The last quarter of the Book of Alma focuses on a series of conflicts between Nephites and Lamanites.  Amalickiah and Ammaron, with other dissenters, act as the catalysts of a long battle. Captain Moroni, Helaman, the stripling warriors, and others respond to help the Nephites survive and restore peace. Why are these battles in the Book of Mormon? How do they fit into the larger context of the Book of Alma, and what do we learn from them? In this episode, BYU professors Joseph Spencer, Ross Baron, Joshua Matson, and Robbie Taggart explore these questions in an inspiring scripture conversation.

In Alma chapter 43, we are thrust back into the heart of the Nephite-Lamanite conflict after Alma's poignant instructions to his sons. Outraged by the Nephites' sheltering of Zoramite converts, the Zoramites and Lamanites plot a massive attack on Jershon. The pacifist Ammonite converts are moved to Melech, while Alma, his sons, and other missionaries rally the Nephite spirits for the impending war. The Lamanites, led by Zarahemna, face a well-prepared Nephite army under the new, young leader, Moroni. The Nephites, fortified with breastplates and shields, outmaneuver the Lamanite forces, leading to a strategic victory. Moroni's brilliant tactics and the Nephites' spiritual resolve shine through in this gripping chapter, as they defend their liberty, families, and faith against overwhelming odds. As the chapter unfolds, we witness the intensity of the conflict and the Nephites' unwavering commitment to their cause. The chapter concludes with the Nephites rejoicing in their deliverance, a testament to their faith and unity in the face of adversity.

He knew the pains of war and the power of studying the people who manage to stay valiant in it. This week, we'll study the efforts of men like Captain Moroni and Helaman as they push back against the violent strategies of men like Zerahemnah, Amalickiah, and Ammoron. Studying their strategies and the Lord's patterns of deliverance will help equip us for the battles of our day.Questions to Consider:Alma 44:17 | When is anger justified? How does Moroni channel it constructively? Are there stories in the Savior's life that help you understand how to control this emotion rather than be controlled by it?Alma 49:6-9 | Why do you think the Lord works in “curious” ways to conquer physical and spiritual enemies? Does this story teach you anything impactful about the Restoration?Alma 47:7-18 | What important differences do you see between the story of Nehemiah rebuilding the wall and Lehonti coming down from his stronghold? August 12-18 You may get to the so-called war chapters in the Book of Mormon and wonder why Mormon bothered to include so many of them. Yet, he was a prophet who'd seen our day and if ever there were chapters as fresh and relevant as today's news headlines, here they are. They are filled with the best heroes, like Moroni, who hoist the title of liberty, the darkest villains, like Amalickiah who prosper by deceit and betrayal, and underscoring it all is an existential question: what is the price of freedom?

Welcome brothers and sisters to Mormon Movie Reviews: Where LDS movie lovers belong! I am your humble host, Dives EP 77 - Passage to Zarahemla (2007) Running time: 1hr 35min Rating: pg 13 Genre: Adventure/Drama This review works best if you have seen this film before, though that is not required. Synopsis Passage to Zarahemla" is a 2003 fantasy adventure film directed by Chris Heimerdinger. The story revolves around two teenagers, Chris and Clay, who find themselves unexpectedly transported back in time to ancient America, where they encounter the Nephites and Lamanites, two warring factions from the Book of Mormon. The film begins with Chris, a troubled teenager struggling with the recent loss of his parents, and Clay, his rebellious younger brother. After an argument with their foster parents, the brothers run away from home and embark on a journey that leads them to an unexpected portal in the woods. Upon entering the portal, they find themselves in the ancient land of Zarahemla. In Zarahemla, Chris and Clay are separated, each encountering different groups of people. Chris meets a kind-hearted Nephite girl named Zarahemla, while Clay is captured by the Lamanites, the enemies of the Nephites. As Chris and Zarahemla embark on a quest to rescue Clay and find a way back home, they must navigate the dangers of the ancient world and confront their own inner demons. Throughout their journey, Chris and Zarahemla learn important lessons about courage, friendship, and faith. They discover the power of forgiveness and redemption as they strive to overcome the challenges they face. Along the way, they encounter various characters from the Book of Mormon, including the righteous prophet Alma and the villainous Amalickiah. As the film reaches its climax, Chris and Zarahemla must confront Amalickiah and his army in a final showdown to save Clay and return home. With the help of their newfound allies, they are able to defeat Amalickiah and find their way back to the present day. "Passage to Zarahemla" is a heartwarming tale that combines elements of fantasy, adventure, and spirituality. While the film's low budget is evident in its production values, the storyline and lame performances from the cast add to its shortcomings. The film laughably brings the world of the Book of Mormon to life, offering viewers a glimpse into the ancient civilization of the Nephites and Lamanites. Overall, "Passage to Zarahemla" is an uplifting and but not at all entertaining film that is sure to resonate with audiences of all ages. While it may not have the polish of a big-budget Hollywood production, its heartfelt message and engaging storyline make it a worthwhile watch for anyone looking for a howlingly bad cinematic experience. Truly terrible film. Absolutely nothing redeemable. They ought to put a warning on movies like this. When it comes to the passage of Zarahemla, I'd like to put the DVD into the time portal near Leeds Utah so that no one ever watches it again. Lehi, Nephi, Amalickiah, Korihor—These are just a few of the many names readers encounter in the Book of Mormon. Just where did these names come from? Research has shown that individuals have certain naming preferences.  If Joseph Smith were making up the Book of Mormon, would its names reflect natural naming preferences and patterns? In this Episode, professor Brad Wilcox takes us into his decade of research on this subject and its fascinating findings. This is a story about a man named Pahoran. He was the President of the Nephites and he lived in a big white house where he ran the affairs of the entire Nephite kingdom. He was the one who put Moroni in charge of the army. He liked Moroni. And he trusted Moroni. But when Moroni came to him and told him that they needed to chase Amalickiah out, Pahoron did not know what to do. On one hand, Amalickiah's ideas were dangerous. But on the other hand, kicking out Amalickiah would not necessarily get rid of his bad ideas. Because ideas are like gum. Someone you hardly know might spit it out on the ground, and you might step on it, and that gum will stick to your shoe for years to come. But, Pahoran chose to trust Moroni because Moroni was smart. And more importantly, because Moroni was good. And so Pahoran gave his permission to drive Amalickiah out of the land. And you know what happened after that? Listen on for the full story.

