In a move that defies the stereotype of American mega-churches, the pastor of 24,000-strong Methodist parish in Kansas has announced he's running as Democrat for the US Senate in November. Adam Hamilton is also a best-selling author and podcaster. Hamilton joins a growing chorus of Christian ministers who are reclaiming faith from pro-Trump forces. But he's careful to stress, he's no liberal. Kathryn Post, a journalist from the Religion News Service is following this historic race.As the Royal Commission into antisemitism and social cohesion begins public hearings, we begin a three-part series on how three faith communities – Christian, Jewish, and Muslim – responded to mass violence inflicted on them. The gunmen inspired by the Islamic State group who opened fire on the Jewish Channukah festival in Bondi Beach last December brought religious violence to Australia at an unprecedented scale. But as those who've suffered similar tragedy shows, it is possible to rebuild. Our series, After the Storm, has already begun as a podcast on ABC Listen. But we're bringing part of those stories to air. This week, author Kevin Sack looks at the 2015 tragedy at the Mother Emmanuel Church, an historic Black congregation in South Carolina. Kevin spent a decade working on his landmark book, Mother Emanuel: Two Centuries of Race, Resistance and Forgiveness in One Charleston Church. And you can hear the full length podcast of the Kevin Sack interview here

Chuck Todd unpacks a wave of devastating new polling that shows Americans have lost confidence in Trump across nearly every metric, with his approval cratering among independents and only his hardcore base still standing by him. He notes Trump is underwater on virtually every issue except taxes, immigration, and the border — that his trustworthiness is lower than any past president, that even 22% of his own 2024 voters don't believe he's kept his promises, and that his approval has collapsed with younger voters even as it holds up with the elderly. In a particularly striking finding, only 1 in 10 Americans approve of Trump naming things after himself, and even the "own the libs" voters can't get behind that particular vanity. Todd warns this is a political disaster in the making for Republicans: the enthusiasm gap is now massive in the Democrats' favor, and the Iran war is polling more unpopular than the worst polling ever recorded for Iraq or Vietnam. Yet despite all this, neither party's brand has actually improved with swing voters — both parties still carry almost identical unfavorability ratings, voters of both parties don't even want their leaders to work across the aisle anymore, and the political incentives are now firmly aligned with confrontation rather than compromise — creating an enormous opportunity for independent candidates that neither major party seems prepared to address. On Iran, he says there is no political room for Trump to escalate militarily — his only real escalation option would be ground troops, which would risk total political collapse — and predicts the eventual deal will look like whatever framework the Iranians put forward. He flags a striking recent Tucker Carlson interview in which Carlson was forced to face hard facts, observing that Tucker increasingly looks like a combination of Pat Buchanan and Roger Ailes who is genuinely trying to build a political movement of his own. He returns to the case for expanding the House of Representatives as the fix for the Supreme Court's Voting Rights Act ruling, warns that Republicans could pay a serious political price if Southern voters perceive the GOP as actively trying to disenfranchise Black voters and closes with the news that Janet Mills has dropped out of the Maine Senate race — leaving Democrats now trying to coalesce around Graham Platner, in what Chuck says feels increasingly like a mirror image of the 2016 presidential campaign. Then, Yale political scientist Ian Shapiro — author of the new book After the Fall — joins the Chuck Toddcast for a wide-ranging conversation about the missed opportunities of the post-Cold War era and what it would take to actually fix what's broken in the global political economy. Shapiro argues America fundamentally squandered its chance to integrate Russia into the West after the Soviet collapse — there should have been a Marshall Plan for Russia along the lines of what was done for Germany and Japan after World War II, and both Yeltsin and Putin (in his early years) actively lobbied to join the Western order. Clinton was hesitant to help Russia economically, the 1994 midterm results pushed him away from foreign policy ambition entirely, and the eventual pivot toward NATO expansion in Eastern Europe — rather than transforming NATO into something genuinely inclusive — froze Russia out and is exactly when Putin's worldview hardened into the revanchism we're dealing with today. Shapiro extends this analysis to 2008, calling the financial crisis another massive missed opportunity: Obama had to bail out the banks, but his failure to insist on a parallel bailout for Main Street allowed the elites to rescue themselves while imposing austerity on everyone else, which directly fueled the right-wing populism now reshaping politics across the West. The conversation pivots to what comes next. Shapiro is clear that the good policies of the 2030s won't be a rehash of the New Deal — they need to address modern realities. He argues governments need to help workers be flexible rather than redistributing wealth through politically toxic taxation, advocating instead for portable health insurance and portable child care that follows the worker. Shapiro makes a forceful case for immigration as the only realistic answer to America's demographic challenges, noting that Spain and Poland are economically outperforming much of Europe specifically because they've embraced