Dr. Guenther also shares profound insights on transgenerational trauma, drawing from his studies with Thomas Hubel and his time with Indigenous cultures in Canada. After beginning his career as a surgeon and family doctor, Roland grew disillusioned with the mechanical approach of conventional medicine and sought a more holistic path. He was introduced to homeopathy early in his career, captivated by its alignment with spiritual teachings and its remarkable efficacy in treating severe diseases. With a deep passion for spiritual healing, Roland spent years studying Native American traditions, living with the Blackfoot people and the Huichol in Mexico, where he connected with nature and learned sacred practices. In 2005, he immigrated to Canada, where he now focuses on both individual client work and teaching homeopathy, with a particular emphasis on C4-homeopathy, which explores the spiritual dimensions of healing. Roland also leads Shameeah Workshops across North America and Europe, fostering heart-to-heart communication with nature and all living beings. Dr. Patrick Hanaway is a family physician and leader in functional medicine. He served as Chief Medical Education Officer at the Institute for Functional Medicine and as Founding Research Director at the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine. Following his recovery from Stage IV cancer through an integrative approach, he incorporates both modern and indigenous healing practices into his work, drawing on his initiation as a Mara'akame by the Huichol people of Mexico. In this episode, Dr. Hanaway shares his transformative journey from doctor to healer, reflecting on the profound interplay between science and spirituality in medicine. We explore the importance of uncertainty as a source of aliveness, the evolving paradigms in Functional and Lifestyle Medicine, and the challenges and opportunities of building institutions for holistic health. Patrick delves into the metabolic theory of cancer, offering a deeply personal perspective on how imbalance manifests in the body and society, and emphasizes the need to reconnect with the sacred in medicine through practices like fire ceremonies and community rituals. This conversation invites us to reimagine healing—not as fixing, but as creating balance, insight, and connection in every aspect of life.

In this soft-spoken sleepy story, I tell you the stories of four ghost towns in America:- North Brother Island, New York, a small uninhabited island that once had a large hospital and kept the infamous Typhoid Mary in quarantine for over two decades.- Bodie, California, a well-preserved mining town that boomed in the 1870s thanks to the discovery of gold deposits. I tell you a little about the California Gold Rush, Express companies like Wells Fargo, and the decline of this once-thriving town.- Real de Catorce, Mexico, another mining town that can only be accessed via an underground tunnel and is a pilgrimage place for Huichol people and Christians.- Villa Epecuén, Argentina, a lakeside resort that was submerged and spent 2 decades under salty water, until the water withdrew and revealed an eerie landscape. Both the hexagon and the Merkaba symbolize the number 6. It is the first perfect number, meaning that 6 is both the sum and product of its factors: 1 + 2 + 3 = 6 1 X 2 X 3 = 6 https://www.britannica.com/science/perfect-number The number 6 is the symbol of the Law of Correspondence, i.e. as above so below. In other words, it is the equilibrium between the microcosm and the macrocosm which mirror each other. It also represents the concept of fractals which are repetitive patterns that can be scaled to any size. In the Merkaba, the descending tetrahedron represents Spirit or the divine feminine principle, while the ascending tetrahedron represents matter and the divine masculine principle. It symbolizes the embodiment of the Divine (your light body, your soul) into the organic form. In this state, creation naturally occurs and it becomes easier to connect with higher frequency beings and Source. https://www.flowerofsound.com/the-hidden-meaning-behind-the-hexagon https://www.aurahealth.io/blog/spiritual-meaning-of-a-hexagon https://www.soul-flower.com/blog/hexagrams-meaning-sacred-geometry HUICHOL art - the truth of space time https://www.museumofbeadwork.org/blogs/news/teaching-tuesday-huichol-beadwork

