Leadership is a key quality that all doctors need to posses. But sometime it is challenging to lead in a way that sits comfortably with you, whilst accepting the external reality. In this podcast, Ross tells me that authentic leadership is about specifically choosing the best response for a situation, based on what matters to each person as an individual. We talk about values, psychological flexibility, and he shares his top tips.Ross is an organisational and coaching psychologist. As a practitioner, he uses evidence-based psychology in all areas of his portfolio career. In his research role at City, University of London, he works alongside Dr Paul Flaxman in an academic/practitioner partnership where they design and deliver ACT Workplace Training for both the public and private sector. He also lectures in organisational psychology at City, University of London and Birkbeck. Nine years ago, he founded the start-up, People Soup, which aims to cultivate well-being, adaptability, meaningful action and awareness in organisations. He has designed and delivered evidence-based training to over 23 NHS Trusts, HM Treasury, Nectar Loyalty, teachers, a global tech company, a global drinks company, hedge fund managers and a variety of ballet companies and independent dancers. Prior to his portfolio career, he spent over 20 years in Senior HR roles in the UK Civil Service. He has a BSc (Hons) in psychology from the University of Dundee and Masters degrees in Human Resource Management and Organisational Psychology. He's a Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development (CIPD), the Association for Coaching and the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA). Season 4 Episode 22 Hi there and a very warm welcome to Season 4 Episode 22 of People Soup. I'm delighted to share part one of my chat with Dr Richard Bennett and Dr Joe Oliver - both clinical psychologists - both legends in their field. They joined me on the show to talk about self- esteem at work - and I spent the first part of the conversation inviting them to share a bit more about themselves and their career trajectories - and I'm mighty glad I did. I've attended several trainings with the Bennett-Olivers and also some solo gigs from each of them AND I learned so much more about them in this conversation. Both of them were very open and their career trajectories have had some quite pivotal moments, where they explored interesting, career change opportunities. We also hear about their stance towards training delivery and of, course - their song choices. Season 4 Episode 19 Hi there and a very warm welcome to Season 4 Episode 19 of People Soup. Yes I'm back - after an unexpected break due to catching Covid, which knocked me out for a few weeks. This episode a new type of episode - one aimed more at those who are workplace trainers or facilitators support adults in the development of new skills. It's a short cup/a/soup called Helping. Equally, it could be useful for anyone contemplating the helping relationship. Have you ever had the misfortune to fall over in public or witness somebody else taking a tumble. It's yes to both of those scenarios for me and in my experience - there's a common theme which relates to the helping relationship. It's inspired by one of my cycling adventures, the work of Edgar Schein and a reflection from my friend and colleague, Rich Bennett. Facilitators and trainers - I'd love to get your feedback on this episode - does this resonate with you and your experience? Would you like to see more episodes like this? We also have an interview with Ross McIntosh, presenter of the ‘People Soup’ podcast, who describes his career journey to date, as well as how he trains professionals in the skills of psych flex.    Do get in touch with all your questions and comments - we love to hear from our listeners - either via Twitter (@MyPocketPsych) or the online contact form (worklifepsych.com/contact).    Resources mentioned in this episode Ross McIntosh online ‘People Soup’ podcast Psychological Flexibility overview

Season 3 Episode 11 Welcome one and all. It's another first for People Soup - a recording on the road. In this episode you'll hear me and my ACT pal - Dr Paul Flaxman, on the way to a meeting with some NHS legends up in Northumberland. We chat on a train and a hotel lobby in Newcastle. I work with Paul at City, University of London where we have redeveloped and refined a training protocol for Psychological Well-being in the Workplace. The training has a strong evidence base and we've spent time over the last year delivering Training for Trainers, to enable the protocol to be shared more widely and reach more people. It's like a Flaxintosh performance review. We cover some of the gigs we've done this year, how the ACT in the Workplace training protocol has evolved and key moments & developments that have stuck in our minds. Bonus Episode! Consider this a bridge to Season 3 of People Soup. As there's been a natural break I've decided it's the ideal time to launch a new season. I talk about the death of my beloved Mum and preview some of the guests I've got lined up for Season 3. The first one will drop next week - an interview with Dr Guy Meadows - co-founder and clinical director of The Sleep School.

Freaking the F Out is a podcast where Kelsey Bennett and Maddy Scott examine the inner workings of their anxious minds.  Covering everything from the minute to the very big and life changing, they’re not mental health professionals but they do happen to have some experience in the field. This week's episode is a little different.  It's a mashup with the podcast People Soup, which was recorded as a live fringe event at the recent Brighton Podcast Festival.  Unfortunately Kelsey couldn't leave the M25 area so missed this episode, but Maddy spoke to Ross McIntosh - an organisational psychologist and coach - about Imposter Syndrome.  What is it? What's the origin of the term? What are our own experiences of feeling it? And, perhaps most importantly, what can we do about it? Ross is a 'global expert' in using Acceptance & Commitment Therapy in the workplace (although as he explains in this episode, that introduction makes him feel very uncomfortable) but he talked the audience through some exercises that can help you notice your imposter syndrome when it pops up.   Contact: Email:ftfopod@gmail.com Twitter: @ftfopod Instagram: @ftfopod Facebook: Freaking the F Out People Soup: Twitter @PeopleSoupPod    Instagram: people.soup    Website: peoplesoup.co Artwork by Chris Hastings-Spital (@chrismhs)

We cover a lot of ground in this conversation including: Mike's journey into ACT - which included a bold trip to Nevada in the early days; How he uses ACT in his personal and professional life; How he uses ACT with high performers in the City. He has also developed a takeaway especially for his appearance on People Soup and has a cracking, client generated metaphor which we could all use. Show notes at www.rossmcintosh.co.uk

Exploring values with Jonny Line

Season 2 Episode 2 In this episode I speak to my friend, Jonny Line, who is an exciting new voice in organisational psychology. Jonny begins by reflecting on a particular skill that he draws upon in a variety of scenarios at work and then considers his own experience of using Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT). He describes the three step approach he has developed to support himself in noticing when he's expressed his core values of self development, creativity, fairness and supportiveness. He also sets out a way in which we can potentially enhance our efficacy in expressing what's important through turning our values on ourselves, based upon a model of positive social action. The challenge from Jonny is "how can you live out your values with others by turning them in on yourself." Jonny's ideas have taken my own practise to a new level so I'd really encourage you to have a go. We also consider what our own personal theme tunes might be and there is a chance to win one of three sets of values cards. We're so proud of this episode here at People Soup - it really brings together some of our values around the creation of the podcast, which include being of service to our listeners and guests, and creating a space of connection, friendship, love, learning and fun.
