This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE In the quiet farm fields of rural Nebraska, a 120-year-old house stood seemingly ordinary—until something hidden beneath it was uncovered. When the home's new owner discovered a strange wooden box tucked away in the cellar, its contents raised immediate questions. Inside were unsettling items: part of an unfamiliar book, a piece of coal, and a doll unlike anything he'd seen before. Unsure of what he was dealing with, he reached out to paranormal investigators Alan Megargle and Jesse Morgan. What began as a simple investigation quickly grew into something far more disturbing. That discovery became the foundation for the documentary A Haunting in Blue Hill, which follows a team of investigators as they explore the origins of the box and the spirits seemingly tied to it—and to the home itself. As communication begins, it becomes clear that the objects were not random, and the cellar was not chosen by accident. Today on The Grave Talks, we sit down with directors Alan Megargle and Jesse Morgan, along with team members Anna Meyer Evans and Madison Flewelling, to discuss the film, the investigation, and what happens when the past is quite literally unearthed. Our Corman Graduates series on exploitation filmmaker Jack Hill continues as we move on from Jack's American International Pictures days of COFFY and FOXY BROWN and move on to the next phase of his career, which gets a little help from Corman's New World Pictures staff, as he moves on to 1974's THE SWINGING CHEERLEADERS and 1975's SWITCHBLADE SISTERS. Joining us to discuss the worlds of undercover college journalism and female gangs is none of than author and film historian Nathaniel Thompson of Mondo-Digital.com! Nathaniel shares his love of Jack Hill with us, including stories about seeing his films in theaters, his theories on Jack Hill's career, and whether SWITCHBLADE SISTERS was indeed adapted from Shakespeare's Othello. Why did Jack leave AIP? How did these two movies come about? Is THE SWINGING CHEERLEADERS a comedy? How did New World have a part (if any) in these movies? We do our best to answer these questions and celebrate the exploitation madness that is Jack Hill. To buy Nathaniel's book, The FrightFest Guide to Vampire Movies, head here. We continue our series on exploitation filmmaker Jack Hill with special guest Odie Henderson, columnist for the Boston Globe and author of Black Caesars and Foxy Cleopatras. In this episode, we move out from Jack's New World era to his AIP era with 1973's COFFY and 1974's FOXY BROWN, two of Hill's biggest hits. They were also big hits for star Pam Grier, who had already worked with Hill in his New World films, but was now playing the titular character in both films. In COFFY, Grier plays a woman seeking revenge on the drug dealers that got her sisters addicted to drugs, while FOXY BROWN is about, well, a lot of things, including infiltrating a prostitution ring run by Grier's BIG DOLL HOUSE co-star Kathryn Loder. Expect a wide-ranging conversation that covers New World, blaxploitation films, even Indiana Jones! Which film was Jack's favorite? How did Jack nearly lose the opportunity to direct FOXY BROWN? Was COFFY written for Pam or someone else? We dive in deep, with the help of Odie's infinite expertise, and provide the answers! (Please note, this was recorded before the tragic passing of TRUCK TURNER director - and Corman Graduate - Jonathan Kaplan. Our condolences go out to his family and friends.) To buy Odie's book, head here. For all the shows in Someone's Favorite Productions Podcast Network, head here: https://www.someonesfavoriteproductions.com/
Listen to the final episode in our three-part series exploring the music of Gilbert “Honey” Hill, an important Indianapolis blues pianist. Gilbert “Honey” Hill was born in Indianapolis on January 8, 1912. His parents, Frank and Emma Hill migrated to Indiana from Kentucky. Hill spent much of his childhood living on the city's Eastside, including an address at 1508 Yandes Street. Hill lived in Indianapolis until his death in 1953. On this edition, we'll focus on Hill's final recordings with Little Bill Gaither. From 1936 to 1940, he recorded over 70 songs with Gaither. Listen to an hour of classic blues recordings featuring Hill and Gaither.
This is the second episode in our three-part series exploring the music of of Gilbert “Honey” Hill, an important Indianapolis blues pianist. Hill was born in Indianapolis in 1912, and lived in the city until his death in 1953. On this edition, we'll focus on Hill's work with the blues star Bumble Bee Slim, they cut over 25 songs together for Decca Records during the summer of 1936. The guitarist and vocalist, Bumble Bee Slim, was born Amos Easton in Brunswick, Georgia in 1905. By the late 1920s, it's speculated that Slim was living in Indianapolis, where he met the Naptown blues greats Leroy Carr and Scrapper Blackwell. It's likely that Slim met Honey Hill around this time.