I'm so pleased to welcome Mark Allen back to the show! Mark, aka “The Grip,” is also the greatest triathlete of all time, and he's here today to share many of his unique insights and spiritual approach to grueling endurance sports. Mark, a contemporary of mine from the triathlon circuit, is now one of the most prominent coaches in the triathlon scene today. Get ready for a wide-ranging conversation that covers everything from Mark's early racing days and the things he would do differently knowing what he knows now to the adjustments he had to make at the end of his career to doping in elite sports. As the conversation winds along, you'll get to hear more of the spiritual side of Mark that he has become known for as he talks about the many years he has spent working with a Huichol healer and the retreats they put on together, as well as what he has learned from the time he has spent with other native Huichol people in Mexico. Even if you are not a triathlete, the insights you will get from this show can be applied to all our peak performance goals in life! TIMESTAMPS: Mark Allen is one of the most prominent coaches in the triathlon circuit. What would he have done differently? [00:47] After the break from Covid, the competition has really been fired up. [05:43] This year in Kona, the women had their separate race on Thursday, while the men raced on Saturday. [08:02] Mark and Brad discuss doping in the profession. Shelby Houlihan got a bad deal. [12:51] Many athletes don't understand the best way to recover. [15:56] How do you take that fitness and then continue to build it without burning yourself out? [21:05] What does overreaching mean? [24:17] The signs of exhaustion from overreaching are (1) Slowing down in your swimming and (2) having a hard time getting your heart rate up, even though you feel like you're pushing really hard, and (3) You can be out for a run and get full of lactate. [29:25] What is different that the guys now are breaking 8 hours in the Ironman? [31:34] If Mark could do something different, what changes would he make? [41:59] One of Mark's training ideas was actually training his mind to deal with boredom. [48:13] If the aspect of recovery had progressed as much as the aspects of training, we'd see more amazing results. [51:03] Are we still battling the influence of the ego or the constraints of technology? [57:10] In today's world there is no downtime with social media. [01:03:55] Since Mark's last big race in 1995, what has his fitness journey been? Without consistency, as you age, your body falls off quickly. [01:06:58] Anybody out there who is not exercising at all or as much as they want, you know it doesn't feel good. Be consistent with your exercise. Don't back off. [01:16:20] Mark spends time among the primitive population of Huichol Indians in Central Mexico, and has learned a whole new way of living. This week I'm speaking with Chef Sean Sherman. Growing up on the Pine Ridge Reservation, Sean had plenty of time to explore the wide open spaces provided by the South Dakota Badlands. Equipped with a natural curiosity, Sean developed an extensive knowledge of the edible flora surrounding him which he has utilized throughout his career. Self-taught, Sean learned to cook at a young age using available ingredients and a healthy dose of creativity.Rising through the ranks of the Minneapolis food scene of the early 2000's, Sean found himself in an executive chef position in just a few short years. Having reached a point of being overworked and burnt out, he packed a bag and headed to Mexico. Encounters with the native Huichol sparked a passion to learn more about his own culinary heritage, which would ultimately result in Sean opening the Tatanka food truck and his restaurant Owamni.A three time James Beard Award winner, Sean founded the non-profit NĀTIFS with a mission among other goals, to educate tribal communities and younger generations about indigenous culture, in an effort to counter centuries of American Colonialism. During the course of our conversation we discuss hustling sushi, his chosen moniker ‘The Sioux Chef', and why he doesn't serve fry bread. Please enjoy Chef Sean Sherman on The Days Between..

