A Letter From Leigh: The Ghandi quote, "Be the change you'd like to see in the world" is a quote that not only resonates deeply with me, but one that has guided my practice and professionalism for as long as I can remember. I have always had the heart for teaching and knew that message of change would unfold through my love of learning, growing, and supporting youth.  I have been very fortunate in my life to get paid for work that fills my soul, and I feel very thankful to have the opportunity to work with and support our amazing scholars as they rise into their independence and adulthood. Today, I am not only am a teacher, I am an active advocate of social change, especially around supporting growth in how we teach and support our scholars with disabilities. Simply put...we all deserve a right to an equal education that meets us where we are. We all deserve an opportunity for employment that doesn't pay below minimum wage and matches our skillsets. We all deserve to be treated with respect and dignity regardless of our abilities. My hope for our community is to continue to challenge the stereotypes and boxes put on people with disabilities and instead promote inclusion and acceptance of all ability levels.  Be that change my friends! Spread acceptance! Spread love! Spread awareness!  -L Podcast Music: https://www.bensound.com/royalty-free-music (https://www.bensound.com/royalty-free-music)

Grit:  Angela Duckworth (Book- Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance) The secret to outstanding achievement is not talent but grit: a special blend of passion and persistence.      Grit is about having passion and perseverance for long-term goals. Gritty people are able to maintain their determination and motivation over long periods despite experiences with failure and adversity. The Five Big Ideas Grit is about holding the same top-level goal for a very long time. (A top-level goal is your ultimate concern, a compass that gives direction and meaning to all the goals below it.) Paragons of grit have four psychological assets: (1) interest (2) practice (3) purpose (4) hope. Gritty people do more deliberate practice and experience more flow. For paragons of grit, the long days and evenings of toil, the setbacks and disappointments, and struggle, the sacrifice—all this is worth it because, ultimately, their efforts pay dividends to other people. Often, the critical gritty-or-not decisions we make are a matter of identity more than anything else. Podcast Music: https://www.bensound.com/royalty-free-music

Topics: The importance of race and ethnic studies as a call to action right now with this global racism conversation. How does educating ourselves help the issues being raised in our society right now?  Media Influence?  The importance of understanding terminology (White Privilege, Defund the Police, anti-racist vs non-racist)? Walls we would break down? acknowledgments we would make? Ground Rules: Do your best, Be compassionate, Be Curious & Open Minded, Be engaged, Listen to each other Moment of Recognition Show Notes: Courage is very much involved in doing anti-racism work “Get comfortable being uncomfortable.” Bias/Implicit (Check your bias, our responsibility) Bias is built over time, research suggests that at a very young age we begin to form it. unknowing, we aren't entirely responsible for it, We are responsible for addressing our bias (Part of unpacking privilege)  We can't necessarily control the first thought that comes to our head, but we can control the second, and we can control our actions and how we react to things. "I have black friends." “The work of anti-racism is the work of becoming a better human to other humans.”  “Will you protect your own ego, or will you work to protect other people?” Ibram X. Kendi- Book: "Stamped From the Beginning" (National Book Award) & “How To Be an Anti-Racist” & Bias/Defensive Anti-Racism Shame shouldn't be a tool for anti-racism. Think through both the short term and long term needs. Ask for input from a variety of sources. Five Points on Perspective (Psychology Today- David W. Johnson):  We all have a unique perspective, no two people will see a situation or issue exactly the same.  A person's perspective is often experienced based, people tend to see only what their perspective allows them to see. (To change someone's perspective you would change the way that person interprets the events in his or her life). People's perspective can change over time. As your job role, experiences, assumptions, physiological states, and values change, your perspective will change. (i.e. hungry- see food). One message can mean two entirely different things from two entirely different perspectives. (two interpretations)  Misunderstandings often occur because we make assumptions that others see things from the same perspective as we do (everyone loves dogs).  The “Being” Lens  Who am I? Your why? Where am I? Where can I make an impact? Whose am I? Who am I working for? Moment of Gratitude- “Who or what in your life is worthy of some recognition?”
