Join us in conversation with renowned songstress and author, Adele Bertei, as we weave our way through the life and times of Sinead O'Connor, courage in the name of justice, and the healing power of song. Adele is an anti-disciplinary author, director, performer, and composer currently residing in Los Angeles, CA. She is the author of Peter and the Wolves (Smog Veil, 2020), Why Labelle Matters (University of Texas Press, 2021), Twist: Tales of a Queer Girlhood (ZE Books, 2023), and Universal Mother (Bloomsbury 33 1/3, 2025).   Bertei was an original member of the critically lauded Contortions, produced by Brian Eno on the seminal No New York LP. Reading prose and poetry, she opened for writers such as William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, and Kathy Acker among many others. Bertei acted in several underground films, including a lead role in Born In Flames by Lizzie Borden.   Bertei was lead singer in the Bloods –America's first openly queer band of women, and has performed and recorded as a backing vocalist and touring vocalist for artists such as Tears for Fears, Thomas Dolby, Culture Club, Whitney Houston, Sandra Bernhard and Sophie B. Hawkins among many others.   New York City's Museum of Modern Art recently acquired films of Bertei reading her poem The Ragazzi Manifesto in 1978, and The Offenders by Scott and Beth B., where Bertei plays the lead.   She has created and facilitated songwriting workshops for homeless youth at My Friend's Place in Hollywood, and as a member of Wayne Kramer's Jail Guitar Doors, teaching songwriting to the incarcerated at the Twin Towers facility in downtown LA, and at Century Women's Regional Center at Lynwood, the largest women's jail in the nation.   Her next book, No New York: A Memoir of No Wave and the Women Who Shaped the Scene, will be released in early 2026 by Faber & Faber UK.   Thanks to my producer and editor, Lucas Bakker @Iamlucasbakker- whose original music and soundtrack weave the Blue Medicine Journal podcast all together!

This week's episode is dedicated to the memory of legendary guitarist, singer, songwriter, producer and film and television composer Wayne Kramer, who passed away recently.  Wayne was far more influential than many realize as his band MC5 basically invented punk rock a full decade before it even emerged as a genre. The band and its albums became a model for punk bands on both sides of the Atlantic. In fact, The Clash even wrote not one, but two songs about him! A formidable player, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked Wayne as one of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. He also collaborated with a who's who of rock's most elite artists over the years, and his scoring work can be heard on films like Talladega Nights, Step Brothers, the HBO comedy series Eastbound & Down, ESPN's 5-4-3-2-1, In My Own Words, and Under The Lights, and even for the “Unlabeled” Jim Beam commercial. Musical accolades are well and good, but I think what Wayne was most proud of was the fact that he was able to overcome his  personal trials with drugs and jail time. He emerged from this darkness transformed, and then went on to save countless lives through his tireless acts of service. He was extremely passionate about his work with Jail Guitar Doors, a program that provides guitars and music lessons for inmates at more than 50 penal institutions throughout the United States. Through the years, he regularly played concerts with an all-star band at prisons around the country. During this interview from January 6th, 2022, we talked about why musicians from Detroit have a special edge to them, why the MC5 was banned from radio, how going to prison saved his life, getting into film scoring, and much more. This is a replay of an interview that I did with Wayne via Zoom from his studio in Los Angeles. var podscribeEmbedVars = { epId: 96191804, backgroundColor: 'white', font: undefined, fontColor: undefined, speakerFontColor: undefined, height: '600px', showEditButton: false, showSpeakers: true, showTimestamps: true };

This week, I'm speaking with Wayne Kramer. When it comes to lives, Wayne has lived several. As the founder of seminal rock band MC5, he began his musical career at just 16 years old. By 1967, the MC5 were serving as the house band at the Grande Ballroom and Wayne was working full time. As racial tensions reached a fever pitch around the the country and in his hometown of Detroit, he crossed paths with poet and activist John Sinclair who shared his revolutionary fervor and would become a mentor throughout his life.Shortly after the MC5 imploded, Wayne found himself in federal prison, which he documents at length in his book, The Hard Stuff: Dope, Crime, the MC5, and My Life of Impossibilities. After serving 2 1/2 years of a 4 year sentence, Wayne headed to New York City where he remained for a decade, playing music, continuing to use drugs, and living what he describes as the same year, ten times.In the mid nineties, Wayne began a new life in Los Angeles, where he signed a recording contract and began touring only to see his efforts come crashing down as a result of what he calls, ‘an inside job'. Tired of carrying on the facade of sobriety, Wayne turned to Bob Timmons to help him take the steps toward a better life. Now 24 years sober, Wayne discusses how talent isn't enough, why he thinks NWA picked up where MC5 left off, and his work with the C.A.P.O. Center and the non-profit Jail Guitar Doors, named after The Clash song he helped inspire.Please enjoy Wayne Kramer on The Days Between..