immigration to support aging populations. He warns that we're living in a world disturbingly similar to the 1930s — if ordinary people don't benefit from economic growth, they will not continue supporting the existing order — and notes that right-wing populists don't actually have answers; they just attack the elites. Shapiro argues Trump is inadvertently benefiting China enormously, but cautions that authoritarian governments are fundamentally bad at managing complex economies, so it's still unlikely China's model wins the 21st century. Shapiro closes by warning that the anti-Trump coalition has become too big to govern, but that if Zohran Mamdani succeeds in New York, it could meaningfully energize progressive politics nationally — proof that the road forward requires real ideas about power, not just opposition to Trumpism. Finally, Chuck hops into the ToddCast Time Machine to revisit the Hindenburg disaster and how it was the origin of “breaking news”, and also answers listeners’ questions in the “Ask Chuck” segment. This episode of Dangerous Dogma features a conversation between Word&Way Editor Brian Kaylor, Lutheran minister and journalist Angela Denker, and Disciples pastor and author Beau Underwood. The conversation includes discussion about the Iran war, Christian opposition to the war, and viral claims of military leaders claiming this will bring "Armageddon." It also includes consideration of faith being invoked in politics by James Talarico in Texas and Adam Hamilton in Kansas. You can watch a video version of the conversation here. Here are a few pieces related to the episode: Brian wrote at A Public Witness about Christian opposition to the Iran war. Hemant Mehta wrote at Friendly Atheist about why he's skeptical about the claims of military leaders invoking "Armageddon." Brian reported at A Public Witness on Doug Wilson preaching at the Pentagon. The bills on the "Ten Commandments" in public schools actually use a highly edited version. The bills on spiritual "chaplains" in public schools usually don't require individuals to actually be chaplains. Guthrie Graves-Fitzsimmons wrote for MS NOW about the faith appeals of James Talarico. First Things attacked the faith of James Talarico. Adam Hamilton is considering a Senate run. Adam Hamilton, a seasoned expert in gold stocks with over two decades of experience, emphasizes the importance of strategically selecting investments within the gold mining sector. He advocates for focusing on mid-tier miners, which he believes offer superior growth potential compared to major miners. These mid-tier companies, operating at 300,000 to 1,000,000 ounces annually, are more agile and capable of expanding their operations effectively. Hamilton highlights their lower costs and better ability to generate cash flows, making them a more attractive investment option. In contrast, major miners often struggle with high costs and face challenges such as overpaying for mergers and acquisitions (M&A), leading to diluted earnings. Their large market capitalizations make it difficult for them to grow production sustainably, unlike mid-tier miners which can achieve significant growth through new projects. Hamilton also discusses the cyclical nature of exploration spending within the industry. Recent years have seen reduced exploration activity due to unfavorable market conditions, potentially leading to a future supply deficit. He underscores the importance of diversification in investment strategies, advising against overcommitting to any single asset. Instead, he recommends spreading investments across various sectors to mitigate risk. During periods like the summer doldrums, Hamilton suggests that investors use this time for thorough research and homework to identify undervalued opportunities. He encourages a patient approach, noting that buying windows may be brief once favorable conditions arise. This week we offer a heartfelt Memorial Day tribute, with Army combat veteran and rising country music star Scotty Hasting, who will perform at this year's National Memorial Day concert in Washington DC. (PBS) We begin with his memories of a life changing deployment to Afghanistan. He spoke about the good times … and the bad. We hear about life on a remote combat outpost, how he survived being shot 10 times, and the ultimate sacrifice made by his best friend, Adam Hamilton. Hasting shares how he initially found therapy in archery before COVID struck. Then facing isolation, he picked up a guitar. In just a couple years he went from learning guitar from YouTube videos, to playing stages all over Nashville, and he described his miraculous big break, when he was discovered by record label, Black River Entertainment. Hasting discusses his meteoric rise in the music business, and the song he wrote for his fallen best friend. And we hear the emotional military song he recorded with Lee Brice and the legendary Dolly Parton. We wrap with a listen to his epic, feel-good summer anthem “Pro Beer”. Pop a top and click play! Real estate investing can be incredibly rewarding, but let's be honest – the accounting side can be a real headache. This week, we talked with Adam Hamilton, co-founder of REI Hub, a software designed to help landlords and investors manage their books effectively. Adam's insights are pure gold, especially if you're tired of endless spreadsheets and tax season stress. This interview was a game-changer!Why REI Hub?Adam's journey started with a simple observation: many real estate investors are struggling to manage their finances effectively. This is often due to a lack of time, accounting expertise, and use of general accounting software not designed for the specific needs of the rental property world. Unlike other investors, Adam understands the need for specialized software. He wants to keep things simple!Top 3 Mistakes Investors Make with Their