Patrick Mouratoglou is one of tennis's most successful and unconventional coaches, known for his work with Serena Williams during her dominant return to form—helping her win 10 Grand Slams and reclaim the world number one ranking. But his journey to the top began in the darkest of places: a childhood marked by crippling shyness, zero self-esteem, and such severe social anxiety that he couldn't make eye contact without fear of vomiting. When his dream of becoming a professional tennis player was crushed at 15, that rock bottom moment became the catalyst for an extraordinary transformation. Today, Patrick coaches the next generation of champions, founded the innovative Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS), and has written a book about the "progress zone"—the space where confidence is built through small, daily victories. His approach to coaching is refreshingly transparent in a sport known for secrecy, and his insights on building champions apply far beyond the tennis court. What You'll Learn in This Episode: Why the worst thing that happens to you might be the best thing—how Patrick's devastating rejection at 15 became the turning point that saved his life and launched his coaching career The hidden truth about motivation—why players (and people) who seem "unmotivated" are actually protecting their confidence, and what really drives elite performance How to rebuild someone's confidence from zero—Patrick's unconventional methods, including secretly rigging matches to create winning streaks and psychological breakthroughs What separates champions from great players—the mindset traits of Serena Williams, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic that have nothing to do with talent The art of hearing what people think, not just what they say—Patrick's most powerful coaching skill and why "the weather is nice" means completely different things in London versus Miami
In this 2025 Season Recap, Andy Roddick, Jon Wertheim, and Producer Mike dig into their “winners and unforced errors” of the tennis season: from successful US Open mixed doubles exhibition to the much-criticized extended Masters 1000 events. They debate the sport's failure to empower creators and players to use match footage, and the power struggle over prize money and revenue share at the Grand Slams. The crew also relives Sinner–Alcaraz's unforgettable Roland Garros epic, Coco Gauff's and Iga Świątek's seasons, Sabalenka's resilience, and the booming depth of American tennis on both tours. Finally, they zoom out to why tennis is “having a massive moment” globally and why that makes the structural mistakes and missed opportunities even more frustrating. COMMENT BELOW What was your biggest “winner” and “unforced error” of the 2025 tennis season?

In this episode of Meet the Professionals, I sit down with tennis host, commentator, and writer Nick McCarvel to unpack what it really looks like to build a career in tennis media.Nick shares how a childhood dream in Montana turned into bylines at the New York Times and USA Today, and how that writing work eventually led him to the mic as an on-court host at Grand Slams and big events around the world. We talk about cold-calling editors, early social media experiments, and why persistence (and a lot of “no”s) still matter in 2025.Nick also pulls back the curtain on his current roles with the Olympic Channel and at tournaments like Cincinnati, Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the Australian Open. He explains how he prepares to tell players' stories on court, deals with nerves and stage fright as an introvert, and why research and empathy are just as important as being good on camera. If you've ever wondered how to get into tennis journalism, presenting, or sports media more broadly, this is your masterclass.Chapters:00:00 Introduction and Background02:54 Career Journey in Tennis Journalism06:06 Transition to On-Camera Presence09:08 Connecting with Players and Audience12:03 Research and Preparation for Interviews15:01 Innovations in Tennis Presentation17:58 Advice for Aspiring Tennis ProfessionalsLinks:Nick McCarvel on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/nickmccarvel?igsh=MXU4YW1uZXQ0MGhudw==We have Merch!!! Our 2025 season wrap-up episode is here. Friend of the pod Tumaini Carayol joins us to go through some of the news that broke since we were last on – Christopher Eubanks announcing his retirement and Jannik Sinner winning in Turin again. We look back at the Grand Slams and share our highlights from each one. There were some memorable matches as well as moments at all of them, but it feels like the French Open topped the lot. Madison Keys, Coco Gauff, Jasmine Paolini, Taylor Townsend, Naomi Osaka, Ben Shelton, Gabriel Diallo and Arthur Fils (before injury) all had great seasons. Victoria Mboko's incredible ascent up the rankings was really something to witness. So was Félix Auger-Aliassime's resurgence. We close with what we're looking forward to next year and some outlandish takes for 2026. (PS: studio time was running short, apologies!) Thanks for tapping in with us this year, we appreciate you all. Don't forget to rate, review