For their many downsides, the past few years have offered an opportunity to reflect and reconnect with friends, family, projects. For Wayne Kramer, 2022 represents a full-throated embrace of a specter that's loomed large for decades. This year, the musician released the first new songs under the MC5 banner in more than half-a-century. It's a reinvigorated collective that culminates next month's arrival of Heavy Lifting, the first LP under the moniker since 1971's High Time. Kramer's been plenty busy, of course, through solo albums, collaborations and film scores. He's also become one of pop culture's most vocal advocates for prison reform and the founder of Jail Guitar Doors, a project that supplies musical equipment for inmates. Ahead of the album's release, Kramer discuss his musical and personal journey. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

On this week in 1977 The Clash released their self titled debut album. It would finally get a US release in July of 1979. It's considered one of the greatest punk rock albums of all time. In a 2017 Billboard article marking the album's 40th anniversary Kennith Partridge wrote, "The self-titled debut album by The Clash is about as punk as it gets. Released April 8th, 1977 in the U.K. and later in America, where CBS execs deemed it too raw for polite consumers, 'The Clash' is a thin and scratchy rapid-fire cataloging of problems big and small. It's about race relations, unemployment, and American cultural imperialism. Also: zit-faced burglars and loners pleasuring themselves with condoms on." AllMusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine wrote, "The Sex Pistols 'Never Mind The Bollocks' may have appeared revolutionary, but the Clash's eponymous debut album was pure, unadulterated rage and fury, fueled by passion for both rock & roll and revolution."In this episode we'll take you back to the making of the album that was written and recorded in less than a month, the stories behind the songs, the album cover and a whole lot more. The Power of Music with Paul ILL “Most people love to listen to soundtracks with the most emotional resonance with them.” — Paul ILL (23:24-23:30) Did you know that music has the power to influence your emotions? No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music because it can barge into the soul with no boundaries or limitations. In this week's episode, let's talk about the power of music with my guest, Paul ILL. Part One of ‘The Power of Music with Paul ILL’ Life-long bassist/songwriter PAUL ILL counts playing with the WILLIE DIXON FAMILY BAND at Mr. Dixon's wake, tracking live in a London studio with TINA TURNER, playing and songwriting with CHRISTINA AGUILERA, PINK, ALICIA KEYS and performing with BOB WEIR as career peak experiences. He is a graduate of the prestigious Berklee College of Music, who, as a studio bassist, has played on recordings that have sold over 20 million records. He has sold more than 4.5 million records as a songwriter Paul has active copyrights with Christina Aguilera, Pink, Courtney Love (Hole), Michael Des Barres, and Juliette Lewis.   His recording and touring credits include the afore-mentioned Tina Turner, Bob Weir, Annie Lennox, Linda Perry (whom he counts as a crucial influence and mentor), Courtney Love, Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys, Pink, Daniel Powter, James Blunt, Michael Des Barres, Mick Taylor (Rolling Stones), Bill Ward (Black Sabbath), and Wayne Kramer (MC5) to name a few. “Look at the great songwriters that we all love of every generation. They can take you someplace in a very short amount of time.” – Paul ILL (21:01-21:09) Paul is a "first call" studio musician, songwriter, orchestrator and arranger for esteemed record producers such as Jack Douglas, Little Steven Van Zant, Guy Chambers, Michael Lloyd, Bobby Owsinski and the previously mentioned Linda Perry. The iconic Tom Dowd also made use of Paul's bass playing. "I owe Jack Douglas a lifetime debt of gratitude for his mentorship early in my career and our continued friendship and creative collaborations." Throughout his career, Paul has created music for film and television.   He co-wrote the theme music for the annual Comedy Central Awards show, including many cues and songs explicitly created for numerous network and independent films and TV shows. The list includes but is not limited to The David Attell Show, The Gong Show, Fast Track to Fame, and The Missy Elliot Reality Show.  He has composed scores for numerous independent films, most recently "Any Day," by writer/director Rustam Branaman, featuring Sean Bean. He, along with Bobby Owsinski, is the co-author of "The Studio Musician's Handbook," published internationally by Hal Leonard Music Publishing. Currently, Paul is an MFT Trainee who utilizes Narrative therapeutic concepts and non-traditional approaches to offer transformational experiences to a very diverse client population. He teaches songwriting for Jail Guitar Doors at the California Institute for Men.   Part Two of ‘The Power of Music with Paul ILL’ According to Paul, with the advent of digital technology and the way music is created now, it's not the same anymore compared to the golden age of 60s, 70s, and 80s. Nonetheless, it's a matter of what context you're creating as a musician, the energy you portray, and what culture you're producing. His decades of experience as a successful songwriter and professional recording musician combined with his progressive applications of holistic health practices combine to facilitate positive change for individuals, couples, families, and organizations. “There's value in getting back to our roots, experiencing, and playing music.” – Dianne A. Allen (28:44-28:49) Over the years, he has created a compendium of interactive, individual, and group experiences that empower clients to transform through the processes of songwriting and music creation geared for the non-musician from any age group or cultural demographic.   Paul finds narrative songwriting as a therapeutic tool. I can relate to that because I grew up listening to classic songs since my mom was a concert pianist. I fell in love with instrumental music, especially saxophones. Music has a durable, healing nature that serves as a good force in anybody's life. Music brings life and color to the world. It can evoke emotions, especially if the lyrics of the song convey the story of your life. It has become more than just a form of entertainment. It has become a source of therapy for those who are looking for new ways of healing.  If you're having a rough week, think about the soundtrack with the most emotional resonance. Grab your favorite drink, listen to your favorite song, consider its powerful effect on your health, and have fun. There’s just too much awesome for your face when we kick out the motherf***in riffs with the one and only Wayne Kramer. This is a very unorthodox episode – not much riffin, mostly interview. The first half is mostly Teddy delving deep into Wayne’s history with the MC5, while the second half is Mitcz and Teddy delving into Wayne’s political contributions, and an in-depth discussion of prison reform. This episode is going on our top shelf like a trophy.
