The festive season is meant to feel joyful, but what if instead it feels like you're behind frosted glass? You can see the lights, hear the laughter, even play the part — but inside you feel numb, separate and alone. In this episode of Fly to Freedom, I talk about the hidden loneliness and emotional disconnection that can show up during Christmas and how eating disorder recovery can amplify these feelings. I'll share why your nervous system creates this “glass box,” how numbness is a form of protection rather than failure, and why people-pleasing and perfectionism often feel louder at this time of year. You'll also learn how to spot the unspoken “rules” you've absorbed about how to show up, how to begin gently rewriting them, and what real self-compassion looks like in the moments you feel most disconnected. This episode is a gentle reminder that you are not broken, you are not failing, and you are not alone.✨ Inside you'll hear:Why numbness is a protective response, not a personal flaw. The role of perfectionism and performance in festive stress. How to dismantle the hidden “rules” that keep you stuck.Simple, honest ways to reconnect with yourself and others.A practice of self-compassion that helps you feel safe in your own body.

Welcome back to Dial Emma! Each week, I'll be answering your dilemmas with honesty, empathy, and a few therapeutic truth bombs to help you make sense of life's stickiest moments. If you've ever wished you had a therapist in your back pocket, Dial Emma is here to help. We're kicking off the festive season with a dilemma that sheds some light on the one family dynamic that doesn't always get the airtime: the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law relationship. To help me explore this topic in more depth, I'm joined by Dr. Tracy Dalgleish, a clinical psychologist and relationship expert who has also written a book, You, Your Husband & His Mother. In this week's dilemma, our listener shares her struggle with feeling like a guest in her own Christmas celebrations due to her mother-in-law's controlling nature, and her husband's tendency to revert back into childhood obedience and avoid 'causing drama' at all costs. We discuss the emotional challenges of navigating difficult family dynamics, particularly at this time of year, the importance of setting boundaries and how (and when!) to approach those conversations, and Tracy's 'Vault Method', which helps couples to communicate their values and needs effectively. Tracy also highlights the six types of mothers-in-law that she outlines in her book, offering some incredibly useful insights on how to approach family gatherings with compassion and understanding.Listen to our previous episode on the Drama Triangle.---If you have a dilemma for Emma, please fill out this form. ---Dial Emma is hosted by Emma Reed Turrell, produced by Lauren Brook.---Social media:Emma Reed Turrell @emmareedturrellDial Emma @dialemmapodcastEmail: contact@dial-emma.uk

O'come O'come Emmanuel used by permission. License agreement available on request. Performed by Skillet.,The conversation delves into the profound emotional landscape that envelops individuals during the holiday season, particularly those who find themselves grappling with grief. Dr. Jeffrey Skinner articulates the duality of sorrow and joy, stressing that it is entirely permissible for one to experience a sense of loss amidst the festive cheer. He draws upon biblical narratives to illustrate that even Jesus, in his humanity, bore witness to grief, as seen when he wept at Lazarus' tomb. This poignant reflection serves as a reminder that acknowledging our pain is not a sign of weakness, but rather a necessary step toward healing. As the episode unfolds, listeners are encouraged to embrace their emotions wholeheartedly, granting themselves the grace to mourn without the burden of guilt. In this spirit, Dr. Skinner outlines practical strategies for navigating the holiday season with an empty chair at the table, emphasizing the importance of ritual and remembrance as pathways to honor those we have lost.TakeawaysThe church should be a still small voice in the community.Grief can overshadow the holiday season, making it difficult to celebrate. It's important to give yourself permission to grieve during the holidays.Naming the absence of a loved one can help others feel comfortable sharing their grief.Creating rituals of remembrance can honor those who have passed.Asking for stories about the deceased can help keep their memory alive.Joy and sorrow can coexist during the holidays. The message of Christmas is about hope and resurrection.Advent reflects the longing and messiness of life. You are not alone in your grief; God is present in your sorrow

‘Tis the season of excess and, for many years, I would fall head-first into trays of canapés, tubs of chocolates and large bowls of steaming hot Christmas pudding and custard. It's the time of year when food is everywhere and it's as though we've been given license to loosen our belts and enjoy as much as possible. Which is fine, of course, unless you struggle with over-eating, binge-eating, weight management or just lose yourself in all the tantalising delights of festive far and find yourself feeling low, sluggish and regretful come January.I've come out of plenty of festive seasons many pounds heavier, feeling rubbish and ashamed that I couldn't just, well, stop. And yet, after completely recalibrating my relationship with food, I now enjoy it more than I ever did before. I know what I like, I know my indulgences and I also know what makes me feel good and what keeps me on track with my health and fitness goals. So, in this episode, I share how I'm approaching the festive season now that I'm someone who genuinely loves food, but no longer lets it control me. I talk about:why December used to be such a triggering month for methe cultural pressure to 'just have one more'choosing my indulgences instead of eating everything in sightwhy I eat before events (and how it stops that canapé chaos moment)dealing with food pushers at parties and family gatheringshow alcohol fits into all of thisnavigating the season with pleasure and boundarieshow I avoid that January shame spiralThis isn't about being good or restricting, it's about staying connected to yourself in a season designed to pull you away from your own instincts.Substack: The Emma Guns ShowInstagram: @emmagunsHey! In this Mini Micropedia, Mikki unpacks why holiday weight gain (often ~0.45–1.0 kg) tends to stick around and which habits most often tip us off track—overcommitting, grazing instead of meals, early “holiday mode,” and a bit too much booze. She lays out a practical plan: prioritise sleep, ring-fence training (and rack up NEAT—aim ~8,000+ steps), keep protein front and centre, and use calorie cycling with planned indulgences (hello, PSMF structure) to enjoy social events without spiralling. You'll learn simple boundary-setting scripts, environment hacks to reduce temptation, and mindset shifts—discipline over willpower, self-compassion over perfectionism—to carry you into January feeling calm, in control, and confident. Calorie cycling isn't a trick—it's stress management for your metabolism. In this Mini Micropedia, Mikki explains how sustained restriction can drive adaptive thermogenesis: leptin falls, ghrelin rises, thyroid output dips, NEAT declines, and fat loss stalls. Then she lays out practical cycling options—from simple weekday–weekend shifts to planned carb refeeds, diet breaks, and PSMF days—so you can periodise your intake around training and real life without blowing your deficit. You'll learn who benefits (and who shouldn't use it), why protein (≥1.6–2.2 g/kg) and resistance training are non-negotiables, and how to set your weekly calorie budget, distribute it across the week, and interpret scale bumps from glycogen and water. The goal: precision over punishment—an approach you can actually sustain.Don't miss Mikki's webinar “Fat Loss in the Festive Season” on Wednesday 29 October, running at 1:00 pm and 7:00 pm NZT.Episode HighlightsWhy adaptive thermogenesis makes continuous dieting harder (leptin ↓, ghrelin ↑, thyroid ↓, NEAT ↓).Calorie-cycling options: weekday–weekend shifts, strategic carb refeeds, diet breaks, PSMF; pros and cons.Non-negotiables: high protein (≥1.6–2.2 g/kg) and resistance training to protect lean mass. How to plan: set maintenance, choose a 15–25% weekly deficit, distribute low/high days around training and social life.Interpreting the scale: glycogen + water explain short-term weight spikes after high-carb days.
