In 1971, in the quiet town of Hexham, England, two small stone heads were unearthed — and with them, a series of strange and unsettling events began to unfold. Shadows moved where none should be, and visitors spoke of an unseen presence lingering in the air. Were the heads simple curiosities, ancient artifacts, or did they hold a deeper, forgotten power? Or were they simply modern toys, made by a doting father looking to entertain his young daughter? As questions grew and answers slipped further away, the mystery of the Hexham Heads only deepened, and then one day, they simply vanished, never to be seen or heard from again.SOURCES Screeton, Paul (2012) Quest for the Hexham Heads. The mysterious Hexham Heads, just what are these things besides heads? Do they hold a demon? Poltergiest activity is associated with them but there could be other explanations for that. Werewolf like creatures have been spotted when they are around. This one starts out a little slow but we do go off on our tangents as usual.Tonight we're drinking beer and wine. Nothing special.

We meet painter Vanessa Raw to discuss her solo show at the Rubell Museum Miami, where she was the 2024 Artist-in-Residence. Vanessa Raw: This is How the Light Gets In marks her first exhibition in the United States, as well as her first institutional show. In these newly commissioned, large-scale works, Raw's distinctive layered brushwork and expressive use of colour depict a dream-like, all-female world—an earthly paradise where the natural world is benevolent and sentient, and where female desire is central. A former triathlete, Raw's practiced mastery of her own body transfers to her work on canvas. Her figures are tranquil and at ease but have agency. They revel in the company of each other and in the landscape that is lush and soft and ripe with colour—paradise found. In 2022 Raw took a radical new direction with her work, shifting from traditional portraiture tropes to paint imagined, same-sex, intimate scenes of women in confected landscapes. Surrounded by flowers and trees, sometimes accompanied by fauna too, these suspended moments of blissful intense connections show naked, energised bodies part-merged with each other and the landscapes they are in.Using a heighten palette Raw conveys the intensity of the moment, as well positioning the paintings in the realm of the imaginary. Likewise, the dream-like fluidity of some areas of mark making suggest an altered state of consciousness, a deep human connectivity occurring simultaneously on a physical and spiritual plane. Photographs taken on her daily runs through local nature areas, an activity undertaken with therapeutical escapist intention, are used as source material for her background landscapes binding their confection to meaningful actualities, pulling into the paintings the remembered feeling of oneness with nature.Raw works in a semi-naturalistic style, with an intense focus on the textures of the human form. Her large scale paintings are an eclectic variety of tonal compositions, vibrant and stimulating. Some of her more explicit pieces show the human body engaged in sexual acts or reaching the point of orgasm, whilst others in a more subtle manner showcase the innate sexuality of the feminine form.Born in 1984 in Hexham, England, Raw lives and works in Margate, UK. Where do we go for fun? Well, all kinds of places, but fish hatcheries, farm shows, and livestock auctions are on the list. Today, we're taking you back to jolly old England (almost Scotland, actually), to a little town called Hexham. It lies at the foot of Northumberland National Park and a stone's throw (literally) from Hadrian's Wall. This is as charming a hamlet as you might ever imagine. It has lovely bridges, excellent tapas, wonderfully kind people, a first-class auction yard, and mules.Wait – aren't we talking sheep today? What's all this about mules?Yep – mules -- that are technically sheep. Listen in to Drew Patrick and Chris Armstrong, master auctioneers at Hexham and Northern Marts, to find out why some of these sheep are mules. And Hexham is in the Borderlands, so some sheep also look like rabbits – but that's another podcast. There's a definite 'back to school' feeling in the air in politics this week. The news agenda is already being dominated by the issues that we're going to be hearing about again and again in the coming months - small boats, the housing crisis and the ravaged state of the public finances. It's back to school for the North's politicians too, and with Westminster resuming after the summer break this week a new Labour MP, Hexham's Joe Morris, is leading not one but two debates in the Commons and has been telling his fellow MPs about the banking deserts that are worrying locals in his huge Northumberland constituency. He explains to Rob Parsons how he's been trying to fight for voters in an area that voted Tory for 100 years. Up in York this week, the North's political leaders have their own big event, launching the so-called manifesto for the North, a document setting out how the likes of Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham and other elected