When it comes to supplements, knowledge seems a bit all over the place. Should we take them or should we not? If we do, which ones should we take? After all, the shelves contain hundreds, each that are supposed to help with different things. Most importantly, how do we know how to supplement responsibly and where can we go wrong when it comes to these convenient micronutrient pills? To answer all these questions I have brought on trained orthopedic surgeon and health optimization professional Dr. Doug Lucas to find out. Supplements really can be a critical component of meeting our nutrient needs, so they are worth learning about! To follow Dr. Doug on social media check out Instagram @optimal_human_health/ and at his personal website: optimalhumanhealth.com/. When we think about working out we usually imagine pumping iron at the gym. This may seem... intimidating for anyone who doesn't see themselves as "that gym person" or maybe there is just not enough time in the day to commute or money in the bank to afford a membership. These days, it is easier than ever to workout in your comfort zone, even if it means exercising in your own living room. The online fitness industry is booming especially post COVID, and there are options for almost any kind of workout you can think of. Whether it be on Youtube or with a personal trainer, these options are excellent for getting in your daily, much-needed exercise. My guest today is Silvia Cassi, an online fitness trainer who lives in Milano, Italy. I have been attending her classes online and in person, and she provides us with her experiences transitioning to online fitness during COVID and about all the clients she has helped during the process! It is time to cover a deep and often intimidating topic when it comes to dieting. I have brought on Athina Crilley to talk about eating disorders - They are a significant problem in today's society so what are they and how do they develop? How should we think about eating disorders and what is the way to recovery once one develops? Athina shares her own personal experience of living for nearly 8 years with anorexia, and we get really deep into the topic. You do not want to miss this exclusive interview! Even if you have never been diagnosed with an eating disorder, it is critical to recognize how mindsets around eating and exercise and negative feedback loops can actually build damaging behaviours and it is important for supporting anyone around you who may be experiencing or has experienced an eating disorder at some point in life.Check out this episode and all my others here on ACast or wherever you're streaming. Welcome to Is This Actually Healthy, the show where we cover simple, practical topics for how to improve your eating and fitness lifestyle that you can easily take with you into the real world! It is an unfortunate fact that bringing home healthy ingredients in a grocery bag doesn't magically transform them into a delectable meal! We need to be proactive and learn to make meals that make us feel good but that we actually enjoy too. In this episode, I talk about how to avoid creativity burnout - that is, losing motivation to make healthier meals because you simply don't know what to do. Whether you are just starting to experiment with enhancing your cooking or if you're just bored with what you're eating on a daily basis now, it is time to consider the amazing range of inspirational resources we have to break the mold, including cookbooks, social media, YouTube, and more. I also provide you some tips on how to use these tools effectively. Check out this episode and all my others here on ACast: https://shows.acast.com/62a071b67106200012b66012. Being active does not necessarily mean "doing a workout". There are all kinds of things you can do during your day that can boost your activity levels, and some of them are healthy habits that only take a few minutes. By talking through my average work day and the habits I've built within it, I hope to give you some ideas on what you can squeeze into your day, no matter what your schedule looks like. The term "plant-based" may automatically make you think "vegan food". However, the market for plant-based products is rising exponentially as people from all kinds of backgrounds, nationalities, and dietary preferences are jumping on the bandwagon- and not just vegans. One attractive trait for these foods is that they are often healthier alternatives to their meat or dairy counterparts, so why not try to add more veggie-based products to our diets that are absolutely delicious? Today I am talking with Kory Zelickson who is the creator of oshopvejii.com: an online Amazon-like platform where you can shop for vegan products and get them shipped straight to your door! We talk about what plant-based products are, how they are taking shape in today's supermarkets and online shopping platforms, and why to consider them as a part of your diet. For this episode, I am doing something a bit different. I have read a fascinating book recently, written by Dr. Robert Davis, who you may remember from episodes 17-18 of this show when we discussed the book Supersized Lies. Robert Davis is an accredited health journalist who takes on the challenge of busting nutritional