As the audience was settling in for an evening of entertainment in one of the swankiest nightclubs in the Midwest, a busboy approached the mic and asked everyone to exit the sprawling building. Soon, the place was engulfed. The May 28, 1977, fire at the Beverly Hills Supper Club was a deadly disaster that subsequent investigations found was not only preventable, but had been predicted, too. The lawsuits that followed changed the landscape of class-action litigation in America. Special thanks to friends and listeners Lizzie and Hayden for submitting the Beverly Hills Supper Club Fire episode as their Fan Favorite, and sharing insights for the new introduction. In addition, Ashley also weighs in on the conspiracy theory explored in “Forbidden Fruit: Sin City's Underworld and the Supper Club Inferno,” a book mentioned in the episode. (Originally aired 9/19/2023) It's the 3rd deadliest nightclub fire in US history and the reason you see a maximum capacity sign posted in every restaurant and bar you enter. Yet many have never heard of the horrific fire that ravaged the Beverly Hills Supper Club in May of 1977, killing 165 people and injuring 200. Known as the “Showplace of the Midwest,” the opulent, sprawling facility located in Southgate, Kentucky, not only offered event space, but also boasted wildly popular Vegas-style performers and acts. The evening of May 28, 1977, approximately 1200 people crowded into the cabaret room to see the legendary performer John Davidson, never dreaming their night would end in a nightmare of flames and toxic fumes. Join us as we revisit not only the circumstances behind the tragic Beverly Hills Supper Club Fire, but also the impact it had on fire safety codes and the mystery that still lingers. Many want to be greater followers of Jesus but don't know how. We extensively studied everything Jesus commanded of us and located five key targets to which Jesus invited His followers. The five targets are Being, Forgiving, Serving, Giving, and Going. In partnership with LifeWay Research, we created a Red Letter Challenge Assessment that will measure you according to these five targets. And the best news of all: it's free! You will receive your results immediately and be presented with the next steps to help you become an even greater follower of Jesus. You can take the FREE Red Letter Challenge Assessment here. 9/29/24 Fear is a manipulative tool that the enemy seeks to use to keep God's family from laying hold of their rightful inheritance. This week we look at several of the Biblical passages calling for courage in the face of fear as well as a a story where Jesus took His disciples through a very interactive lesson. We hope you dig it…

Great Northern Distilling (Stevens Point, WI) WF0032 Thanks to everyone taking part in our Instagram Craft Distillery Bracketology. Without you, I wouldn't have discovered so many great Wisconsin distilleries, including the one I'm visiting today in the heart of America's Dairyland, beer land, and now whiskey land. During our visit, we'll learn about what potatoes bring to vodka, the special ingredients that make a Wisconsin Old Fashioned unique, and dive into the concept of the Wisconsin supper club with Brian Cummings, Great Northern's founder. Plus on This Week in Whiskey Lore, we'll go back 130 years to the day Chicago went dry...at least in terms of distilling. To see Whiskey Lore's online distillery travel guide, head to whiskey-lore.com/travelguide and look for distilleries with headphone icons to find episodes of our Whiskey Flights.

The New York Times bestselling novelist J. Ryan Stradel tells host Rachel Belle it was “totally weird to be a teenage foodie in the 1990s.” He couldn't wait to get his driver's license so he could drive into the Twin Cities and eat at restaurants serving mysterious, flavorful, global food — a complete contrast to the bland dishes his parents cooked at home. Food plays a role in all three of Stradal's novels, all set in his home state of Minnesota: Kitchens of the Great Midwest, The Lager Queen of Minnesota and Saturday Night at the Lakeside Supper Club — supper clubs being a uniquely Midwestern throwback institution. Rachel chats with the owners of two multigenerational supper clubs, Lehman's and Ettlin's Ranchero, about what sets them apart from other restaurants.
