For decades, animated movies shaped how we understood family, loss, and growing up. Early Disney films often began with tragedy — parents gone, heroes forced to survive on their own, and childhood filled with emotional challenges before the adventure even started. But something changed.Modern Disney and Pixar stories look very different. Instead of removing parents from the story, many newer films keep them present — flawed, learning, and sometimes even apologizing to their kids.In this episode of KDTime, let's take a deep dive into how family dynamics in animated films evolved from the earliest classics like Snow White, Bambi, and Cinderella, to modern stories like Encanto, Turning Red, and beyond. Why did Disney storytelling shift from survival to emotional healing? What does this say about changing cultural values around parenting and family? And how did an entire generation raised on these films influence the stories being told today?Join me as we explore one of the biggest narrative evolutions in animation history — and what it reveals about the generations who grew up watching. If you like what you hear join the movement linktr.ee/kdtimeEnjoy > Subscribe > Share

Meanwhile, National Research—which is considered one of the country's most accurate polling organizations, according to FiveThirtyEight—now has Ciattarelli running 1-point ahead of Sherrill. 3:10pm- A new report from the New Jersey Globe suggests NJ gubernatorial candidate Mikie Sherrill wasn't allowed to “walk with her graduating class in wake of a Navy Academy cheating scandal.” What was her exact role? New Jersey voters deserve transparency. 3:30pm- During a press conference on Thursday, Acting United States Attorney for the Northern District of Texas Nancy Larson revealed that the Dallas ICE shooter left behind several notes—making his intentions explicitly clear. She said he wrote about maximizing lethality and property damage to ICE personnel and facilities. It was also revealed that the shooter used “ICE tracking apps” to locate his target. 3:40pm- Rich plays a montage compiled by @WesternLensman on X which showcases Congressmembers Hakeem Jeffries, Dan Goldman, Pramila Jayapal, Maxwell Frost, Ilhan Omar, Jerry Nadler, Eric Swalwell habitually comparing ICE agents to the gestapo and terrorists and accusing them of “disappearing” people. 4:05pm- While speaking from North Carolina, Vice President JD Vance weighed in on ABC's Jimmy Kimmel suspension—noting, “What's the government action that the Trump Administration has engaged in to kick Jimmy Kimmel, or anybody else, off the air? Zero! Compare that to the Biden Administration where we found out just yesterday that conservatives on YouTube, and on a number of social media platforms, were being censored. That is real government censorship.” 4:10pm- A new report from the New Jersey Globe suggests NJ gubernatorial candidate Mikie Sherrill wasn't allowed to “walk with her graduating class in wake of a Navy Academy cheating scandal.” What was her exact role? New Jersey voters deserve transparency. 4:30pm- From the Oval Office, President Donald Trump signed a series of Executive Orders (including one which “saves” TikTok from being banned in the U.S.), answered questions from the press, and recapped his meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. 5:05pm- From the Oval Office, President Donald Trump signed a series of Executive Orders (including one which “saves” TikTok from being banned in the U.S.), answered questions from the press, and recapped his meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. 5:20pm- While appearing on CSPAN, Food & Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary revealed that “we are going to approve a drug called Leucovorin for the treatment of autism.” Makary continued: "This is, I think, the most exciting part of the announcement...We are going to approve a drug called leucovorin for the treatment of autism, and it may help 50-60% of kids with autism." 5:40pm- Ex-colleagues warn that Keith Olbermann is “losing it.” Rich wonders, how is this a revelation? Olbermann has been unhinged for years! 6:05pm- On Thursday, President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order finalizing an agreement allowing American investors—most notably cloud-computing firm Oracle—to take control of TikTok's U.S. operations. Trump reached the agreement with Chinese President Xi Jinping earlier this week. 6:15pm- According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, the Department of Justice is weighing whether to charge former FBI Director James Comey for lying during his 2020 congressional testimony regarding the 2016 Russia collusion hoax. 6:30pm- A new report from the New Jersey Globe suggests NJ gubernatorial candidate Mikie Sherrill wasn't allowed to “walk with her graduating class in wake of a Navy Academy cheating scandal.” What was her exact role? Disney/Pixar's slate of films in their "Disney+ streaming era" as it was post-COVID-19 pandemic, to put it shortly, might have been a bit forgettable: the gang has discussed Soul and certainly enjoyed its mellow vibe, but Onward got dumpstered in March 2020 and Luca appears to have completely fallen out of the cultural headspace. 2022's Turning Red, on the other hand, was actually a film brought to our April Fool's special episode that year, and now we get to seriously discuss its impressive portrayals of the middle school experience, Asian heritage, the cultural hallmarks of the 90s, and a genuine coming-of-age narrative. We all agree that it's a bit underrated these days in the Disney/Pixar pantheon, and there's a ton of impressive emotional payoff and strong messages packed into a neat little 2-hour runtime. Content warning: SPOILERS, strong language.Editor's note: I think it's hilarious that this episode is Episode 4 of Season 18. It's like poetry.