If you walk down any American main street, you'll find a coffee shop or three. If you love coffee, you can thank George Howell: The man that grew the culture behind coffee consumption in the United States and beyond. George Howell is a renowned entrepreneur and the Founder of George Howell Coffee. He has been expanding the art, appreciation and knowledge of fine coffee roasting since the 1970's. George is a powerful storyteller, telling us how he spent the past 50+ years spreading unbridled enthusiasm for coffee, art and fair trade practices. George Howell was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Specialty Coffee Association of America in 1996, for having raised specialty coffee quality standards to a new level through his Massachusetts-based company The Coffee Connection (1974 – 1994). He had grown The Coffee Connection into 24 company-owned stores in the Northeast and sold his high-quality popular coffee company to Starbucks in 1994. He returned to coffee-traveling worldwide, and in 1997 worked on models of economic sustainability for coffee farmers under the United Nations and the International Coffee Organization. This led directly to the founding of the precedent-setting Cup Of Excellence program in 1999; it established the world's first international estate coffee competition and international internet auction that mightily contributed to breaking the commodity/price cycle for craftsman farmers in the specialty coffee industry. George Howell is a pioneer of the fair trade system. While founding George Howell Coffee, he sought quality producers that were just as passionate about outstanding coffee as he was. To this day, George Howell Coffee pays these farms top prices for green coffees, far exceeding Fair Trade pricing. In order to assure mutual education and trust, George and his daughter Jenny visit the farmers they work with and form lasting partnerships. Enjoy Part One of this Two-part series with entrepreneur, connoisseur and compelling storyteller George Howell. Great entrepreneurs lead with passion and purpose George grew up in New Jersey then Mexico City, raised with a love of language, art and culture. Before George began roasting coffee, he discovered Mexican indigenous Huichol artists. Quickly realizing that their work was unappreciated, he sought to help Huichol artisans show their work on the national stage. He was met with condescension. Defined as ‘folk artists', the Huichol peoples' work was devalued and discarded. But George saw what we see today - that these artists produced work that was every bit as thoughtful, unique and important as European painters and muralists. Meanwhile, George developed a love for coffee - which he did not yet see as a business opportunity. George was determined to bring Huichol art into museums on the East coast. He and his pregnant wife, Laurie packed their two children into the car and headed East. He packed his french press and coffee grinder. The family stopped at Howard Johnson's motor lodges along their route and George would grind their coffee in the mens' restrooms, leaving behind a captivating aroma most Americans had never smelled before. After using hot water to brew their coffee right there in diners and parking lots, people would come up to them and ask, “What are you doing?” Big things begin with simple ideas Showing art wasn't paying the rent. George and Laurie got to work thinking of things they could do to make money, help artists and make an impact. This led to the creation of The Coffee Connection - named by Laurie Howell. The Coffee Connection was a simple idea: The Howell's wanted to share their love of art and coffee with the world. It combined two things they cared about, paid the bills and built community. They never could have hypothesized the growth and scale their dream would take over the next few decades. After an initial press boom and surviving the coffee freeze that hit Brazil in 1975, The Coffee Connection continued to expand. During the height of the espresso obsession of the 1980's and 90's, they were adding a new café every two years. After rebuffing Starbucks' advances multiple times, The Coffee Connection was successfully acquired by Starbucks in 1994, led by CEO Howard Schultz. An exciting coffee comeback After The Coffee Connection was sold to Starbucks, George devoted himself to transforming the coffee industry for the better. He worked on sustainable farming and coffee production policies at the United Nations and the International Coffee Organization. He was making the impact he always wanted to make - but he found himself longing to return to the formation of new cafés. Be sure to tune into Part Two of our conversation with George Howell to hear how George Howell launched his signature East-coast cafés, further developing coffee culture and nurturing a love for quality coffee unlike any other. Quotes “It became a ritual to wake up to a great cup of coffee - no milk, no sugar because it was good just the way it was.” “We moved East, by car with two kids and number three on the way. It was February or March 1974. I brought coffee with me, and a little french press and grinder, just for Laurie and me. We stopped at the Howard Johnson's along the way. I would grind the coffee in the mens' rooms, always leaving the bathrooms smelling a lot better after we left. And we would order hot water…like, for tea. We'd brew our coffee right there at the Howard Johnson's. We'd always have two or three people who were having breakfast there who would come up and say, ‘what are you doing! What's that!'” “We realized that we could win on both sides by opening up a café where we could exhibit art and sell great coffee.” “The enthusiasm was so incredible. Literally within the first three months, we were overwhelmed with customers coming in there. The media was coming in. The locals were coming and filming us!” “We were successful with the people we were hiring because they were so enthused. We learned very quickly that the best salespeople were the people who spread the excitement by contagion. That was the best you could ask for!” “I'd rather go broke selling great coffee than make a fortune selling garbage.” Links mentioned in this episode: Visit the website for George Howell Coffee at https://georgehowellcoffee.com/ Follow George Howell Coffee on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/ghowellcoffee/?hl=en and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/GHowellCoffee/