and share on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Audioboom. I can tell you it was like sitting with a long, lost neighbor when sitting with Kelly E. Carter. And in fact, we were neighbors of sorts back in the day. It wasn't until I was searching for images to create the icons for this podcast did I realize I was in the presence of true maverick royalty. Besides being a New York Times best selling author, she has reported from the greatest sporting events of the world: the NBA FInals, Super Bowls, Grand Slams, Stanley Cup Finals and much more. And more intriguing, she was the woman reporter in the locker room! I was so intrigued and we could have spoken for hours because she is the Founder of the wine tourism group, Napa Valley Noir. sitting down with Kelly E. Carter in the studio for this episode of Wine Talks was like taking a stroll down memory lane while simultaneously hitching a ride on a train heading straight for the future of wine tourism. There's something about Kelly—her energy, her wit, and just her knack for storytelling—that gets you thinking about the wine industry in ways that feel both nostalgic and freshly invigorating. We kicked things off with some good old home turf banter—Kelly's Windsor Hills childhood (Ray Charles and Ike & Tina Turner for neighbors, no less) and my own roots in Inglewood. Instantly, there was this shared sense that, before wine stole our hearts, Southern California had given us some pretty unique perspectives on culture and community. And as Kelly pointed out, “you'll never know everything” about winemaking, which is honestly the very reason some of us keep swirling, sipping, and studying. I know I do. What genuinely impressed me was Kelly's trajectory. She was the first female to cover the Lakers—how many people do you meet who set out in fourth grade to be a sports journalist and actually make it happen? She wasn't just content to report on sports. She made her mark, switched lanes into entertainment, and then into luxury travel writing, which eventually led her to Florence and Positano. It's the kind of layered journey you don't hear about every day. You talk to some folks, they've been in wine their whole lives. With Kelly, it's travel, sports, culture—all converging in the glass. We got into the nitty-gritty of wine and travel writing and how AI could never replace the boots-on-the-ground experience. I had to laugh—when Kelly plugged Napa into chatbots, she got recommendations for wineries that are closed for renovations. "You have to know the latest," she said, reminding me that the best wine stories are always written with real shoe leather, not just code. Her insights into Napa Valley tourism were equally compelling. As the founder of Napa Valley Noir, Kelly's passion lies in creating experiences rich in narrative, not just pouring cabs for folks who made it big in tech and want a taste of the valley lifestyle. She's all about partnerships with wineries that have soul, stories, and a genuine connection to their craft—whether it's a historic vineyard run by women or an impromptu meeting with Thomas Keller that leaves guests starstruck. Frankly, I couldn't agree more. The stories make the bottle—and the memories. That's what keeps this business alive, even as the market shifts. Kelly also talked about the recent surge in African American visitors to Napa, thanks in part to celebrity influence (LeBron, Kobe, you name it), and her drive to ensure these visitors experience the full magic Napa has to offer, not just what's on the surface. She's honest—her intake forms ask straight-up about comfort level on bottle prices. She knows how to match guests with the right wineries, sometimes calling in a favor for an extra pour or a charcuterie board, because that's how relationships form and deepen in this business. There's a lesson in Kelly's methods: whether it's a group of corporate execs, first-timers, or veteran collectors, she makes sure the experience is tailored and memorable. Maybe it's the aftermath of her own battles—her candor about beating a rare cancer got me thinking about perspective, gratitude, and the importance of living fully, whether it's raising a glass or hiking through a vineyard. Talking with Kelly reminded me why I started this podcast in the first place. It's the human stories behind the wines, the journeys of the people who bring them to life—and the shared desire to know just a little bit more, one sip, one story at a time. Cheers to Kelly and to all of us still curious. This week we're delighted to welcome Patrick Mouratoglou to the show. Patrick is one of tennis' most successful coaches, working with Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka, Holger Rune, Grigor Dimitrov, Simona Halep to name a few. Perhaps most famous for his collaboration with Serena Williams where they won 10 Grand Slams together, it's regarded as one of the most successful coach-player relationships in tennis history.Alongside this, Patrick is the founder of the world-renowned Mouratoglou Tennis Academy. The academy has nurtured hundreds of elite players including Coco Gauff, Holger Rune and Stefanos Tsitsipas through a