First we chat about a weird little chupacabra play Ben saw, then discuss the conspiracies that have metastasized from Joe Biden's prostate cancer and the resurgence of our old nemesis the Food Babe. For our main topic, we have esteemed historian of magic Owen Davies, who wrote the book (two, actually) on grimoires. In pop culture we see them in horror movies, comic books and even old children's movies like "Bedknobs and Broomsticks," but real (or "real") grimoires have been an ever-present relic for thousands of years. Grimoires are a mix of magic, marketing, fraud -- and sometimes blood -- and they have evolved along with the changes in ancient information technology, i.e., parchment and the printing press. From the Grand Grimoire of the early 18th century to Lovecraft to the pulp grimoires of the 1960s, magical words and demonic conjurations have gotten around one way or another.

It was a great pleasure for this week's Nostalgia Interviews podcast to meet screenwriter, author and award-winning podcaster Mark Stay. We begin by talking about Herne Bay and its cultural dynamics and learn that Mark has always been drawn to creativity, with Star Wars playing a formative influence. His teachers encouraged him, and Mark discusses the importance of reaching out to people in the know, and the time Mark bottled it when a director once rang him. We chat about what happens when you interact with ‘famous people' and we find out why it's the people two thirds up the ladder who can be the most useful. We discover why Mark gave up on acting and prefers writing, and we learn that Mark is a fan of Mike Leigh. We also hear about the three short films that Mark made and that he has written a full length screenplay. While learning his craft, Mark would make the most of every spare minute to write, and we find out what keeps Mark going, as well as why one can only run one's own race, and Mark talks about the importance of resilience and persistence. Mark also gives advice on the best strategies with, say, writing a novel. Mark has kept a diary since 2006, and we learn that his diaries and books are handwritten and then subsequently typed up. We talk about the Witches of Woodville books which Mark says are a cross between Dad's Army and Bedknobs and Broomsticks set during the Battle of Britain with a trio of bickering witches. They are grounded in reality. We also learn whether Mark's younger self would be surprised to discover what he is doing now, and how one can start out as an author in one's 50s. We learn why there is no such thing as an overnight success. We discuss the art of self-mythologizing and we find out why Mark is so wary of nostalgia, seeing it as a slippery slope towards fascism. Things weren't actually better in the past. Then, at the end of the interview Mark explains why he believes things are getting better and how it is important to live in the now and to have the imagination to look forward.

Eight movie reviews today, Punch it. Body blow body blow. #1(Bedknobs and Broomsticks 1971)As always for me, this one looks so very much better than it is. Don't get me wrong it's got murder she wrote and Witches, but it still puts me to sleep in the middle sadly. #2(Death takes a holiday 1971) Gee whiz V did not love the dialogue here, not wrong, yet for me it kinda added to the oddness of the whole twilight zone package. At least Brad Pitt is not doing a terribly racist accent in this adaptation of the timeless tale where the grim reaper takes some time off to see what love is, oh the back log. #3 (The autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman 1974) Great movie where Cicely Tyson takes us from slavery to the civil rights movement when she is put into what I can only describe as “really bad makeup” Great director here is John Korty who directed Star Wars……..The Ewok Adventure in 84. #4(1900 1976) Omg this movie! It is long, intense, great, and unwatchable at times, unless you like real onscreen animal torture, we'll get into it. French guy from Green Card is here as well as Taxi Driver, Dominique Sanda (Janice from Damnation alley), and the sacred fluids guy from Dr. Strangelove Sterling Hayden. #5 (Tracks 1976) The movie where Dennis Hopper kisses weird. Hopper and the guy from quantum leap are on a train, (Cylon Q leap guy, not Enterprise captain one)Rad N trippy director here is Henry Jaglom. #6 (The getting of Wisdom 1977) Early film from director Bruce Beresford (Tender Mercies, Breaker Morrant, Driving Miss Daisy) Here we have too much mean sass at this school. It's a coming of age type thing that introduces Austrian Hero Laura Tweedle, played here by Susannah Fowle. #7 (Patrick 1978) Freaky Telekinesis patient is totally brain dead, but he spits. Susan Penhaligon plays Kathy who scores a weird job in this movie that the internet told me was an underrated classic, it is not. #8 (Who'll stop the Rain 1978) Nick Nolte is back from Nam, and he has to help his buddy who doesn't know shit about smuggling drugs. Tuesday Weld plays Marge who is caught in the middle. Is this movie good? Find out with us. Thanks for listening.