Holding a Ph.D. in (Ecological) Economics and having studied international development, political science, and management, Thomas Legrand works in the field of sustainability for UN agencies, private companies, and NGOs. His focus is on forest conservation, climate change, sustainable finance, and organizational transformation. His spiritual journey began at the age of 23 with an encounter with native spirituality in Mexico, before embracing the wisdom of a wide range of traditions and practices, including meditation, energetic healing and Tai-chi-chuan. He lives with his wife and their two young daughters near Plum Village, the monastery of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh in the South West of France, his country. His spiritual search, his thought as a social scientist and his professional experience have gradually converged on the importance of spiritual wisdom in humanity's ongoing transition. Searching for a way to mainstream this understanding in the political and sustainability conversation, he has dedicated much of the last 10 years to researching and reflecting how we can radically rethink our model of development. The result is his book, 'The Politics of Being: Wisdom and Science for a new Development Paradigm' which synthesises so many of the foundations of Accidental Gods - the merging of a universal spirituality, grounded in connection with the web of life, and a political and social framework for a new way of organising ourselves and each other. In this wide-ranging conversation, we discuss how Thomas first encountered shamanic spirituality and then explore the ideas that are the backbone of his book: how do we shape our new reality and, crucially, who is already doing so? Jez Hughes Shamanism, Author of Wisdom of Mental Illness, Huichol Mexico Today on the podcast I am talking to the author of 'The Wisdom of Mental Illness' Jez studied Shamanism intensively for over twenty years. Yet, his healing journey began thirty years ago when, as a teenager, he experienced a fit that propelled him into an altered state of consciousness far more powerful, yet intrinsically linked, to the one that surrounded him. It took a long time to integrate that experience and find healing for the physical and mental disturbances it initiated which included ongoing convulsive fits, anxiety, psychological breakdowns and minor psychotic episodes. This journey, he now understands as a 'shamanic sickness' lasted on and off for around 17 years and took him through various healing and spiritual traditions and all across the earth, until he finally came home to shamanism and found practical methods to cure himself. This training is ongoing and for the past eight years he has worked closely with the Wixarika (Huichol) nation of northern central Mexico, hosting many senior Marakames (shamans) as they have shared their ceremonies, culture and medicine with Europeans for the first time in their history. Outside of shamanism he has worked for Friends of the Earth, The Prince's Trust, as a professional actor and a published poet and is a practising astrologer and tarot reader. His first book- 'The Heart of Life- Shamanic Initiation & Healing in the Modern World'- was published in November 2015 by Moon Books. His new book ‘The Wisdom of Mental Illness- Shamanism, Mental Health & the Renewal of the World' is an excellent read. In this episode of The Mama Psychedelia, I welcome the first papa to the show, Robin Clements, a dear brother and teacher of mine in the realms of conscious breath and life. In this conversation we hear some of Robin's life journey coming to conscious connected breath, love and fatherhood. He shares with us his own experiences as a birth partner and witness of his beautiful wife Eden (mama on episode 2 of the show) and his experience welcoming his two angelic babies to this earth. Brant Secunda is an internationally acclaimed shaman, healer, and ceremonial leader in the indigenous Huichol tradition of Mexico. During an intensive 12 year apprenticeship, Brant became the adopted grandson and close companion of Don José Matsuwa, the renowned shaman who passed away in 1990 at the age of 110. Brant's initiation into the Huichol tradition began when he was 19 years old, and rights of passage during his apprenticeship included completing a five-day vision quest without food and water in the sacred Cave of Grandmother Growth, capturing and releasing a wild rattlesnake with his bare hands, enduring a 14-month fruit fast to enhance his sensitivity to the natural world, and surviving an extended nine-day vision quest to learn the language of the gods. For nearly 40 years, he has led conferences, workshops, and retreats around the globe, has been a lecturer at the Mayo Clinic, the American Holistic Medical Association Conferences and a faculty member of the Five Branches Institute of Chinese Medicine. He co-authored the award-winning book Fit Soul, Fit Body: 