Accounting:Adam shared the three most common mistakes investors make with their rental property accounting:No Strong Foundation: Many investors don't set up proper accounting systems from the start. This includes failing to separate their personal and business finances, leading to messy books and missed opportunities for deductions. Hint: Mixing personal and business finances is like trying to find a specific sock in a giant laundry pile—a complete mess.Failing to Review: Many investors enter transactions into their accounting systems without regularly reviewing the data or generating reports. This can lead to unexpected surprises at tax time. Think of this as trying to navigate with a torn map. You'll probably get lost!Ignoring Key Deductions: It's easy to overlook potential tax deductions such as mileage, depreciation, and loan interest expense. Missing out on deductions is like leaving money on the table – a big no-no in real estate!REI Hub: Your Accounting Solution:REI Hub aims to solve these problems by providing:Intuitive Software: The software is designed specifically for real estate investors, with transaction types and account categories that closely match the language of the industry.Integration with TurboTenant: If you're already using TurboTenant for property management, REI Hub integrates seamlessly, eliminating the need for double data entry.Dynamic Loan Amortization: REI Hub automatically breaks down your loan payments into their principal, interest, and escrow components, making it easier to track and report these expenses.Automated Tax Review Process: REI Hub walks you through a tax review process, making sure you aren't overlooking key deductions or tax strategies. We're not CPAs, but we'll provide your CPA with all the ammunition they need.Expert Support: REI Hub's support team is knowledgeable about real estate accounting and is available to answer your questions. This is support that actually understands your struggles!Beyond the Basics:This interview also touched upon:Asset Protection Strategies: Keeping personal and business finances separate protects against potential liability. (Think of it as separating your business's expensive suits from your old college sweatshirts—one protects your investment, while the other keeps you comfortable.)Tax Law Changes: Stay up-to-date on changes to the tax laws that may impact your rental income and expenses.Humor to Relate To:“Mixing personal and business finances is like trying to find a specific sock in a giant laundry pile—a complete mess.”“Missing out on deductions is like leaving money on the table – a big no-no in real estate!”Call to Action:Ready to take control of your rental property accounting? Tom welcomes back Adam Hamilton, founder of Zeal LLC. a newsletter service and is a market speculator. According to Hamilton, the recent rally in gold prices is primarily driven by fundamentals, technicals, and sentiment, with seasonality playing a small role. He noted that gold stocks are undervalued compared to gold prices, presenting a significant opportunity for investors. Hamilton pointed out that physical demand, such as Indian weddings and Chinese New Year, contributes to the underlying strength of the gold market. However, he emphasized that sentiment and herd mentality are crucial factors in the current rally, particularly during the spring season when optimism and exuberance tend to increase. Adam also discussed the Commitments of Traders Report (COT) and how it can be used to gauge market sentiment and identify potential trends in gold futures markets. He tracks changes in speculators' long and short positions over time to identify periods of buying or selling that may indicate a change in market sentiment or trend. Hamilton also highlighted the importance of tracking gold ETF holdings as an indicator of investment demand for gold. However, he noted that it is essential to distinguish between physical demand and ETF demand when analyzing the gold market. He suggested breaking down western physical demand into categories such as bars and coins and foreign demand from regions such as Europe and Asia. Hamilton believes that there is still significant potential for investment demand to drive up the price of gold, with speculators having only completed 55% of their total potential buying since the uptrend began in early October. He also pointed out that retail investors will drive the surge in demand for physical gold, leading to reports of shortages and pushing up the physical price. Adam is interested in the potential of physically-backed digital gold currencies, especially among younger generations who are attracted to digital assets. He believes there will be high demand for a Bitcoin-like tradable vehicle backed by physical gold, making it easier for people to own and transact with gold. In a recent gathering of pastors, Adam Hamilton noted, that there is the world as it is, and the world as it should be. The world as it should be is what we often refer to as the Kingdom of God. We see the world as it should be in Jesus. That is, in the way Jesus lived, welcomed, forgave, shared meals and table fellowship, healed, fed, and loved everyone, everywhere, we see what the world as it should be looks like. Last Sunday, I shared with our confirmands that part of what it means to be disciples of Christ and members of the Church, is that we join God in the mission of healing and transforming the world so that it looks more like God's hope and dream for the world. We bring our gifts and passion alongside others to live out God's better way of being human and make the world more as it should be. On Sunday, we'll hear the story of Lazarus, reflect on the life of St. Patrick, and celebrate with our confirmands as they come to profess their faith and lean more fully into God's hope and dream for their lives and the life of the world.
