The casual wine drinker may not appreciate the amount of science that is involved in making wine these days. This is why I have decided to focus this episode on the science of wine and winemaking. Winemaking has become so scientific that winemakers are required to be well versed in aspects of chemistry and biology. This is one of the reasons UC Davis' Viticulture and Enology program is so popular among wine professionals. UC Davis is known for its cutting-edge research in these subjects, so it attracts people from all over the world. This week's guest, Benjamin Eyer, graduated from the University of Pittsburg with a master's degree in Organic Chemistry. Instead of going to medical school, he decided to follow his passion for wine. Benjamin started his wine career by getting his Winemaking Certificate from UC Davis and traveling to Chile to learn how to work in a winery. Then Benjamin joined Frank Family Vineyards in Napa, CA as an intern before moving to the pacific northwest. In Oregon, Benjamin joined Trisaetum Winery and A to Z Wineworks as an intern to further his experience and grow as a winemaker. Finally, Benjamin was named winemaker at Landlines Estates where he made wine for over four years before moving on to Montinore Vineyards in Forest Grove, Oregon. After making wines for over eight years, Benjamin decided to make a career change and joined Admeo Inc. in Beaverton Oregon. Admeo Inc. provides wine testing kits and machines that wineries use to analyze their wines starting when the grapes first arrive at the winery after harvest and all the way through fermentation and bottling. These machines allow the wineries who can afford them, to test their wine samples much more efficiently and accurately which allows them to get the results of the analysis much quicker. In this episode, Benjamin and I discuss his wine journey that brought him to Admeo Inc, some tests that winemakers do to fermenting juice and why, and we discuss some wines he is especially proud of making when he was at Montinore Vineyards in Oregon.

Your host for this podcast is Doug Utberg, the founder and principal consultant for Business of Life, LLC. Doug: Welcome to the terminal value podcast. I have Sister Adelle Marie with me from the Sisters of Saint Mary. The campus in Beaverton Oregon which incidentally is where both of my kids go to school. My daughter Jada and my son Nolan. I won't say their ages but if you know me you probably know how old they are. They are both enrolled at the Sisters of Saint Mary's school. However, there are also some other ministries that go on as there as well which is they have a convent which is where Sister Adelle Marie lives with. Was it 49 other nuns? Sister Adelle: Approximately yes. Doug: Approximately yes. There's 42 there are 49 other nuns and they also run a senior care home called Maryville. In addition to having housing for retired clergy and Sister Adelle Marie she is actually the financial director. So she has quite a bit on her plate and she's graciously decided to come and talk to us just about the mission and the and then the resiliency they've shown in trying to figure out how to adapt to the covid reality and it's actually very timely conversation because as of the time of this recording the governor of the state of Oregon put a new set of restrictions on reopening schools. So you know, they the sisters are saying all right well that's okay we didn't want to celebrate Christmas anyway. We're just gonna be in meetings all the time. So Sister Adelle please welcome and yeah please tell us a little bit about your ministry over at the campus. Sister Adelle: Certainly. So I am what we call my role is called the President of the Sisters of Saint Mary of Oregon Ministries Corporation and as noted we have several ministries on our campus. The school was founded clear back in the early 1900s we were known then as Saint Mary's and then it changed the St. Mary's Institute and then it became at some point in the line Saint Mary of The Valley Academy and then changed to Valley Catholic. So Valley Catholic school on our campus actually serves babies as young as six to eight weeks all the way up through our seniors in high School and we have about a thousand students on our campus. So usually, usually they're all on our campus right now they've been doing digital learning as was noted. Then we have Maryville Nursing facility. It has residents up to a capacity of 165 residents there and then another 15 in our memory care unit as well. Doug: That's quite a bit of capacity. Sister Adelle: Exactly. So right there at Maryville, we have you know another 100 up to about 180, 81 residents that can be served on campus and as with our mother house is there. We are about 50 sisters living in the mother house. We have a few small houses on the campus also where some...

How has the COVID Pandemic changed your direction, path (This is where your true entrepreneurship has shined) What is your dream for PLAY.FIT.FUN? Grit: Angela Duckworth (Book- Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance) The secret to outstanding achievement is not talent but grit: a special blend of passion and persistence. Grit is about having passion and perseverance for long-term goals. Gritty people are able to maintain their determination and motivation over long periods despite experiences with failure and adversity. The Five Big Ideas Grit is about holding the same top-level goal for a very long time. (A top-level goal is your ultimate concern, a compass that gives direction and meaning to all the goals below it.) Paragons of grit have four psychological assets: (1) interest (2) practice (3) purpose (4) hope. Gritty people do more deliberate practice and experience more flow. For paragons of grit, the long days and evenings of toil, the setbacks and disappointments, and struggle, the sacrifice—all this is worth it because, ultimately, their efforts pay dividends to other people. Often, the critical gritty-or-not decisions we make are a matter of identity more than anything else. Podcast Music: https://www.bensound.com/royalty-free-music

Would you rather randomly time travel +/- 20 years every time you fart or teleport to a different place on earth (on land, not water) every time you sneeze? Would you rather only be to use a fork (no spoon) or only be able to use a spoon (no fork)? Lose the ability to read or the ability to speak? Tell us a little bit about yourself and your journey to being an amazing educator and school leader? Perspective- gaining understanding about how this world works (humility required) Perspective enables us all to see and understand what must happen in order to reach goals As a boss, vision and focus is one of the greatest things you can give the people that work with you (you team). Ego- (Rick Rigsby)- EGO IS THE ANESTHESIA THAT DEADENS THE PAIN OF STUPIDITY 3 ways to develop perspective (Habitudes- Tim Elmore) Take time to fully understand the full picture of your current reality in a situation so you can manage by fact. Think through both the short term and long term needs. Ask for input from a variety of sources. Five Points on Perspective (Psychology Today- David W. Johnson): We all have a unique perspective, no two people will see a situation or issue exactly the same. A person's perspective is often experienced based, people tend to see only what their perspective allows them to see. (To change someone's perspective you would change the way that person interprets the events in his or her life). People's perspective can change over time. As your job role, experiences, assumptions, physiological states, and values change, your perspective will change. (i.e. hungry- see food). One message can mean two entirely different things from two entirely different perspectives. (two interpretations) Misunderstandings often occur because we make assumptions that others see things from the same perspective as we do (everyone loves dogs). The “Being” Lens Who am I? Your why? Where am I? Where can I make an impact? Whose am I? Who am I working for? Moment of Gratitude- “Who or what in your life is worthy of some recognition?”
