In this NBN episode, NBN host Hollay Ghadery speaks with Siphiwe Gloria Ndlovu about her phenomenal novel, The Creation of Half-Broken People. (House of Anansi Press, 2025). Stupendous African Gothic, by the winner of Yale University's Windham–Campbell Prize Showcasing African Gothic at its finest, The Creation of Half-Broken People is the extraordinary tale of a nameless woman plagued by visions. She works for the Good Foundation and its museum filled with artifacts from the family's exploits in Africa, the Good family members all being descendants of Captain John Good, of King Solomon's Mines fame. Our heroine is happy with her association with the Good family, until one day she comes across a group of protestors outside the museum. Instigating the group is an ancient woman, who our heroine knows is not real. She knows too that the secrets of her past have returned. After this encounter, the nameless woman finds herself living first in an attic and then in a haunted castle, her life anything but normal as her own intangible inheritance unfolds through the women who inhabit her visions. With a knowing nod to classics of the Gothic genre, Siphiwe Gloria Ndlovu weaves the threads of a complex colonial history into the present through people “half-broken” by the stigmas of race and mental illness, all the while balancing the humanity of her characters against the cruelty of empire in a hypnotic, haunting account of love and magic. SIPHIWE GLORIA NDLOVU is a Zimbabwean writer, scholar, and filmmaker. She is a 2022 recipient of the Windham–Campbell Prize for Fiction. Her debut novel, The Theory of Flight, won the Sunday Times Barry Ronge Fiction Prize in 2019. Her second and third novels, The History of Man and The Quality of Mercy, were shortlisted for the Sunday Times Fiction Prize. After almost two decades of living in North America, Ndlovu has returned home to Bulawayo, the City of Kings. Learn more about your ad choices. On today's podcast, Arizona Real Estate Mogul and Change Agent Tim McBride shares his personal journey of finding a bigger purpose beyond real estate, leaving a legacy of service. BACK STORY Originally from Vancouver, Canada, Tim McBride pursued a career in professional sports and entertainment upon earning undergraduate and graduate degrees in the field. After his sports-tech company plateaued, he found himself back in Arizona and pivoted into what has been a fruitful six-year career in real estate. Now residing in the Scottsdale area, McBride works with residential clients in Scottsdale and nearby locales. He strives to be intentional in his interactions and build real relationships with his clientele. Describing his approach as relationship-driven and impact-focused, he challenges himself daily to elevate his standard of service to clients and community. With a passion for real estate and serving his community, Tim began The Change Agent Golf Classic, a tournament benefiting The Driven Project, a nonprofit dedicated to bringing joy and strength to children battling critical illnesses. Recently established in Scottsdale by founder Kevin Gordon, The Driven Project provides these young warriors with unforgettable “supercare therapy” experiences, giving them a chance to ride in exotic cars and escape the challenges they face - even if it's just for the day. This uplifting experience offers a profound sense of hope, strength, and inspiration for these children and their families during an incredibly challenging time. In addition to The Change Agent Golf Classic, Tim also heads the Homes for Good Foundation, a purpose driven movement of independent real estate professionals designed to tell a much bigger story beyond the transaction and be a catalyst for inspiration, impact and the transformation in our neighborhoods and communities. Where every real estate transaction means immediate local impact. The wildfires in Southern California have devastated communities. Nordstrom has been proud to serve the Los Angeles region for decades, and we believe we have a responsibility to support our people, our customers and our community as they recover from this tragedy. In this episode, we're going to explore our company's values and the important work our team is doing to help out a community in need. Our host Pete Nordstrom talks with a few Nordstrom leaders — Michelle Korb, regional manager of Southern California, and store managers Mari Lagunas and Lucy Minasian — who all displayed incredible poise and empathy during this crisis as they led support efforts for our team members and customers. A loyal Nordstrom customer named Kristin Mauck describes Nordstrom as a safe haven for her sister in the darkest moment of her life. You'll also hear the devastating account of Pete's good friend Sam Jones, who lost his home in the Pacific Palisades fire. We're proud of the compassion of our store teams who've donated their time and money to help each other and our community, and we as a company are committed to contributing to the ongoing relief efforts. We've partnered with organizations like the American Red Cross and the Good+ Foundation to raise money for shelter, food, and supplies and we're also matching our employees' donations dollar for dollar. We've been amazed to see employees from across the country chip in to support — it shows that our team has a commitment to service that extends far beyond the walls of our buildings. The Be Good Foundation was founded by Rebecca Rusch who among many things is an ultra endurance athlete, adventure cyclist, a world champion multiple times and the star in a film called Blood Road. At the Be Good Foundation, the bike is the center of their work as a catalyst for healing, empowerment, and evolution. Megan is currently on an epic bikepacking adventure, riding from New York City to a cycling event in Idaho put on by Rebecca Rusch called Rebecca's Private Idaho. Megan has a mantra, "One Rotation at a Time," that to her is a reminder of the power of persistence, the importance of mental health, and the healing nature of cycling. She is raising money for the Be Good Foundation along the way so that there can be future Be Good Foundation scholarship recipients. She is going to tell us about her adventure and experiences as a solo traveler making her way to Idaho. [13:22] - In the early days of messaging, there was an inherent trust. We didn't think about the bad guys yet. [15:57] - Communication platforms were never intended to secure communication. [17:31] - Most communication apps now do begin with good intent. Kurt describes WhatsApp as an example until it was purchased by Facebook. [19:50] - We want information and access, but we want safety, too. [21:38] - We have to put trust in someone to strike a balance. [23:41] - The Federal Trade Commission has announced apps that don't support legal due process and implemented a fine for use of them. [25:56] - Kurt shares a true story that is a great example of inside trade problems in messaging apps. [28:28] - Using secret messaging apps or apps that feature disappearing messages are hard to track. You could be affiliated with someone doing something illegal. [30:29] - Privacy and security do help us retain rights we have. [32:35] - Messaging issues also impact the medical industry. [34:07] - Some countries have legislation that ban secret messaging apps, but they aren't really being enforced. [36:25] - BUNKR has consumers and public usage in 32 countries worldwide and is popular with families. [37:52] - When companies have more control over their app, there is less criminality involved. [40:02] - This service is invitation based. You cannot receive random messages from anyone you do not invite. [41:55] - “The entire planet deserves to conduct their affairs with dignity at bank level security.” [44:29] - Kurt leans towards following United States laws and legal action, but also has a large legal team to help guide through unusual situations.