personalized, high-performance training model. It combines cutting-edge facilities with academic programs, helping student-athletes from over 45 countries balance education and sport. The academy has become a global brand with satellite centers in China, Greece, Italy, Malaysia, Dubai and the U.S.Patrick's new book ‘Champion Mindset' takes the position of transferring everything he has learned in tennis to apply to everyday life. Believe it or not, what makes Serena so successful won't be too far away from what can work for you, in business, performance, or just general life. I have put the link in the bio (not an advert!) because it's one of the best books I've read. This is an inspiring conversation that I know you will love, whether a big tennis fan or just interested in the philosophies of nurturing top talent. On today's show we discuss: Coaching the Greats:Inside the 10-year partnership with Serena Williams that delivered 10 Grand Slams and is regarded as one of the greatest player–coach relationships in history. Why courage, honesty, and “never being afraid to get fired” are central to coaching elite athletes.Lessons from working with Naomi Osaka, Simona Halep, Holger Rune, Grigor Dimitrov and others and the unique challenges of guiding champions at different stages of their careers. The Philosophy of Confidence:Why success is built on stacking “little victories” and creating positive experiences every day.How champions like Murray, Djokovic, and Serena win even when they're not playing well and how to transfer that mindset to business and everyday life. The art of knowing what to say, when to say it, and when to say nothing at all.The Mouratoglou Academy & Champion Mindset:How his academy became Europe's biggest and now spans 14 global centers, producing players like Coco Gauff, Holger Rune, and Stefanos Tsitsipas. The importance of combining world-class training with education to make tennis accessible beyond the elite.Patrick's new book Champion Mindset and why the same principles that drove Serena to greatness can apply to anyone in sport, business, or life.Champion Mindset by Patrick Mouratoglou (Yellow Kite: £20)A huge thank you to our amazing partners on the show:StrydeBringing sports investment opportunities to your door. 1974 was a banner year for Jimmy Connors… He entered three Grand Slams and won all three of them. He was ranked #1 in the world and was engaged to Chris Evert. Life was good. But in 1975, things didn't go quite as smoothly. His engagement to Chrissy was called off… and while he was still the most dominant player in the world, he failed to win a Grand Slam, losing in the finals at the Australian Open to John Newcombe, in the finals at Wimbledon to Arthur Ashe, and now in the finals of the US Open to Manual Orantes. Was this the beginning of the end for Connors? Hardly. He would win 5 of his Grand Slam titles starting in 1976 at the US Open where he would there again in '78, '82 & '83 as well as Wimbledon for a 2nd time in 1982. And who would forget his incredible run at the 1991 US Open at at the age of 39. Curry Kirkpatrick hasn't forgotten it. He was covering a good portion of Connors and Evert's careers back when they were the King & Queen of tennis for Sports Illustrated and gives us an inside look at what happened to Jimmy against Orantes in the finals of '75. A simple reason for the shocking win was the Spaniard was sensational on clay courts, and beginning in 1975, Forest Hills surface was clay for 3 years. Advantage Orantes. Curry also tells us what happened on the women's side of the draw as Chris Evert was beginning her dominance of tennis… Having won the French Open in 1974 & '75 as well as Wimbledon a year earlier, Evert added the US Open to her list of achievements… and it was the first of 6 US Open Titles in her storied career as she would win it again in '76, '77, '78, '80 & '82. Two of tennis all-time greats were dominating tennis in the 70's and Curry was there for all of it and joins us on POP to tell us how Orantes almost didn't even get to the finals and how that loss by Connors was just a blip as he would continue to be a force in tennis for another 15 years! And he tells us how at age 16 “he invented” Chris Evert writing the first major story about her in SI before penning the final installment of her illustrious career in the late 80's when she retired from the sport. Nobody knows Connors and Evert from the mid 70's like Curry Kirkpatrick and he joins us for a record 5th time on the show to regale us with great stories of two of tennis' all-time greats… Jimmy and Chrissy… on the Past Our Prime podcast Learn more about your ad choices. "Is Mike Helman the hero we never saw coming—or just our IT guy moonlighting as a slugger?"In this electric episode of The Ben and Skin Show, your favorite crew—Ben Rogers, Jeff “Skin” Wade, Kevin “KT” Turner, and Krystina Ray—take you on a rollercoaster of sports surprises, outrageous betting odds, and locker-room-level laughs. From the Texas Rangers' improbable win powered by a 29-year-old journeyman to Vegas laying odds on sex toys being thrown onto NFL fields, this segment is pure chaos in the best way.