As the Talking Heads once nearly sang: “And may find yourself beamed up into a spacecraft. And you may find yourself pretending to be the leader of Earth. And you may find yourself hanging out with weird and wonderful beings from outer-space, going up against intergalactic warlords and maybe learning a thing or two about belonging along the way.” Yes, it's an Elio special on today's Script Apart, as we venture across the cosmos with the Pixar film's co-directors, Domee Shi and Madeline Sharafian. Elio tells the story of a child who longs to be abducted by aliens. Still reeling from the loss of his parents and struggling to adjust to living with his well-meaing aunt, the character embarks on an adventure that changes how he sees life back on Earth. It was written by Julia Cho, Mark Hammer and Mike Jones, from a story by Madeline, Domee and Adrian Molina. Domee you may know as the director of Turning Red, which we covered on this show in 2022. Madeline, meanwhile, is the director behind Burrough, a beautiful Pixar short film from a couple of years ago (this is her first feature). In the spoiler conversation you're about to hear, we discuss initial drafts of this story in which Olga was Elio's mother, rather than his aunt. I ask about how the film grapples with loneliness; the process of creating the magical worlds that Pixar movies so often invite filmgoers into, whether that's Monstropolis or Coco's Land of the Dead; and of course, the meaning of that Carl Sagan speech asking “Are we alone?” that close the film.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. Whatever it is we did to kids that started around 2013 has led to whole generations of freaked-out, delusional cult members who can barely function now when things don't go their way. There is no turning it around. There is no changing what so many of them believe. This militant army worked well for the Democrats, but I do wonder if any of them looked at Kenosha or Portland and thought, What have we done?Because so many adults were too afraid to confront the problem until the problem grew up and joined the workforce, that power is out now, and it is destroying the Democratic Party, not to mention everything else the Left controls, faster than you can say Holy Woketopia Batman. That fear that has crippled all of them surprised me. I didn't know so many would be so willing to conform, stay quiet, say nothing, or join the mob and pick up a stone. I don't know, I guess I thought there would be more like me, people willing to stand up and push back.Lionel Shriver talks about this personality type while on a recent episode of the Triggernometry podcast.Speaking of mania, I'll never forget how a film critic named Sean O'Connell once wrote a film review about Pixar's Turning Red. He didn't particularly like the movie because he wrote from his perspective (normie white dude). The attacks came fast and hard, from young Asian girls who had begged for representation in movies, to the scolds on Twitter. Then came the agonizing op-eds. By the end, he didn't lose his job, but he almost did. He had to apologize and take down the review. It went all the way to this:Even after his apology, the tweets that flooded in continued to punish him for not liking what is (not a very good movie in the first place) about a 12-year-old girl getting her period. He was being honest, as film critics are supposed to do, but not anymore. They even escalated it and asked him to name names:Sean O'Connell should have stood up to them. He should have done what I did every time they came for me. You turn around and you flip them the double bird. It isn't that hard. Yes, you will lose almost everything, but in return, you will gain your self-respect.If they can't even tell the truth in a film review back 2022, how can they possibly fix what is wrong with any of it, from Hollywood to the Democratic Party?Send in the DudebrosIt's obvious to everyone that Democrats are repelling men. All men. Young men, old men, Black and Hispanic men. They've decided the reason for that is the “woke crap” that many can't stand but will never admit out loud. They say they've gotten the message. Now, they figure they don't have to do much, like offer the public a way out of the madness that has afflicted their party, and thus, all of the cultural, corporate, and educational institutions they control. No, it's a messaging problem, not a policy problem. They only have to dispatch a few