myths, and his book Coffee is Good for You is another must-read! I devoured the book and had so many thoughts to share that I dedicated a whole episode to it. You may be surprised by what the science shows. I know I was, so you won't want to miss it! We may not realize it, but eating is not just an activity - it is a series of behaviours that stems from our perceptions, emotions, and personalities. It really is like its own branch of psychology, and without training ourselves to have the right mindset, it's hard to be mentally self-aware of our everyday choices. Today I am talking with Brooke Simonson of the Health Investment to see how we can best wrangle control over our minds when it comes to our own wellbeing. Do you ever feel like one of the reasons holding you back from making new changes in your life is you're afraid other people will think you're "picky" or "difficult"? I have totally been there, and it inspired me to do a special episode all about why we need support from people in our inner circles and where to find it. In a society where we eat and do what we want without thinking of the long-term consequences, a big part of the nutrition/health industry is fixing life-style diseases after they have already developed. So many efforts going to treating diseases like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and gut problems, but where is the focus on making preventative lifestyle choices to eliminate the risks of these problems before they develop? Eating out on a daily basis can definitely put your nutritional goals at risk. Not only do you have little control over food you order out (hello processed ingredients and preservatives!), but it can be worse if you think you're ordering something healthy and it actually isn't as great as you thought! It's time to discuss how health halos around certain restaurants delude us into thinking we're making healthier choices. Starting in the late 1950s, fats became the enemy to weight loss, and the low-fat fad began. Yet in recent years, we now see a swing in the opposite direction, and now experts argue that diets relying almost solely on fat (like keto) are actually the best way to LOSE weight. So do we need no fat or a lot of it? Although they are the most calorie-dense of all the macronutrients, we still need them and need to learn the best strategies for how to obtain the good fats while cutting the bad ones. Last episode, we talked about how much protein you should aim to get, but the more important thing is learning what you should eat to make it happen. Protein is absolutely fundamental to losing weight and changing body composition, and the best news it doesn't just come from meat these days. I'm a vegan and I still get loads of protein by strategizing high-protein plant-based foods in my diet. This comes to show anyone is capable of doing it and getting the right results either on the scale or at the gym! I have heard countless times from others who are proposing starting a diet, say they simply have to cut the carbs to get results. They, and so many others, believe that by simply cutting out one macronutrient group that their weight problems will melt away like magic. However, carbohydrates are the most important source our bodies use for energy. We DO need them, yet why is it strictly believed that carbs make you fat? Let's discuss some of these common misconceptions! Check out this episode and all my others here: https://is-this-actually-healthy.onpodium.com/. Some people believe that in order to lose weight, it's a healthy idea to skip meals to reduce calories. This is a pretty drastic measure and can actually be counterproductive and unhealthy for your body. However, some people eat 5-6 times a day and it works for them! With lots of buzz talk in the nutrition world about nutrient timing, does it really make a difference how many times a day you eat? I'll talk about what works for me and how this is actually tied into food psychology and eating behaviours. In this episode, I discuss all you need to know to read a food label. I go into the rows on the food label that should pop out to you, the red flags you might find on a label, and the importance of actually examining the ingredients. Yes, ingredient order matters! We all know we need to eat healthier, but do you actually know where to begin or what questions you need to ask? You have the power to be your own nutritional consultant, and my goal is to help you along the way! I am your host, Julianna, and although I do not have a doctorate in nutrition, I am a passionate enthusiast who has done the research. I have been amazed by what I accomplished when I changed my health habits and what I learned along the way, and I feel like this knowledge should be accessible to everyone, no matter if you're trying to lose weight, transform your body, or even just pick up some new habits to make you feel better during the day. This knowledge is for everyone, and I am so thrilled to make this show possible so we can dissect some of the most fundamental and exciting aspects of nutrition you absolutely need! You can also find this show also on YouTube. Please contact me at Is.this.actually.healthy@gmail.com if you have any comments or ideas for future episodes.
