Happy New Year! Welcome to 2025 and to year 3 of our January Jumpstart series. Kicking off this month’s lineup of transformative conversations is a guest that I know several of you will know and recognize: Les Alfred, host of the Balanced Black Girl podcast. With expertise as a personal trainer, nutrition coach, and certified yoga instructor, Les uses her platform to support her community in creating nourishing habits that help them create the necessary space to live their best lives. In today’s discussion, we approached a topic that I know many of you are thinking through any time we enter a new year — how can I “glow-up” into my best self? What habits might we consider adopting in order to facilitate a glow-up? Along the glow-up journey, how do I handle situations in which I’m forced to step out of my comfort zone? And lastly, what changes might I have to make in my life to fully actualize my desired glow-up? We answer those questions and more in today’s episode. About the Podcast The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. What does it mean to prioritize mental health as much as physical health? Join us as we unpack this critical conversation with Les Alfred, host of the Balanced Black Girl podcast, and LaTosha Brown, a political strategist and community activist. Together, we navigate the complexities of mental health struggles, drawing from our own experiences of show cancellations, financial turmoil, betrayals, and difficult romantic relationships. We explore the necessity of continuous mental health care, treating it with the same urgency and consistency as physical health. Listen as we share poignant stories of personal and familial mental health challenges, including the heartbreaking loss of a loved one to suicide. We discuss the importance of recognizing early signs of mental health issues and the value of therapy, while stressing the importance of personalized coping mechanisms—whether that's finding joy in small activities, leaning on friends, or nurturing spiritual beliefs. Unique challenges faced by Black women in diagnosing and addressing their mental health are brought to light, advocating for a holistic approach that blends spiritual and practical support systems. Our conversation also touches on generational attitudes towards mental health and the societal dismissal of Black women's pain. Reflecting on the impact of the Black Power Movement and the contrasting values of subsequent generations, we critique the trendiness of therapy language and emphasize the importance of resilience. We challenge the notion of a 'soft life' and address how capitalism and the media often exploit Black pain. This episode is a heartfelt exploration of trauma, resilience, and the journey towards embracing both our joys and struggles, urging us to foster a culture of open and honest dialogue about mental health. In today's episode, we're joined by Les Alfred, a proponent of the "sober curious" movement. Les is an inspiration, authentic, and has been on a journey to find her own practice of self-love. We pull from child hood memories to spark inspiration and tapping into what brings us more joy and understanding how these little routines can make us happier. We recognize that this topic is sensitive. Unlike other addictions, alcohol is a part of everyone's life. However, it is important to reconsider the societal belief that drinking is a necessary part of socializing and shift towards healthier and more authentic lifestyles. During our conversation with Les, we covered the following points: Cultural norms that suggest drinking is a way to socialize and why it's worth reconsidering this belief. Ways to take pleasure in your own company and connect with yourself. Techniques for becoming curious about yourself and identifying patterns that prevent authenticity. The importance of having wellness conversations that include the perspectives of people of color. How to feel confident and proud of your decisions, instead of insecure. Enjoy the episode! We talked about so much! Les is amazing but we really put our focus in this episode on our own experiences as black women in the wellness space, learning about discomfort ( the good and bad) and talking about what does safety in spirituality look like for us? For you? MEET LES Founder and Host, Balanced Black Girl "At the age of 20, I began my personal wellness journey in hopes of finding inspiration and energy while working my first corporate job (let's just say it wasn't a good fit). In a desperate attempt to stop falling asleep at my desk, I tried to introduce some radical concepts (for me at the time): getting up to walk a little more, actually drinking water, and learning to cook my own food. Before I knew it, I started having more energy, was building strength, had more mental clarity, and was becoming more confident than I had been before. Thus, my love of wellness was born and I wanted to share it. I started my career in fitness as a personal trainer and fitness instructor in 2012, and launched my first blog The Balanced Berry in 2014 to share my love of fitness and nutrition with others. As a personal trainer and nutrition coach, I spent over five years helping women reach their wellness goals in a balanced, sustainable way. After taking some time off from fitness in 2018, I pivoted to create Balanced Black Girl to introduce my community to Black and brown women experts in health and wellness and create a comfortable place for accessible wellness conversations and connections. Now as a 200-hr YT, I lead wellness conversations and create mindfulness-focused content to help us all find our balance." Les Alfred saw a lack in the representation of strong, colored women in the fitness community, so she decided to create a space herself. The Balanced Black Girl Podcast focuses on creating an inclusive wellness media hub that is more representative for more diverse groups of people. She works to amplify other women of color in wellness space so more people can get to know them and their message. About Les Alfred Focusing on creating a platform to help more people feel included and finding the most authentic version of yourself, Les is a force to be reckoned with and is here to share the story behind her huge transformation. Everything from getting comfortable sharing your voice, to the seasons of our fitness and establishing good habits is on the table today. It is time to start paying attention to more voices and broaden your perspective. There is so much more to health and nutrition than just doing squats, and Les is here to share all of it and more to you today. What are your thoughts about diversity in the wellness space? Let us know your thoughts in the comments on the episode page!   On Today's Episode Being a visible minority in the wellness space How to break out of the corporate world and into the personal training world Creating healthy habits and cementing them into your routine early Finding your core wellness values and non-negotiable wellness habits Cultural appropriation in wellness traditions and ways you can honor those traditions   Quotes “I decided okay, I want to be a personal trainer because I really love fitness, and I totally hated my corporate job, like the typical millennial story. And I was like, maybe if I can just help people work out, they will enjoy it as much as I do and they will get as much as I do.” (14:02) “Everyone wants a quick fix, they want the secret. And really the secret is you do it one step at a time, one habit at a time until you master it, and then you move onto the next thing.” (20:08) “When I learned how to just kind of relax and let myself have seasons and be a bit more intuitive with both movement and food, that was when my body was able to get to kind of a set point where it just kind of stays regardless of my fitness routine looks like.” (24:54) “More people need to be included in these conversations. I was like, that's what I want to do. I want to facilitate conversations surrounding women of color in wellness. That’s it! That’s what we’re going to do... Major lightbulb” (38:16) “I think not often enough do we take the time to understand where those practices actually come from, and what cultural significance they could have to people. And we are not really paying due diligence to make sure we're sharing and practicing these things in a way that is respectful to those cultures.” (43:25)   Resources Mentioned In This Show  The GOOD Fest The Balanced Black Girl Podcast The Balanced Black Girl Website Follow Balanced Black Girl Podcast on Instagram Follow Balanced Les on Instagram Harder to Kill Facebook Club   Check out the full show notes here! Wrapping up the season on a healthy note with guest Les Alfred of The Balanced Berry. Les is a fitness trainer and nutrition coach who believes all women should embrace their beauty and have confidence in exactly who they are. Les’s passion for wellness was birthed out of her first experience in the corporate world. After spending eight hours in a cubicle and noticing how depleted she felt afterward, she sought solace in working out, which began to renew her energy. Shortly after, she became a certified personal trainer, building a brand that encourages people to build a foundation in wellness. Les’s perspective and approach to training inspired me to let go of my excuses and hopefully it will do the same for you.
