This interview is so jam-packed with wisdom, it's hard to know where to even start with the synopsis. Fred Lynch is a preacher, a church planter, an author, and a former Christian rapper, just to name a few. He felt the call of God on his life at a young age, and has since followed wherever God was leading. Today, he shares with us his passion for real relationship with God and others, and addresses the current tensions around race and the Church's place in that struggle. He is encouraging, inspiring, and challenging in all the right ways; we promise that this conversation will be a blessing to you, wherever you are.
Often when we hear the word worship, we quickly narrow its definition to the music that happens during a church service. But even though he's a worship leader, George Williamson knows that it's so much more than that. It's a discipline. An attitude. A way of life. These are the lessons he hopes to instill as Director of Worship Ministries at Point Loma Nazarene University. The creativity and passion he brings to this conversation will be an inspiration to all who hear it!
It can be awkward and difficult to broach the subject of drugs and alcohol with your kids or someone that might have a problem. Thankfully, Ray Lozano is here to help. Ray has been speaking about the dangers of substance abuse for over thirty years. His curiosity and passion for this education is rooted in his own story and family history. And not only is he current on the latest research, he has seen what works when trying to get through to someone (honesty and comedy help!). This conversation is one almost everyone will need to have with someone they love eventually; let Ray help guide you through it.
Welcome to the Garage Edition of More Than Sunday! Trust us, it's about as fancy as it sounds. As we continue to socially distance and work from home in the midst of the pandemic, we've left the recording studio behind. Instead, Josh Fitzpatrick has set up a microphone in his home garage, and is having conversations with all-new guests via Zoom. First up is John Niemeyer, who saw his life change forever after receiving a double-dog dare his senior year of college. Now, as precipitous as that sounds, it was the right kind of dare from the right kind of person. It was this dare that took him halfway around the world, and changed his entire view on what it actually means to be a follower of Christ.
When looking around Richardson, Texas for organizations that are on the front lines of helping people in need, your eyes will quickly land on Network of Community Ministries. This wonderful nonprofit has made it its mission to care, coach and empower our neighbors in need as they seek an improved quality of life. It's about much more than providing food; it's about serving the whole person. The whole family. The whole community. Like we've done in previous episodes this season, we'll explore Network from two vantage points; the staff side, and the volunteer side. Kaylan VanPelt, Director of Programs for Network, joins us to share the staff perspective. And we'll also welcome Bonnie Edwards, a member of First United Methodist Church Richardson, to share her experiences from her now fifteen years of volunteer service with Network. Hearing from these two compassionate, generous women will shed a new light on all of the good Network does for the Richardson community.
In the 25th chapter of the book of Matthew, Jesus makes a bold claim; that whenever you visit someone in prison, it's as if you are visiting Jesus himself. "Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me." Kairos Prison Ministry takes this charge quite literally. They reach out to incarcerated men, women, and youth, as well as their families, to share the story of Jesus' love, restoration, and hope. Two members of our church, Mary Howard and Bob Diggs, are deeply involved with the work that Kairos is doing. Not only are they here to share their stories, but they are joined by someone personally impacted by this incredible ministry. Albert Reyna committed his life to Christ while inside prison walls, through the love and leadership of Kairos volunteers. All three of their stories will inspire and challenge you; reminding each of us of Jesus' call to serve the least of these.
Hello podcast friends! We hope you and yours are healthy and safe. With necessary precautions, we are continuing to bring you new episodes. In addition to an update from Josh and Eric on how their respective quarantines are going, you will have the pleasure of meeting Ashley Elsey, the founder and CEO of Minerva Consulting. Minerva Consulting is a marketing firm that seeks to align strategy with creativity and drive the goals, values and dreams of their clients. And in reflection of Ashley's faith, her company has made the decision to focus on work with organizations that make a positive impact in the world. Ashley sees her role and calling as helping these organizations tell their story well, allowing them to make as much impact as possible.
First off, we'd like to say that while we've always been grateful for our More Than Sunday family and the ways this platform has allowed us to stay connected, we are especially so now. So thank you for engaging with us and continuing to seek to love and serve others in this unprecedented time. This week on the podcast, we have a conversation with someone who's sole mission is also to love and serve others. Daniel Roby is the Chief Executive Officer of Austin Street Center - a nonprofit that provides safe shelter and meets the basic needs of the most vulnerable homeless in the Dallas area. Daniel's story of caring for those experiencing homelessness starts when he was seven years old, and continues to this day. For everyone needing a message of light and hope today, this conversation is for you.
As we consider what it means to be in service to those around us, there are not many examples more clear and concrete than feeding our hungry neighbors. A Dallas-based non-profit, Body & Soul, has seen the need and is answering the call. This organization seeks to inspire persons experiencing homelessness to lead hopeful and productive lives. And for over 20 years, First United Methodist Church Richardson has been active in helping achieve this goal. This episode consists of two conversations. The first is with Rev. Joy Anderson, who is the Director of Missions & Outreach at First United Methodist Richardson. The second features Jane Aitchison & Joe Olguin; a married couple who have been serving at Body & Soul for over two decades. Both conversations beautifully highlight the important, life-changing, belly-filling work that is happening at Body & Soul. And both remind us that the call to our faith has just as much to do with our hands and feet as it does with our head and hearts.
This week in our focus on service (and the organizations that are doing fantastic work in that arena), we hear two stories from opposite sides of the same coin. One from the president of a new nonprofit that organizes disability awareness programs intended to break down barriers and foster compassion through interactive experiences, focused on awareness of different abilities, and the other from someone who has found their place through their work with the same organization. The organization is called To Be Like Me. Hollis Owens, our first guest, is not only the president, but also the founder. And our second guest, TJ Smelko, is an adult living with different abilities that helps facilitate the organization's programs. This is a story of calling. Of follow through. Of purpose. And it's one you don't want to miss.
