Pop culture through the lens of race or gender and sometimes both.
The Pop Culture Makes Me Jealous podcast is an absolute gem for anyone who loves to delve into the world of pop culture. Hosted by Julia, this show offers insightful and entertaining discussions on a wide range of topics, leaving listeners with a new perspective on their favorite shows, movies, and books. As an elder Millennial, I find it crucial to reflect on the media that both shapes my youth and influences my current consumption. PCMMJ allows me to do just that, providing in-depth analyses that take into account the causes I care about.
One of the best aspects of PCMMJ is the depth and length that Julia and her guests go into on each topic. While each episode focuses on a specific movie or book (I particularly loved the one on Nella Larsen's Passing), it is through these discussions that a variety of related topics are explored. The level of insight and knowledge brought forth in every episode is astonishing, making for an educational and enjoyable listening experience. Furthermore, Julia's wit and humor often lead to uncontrollable laughter throughout the episodes. Additionally, despite being a millennial herself, Julia comfortably navigates TV shows, movies, and books from all generations with familiarity and intelligence.
In a recent episode featuring Amy Albertson discussing Asian American representation in film, PCMMJ tackled an important topic that is often overlooked in mainstream media. This conversation not only provided valuable insights but also offered recommendations for must-watch movies. It was refreshing to see such topics being covered with sincerity and thoughtfulness.
While there are many positives about PCMMJ, there are some areas for improvement as well. Occasionally, I found myself wanting more structure in the discussions as they tended to meander at times. Providing clearer segments or themes could enhance the overall flow of each episode. Additionally, while I appreciate Julia's enthusiasm for diverse topics within pop culture, some episodes may benefit from more focused exploration rather than trying to cover a broad range of subjects.
In conclusion, Pop Culture Makes Me Jealous is a must-listen for anyone who enjoys thought-provoking discussions on pop culture. Julia's expertise and passion shine through in every episode, creating a fun and informative experience for listeners. From deep dives into iconic TV shows like The Hills and Laguna Beach to conversations about important issues like representation, this podcast covers a wide range of captivating topics. Although some episodes could benefit from more structure, the overall quality and entertainment value make PCMMJ an excellent addition to any pop culture enthusiast's playlist. I am excited to see where this show goes in the future and eagerly await new episodes.