leaders can work together to help our region thrive. And with perfect timing, a new report put together by Northern academics and experts sets out all too clearly just how badly half of our population is being let down by just how unequal our country is, from the moment they're born to the day they die. Rob speaks to Professor Kate Pickett, one of the authors of a new very hard-hitting report ‘Woman of the North: Inequality, health and work', which finds that women in the North of England live shorter lives, work more hours for less pay, are more likely to be an unpaid carer, and more likely to live in poverty than women in other regions of England. Seventy seven year old Judith Richardson lived in Hexham in the north of England. Judith was often seen out and about in the town walking her beloved pet dog Hamish a West Highland Terrier. and was well known for her love of organ recitals at the Abbey. One day when her bag turned up in Newcastle, 20 miles from her home, it was handed in to police who arrived at her home to return the bag. Knocking on Judith's door brought about no response. There was no sign of a forced entry to the property, but something did not feel quite right. Deciding to force entry into the property, the officers were stunned to discover the body of Judith Richardson lying dead in her hallway. Just who would possibly have wanted to kill Judith? In 1971, two young boys named Colin and Leslie Robson unearthed a pair of uncanny stone heads from the garden behind their home. After this unsettling discovery, the family began to experience unexplainable occurrences. Witnesses claim that the carved heads would inexplicably change positions when no one was present, and objects would hurl through the air as if controlled by an unseen force. The terror did not end there, as their neighbors also reported spine-chilling incidents such as hair being pulled in the dead of night and the appearance of a grotesque creature lurking about their home. This small suburban community would become gripped with fear, unsure of what sinister entity may be responsible for these unearthly events. In a quaint corner of Northern England, a discovery was made that would send shockwaves through the world of the paranormal and beyond. Two young boys stumbled upon a pair of mysterious stone heads in their own backyard, objects that could not be accounted for by any known means. The eerie expressions carved upon these tiny heads, no larger than their small fists, were a source of fascination for the boys and the entire community. The press soon dubbed these mysterious objects the "Hexham Heads," and what followed was a series of events that defied explanation and left experts from multiple fields - including museums, archaeologists, geologists, and the media - scratching their heads in wonder. This discovery was only the beginning of a journey into the unknown, where truth and fantasy are forever intertwined.
Our summer ‘At the Foot of the Cross’ is very much a pilgrimage podcast. So whether you’re staying at home or travelling abroad, there’s always time to walk with the Lord and deepen your faith. Canon Chris Thomas, General Secretary here at the Bishops’ Conference, joins us to welcome a newly-installed Bishop for Hexham and […]
The Archbishop of Liverpool, Malcolm McMahon, took charge of the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle following the resignation of Bishop Robert Byrne who stepped down due to serious failures of leadership in child protection. In this podcast, the archbishop speaks for the first time about the problems in the diocese, the changes he has sought to introduce and the importance of the synod process or better church governance. Among the questions for discussion at the synod summit in the Vatican in October is how bishops can exercise their ministry in a way that includes more voices, including women. Bishop Byrne was accused of failing to listen to the advice of his (female) safeguarding adviser, along with multiple failures of governance. “I think there was a fundamental problem about governance within the diocese. The authority within the diocese was really centred on a few priests who had several roles. There was no real distribution of authority within the church structures,” the archbishop told me. The archbishop apologised to all those affected by the problems in Hexham and Newcastle — which was the subject of numerous inquiries — saying the events in the diocese had been “very hurtful and painful for people.” He stressed, however, that measures had been taken to help heal the damage, including ensuring that the charitable trust which governs the diocese as a civil entity has an equal number of lay and clergy trustees. The diocese in the north of England, home to the northern saints that converted people to Christianity in the seventh and eighth centuries, is seeking to open a new chapter with the appointment of Stephen Wright as its new bishop. In a powerful and prophetic symbol, the installation ceremony saw Bishop Wright receive prayer ribbons from abuse survivors that were tied to his episcopal chair. One of them, Maggie Matthews, then spoke