This week we're delighted to welcome Dominic Thiem to the show. We've waited nearly 100 shows but finally tennis has arrived, right in the middle of the US Open, which Dominic won in a 5 set epic in 2020. One of the few non-Federer, Nadal, Djokovic players to win a slam while those three were at their peak, Dominic's career saw him win 17 ATP titles alongside the Slam before being forced into retirement at just 31 through injury. But in his own words, Dominic describes this as a ‘new beginning not a farewell'. From playing through the most incredible era tennis has seen, losing two French Open finals to Nadal and one Australian Open to Djokovic, receiving over $30m in prize money; this is a serious education that few could even think about experiencing. So how is Dominic applying this to his life away from the court, and what is it like for a tennis player when they move on from an individual sport that requires your 100% focus? As a big tennis fan, this was a special show to do with one of the most normal and humble athletes we've had the pleasure of meeting. A different conversation full of unique insight delivered through the sharing of stories that we all want to know about. On today's show we discuss: The Power of Grand Slams: What makes the four Grand Slams such incredible events to participate in…and which one did Dominic enjoy the most? Playing Rafael Nadal in two French Open finals and the aura that surrounded one of the sport's greatest ever players. Dominic's triumphant 2020 US Open victory; coming from two sets down to achieve his lifetime ambition. The pain of loss and the 2020 Australian Open final defeat to Djokovic. The Finances of Tennis Players: Is the distribution of revenue from tournaments to players sufficient? Can you carve out a career for yourself if you are outside of the world top 100? The importance of capitalising on success to build your value as a brand off the court. A look at the ATP's ‘Baseline Initiative': does the effort to ensure players have a minimum fixed annual salary work? What was it like to receive his first paycheck of €4,000 just for playing in a tournament? How are the finances divided up amongst the players team when prize money is received? How it can cost nearly $1m for a young player to reach the top of the sport! The Tennis World Today: How important has the rise of Alcaraz and Sinner been to carry forward this next phase of tennis? The importance of academies and investment into tennis to make the pathway for young players easier to navigate. Is tennis about to see a LIV golf style disruption? What rules would Dominic change to make the sport more appealing to the audience of today? Welcome back, tennis fans! It is July 10th, this is Nakashima Nightly, and I'm Dan Burkett, your lead Brandon Nakashima correspondent. Before we begin with our usual news report regarding superstar Brandon Nakashima, I want to first extend a heartfelt congratulations to Amanda Anisimova for defeating Sabalenka to earn her spot in this year's Wimbledon final. Truly, an amazing run she's been having, and we hope to see her take the title on Saturday. Now, let's get to it:While most professional athletes spend their seasons traveling, training, and competing non-stop, American tennis player Brandon Nakashima chose a different route today. Instead of heading straight back to the practice courts after his Wimbledon run, Nakashima took an unorthodox detour in his grass-court season—with a leisurely round of golf alongside his brother. The 23-year-old, known for his calm and composed presence on the tennis court, decided to take a break not with more drills or gym time—but with fresh air, soft fairways, and the soft thwack of a golf ball off a tee. It wasn't about training his swing; it was about recharging his mind and body—something more and more top athletes are realizing is just as important as physical workouts. So why would a professional tennis player swap his high-stakes routine for a quiet morning on the green?Because on the ATP Tour, rest is part of the grind.Brandon Nakashima may not always be in the spotlight like some of his louder or flashier tennis peers, but that's exactly what makes him so interesting. He lets his tennis do the talking—and this season, it's said plenty. After winning two tough matches at Wimbledon, including a four-set victory over fellow American Reilly Opelka, Nakashima was knocked out in the third round by Italy's Lorenzo Sonego. While some players might jump straight into the next tournament, Nakashima chose something different: a reset. With a handful of smaller grass-court tournaments still on the calendar before the U.S. Open series kicks off, Nakashima and his team decided that what he needed most wasn't another session of hitting backhands. It was balance. The Demands of the ATP TourTo understand why Nakashima's day off matters, you need to understand how intense life on the ATP Tour really is.Professional tennis players don't just play four tournaments a year like the Grand Slams. Many play 25 to 30 tournaments annually, all over the world—on different continents, time zones, surfaces, and climates. One week you might be playing on clay in Rome, and the next on hard court in Montreal.Matches can last three hours or more, and even if a player loses early, they often have to jump on a plane within 24 hours to get to the next event. That means players are constantly dealing with jet lag, sore muscles, mental pressure, and the challenge of keeping their body healthy. It's no wonder that injuries, burnout, and exhaustion are common—even among top players.Let's talk about Why Recovery Isn't “Being Lazy”To someone on the outside, taking a day off from training might seem like slacking. But in professional sports, recovery is actually part of the plan. Experts in sports science often say rest is when the body grows stronger—not during the workout, but after it.Here's what proper recovery can help with:Muscle repair – After intense matches, muscles need time to rebuild and recover. Overtraining can lead to injuries.Mental reset – Tennis is incredibly mental. Players often spend hours focusing, strategizing, and handling pressure. A day away helps clear the mind.Preventing burnout – Constant competition can drain motivation. Fun, stress-free activities like golf, swimming, or spending time with family help players come back fresh.