9 Keys to a Healthier, Happier You, and he is a co-founder of the American Herbalist Guild, the Peace University in Berlin, Dance of the Deer Foundation Center for Shamanic Studies and the Huichol Foundation.Brant tunes into today's conversation from his home in Santa Cruz, CA. He introduces us to the practice of Huichol Shamanism, and shares stories of the ways that he learned from Don José—slowly, methodically and almost by osmosis of simply spending time together, completing daily tasks of growing corn, listening to rivers, gathering around the fire and each day deepening his understanding of the earth cycle's and the language of the plants, animals and natural elements.A humble man of gentleness and humor, Brant reflects on his friendship with India Supera, founder of the Feathered Pipe Ranch, and Pat Kennedy, a late Cree elder that included Brant in Montana-based Peace Encampments that brought together leaders from various indigenous traditions in the U.S. and Canada. We talk about the importance of laughter medicine, connecting to nature and what it means to “find your life,” a saying in Huichol Shamanism that Brant shares in his workshops. This conversation flows much like one big prayer or ritual. I invite you to slow down and take this in, not just filtering the words through your mind, but seeing if you can tune into this episode with your entire body, your heart and your spirit. The beauty is in the simplicity, and you may be surprised what transmits.Shamanism.comSupport the show (https://featheredpipe.com/gratitude/)

As we continue to explore the origins of myth and culture, let's take a look at the symbolism behind the deer and the stag. Sometimes referred to as the Sky Deer or Sun Deer, this animal is an integral part of shamanic traditions all across the world with close ties to both sun and moon worship, but also connected to the rituals of life, death, and resurrection and often marking the path to awakening or enlightenment in traditions as varied as Bon, Celt, Huichol, Scythian, and Shinto. Podcast: This week on the show we feature an in-studio conversation with Antonio Ramirez Hernandez. Antonio Ramirez started learning about shamanism in 1982 when he started to have experiences that were difficult to understand with rational logic. He started to seek guidance until he found the Foundation for Shamanic Studies. He studied with Michael Harner, taking several workshops including the Three Year Program in Advanced Shamanism. Antonio eventually found Medicine Person, Lorin Smith, from the Kashaya Pomo tribe. He became a student, and Lorin expanded Antonio's views about shamanism. Their relationship lasted until Lorin's death on January 15, 2019. Part of Antonio's training has included with plant medicine in the Amazon, in the Mazatec mountains, and with Huichol healers. He is currently writing two books: one about learning from Lorin Smith and another called Contemporary Shamanism. Antonio holds a Master's degree in Psychology with a concentration in Drama Therapy and a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology (both from CIIS). He is nationally and internationally recognized for creating CECEVIM, a methodology for working with Latino men to teach them how to stop violence to their partners. He is the author of Violencia Masculina en el Hogar (Masculine Violence in the Home) (2000 - Editorial Pax, Mexico) and of the chapter "CECEVIM - Stopping Male Violence in the Latino Home" for the book Programs for Men Who Batter (2002 - Civic Research Institute). In addition to his shamanic work, Antonio's academic interests include gender studies, especially concerning masculine identities; the psychological impacts of culture on individuals and families; and transpersonal psychology. Daniel Moriarty has been an herbalist for the past 40 years inspired by his mother a Hungarian herbalist specializing in Woman's health. Later in life, Daniel chose the Adaptogenic class of herbs to study because of their broad spectrum of healing properties while being non-toxic to the organs. He was inspired to progress his studies based on a life-threatening incident that happened in Jalisco Mexico that really opened his eyes to the healing nature of plants for the people. In the mid-1970 Daniel was stung on the left shoulder while fast asleep by a venomous scorpion Centruroides Sculpturatus. He was traveling in Mexico at the time. He awoke instantly in considerable pain, and within minutes was having extreme difficulty breathing, along with uncontrollable salivation and tunnel vision. By chance, a local fisherman was in his camp and immediately recognized the gravity of the situation. He knew of a Huichol native living nearby and went to get him on foot. After a short while, the Huichol native arrived at the camp with a root that he had picked in the jungle (his medicine chest). He made tea from the root and instructed Dan to drink it while it was very hot. Upon drinking the tea, Dan was able to breathe freely again within minutes. I have no doubt that this man and his plant remedy (guaco) saved my life, Dan swears to this day on his life. After Dan was quickly nursed back to health from the brink of death, he decided right then and there to devote all his energies to learning about herbs. Dan's mother's advice to him was to master one herb at a time to gain the wisdom needed to formulate in a balanced manner to have maximum effect. Daniel has done martial arts for most of his life and is a black belt in Judo and a 2nd black in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and turns out excellent student that have won champion-level competitions. He has always used Adaptogenic herbs to heal himself and others
