“If we train our children only to harvest, who will plant the seed?”I wrote those words after contemplating the short-sightedness of so-called, “performance marketing,” on March 11, 2010.“Performance marketing” is the new name for direct response advertising. It works best when it extracts the value from a well-known brand. Its objective is to bring in a lot of money quickly.That is why business owners are attracted to it.But here's the caveat: value cannot be extracted from a brand unless it has first been created. You cannot squeeze a good reputation dry unless you first build a good reputation.Do you see the problem? When you have finally squeezed the last ounce of value from a good reputation, you don't have a good reputation anymore.As I was contemplating that last line I just wrote, the words “extraction of value” popped into my mind. I typed those words into the Google search bar. The AI Overview that appeared at the top of the page whispered to me in a conspiratorial tone: “‘The extraction of value' refers to the process of capturing or appropriating value from other stakeholders, often through exploiting a monopoly or manipulating competitive market processes, rather than creating new value.” – WIKIPEDIAThe eight words that leaped out of the paragraph were, “exploiting… or manipulating… rather than creating new value.”Do you remember that famous scene in the movie There Will Be Blood when Daniel says to Eli,“If you have a milkshake, and I have a milkshake, and I have a straw… There it is. that's the straw, you see? Watch it. Now my straw reaches acroooooooss the room and starts to drink your milkshake. I… drink… your… milkshake! I drink it up!”That is the voice of performance marketing.The healthy alternative to performance marketing is sales activation within a relational ad campaign.Sales activation is like shearing the wool from a sheep. You can do it again and again and the creature is never diminished by it.Performance marketing is like slaughtering that poor sheep, piece by piece. Beginning with being the webmaster for the Beastie Boys in the early 1990s, Ian Rogers' career took off and helped forge the digital music landscape as we know it today. In 2003, Rogers was plucked to head up Yahoo's $140 million music service and spent the next twenty years bringing digital music to the mainstream—after Yahoo, with Beats and then Apple. In 2015, he helped launch Apple Music and Beats 1, their digital streaming channel. This week I'm speaking with Ian Rogers. As a kid growing up Indiana, Ian's only plan was to smoke weed and ride skateboards for the rest of his life, and while he has managed to accomplish those goals, Ian has also established himself as one of the most influential voices of the digital age. From music, to fashion, to finance his ability to successfully navigate the intersection of human beings and technology is second to none and it is executed with a humility that only the Midwest could produce.It was as a student at Indiana University where his passions for music and computers would collide, resulting in one of the first music streaming platforms, a feat of engineering that he would continue to refine for more than two decades, culminating in the launch of Apple Music in 2015. Ian Rogers moved from Silicon Valley to Paris in 2015 when he was appointed chief digital officer of LVMH. There, Rogers, a veteran of Apple Music and Beats, was tasked with building out the luxury conglomerate's e-commerce and data strategy and serving as a digital whisperer to executives.   Background: Now, he's chief experience officer of Ledger, a security system that provides protection for digital currencies. Given his experience at the cutting edge of both tech and fashion, he is uniquely positioned to speak to the opportunities being created as crypto technologies, gaming and fashion converge. In his mind, one day, virtual fashion will be ubiquitous.  His insights were originally featured in the fourth episode of The BoF Show, “Dematerialisation: Why the Metaverse Is Fashion's Next Goldmine,” streaming on Bloomberg Quicktake.    Key Insights  Rogers' background in the music industry has helped inform the way he perceives' luxury's need to take control of digital channels. Record labels lost out big on recorded music because they were in denial of consumers' desire to listen to music online.  Having goods that are both digital and physical, or, “phygital” is the gateway to the existence of purely virtual goods. In order for virtual goods to have real value and meaning, there need to be marketplaces and venues for using them.  People have a desire to collect things. With the rise of NFTs, there's a way to create scarcity digitally — which gives fashion brands an opportunity to create virtual goods based on the principles and hype and rarity that drive the industry today.  The biggest misconceptions people have is that there's a distinction between the physical and digital worlds, according to Rogers. The blurring of realities in the metaverse will ultimately change our perceptions of what's real — and valuable.