Small acts can lead to such great consequences. Regardless of position or situation, no one can safely assume immunity to contention’s terrible toll. “Thomas B. Marsh, once one of the Twelve [Apostles], left the Church…. After an absence from the Church of nearly nineteen years, he came back. To a congregation of Saints, he then said: “‘If there are any among this people who should ever apostatize and do as I have done, prepare your backs for a good whipping, if you are such as the Lord loves. But if you will take my advice, you will stand by the authorities’”

We consider how the role of spiritual preparation was just as pivotal in these war chapters and we reflect on the lessons learnt from Amalickiah's influence.  Lynn D Wardle: “In Moroni’s day it was not merely the secular authorities (generals and chief judges) who established the peace. The high priest of the church, Helaman, worked closely with Moroni to quell dissent. Before the lengthy Nephite-Lamanite wars began, he tried to set the church in order because the dissensions that soon were to plague the nation were evident in the church. Just as Moroni, the great general, prayed and preached powerfully, Helaman, the great prophet, took up the sword and led an army (the 2000 stripling warriors). The establishment of peace did not merely mean that the Lamanites were defeated, but also that the gospel was widely preached.”

Alma 43-52 Synopsis:We are now getting into the WAR CHAPTERS! These chapters might look like the screenplay for the next big Hollywood blockbuster, but there are great spiritual lessons in them for our lives today...(43) Alma and his sons preach the gospel, while the Zoramites and other dissenters become Lamanites. To defend the Nephites against the Lamanites in battle, Captain Moroni prepared his people with armor and fortifications, while the Lamanites were equipped with offensive weapons but no shields or armor. His efforts teach us how we can find safety in the spiritual battles we face today. (44) Moroni commands the Lamanites to make a covenant of peace or be destroyed. Zarahemna rejects the offer, tries to attack Moroni and gets scalped! (45) Alma prophesies the destruction of Jerusalem and dissention grows within the church. (46) Amalickiah conspires to be king and brings his forces against the Nephites. Captain Moroni raises the “Title of Liberty”; written upon it are the words “In memory of our God, our religion, and freedom, and our peace, our wives, and our children”. (47) Amalickiah uses treachery and murder to become the king of the Lamanites. (48) Amalickiah then incites the Lamanites against the Nephites, but Moroni proves himself to be a great leader and a great soldier once again! (49) The invading Lamanites attempt to take the Nephite cities of Ammonihah and Noah, but fail. (50) Yet more wars, and destructions befall the Nephites in the days of their wickedness and abominations. Morianton and his army of dissenters is defeated by Teancum. Nephihah dies, and his son Pahoran fills the judgment seat. (52) The ‘king-men’ seek to change the law and set up a king. Pahoran and the freemen are supported by the voice of the people, while Teancum repels the Lamanite invasion and slays Amalickiah. (53) Ammoran succeeds Amalickiah as king of the Lamanites. Captain Moroni, Teancum, and Lehi lead the Nephites in a victorious war against the Lamanites; many of them surrender to the Nephite armies, and the city of Mulek is retaken.

August 3-9 You may get to the so-called war chapters in the Book of Mormon and wonder why Mormon bothered to include so many of them. Yet, he was a prophet who’d seen our day and if ever there were chapters as fresh and relevant as today’s news headlines, here they are. They are filled with the best heroes, like Moroni, who hoist the title of liberty, the darkest villains, like Amalickiah who prosper by deceit and betrayal, and underscoring it all is an existential question: what is the price of freedom?
