It was psychologist Abraham Maslow who said "A first-rate soup is more creative than a second-rate painting." That was the starting point for my blog and this podcast. More than ever the world of work is a heady mix of people, behaviour, events and challenges. When the blend is right it can be first…

    Self-Esteem with Rich and Joe

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 9, 2022 50:44

Season 4 Episode 23 I'm delighted to be back to share part two of my chat with Dr Richard Bennett and Dr Joe Oliver - both clinical psychologists - both legends in their field- they joined me on the show to talk about self-esteem at work. We began by unpacking the concept that's so popular and Rich and Joe draw upon the evidence to illustrate how self esteem can be quite a narrow and restrictive concept. People might say - "I've got high self esteem" or "I've got low self esteem" and it can feel quite rigid and inflexible. It can limit our behaviour and impact our whole career and or life. The chaps present their alternative perspective of self-acceptance - which effectively captures the nuanced and multifaceted experience of being a human. Their approach has is set out in their book - The Mindfulness and Acceptance Workbook for Self-Esteem: Using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to Move Beyond Negative Self-Talk and Embrace Self-Compassion And in this episode - there's a treasure trove of insights and a tremendously generous take away. NOW - those with heightened noticing skills - may have spotted the gap between part one and part two being released. I'd like to thank everyone for their patience - fortunately I'm fully confident that your patience is about to be rewarded. The delay was a function of life - I've been working flat out on a mega project since March - designing and delivering coaching skills masterclasses to senior leaders in a global drinks company - needless to say - this has involved a heft dose of contextual behavioural science which has gone down a storm. It's also involved a lot of European travel. Coupled with that - we moved house in May - and we couldn't be happier with our new home - near Seville. It's just been a tad busy and I've felt a bit exhausted and - to use a Spanish word - a la deriva - which means adrift. I now growing roots and feeling established and plans are gently afoot for new guests and topics. I'm delighted to share part one of my chat with Dr Richard Bennett and Dr Joe Oliver - both clinical psychologists - both legends in their field. They joined me on the show to talk about self- esteem at work - and I spent the first part of the conversation inviting them to share a bit more about themselves and their career trajectories - and I'm mighty glad I did. I've attended several trainings with the Bennett-Olivers and also some solo gigs from each of them AND I learned so much more about them in this conversation. Both of them were very open and their career trajectories have had some quite pivotal moments, where they explored interesting, career change opportunities. It's yes to both of those scenarios for me and in my experience - there's a common theme which relates to the helping relationship. It's inspired by one of my cycling adventures, the work of Edgar Schein and a reflection from my friend and colleague, Rich Bennett. Season 4 Episode 18 - reissued from the People Soup archives This episode is revisiting a favourite conversation from the archives - my chat with Louise Gardner, my ACT Auntie, your ACT Auntie, our inspiration. Over the last few days I've been feeling a bit adrift and overwhelmed - the enormity of business planning, the complexity of my residency application, improving my Spanish. And as an aside, that's nothing to do with Blue Monday, which is a nonsense created by marketing folk. And I've also been trying to think of a topic for the next episode, my mind was all over the shop, lots of possibilities, so for inspiration I decided to listen back to my chat with Lou. Now that Lou is no longer with us - I miss her tremendously her fun, her love, her creativity, her courage, her energy. Many days when something absurd or bizarre happens I think, I'd love to tell Lou all about that, which I go ahead and do, in my head. I also told Lou about my award in her name - you can read more about the Louise Gardner Award in the show notes below. I'm so so proud to receive that award. Once I'd listened to Lou I felt hugged, inspired, sad and grateful. So I thought I'd share it with you too, in case it helps. Through People Soup I try to take a stand for what's possible at work, and show people how they can build that possibility for themselves. For me, what Lou illustrates and role models for us in this chat is her creative connection with her values which gave her direction. She also showed us the way she relates to her old friend, anxiety whilst courageously pursuing her purpose. I’m going to be having a go at exercising my creativity - experimenting with ways to illustrate my point, which is, that we all live inside our heads - and often - we can assume other people are in their with us - think like us and really ‘get us’. In my work and life I constantly marvel that workplaces can function, relationships can happen and agreements can be made, because I reckon we can spend a lot of time just assuming that people are thinking just like us. And what’s going on in someone else’s head - can shape how they look at and experience the world and how they show up. And the same applies to us. We check-in on a whole range of topics to support ourselves and each other in these challenging times. Topics include: * how our brains are processing the information that we're being bombarded with and why our caveman mind is on fire; * how our frontal lobe battery might also be getting drained; * how we can think about the response to coronavirus as a war, where we're all working together towards the same goal; * reminding ourselves of our own values in physical isolation - we're supporting the most vulnerable in society and those caring for them; * how we can encourage emotional connection during physical isolation; * how we can create routine and purpose; * how we can take this time to re-evaluate