Mandarava has always been a maker. Her way into puppetry came initially through trying to make sense of deep family grief. Mandarava's work is brimful of magic - filtered through fairy tales, her own deep immersion in illustrative art and the realm of stories accompanying long-cherished images, both from childhood and her further adventures as a grown-up. We hear about her exploration of female figures from the Buddhist and other mythic traditions, including the resonances between old mythologies and certain kinds of visualisation meditations that feature imagery representing a rich seam of possibilities for transcendent Buddhist practice. Aryajit, animator extraordinaire, was inspired as a boy by Star Wars' retelling of classic mythology. It was a major influence on his deciding to live out the Buddhist path as “the adventure of my life”; and to help make the tradition new in his own work animating many aspects of that path. His work appears extensively on The Buddhist Centre Online, explaining and evoking in brilliant ways both the nuances of the Dharma and the life of the Buddha as a set of nested myths and stories that still resonate today when re-presented in this way. Watch any of his animations (see the show notes below!) and you can feel his own quietly passionate heart in the work. Prasannavira from The Windhorse Trust was instrumental in helping fund Aryajit's new animated series, ‘The Legend of the Buddha'. We talk about helping shape a Buddhist context to fund creators and innovators. And how bringing up his own children within a broadly Buddhist culture informed by classic stories and images has helped him as a parent. We also hear about Prasannavira's own trove of mythic reference points, including Studio Ghibli's ‘The Tale of the Princess Kaguya'. And about his early days as a Buddhist in London, profoundly affected by modern evocations (inspired by Tibetan tradition) of the great guru Padmasambhava. There's so much to enjoy in these thoughtful exchanges: from the legacy of classic British children's television and theatre to the life of the imagination itself. We explore how stories can help us work with past trauma to figure out a realistic path through life in relation to our ideals. And the connections between new work in animation, illustration, puppetry, drawing and painting and established traditions of folk and classical Buddhist art (from India, China, Japan and elsewhere). Whether it's the value of dramatization, theatre and ritual for evoking the best of Buddhism, or how being “good” at art isn't the point - everything flows in this fun episode about how to never lose touch with the sense of wonder and creativity we have as kids, and need now more than ever. Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to James Tomlinson, son of actor David Tomlinson. James was incredibly gracious with his time and patient with the lag of an international podcast recording and really spent some time talking to us about the big, and small stuff, about growing up the son of Mary Poppins employer, Mr. Banks. Of course we talk about the Disney films David Tomlinson was known for – the aforementioned Mary Poppins, The Love Bug and Bedknobs and Broomsticks but we also discuss his massive career prior to Walt & company on the British stage and screen. We hear about films like Warning for Warriors, Miranda and Up the Creek to name a few. We also hear about how a role in a light comedy on the London stage led him to his most famous character on the big screen. James was also incredibly open as we discuss the tragedies his father endured and the very awkward family life that his father dealt him. We also discussed his dad's time as a flight instructor for the RAF in WWII as well of that of his two brothers. Plus we hear about David's own father who lived a very conventional life. I mean lives. I mean, more than one. We get into that shocking story and his grandfather's backstory of WWI that is hard to believe. This is the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story. And this one, you won't forget.
This week Vee and John are discussing the wonderful combination of live action and animation. They picked two classic Disney films from the 70s, full of songs and colorful characters. This is: Bedknobs and Broomsticks, and Pete's Dragon

From the nadir of Disney filmmaking comes yet another spin on Mark Twain's Connecticut Yankee, this time featuring Dennis Dugan as a NASA engineer accidentally sent back in time with his android twin Hermes. It's not the worst movie we've covered for the show--the supporting cast of English comedians as Arthur's court are fine--but it's not exactly Bedknobs and Broomsticks. Starring Dennis Dugan, Sheila White, Kenneth Moore, Ron Moody, and Jim Dale. Written by Don Tait and directed by Russ Mayberry. This is a preview of our latest episode from Hollywood Avalon. As I'm scheduling this, I think I was technically supposed to put up the Star Wars 4 episode first, so that'll go up next. We ended up having to record this one twice because the first recording got lost. It technically would've been episode 69 if it had posted before Bedknobs and Broomsticks like it was supposed to, so I'm still numbering it that way. Also, this episode is literally 30 seconds short of being the longest. 31 seconds, if you want to get technical, because that would've put it longer that Encanto where 30 would've put it tied with Encanto. It's officially November, Pixie Dusters, and that means Ashley and Sammi are ready to break down some "Time Capsule" movies that they haven't discussed yet. This month you'll get a Drew Barrymore classic, Lindsay Lohan in her breakout role, and a film that heavily inspired Ashley's Disney fanfiction. But first up is Bedknobs and Broomsticks! This movie was produced around the same time as Mary Poppins...but lacks the charm and memorability of its predecessor.Follow your new Disney besties on Instagram @pixiedusttwinspodcast and on TikTok @pixiedusttwinspodcastFollow Dan, honorary third host of the "Pixie Dust Twins" Podcast, and King of the Manifestos: @Dantaastic on Instagram and YouTubeHave ideas for the show?