mascu-bros to get the talking points out that they hate the “woke crap” too but they still want to be good people and do the right thing, unlike the other half of the country who are bad people, and don't want to do the right thing. It's easy to spot the likely paid influencers on TikTok who almost look normal until they start parroting the talking points of the madness of the Left. And then, just like that, we're sucked back into the crazy.Oh, it isn't as bad as the women who dominate the party and TikTok. If I spend too much time surfing that algo, as I often do for research, I come out of it thinking, is that really what became of it all-thirty years of progressivism, feminism, and activism, and it ends with delusion and mania?Influencer Henry Sisson has emerged as a supposedly brotastic anti-woke Democrat on Piers Morgan. Then, there was David Hogg on Bill Maher, pretending it's possible to bring some sanity to the party so young men can “get laid and have fun.”Perhaps it is a good strategy. Just give those who can't stand the wokeness a reason not to worry about it anymore.Reactions like that might help them accomplish their goal of bringing people back to the party, especially men, but I doubt it. Matt Walsh is correct when he says they were never cool.Ultimately, their reality disconnect prevents them from ending their ongoing mass hysteria. Take this piece at Daily Kos (yes, it still exists, shockingly), by this person, note the pronouns in bio:She/Her writes:That March story about Enola Gay was part of an electronic preliminary pull that flagged certain words that might unearth woke content. That didn't mean Pete Hegseth banned it. As with the children's book by Julianne Moore, it was put in the “to be looked at” pile, but that didn't stop the headlines. If you see that many headlines hitting your feed and it's spread far and wide, and people you trust and admire, why wouldn't you believe it? And if they are being misled to that degree, how can they ever be expected to pull themselves out of it? And if they are not telling us the truth but just trying to hurt Trump, how can we trust them? After all that, they dumped him anyway. Lesson learned, eh, David? The Democrats have become so afraid of blowback that they have to try to get their message out anonymously. But do they ever ask themselves how we can address the needs of the people if we are that afraid of our own party?Recently, Mark Halperin spoke for them in an attempt to force the Democrats to the table to confront some of it.Why They're Stuck with itWokeness isn't a “fad,” like a tramp stamp tattoo you mature your way out of, then seek to remove. This goes deep, probably deeper than anyone ever knew back in 2012 and 2013 when the “whole of society” effort began unfolding in schools, in institutions, and online to gently introduce Critical Race Theory as a new way of seeing ourselves in the world. There's Nobody Like U, Turning Red.Turning Red is a ground-breaking animated film, rightfully kicking off Animation Season 2025 in style, with magical puberty front and centre, that addresses the universal struggles of adolescence through the story of Mei Lee, a 13-year-old girl caught between her familial obligations and her burgeoning independence.Domee Shi's feature-length directorial debut represents a significant milestone as Pixar's first solo female director and first female director of colour, as well as having the first all-female lead team, and a unique animation style influenced by anime and traditional Chinese culture, enhancing its visual storytelling. And Red Panda Mei is SO FLUFFY!It's also a deft exploration of cultural identity reflecting the immigrant experience, of balancing family expectations with personal desires, as well as tackling periods; a subject that remains taboo in most situations, encouraging open conversations about menstruation. It captures the awkwardness and excitement of teenage life—particularly for girls who feel the weight of both cultural and familial expectations.Critically acclaimed yet hugely financially underperforming, Turning Red highlights the challenges faced by diverse narratives in mainstream cinema. It's more than just a children's movie; it is a celebration of the regular, normal, everyday experiences that shape us all. Let's relive our awkward teen experiences together!4*Town 4 EVER!!!I would love to hear your thoughts on Turning Red !Verbal Diorama is now an award-winning podcast!
