Send us a textVanderhoof, British Columbia—a picturesque town surrounded by dense forests and rugged terrain. It's a place where life moves at a steady, familiar pace and where everyone seems to know each other. But in May 2011, the close-knit community was shaken by the disappearance of a young woman whose vibrant personality and adventurous spirit were the heart of those who knew her.Madison Scott, or Maddy as her loved ones called her, was born on April 29, 1991, to Eldon and Dawn Scott. Growing up alongside her siblings Ben and Georgia, Maddy's life was filled with love, laughter, and a healthy dose of adventure. She was a force of nature, just as comfortable in a dress as she was in her work coveralls. Whether she was tearing through the trails on her dirt bike or gliding gracefully across the ice as a figure skater, Maddy embraced life with boundless energy. She thrived on spontaneity, often planning impromptu adventures or performing in amateur video productions with her friends. Her vivacious, playful personality was magnetic—she lit up every room she entered. But Maddy wasn't just about fun. She had a compassionate and generous heart, always willing to lend a hand or bring a smile to someone's face.At Nechako Valley Secondary School, Maddy struck a delicate balance between academics and her vibrant social life. While she was more focused on forging friendships and savoring her teenage years, she still met the demands of her studies. After graduating in 2009, she followed in her father's footsteps, working as an apprentice heavy-duty mechanic in the logging industry—a testament to her determination and grit. But for all her light and energy, Maddy's story took a dark and inexplicable turn. It was a weekend that was supposed to be filled with laughter, celebration, and friends. Late May in British Columbia marked the start of camping season, a time when locals would gather at places like Hogsback Lake to soak in the beauty of nature. For Madison Scott, or Maddy as her friends and family called her, the weekend of May 27th, 2011, would be one to remember—but not in the way anyone expected.Support the show

This episode is going to take us to Hogsback Lake, a sort of natural recreation area southeast of Vanderhoof, British Columbia. Although the area is known by locals as an ideal spot for camping and fishing, it has also become known as the setting for one of Canada's most often discussed missing person cases. On May 28, 2011, then 20 year old Maddy Scott attended an annual party at Hogsback Lake. Maddy and her friend Jordi intended to camp out at the lake together but unexpected attendees and alcohol would lead to Maddy being left behind to camp alone. The next morning the only thing found at the lake was Maddy's truck and an empty tent. Over the past 12 years the search for Maddy would receive international attention and a ravenous online following despite very little in the way of clues or developments but that all changed just last week and dramatically so. In this episode I'm joined by Madelayne Kline to discuss the disappearance and death of Maddy Scott. It's the 60s, and free love is all around. Everything is groovy, and when you hear about some fun young people living communally on the upper west side, you think 'how bad could it be?' The answer, my friends, is very very bad. This week we learn all about a creepy New York sex cult that existed from the 60s all the way through to the early 90s! And neither of us had ever heard about it until this week?! The Sullivanians founded an 'institute' and provided 'therapy' to hundreds of people during their tenure as the reigning psychotherapeutic sex cult of the city.  It's wild, it's scary, and we're just hoping it doesn't exist anymore so they won't put a hit out on us. Once we're thoroughly creeped out, Elise comes to the rescue with something lemony and sweet. Join us for this strange and paranoid adventure through the Sullivanian institute.

On May 28th, 2011, twenty-year-old Madison Geraldine Scott or Maddy, attended a birthday party at Hogsback Lake approx. 25 km southeast of Vanderhoof, British Columbia. Maddy had attended the party with her friend Jordi Bolduc. But as the evening went on and turned to midnight, Maddy retired for the night to tent she pitched beside her 1990 white Ford F150 pick up truck. A fight had broken between Jordi and a few other men at the party out and left Jodi injured and as she was drunk also felt she needed to leave with her new boyfriend. After trying to talk Maddy into leaving with them it was clear Maddy didn’t want to get up as she was already settled in for the night, Jordi left. Between the hours of 3 am and 4 am, many of the party goers had left, and these being some of the last people to physically see the young woman, many had reported talking to her and even offering her a ride back but Maddy declined. At 8:30 am Jordi and her boyfriend returned to the campsite as she had to pick up her clothes and sleeping bag before going to work. Having arrived, Jordi noticed the tent unzipped with Maddy’s sleeping bag and stuff moved to the side but with Maddy nowhere to be seen. Jordi stated she did not see Maddy anywhere and never reported the state of the tent to anyone. With a party of over 50 people attending, a large frame of missing time and the trail getting colder by the minute, an investigation will be launched using some of the most investigative tools than have been used in a case before in BC history and theories involving the purposed Highway of Tears and even serial killer Israel Keyes, today we look into the unexpected and truly baffling disappearance of Maddy Scott. Break ups can be the WORST. The person you probably spent the most amount of time with is now...well...(not to quote Gotye but)...basically somebody that you used to know.  It's weird.  But is it worse and weirder if you're the 'breaker up-er' or the 'breaker up-ee'? Do your emotions differ depending on the age you are? Does it make it easier depending on the reason you've ended things? And what happens next - do you surround yourself with friends or like to deal with things solo? And what happens if you see an ex out in the wild? Ultimately, it’s really weird and most of the time you’ll have a better time staying home and watching TV in your trackies.  But sometimes you’ve got to take a chance, so strap yourself in for a discussion about the perils of online dating, going for unavailable, beardy hipsters and mutual ghosting.  This is the low down on our particular anxieties from the dating world.

This week's episode is all about MONEY! Mortgages, savings, pensions, debt...the list of things to worry about just goes on. Not to mention the emotional side of it all - we're secretive about our salaries and our savings. No wonder we sometimes just go out and blow too much of it on a big spending spree. Luckily, there is a very clever guest on to help with all this muddle. Laura Whateley is a money journalist and author of the fantastic book 'Money: A User's Guide'.
