“How to Break Up with Your Friends" and more with Erin Falconer

Play Episode Listen Later May 16, 2023 69:46

Today we have a conversation with Erin Falconer, therapist and author of the book “How to Break Up with Your Friends”, discussing the importance of intentional friendship and how to navigate conflicts in these relationships. Erin explains her inspiration for writing her book, noting that while society is obsessed with tracking information, such as calorie intake, steps taken, there is no agreed-upon language or blueprint for navigating friendship. The lack of focus on intentional friendship can be attributed to the fact that traditional therapy only focuses on the individual, family therapy, and couples therapy, with no equivalent for friendship. Join me in this candid conversation and please, let me know your thoughts and personal experiences around this topic! Takeaways from this episode: Normalizing intentional friendships can help us all work towards fostering stronger, more fulfilling friendships in our lives. It's okay to take a deeper look at our friendships and evaluate them. It's important to recognize which friendships are important to us and which ones may not be worth investing our time and energy into. When having a difficult conversation with a friend, it's best to do it in person or at least over the phone to avoid misunderstandings and show respect for the other person's feelings. However, if the other person is highly defensive, emotional, or reactive, it may be better to send an email so they can process their reaction and respond later. Before deciding to end a friendship, it's important to assess whether the relationship still makes sense for you and what you need at this point in your life. A foundational and secure friendship relies on not expecting too much from each other, and always being there for each other. Trauma bonding playing a significant role in friendship. Appreciate everything for what it is and don't take things too seriously. It's essential to look at oneself and focus on being a good friend rather than blaming others for not being there. How To Make Adult Friendships with Female Friendship Coach Danielle Bayard Jackson

Soooo… how do we make friends again..? If this daunting question has run through your head, you are in good company (even though it may not seem that way). After college, one of the biggest transitions that was felt was drifting apart from friends and not understanding how (or where!?) to meet new ones. In this episode, we're finally going to learn how to make new friends as an adult! Look at us go. We're having an engaging conversation with Danielle Bayard Jackson, a female friendship coach and educator who speaks nationally on the subject of friendship as a wellness imperative. She is dedicated to teaching women how to create and maintain better female friendships. We'll also be talking about women's cooperation, communication, and conflicts. This is going to be a good one, so stay tuned! Don't forget to subscribe and share the episode with your friends. Key points for finding friends as an adult: Don't feel awkward about speaking to an old friend and picking up where you left off. Become a regular somewhere. Rethink your fantasy of what it will be like to meet new people. It's not always going to be at a big party where it's really obvious. Instead, it might be in the line at Target or somewhere random. Stay flexible. Remember, there may come a time when a friendship ends or needs to be demoted. Be aware of friendship breakup territory and be prepared to handle it. Hope you enjoy! This is a very special episode for me because I got to interview my best friend of 20 years… Danya. She's a musical theater actress, corporate nine-to-five, girly, thats obsessed with home decor (just like me). As we enter our 30s, we're realizing that friendships shift and evolve in many different ways. At one point, we became codependent and decided to take a friend break. Now that we have more knowledge on boundaries, self-care, and choice, we have a whole new approach to our friendship and environment. Listen to the full episode and take this episode as a quick reminder to shoot your oldest friend a text telling them how much you appreciate them. It will go along way and can't recommend it enough. Key Discussion Points: Red flags of codependent friendships: Asking your friend to make decisions for you, and then blaming them when things go wrong. Spending too much time together, using it as an excuse to avoid addressing your own issues and insecurities. Green flags: Asking your friend if the relationship ever becomes too much for them, or they feel like they need a break from discussing certain topics, or feel like you are talking too much about yourself and the relationship. You give them the full freedom to be open and honest with you. Giving legitimate and valid reasons for your opinions on your friend's life. Welcome back to season 2 of On The Rocks. I'm Olivia Noceda, and in this episode, we're going to be talking about friendships. I asked a question on my Instagram about making new friends and received a lot of amazing responses. Today, I want to share my thoughts and opinions on this topic, based on my personal experience. I hope you enjoy the show! In this episode, we cover 10 key points about friendships: To make new friends, start by doing something you already enjoy so that you have something in common with the other person. Spend time getting to know each other and building comfortability. It's important to have multiple friends and friend groups, and not put everything into one friend or one relationship. If you have friends with kids, ask yourself how you can relate to them and what you can do to connect with them. If you're in a toxic friendship or group, consider reducing the frequency of hanging out with those people. Navigating co-dependent friendships requires open communication. The best friendships allow for an open dialogue, and for you to bring up concerns you have about the friendship. A painful truth: friendships aren't supposed to last forever. Friendship breakups are sometimes necessary, but boundaries can be set to avoid a complete breakup. Having individual friendships in a group without others being left out, or vice versa. Ask yourself, what are you insecure about in your friendships? What are you insecure about in yourself, and how do you come off to your friends? What is making you feel this way? Before sharing your trauma with a friend, make sure they're emotionally in a place to be able to listen to you. Finally, green vs. red flags for friends in your 30s. To me, some green flags are someone who is conscious of their health and well-being, has their own life and interests, has lower expectations for a friendship, is open to trying new things, and balances out negativity with positivity. Red flags are the opposite of green flags, such as toxic behavior, being obsessed with their partner, or not being present. Feel free to DM me and let me know your thoughts about these ideas in general. Thanks for listening! Thanks to our partner Seed for sponsoring this episode. Hi! I'm Olivia Noceda, The founder and creator of self-titled blog and social media destination, and honestly, I'm just trying to figure my life out. All too often I found myself navigating the kind of a mess, kind of beautiful dynamic of living, and I'd figure I'm probably not alone. On The Rocks, is a limited series podcast designed to give it straight up. Each conversation will aim to expand your mindset and empower you to trust yourself as you move through your own life. Our first season is titled "No thanks, but I'm not drinking", a phrase that we're becoming more and more used to hearing when we're out with friends. Join me, as I dedicate 10 weeks to exploring the sober-curious movement and the overall relationship with alcohol. Alongside experts, will dive into the scientific cultural and social impact alcohol has on us as individuals and as a society. Additionally, we'll hear personal accounts from influential members of the sober curious phase. All we're trying to better understand is how the consumption of alcohol has become so deeply embedded into our culture, and what that made means for you and me. I hope you find these conversations insightful and thought-provoking and that you leave with a greater sense of confidence in how you choose to live your life.
