newstalk ZB saw it, then it was deleted, but by then it was too late, and cue the outrage. Now, I'm not outraged by this at all, because this has been going on since at least John Key's time. Jacinda did it as well and I don't think it's any different from every other example we have in our democracy of cash for access. This is how power has always worked. If you have money, you get access to people in power. Money for lobbyists, who then secure you meetings with ministers. Money for donations that mean candidates make time for you. Money for tables at the Mainland Dinner. In fact - and this is my personal opinion - I quite enjoy reading about these dinners because they give me a real-time market valuation of a political leader. Luxon is selling his table for $10,000 in 2026. Four years ago, in 2022, he was selling it for $15,000. So he's running at a discount at the moment, isn't he? Jacinda was selling tickets to a conference where ticket-holders could have access to her for $1800. That was five years ago. So she was more valuable at $1800 in 2021 than Luxon is right now - or than he was a year later - if you break it down and look at the cost a seat. John Key - now, if you want to hear about a baller - sold a table at a dinner for $100,000. That's real market political valuation, isn't it? Now, this is why I think this is valuable. It tells us how much voters and stakeholders: A) like various leaders, B) want to be seen with them, and - C) rate the chances of those leaders being elected and therefore being useful. So make of that what you will when you look at the numbers. But if you are outraged by this, you're going to be outraged forever because cash for access will probably never change.

Outraged by the Christmas bombings of Hanoi in 1972 by the USA during the Vietnam War, the Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme made a critical speech.