It's Ladies' Semifinals Day at Wimbledon — and it did not disappoint. Amanda Anisimova delivered one of the performances of the Championships, battling past World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in a stunning upset. Join Joel and Chris as they break down why Sabalenka keeps stumbling at the business end of Grand Slams and unpack the remarkable story of Anisimova's comeback after her mental health sabbatical. They also tackle the debate around Sabalenka's so-called “dominance” — and whether ranking points alone tell the whole story. In the other semifinal, Iga Swiatek put on a ruthless clinic to dismantle Belinda Bencic and book her spot in her first Wimbledon final. The duo dig into what's clicking in Swiatek's grass-court game, whether she's finally shed the “clay-court specialist” label, and how her experience in major finals could play a role against Anisimova, who's about to contest her first. Plus, they preview the Men's Semifinals: Novak Djokovic takes on Jannik Sinner in a Roland Garros rematch, while defending champion Carlos Alcaraz faces off against Taylor Fritz.BABOLATBabolat are an official partner of Wimbledon and their Wimbledon collaboration collection and Pure Drive (2025) is available to purchase now from babolat.com SOCIALSFollow us on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, plus email the show tennisweeklypod@gmail.com.MERCHPurchase Tennis Weekly Merch through our Etsy store including limited edition designs by Krippa Design where all proceeds go towards the podcast so we can keep doing what we do!REVIEWS***Please take a moment to rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your pods. Ben Shelton fell to world No 1 Jannik Sinner in straight sets – 7-6(2), 6-4, 6-4 – on a busy No 1 Court. The American 10th seed, who admitted he felt under pressure on serve throughout the contest, was up a mini-break in the first-set tiebreak before Sinner rattled off six points in a row to win it. In set two, Sinner, who was rocking a sleeve on his right arm, was in the zone. Serving at 4-5, Shelton got broken which handed the second set to the Italian. The third set was on serve until 4-5, with Shelton serving to stay in the match. Sinner turned up the heat on return and broke the American for the second and ultimately final time. In his post-match press conference, we asked Shelton to reflect on reaching the *quarter-finals or better at all four of the Grand Slams at the age of 22 (Shelton corrected us as he is yet to reach the last eight in Paris). We did have something to celebrate after defending women's doubles champions Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova booked their spot in the semi-finals after a 7-6, 6-3 win over 10th seeds Timea Babos and Luisa Stefani Rate, review and share on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Audioboom. Former junior slam tennis player Georgia Drummy joins Eoin Sheahan this evening to chat about her life and career, including her college tennis days, recovering from back surgery, and where her tennis life is going next.
There is little doubt about who the best player in the women's game is right now. Aryna Sabalenka has cemented her status as world number one in the past 12 months, and has made the final in five of the past six Grand Slams where she has been fit to start the tournament. However, despite consistently high form the Belarusian has lost both major finals she has contested in 2025 and much like Jannik Sinner in the men's sport is yet to win a Grand Slam away from her favoured hard courts.Sabalenka is a clear and deserving favourite for Wimbledon. If you were to construct the ideal player for this surface you would pick her. She possesses a huge serve, can hit her opponents off the court and has recently developed variety that her elite peers would dream of having in their arsenal.
It's time for the Crown Jewel of the Grand Slams and we're breaking down the grass, talking trash, and covering the sass. Reporter, former top junior, and grass enthusiast Colby Grey (no relation to Sasha or Kerri) joins as this week's co-host and talks about his time playing with some of today's pros and he does his best to keep Federer in the GOAT debate. Plus we have a few modest proposals for the tour, like why not let us tip for a great match if we're tipping for everything else? And we make our always spot on predictions for who's going deep at Wimbledon and who's bottoming out early.

In some sports, the triple crown or grand slam has achieved a legendary status, and in others, the definition changes rather frequently.Learn more about Triple Crowns and Grand Slams and how they are achieved on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily. This week, I'm fresh back from The Roost in Nebraska, where I took two of my grandsons on a trip we'll never forget. Middle grandson Matt wrapped up his Grand Slam with a beautiful Merriam, and Cranky, true to form, grabbed a Rio because, in his words, he “came to kill a turkey!” After hearing the boys recap their hunts, I get a little sentimental. This trip marked the end of an era, as my longtime friend Jim Kuhn is retiring from outfitting and this was our last hunt together at The Roost. Tune in for a mix of hunting stories, Roost memories, and plenty of laughs, as we celebrate friendships, family, and the places that mean the most.