In our continuing series on exploitation filmmaker Jack Hill, director Elijah Drenner (THAT GUY DICK MILLER, AMERICAN GRINDHOUSE) joins us to discuss Jack's women-in-prison films he made for Roger Corman's New World Pictures: THE BIG DOLL HOUSE and THE BIG BIRD CAGE. With 20 years of experience making featurettes and extras for Blu-rays and DVDs (including the one included on THE BIG DOLL HOSE disc), Elijah has an unique perspective into these films and Jack's career, having been able to interview him several times for various releases of Hill's films. Elijah talks about his love for Jack's films, as well as what he thinks is the perfect women-in-prison film, and the difficulty of trying to get the story behind the story of the films we all love. This episode is not only a celebration of Jack Hill's career, but also of the importance of these behind-the-scenes extras and the context they bring to film history. As physical media lovers ourselves, it was a joy to talk to Elijah about his work and career, and the man we are trying to learn about through this chronological dive into his filmography, Jack Hill. Chris and Tracy continue their conversation with Pastor Randy Hill. Randy served in production and business for many years, and he know continues working in pastoral ministry. Through his seasons of morning and grieving, joy and pain in ministry, seeking God and obeying the Father, Randy knows about death and sadness while also knowing the miracles of God. His story is so needed in today's world of leadership. Hear his desire to follow Jesus. Even during pain, we can lead while following Jesus. In this episode, Randy emphasizes the importance of knowing why we are here. God has plans for each of us. We should learn what we are called and empowered to do. We are to "go after" that vocation—whatever it is—empowered by God. We are to serve as partners with the Holy Spirit. What can we do this week to help people encounter God? How can we help those around us smile? We are so often seeking to control our church services that we fail to allow time for God. As leaders, let us lead others to the altar. Believe God is at work in us and in those we lead. Welcome God's plan for each of us. https://www.gtchurch.net/staff/pastor-randy-bonnie-hill/https://www.facebook.com/jrandyhillministries
Randy Hill serves as a pastor, seeking to make a positive difference in the lives of other people. Randy also serves in denominational leadership. Through his years of pastoring, Randy has learned many lessons. Tracy and Chris enjoyed hearing Randy's story of growing up in church and seeing many miracles. Do we still believe in miracles? If so, why? If not, why? As a young child Randy traveled with his father who was leading revivals--his dad was also training Randy for ministry. Randy knew when he was young that the Lord had called him to preach. Even when he wasn't living as he should, he knew. Through the years he has learned many lessons of how to not do ministry. Like many people, he saw the hypocrisy. Like many people, he was looking for reasons to stay out of ministry. He worked for a ministry while trying to stay out of a preaching vocation. Through God's miracles and reminders, Randy said yes to the Lord. Listen to his reluctance and his obedience. Listen to his heart for God and people. Listen to the sadness of his wife passing away. Listen to hope amid the sadness. Learn what ministry can be like from Randy's perspective. https://www.gtchurch.net/staff/pastor-randy-bonnie-hill/https://www.facebook.com/jrandyhillministries
For our second episode in the "Corman Graduates: Jack Hill" series, we talk with director, writer and cinematography, Elle Schneider (THE FOOD THAT BUILT AMERICA, PLEDGE NIGHT: AN INTERVIEW WITH ROGER CORMAN, BLISS BLUE, THAT GUY DICK MILLER), about Jack Hill's MONDO KEYHOLE and PIT STOP. In addition to being friends with Dick Miller and interviewing Jack Hill and Roger Corman on multiple occasions, she is a huge fan of PIT STOP. She brings an technical perspective on both of the films that you won't find anywhere else. First, we talk about MONDO KEYHOLE. We discuss the history and legal challenges with making "Nudie Cuties" and "Roughies" films during the 1960s and how that impacted the distribution of MONDO KEYHOLE. We talk about how Jack Hill got involved with movie, the unique approach he took to casting and filming the movie and the fact that it had to play in adult theaters upon it's initial release. Next, we dive into fan favorite, PIT STOP - one of Jack Hill's most impressive films. We talk about the struggle the movie faced trying to get an audience in an era when black and white films