As we conclude our book and sermon series this Sunday on Adam Hamilton's "Unafraid", we'll explore events that happen to us all: aging, illness, and death. While some of the fears that grip us in life are often unwarranted, it is beyond doubt that each of us will, in fact, become sick, get older, and die. So how do we cope with our fears that accompany these certainties of life? The Bible, and Jesus in particular, offer words of encouragement and hope to help us overcome our fears and worries. Read Part Five of Unafraid, and John 14: 25-27 to prepare for worship this Sunday.
This Sunday, we continue in our Church-Wide Study "Unafraid: Living with Courage and Hope in Uncertain Times" by Adam Hamilton. We'll be looking at Part 3: Failure, Disappointing Others, Insignificance, and Loneliness. We will learn from Psalm 139 about what it means to discover our identity within our relationship with God. This relationship should be primary in our lives. It should be the place where we find purpose and worth. It is through companionship with God that we discover ourselves to be accepted, valued, and loved.
DUMC is hosting a Church-Wide Study through March 10 on the book "Unafraid: Living with Courage and Hope in Uncertain Times" by Adam Hamilton. This Sunday's sermon relates to Part Two in the book: Crime, Race, Terrorism, and Politics.
On Sunday, we begin our congregation-wide book study and a 5-part sermon series using Adam Hamilton's Unafraid: Living with Courage and Hope in Uncertain Times. Fear is pervasive. It undermines relationships, makes us suspicious of others, is the root of much conflict and war, and is counter to the Gospel's command to love. On Sunday, we'll reflect on Isaiah's encouragement to Israel to counter fear by trusting God. Isaiah writes, “Do not fear, for I am with you…”. (Isaiah 41:8-10) More than 140 times the Bible encourages us, “Do not be afraid.” God's desire is that we not be captive to fear but free to love and therein lies our hope. So join us for this important conversation by reading along and listening to the sermons. We'll see you on Sunday.

Tom welcomes back Adam Hamilton, founder of Zeal LLC. a newsletter service and is a market speculator. Adam discusses the seasonality in gold, which typically sees three different rally periods each year, similar to agricultural commodities. However, there is no fundamental reason for gold's spring rallies - it seems people are simply more optimistic during this time, leading to more buying of gold stocks, starting around mid-March and ending around May. Adam explains how moving averages are useful for determining if equities are overbought or oversold, and suggests raising trailing stops to preserve gains when it is significantly overbought. He notes that the Fed is under pressure from other central banks that are pausing on hiking, causing huge problems in the economy and instability in banks - rate hikes are hitting ordinary people hard, and those with mortgages could become increasingly vulnerable. Adam expects the Fed to hike one more time and then pause to see the impact, closely monitoring labor markets data, although he is aware that some of the U.S. BLS data is highly suspect. Alternative data sets are showing declining labor growth, and if labor markets are far weaker than expected, this could have outsized consequences when Fed policy is mis-applied. He believes that the dual mandate should not exist, and the Fed's focus should simply be on price stability - inflation is just an effect caused by too much money in the system, and the value of money should be set by free markets. Silver is seen as a sentiment gauge for gold and has been doing well, although futures buying is waning. Gold above 2000 is attracting a lot of interest. Lastly, he discusses the miners and why investor sentiment is taking time to adjust to this new market environment. Time Stamp References:0:00 - Introduction0:40 - Spring & Seasonality6:06 - C.B. Guest Links:Website: https://www.zealllc.com/Articles: http://zealllc.com/essays.htm Adam Hamilton founded Zeal LLC in early 2000. He started investing in stocks when he was 12 years old, using money from summer jobs. He grew up fascinated by stock markets, dreaming of making a living in this unique realm where compensation is not limited by time on task like most other professions. After growing up in a small-town banking family in rural North Dakota, Adam left for school at the University of Colorado at Boulder. While watching the markets and trading, he studied finance, accounting, and entrepreneurship. Adam went on to be a Big Six CPA and consultant after graduation, never stopping learning. By early 2000, Adam finally had enough experience and capital to found Zeal at 25 years old. Rather than hide his research and trading work in a hedge fund, Adam wanted to help others thrive in the markets. So he started sharing his now-world-famous market research work through very-affordable newsletters. Customers raved, and many millions of dollars of newsletter sales later Adam was blessed to become a self-made millionaire. He is very thankful to be living his dream, and plans to research, trade, and share wisdom through newsletters for the rest of his life. Adam is a Christian saved by Jesus Christ. He and his wife are greatly blessed with 2 children, and they live in Colorado.