what's important. In 10 year's time will we look back and be proud of what we did during Covid19? We can certainly be proud of our physical distancing. Season 3 Episode 23 Hey P-Soupers! I wanted to present a simple and useful resource for these extraordinary times and I also bring a very special guest - my 84 year old Dad, Big G. We have a chat about Basic Psychological Needs Theory which states that people strive to satisfy three innate needs, namely autonomy, belonging and competence (in every area of life). * Autonomy - is about the need to feel that our pursuits are self governed and self endorsed. Or in other words, to feel we have control over what we do. * Belonging - is about being connected socially and feeling integrated into a social group. * Competence - is about the need to be effective in our efforts; so we feel like we're developing skills and gaining knowledge. Some researchers called Deci and Ryan assert that needs for competence, relatedness, and autonomy are universal – they are essential, regardless of culture and life domain (Deci and Ryan, 1985b, 2000; Ryan and Deci, 2002). Have a listen to hear how my Dad has been approaching his physical isolation and considering the ABC of Autonomy, Belonging and Competence. He's a role model for us all. I also consider the values for the podcast moving forward. We're going to be focusing on Compassion, Connection and Collaboration - consider our next episodes to be The 3Cs Chronicles. Season 3 Episode 22 It's Part 2 of my conversation with Dr Ian Tyndall. He's a cognitive-behavioural psychologist at the University of Chichester and is the head honcho of the Functional Behavioural Science Laboratory. In part two we delve into Ian’s research – we cover ostracism, SMART brain training for kids and adults which is fabulous work with enormous potential. It was also the subject of research by Dr Shane Mccloughlin who I'm hoping will be a future guest. There is such a breadth of content here as Ian goes on to reflect on measures in contextual behavioural science, some research exploring the experience of homeless people in Milan and their current work looking at the rise in sexually transmitted infection in the over 45s. Ian and his collaborators truly impact on society. He even makes reference to two films – There’s something about Mary and The Mask. And to top it all – there’s a cracking takeaway. Season 3 Episode 21 On Friday I had the great opportunity to visit the University of Chichester and speak to some of their Masters Students about ACT in the workplace and coaching. I was invited by Ian Tyndall, who is a cognitive behavioural psychologist and senior lecturer there, as well as running the Functional Behavioural Science Laboratory. Of course I was keen to grab Ian as a guest and the conversation was fabulous. He's such a warm and generous man and can tell a story like no other. Listen on to hear more about: * why he would have never predicted a career which involved speaking in public, something that he now loves, * his exploration of how language impacts anxiety and our response to stressful events, * a pivotal moment about his interview at the University of Chichester, * and a moment when he experienced a difficult performance review. We conclude Part 1 with Ian reflecting on the importance of being kind and compassionate in our collaborations with each other - and with ourselves. Season 3 Episode 20 It's another 'on the road' recording. What do Flaxintosh do on the road? I’d come across a poem that I wanted to share with Paul – we often use poetry in our training – this one was a magnificent metaphor-laden masterpiece by David Whyte – in turn – later in the evening, Paul shared his favourite poem over dinner. That’s what real men do when they gather – forget the hunter gatherer – we read poetry to each other. #realmensharepoemsinpubs Both poems fit so nicely with the theme that is fundamental to our training – the skill of noticing. Season 3 Episode 19 Have you ever felt stuck? Writer's block, the blank page, starting a new exercise or diet regime? In this short episode I share my experience of restarting the podcast after our mid-season break in January. I found my mind was producing loads of content which hooked me away from getting back behind the mic, so thought I'd share my experience and use the matrix, to help me sort the jumble in my mind and get some clarity to help me move forward. This will form part of an occasional series - #thematrixsessions - where I and others will use the matrix on an issue or area of life. Season 3 Episode 18 P-Soupers - it's the second part of our festive special and have I got a treat for you. Have a listen to my conversation with Dr Dayna Lee-Baggley. Dayna is a Registered Clinical Psychologist. She holds an Assistant Professor appointment in the Department of Family Medicine and cross-appointments in the Department of Surgery and the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at Dalhousie University and an Adjunct Professor appointment in the Department of Industrial and Organizational Psychology at Saint Mary’s University. Dayna also works as a Clinical Health Psychologist at the Nova Scotia Health Authority (CentralZone) for the Multi Organ Transplant Program and as a Trainer and Researcher of the Behaviour Change Institute. Listen on as we hear about the time when Dayna discovered Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and how she applied it in her own life. Dayna also has some great advice for those of us considering behaviour change in the new year, spoiler alert, a lot of those goals we set are actually outcomes. She also busts the myth about the time it takes to form a habit and explains the difference between our cave dweller mind and our frontal lobe. This is the reason that our healthy habits can fall away at holiday time because we're using our frontal lobe too much and our cave dweller mind can just step in and take over when we’re surrounded by a family sized tin quality street and crisps. This episode is packed with top tips and insights from Dayna's work. Dayna has great skill in translating research knowledge into things that people can do in their day to day lives to reduce suffering and increase joy.
