Eve of 21st Ramadan 1446 AHMarch 20th 2025- Imām ‘Ali's silence during the 25 years of the khulafā' was intentional; he did not accept their legitimacy but refrained from armed conflict for the greater good of Islam while offering guidance in Qur'ānic and judicial matters. - He described his exclusion from the caliphate as unjust, yet he chose patience over conflict, despite feeling deep pain and witnessing the plundering of his rights. - Imām ‘Ali invested in reviving barren lands, digging wells, and planting palm trees, dedicating much of his wealth as endowments (waqf) to support his family and the needy. - His charity extended beyond land development; he also focused on the emancipation of slaves, personally freeing a thousand with earnings from his own labor. - His personal lifestyle was one of extreme simplicity, despite his wealth; he ensured that leaders lived modestly so that the poor would not feel deprived and the wealthy would remain humble. - Despite being a ruler, he sealed his simple food to prevent any addition of luxury, emphasizing that a just leader should live like the weakest member of his community. - His killer, Ibn Muljim, was described as "the most wretched of people," yet Imām ‘Ali instructed his family to treat him kindly, even sharing his own food with him. - During his final moments, the doctor confirmed that his fatal wound was beyond healing, advising only milk as sustenance, which Imām ‘Ali shared with his assassin. - His funeral was conducted in secrecy, attended only by family and loyal companions due to fears that enemies would desecrate his grave. - His daughter Zaynab witnessed not only his secret burial but also the tragedies of Karbala, where the body of Ḥusayn was left unburied in the open plains. - Unexpected downfall of Asad's regime in the Middle East sparks discussions among Shi‘a circles about the appearance of Imām al-Mahdi. - Encouragement to study signs of the appearance but caution against linking them to current events. - In 2011, the Arab Spring led to political upheaval, including Syria's civil war where Asad's regime endured. - Iranian group attempted to connect aḥādith to ongoing events, producing a documentary criticized by scholars. - Warning against interpreting religious texts to fit political events without deep study. - Quotation from Imām al-Bāqir (a) stressing that predicting the exact time of appearance is misleading. - Concerns arise about the safety of the shrine of Bibi Zainab after HTS, linked to Al-Qaeda, gains power. - HTS leader claims separation from extremist groups and promises a peaceful society. - Skepticism due to historical examples like the Taliban's broken promises in Afghanistan. - Rapid changes in Syria cause despair among those hoping for immediate positive outcomes. - Reminder from Islamic history (Battle of Uḥud) not to lose hope after setbacks. - Emphasis that truth is not tied to military victories but to righteousness and belief. The Prophet's ﷺ marriage to Zaynab bint Jaḥsh (rA) stands unique among all of his marriages because of its explicit pronouncement in the Qur'an. Despite the stated theological, social, and legal goals the Qur'an posits as the reason for its contraction, the marriage has remained a topic of contention for centuries. This paper examines the many internal and external contradictions that characterize the story, many of which render the lovestruck narrative logistically unfeasible. It will illustrate that, far from a marriage of convenience based on passion, it was a necessary one to enact social and specifically marital reform.Note: The audio files are generated using AI technology. - Today marks the birth anniversary of Zaynab bint ‘Ali wa Fatimah (a), known as the Lady of Courage. - Islam emerged in a society where Arabs saw female children as a disgrace, often hiding or rejecting their daughters, as described in Qur'an 16:58-59. - Allah granted Prophet Muhammad children, but his sons didn't survive; this highlighted that his lineage would continue through his daughter, Fatimah, despite ridicule from the Arabs. - In the modern era, when Muslim men mistreat women, Islam is often blamed, while misbehavior in other faiths is not attributed to their religions. - The twisting of Islamic teachings and the Qur'an can be replicated in other religions too, such as in certain Biblical teachings, like in Ecclesiasticus, which refers to the birth of a daughter as a “loss.” - Imam aṣ-Ṣādiq (a) emphasized daughters as good deeds and sons as blessings, showing the value Islam places on daughters. - The Prophet's treatment of his daughter, Fatimah, was revolutionary, referring to her as “the mother of her father.” - Zaynab, daughter of ‘Ali and Fatimah, was named for her father's pride in her, with both daughters named Zaynab, “al-kubra” and “aṣ-ṣughra.” - The blame on faith for followers' actions is seen in other contexts too, such as the U.S. elections where societal and gender biases are highlighted, yet rarely attributed to religion. - Some verses in Christian scriptures reflect restrictive views on women, which appear in social patterns, as in the presidential runs of Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris. - In contrast, Zaynab's role in Islam was one of high esteem, trusted with significant matters by her family, reflecting the honor Islam grants to strong women in its legacy.Donate towards our programs today: https://jaffari.org/donate/ Friday Juma Khutba November 8th, 2024 Jaffari Community Centre (JCC Live)
Today I talked to Christopher Paul Clohessy about Half of My Heart: The Narratives of Zaynab, Daughter of Alî (Gorgias Press, 2020). As Abû ʿAbd Allâh al-Ḥusayn, son of ʿAlî and Fâṭima and grandson of Muḥammad, moved inexorably towards death on the field of Karbalâʾ, his sister Zaynab was drawn ever closer to the centre of the family of Muḥammad, the 'people of the house' (ahl al-bayt). There she would remain for a few historic days, challenging the wickedness of the Islamic leadership, defending the actions of her brother, initiating the commemorative rituals, protecting and nurturing the new Imâm, al-Ḥusayn's son ʿAlî b. al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlî b. Seerah 55: The Prophet Loses Khadijah Welcome to Seerah Pearls, which aims to highlight some tantalising learning points from each episode of the Seerah- Life of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam). At this point, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) is close to 51 years old. It is a decade since he received revelation and started preaching Islam. He has seen many different things, including the initial lack of response from his own family, to the embracing of Islam by those who were nearest and dearest e.g. Abu Bakr (RA), Ali (RA) and Khadijah (RA). A small community was coming together. Opposition was also rising, but he continued on his mission. A group of Muslims had migrated to Abyssinia to escape the persecution, but numbers continued to grow inside and outside Makkah. In the 11th year of Prophethood, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) would start a period that was very difficult and a huge shift in the overall message and his life. This all began with a personal tragedy: the passing of his beloved wife Khadijah (RA) after 25 years of marriage. Khadijah (RA) was of noble lineage from Makkah and had a great reputation as a dignified, educated and respected individual. She had been widowed and was wealthy. Khadijah (RA) ran her own business and would hire people to buy and sell goods on her behalf. That is how the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) first came to interact with her. Her status is very elevated: when the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) was shaking after receiving the revelation, she held his hand and accepted Islam. She was the mother of his children and the first person to make wudu and pray with the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) after he was shown by Gibreel (AS). She fully supported the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) in his difficult mission, never raising her voice or bothering him. Gibreel (AS) came to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) and asked him to convey salaam on behalf of her Lord and on behalf of himself. She was also given the good news of a home in paradise made from a single hollowed-out pearl, where there would be no noise or difficulty. The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) missed Khadijah (RA) dearly after her death. Even the sight of her necklace which she had passed on to her daughter Zaynab brought tears to his eyes as it reminded him of her. Even after her passing, when an animal would be slaughtered, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) would distribute some to the friends of Khadijah (RA).