about abuse in the Church including the “structures” that lead to it. Archbishop McMahon said he believed the Church's synod process points the “way forward” and spoke about the synod that had taken place in Liverpool diocese. He said it led him to introduce a new advisory council of lay people and priests strongly emphasising social action. He said a “revolution” in the Church would come about when the structures in the Church are populated with people who have become “synodal”, meaning they can listen, discern and encourage greater participation among Catholics. During the interview, the Dominican archbishop said the synod could open the door to the ordination of married men, female deacons and greater inclusion of same-sex couples. “We have to be open to change in the future, whether it's in ministry or whether it's in the way people live their lives together,” he said. “We are working out of different frameworks of morality to the ones which are current now.” The challenge, he said, is “not to keep saying ‘we are right, and we've got this correct', but we need to listen and discern more deeply about so many aspects of people's everyday lives.” He saw no “theological impediment” to changing the discipline of ordaining married men as priests, and neither are there “too many obstacles” to female deacons. On same-sex couples, he said he had “always included gay people in the life of the parish” as a priest and that “personal actions or morality” should be left to “the spiritual adviser, confessor.” The archbishop also suggested that lay people be given a stronger voice in appointing bishops, and there “should be a method of gathering together the people's thoughts within a diocese when a vacancy becomes apparent.” The appointment of bishops, including more “participatory selection procedures”, is on the agenda for the October assembly. The Church's Radical Reform podcast series is sponsored by the Centre for Catholic Studies at the University of Durham in partnership with The Tablet. Producer: Silvia Sacco Editor: Jamie Weston

Archbishop McMahon said he believed the Church's synod process points the “way forward” and spoke about the synod that had taken place in Liverpool diocese. He said it led him to introduce a new advisory council of lay people and priests, emphasising social action. Saint John of Beverley was from the Yorkshire region of England. He was Bishop of Hexham in 687–705, and the Bishop of York in 718-721. He was known for his miracle-working, both in life and and after his death. His intercession was thought to have been responsible for many English military successes - most notably, King Henry V attributed his famous victory over the French at Agincourt to Saint John, and made a pilgrimage to his resting place at Beverley soon a few years after the battle.

In late spring of 1971, two brothers Colin and Leslie Robson, were playing in their garden. As they played and looked for things to throw they began to dig in the dirt - and found something that seemed both interesting and strange. The boys had dug up 2 small heads carved in stone. Roughly the size of an orange or tennis ball. The stone heads had flecks of greenish-grey and glistened with quartz crystals. The heads seemed to be carved of local stone, and had irregularly shaped features, holes for the mouth and eyes, ridges for the nose, and they were not identical. Fascinated by the mysterious treasure they had found…they decided to keep them. Little did they know all the strange things that would happen from then on… This is the story of The Hexham Heads. Thank you so much for listening - BE RAD! SHOW INFO
In this 50th episode of A brush with…, Ben Luke talks to Glenn Brown about his influences—from writers to film-makers, musicians and, of course, artists—and the cultural experiences that have shaped his life and work. Brown (born in Hexham, UK, in 1966) takes reproductions of other artists' works—including those by Old Masters, the greats of Modern art and science-fiction illustrators—and transforms them by changing their colour, orientation and size. It leads to paintings, drawings and sculptures that are often grotesque and macabre but always strangely enticing and resonant. He discusses his early love of the art of horror and fantasy, his ongoing fascination with Salvador Dalí, his admiration for artists as diverse as Hendrick Goltzius and Maria Lassnig, the impact of Andrei Tarkovsky's films, the writing of T.S. Eliot and Samuel Beckett, and how growing up during the Cold War influenced the music he listened to and the art he makes today. Plus, he gives intimate insight into his working life and answers our usual questions, including “What is art for?”.Glenn Brown: We'll Keep On Dancing Till We Pay the Rent, Gagosian, West 24th Street, New York, 10 November-23 December; Things: A History of Still Life Since Prehistoric Times, Musée du Louvre, Paris, 13 October-23 January 2023; Glenn Brown: The Real Thing, Landesmuseum and Sprengel Museum, Hannover, Germany, 23 February-24 June 2023; The Brown Collection, Brown's museum of his own work, opens in Bentinck Mews, Marylebone, London, in October 2022.