were going out of vogue in the drive-in circuit. We share mutual appreciation for Sid Haig's emotional performance - one that is unique to his filmography. Finally, we discuss the filming approach by cinematographer, Austin McKinney and the unfortunate rift with Jack Hill. We even talk a tiny bit about Sorceress. Elle shares stories about Roger Corman including his ambitions to be a studio director and the decision to step away to start New World Pictures. We also spend a little time talking about serial killers, the fallout between Jack Hill and Austin McKinney, and movies with the best scenes featuring Dune Buggies. Why Dune Buggies? Because Dune Buggies are awesome. We want to generously thank Elle for being on the podcast and sharing her perspectives on these films. You can check out her website at http://elleschneider.com and look for her next documentary about educational films. Maybe she'll cover For Safety's Sake: In the Neighborhood? Probably not. We're unveiling a new series on the podcast: Corman Graduates, where we chronologically discuss the filmography of a director who went through "the Roger Corman school of filmmaking" and we're starting with Jack Hill, director of films like TEH BIG DOLL HOUSE and COFFY. Joining us for this first episode is writer, film historian, and filmmaker Calum Waddell, who literally wrote the book on Jack Hill with 2009's Jack Hill: The Exploitation and Blaxploitation Master, Film By Film. We start at the very beginning of Hill's career with "The Host," his student film at UCLA, and his entry into the world of Roger Corman with his work on 1962's THE WASP WOMAN and 1963's THE TERROR before getting his first feature-length assignment, 1966's BLOOD BATH aka TRACK OF THE VAMPIRE, which saw Hill try to create a film around footage from a film shot in Yugoslavia that Corman had invested in. Corman eventually hands it to Stephanie Rothman, another Corman graduate, who took Hill's film about an obsessed artist who murders his models into a vampire film (at Corman's request, of course). Did we like the film? We discuss! We then talk about what Jack Hill felt was his true directorial debut, 1967's SPIDER BABY, which Hill did away from Corman and took some time before it reached theaters and then was mostly forgotten until Quentin Tarantino stepped in the 1990s when he re-released Hill's 1975 film SWITCHBLADE SISTERS on his now-defunct Rolling Thunder Pictures label. We'll discuss the incredible performances - including Sid Haig and Lon Chaney Jr. - and why the film was so prophetic to the horror films that followed it. Don't miss this look into the beginnings of Jack Hill's career with the keen insight and first-hand knowledge of another exploitation expert, Calum Waddell. Joan Robinson Hill and her husband, Dr. John Hill, were the darlings of Houston's high society in the 1960s. Joan was a champion equestrian from one of Houston's wealthiest families, and John was a successful plastic surgeon with a love for classical music. They were young, attractive, and seemed to have it all—a picture-perfect couple moving through a world of horse shows, charity events, and fancy parties. But behind the scenes, things weren't as perfect as they seemed. Joan and John were opposites in many ways, and their differences caused tension from the start. To make matters worse, Joan's father, Ash Robinson, was a major presence in their lives. He was fiercely protective of Joan and had no problem getting involved in her marriage, which only added more strain. By 1969, the cracks in their relationship couldn't be ignored any longer. The problems in their marriage came to a head, setting off a chain of events that would stretch over six years and leave a trail of heartbreak, betrayal, and tragedy for everyone involved.Join us on Patreon to hear all three parts today.Today's snack: Texas caviarSources:Thompson, Thomas (2001). This is a CLASSIC EPISODE! On March 3rd, 1928, the Williamson Hospital was opened in the small town of Williamson, West Virginia. At the time, it was a state-of-the-art hospital and served the community for 60 years. Thousands of people passed through its doors, seeing births, deaths, and trauma. In 1988, the hospital closed its doors…but… Today, it's known as The Old Hospital on College Hill. Even though it no longer officially functions as a hospital, it seems like it's still serving patients, with doctors and nurses still there helping those in need. The doors are now open for those interested in paranormal investigations and historical tours. Today on the Grave Talks, Part Two of our conversation about The Old Hospital on College Hill with co-owner and manager Tonya Webb.
