This week Dr. Kim is talking with Tristan Pettyman about motherhood and music. Tristan Prettyman is an American singer/songwriter and mom who has formally been signed with Virgin Records. She released her first major label album “Twentythree” in 2005, followed by her second album “Hello” which was released in 2008, followed by a third studio album, Cedar + Gold, which was released in 2012. Her newest singles “Letting Go” from 2020 and “Same Page” and “Waste My Time” released in 2021 are available now! http://tristanprettyman.com
This week I'm speaking with Tristan Prettyman. As a songwriter, she has had plenty to say about love over the course of her career. From the pain of an engagement ended, to young love lost, Tristan has suffered her fair share of heartache, and at times very publicly. Her ability to channel those experiences into song, set Tristan on an unconventional career path that led to a major record label debut shortly after finishing high school. Her personal mantra of just saying ‘yes' and choosing the road less traveled, created opportunities that only re-enforced the strength of her own internal intuition, and combined with a work ethic inherited from her father, set the stage for much of her success, including what she calls her most important to date, motherhood.A proponent of self work and therapy, Tristan offers her experience navigating the end of a marriage, learning to co-parent, and her ever evolving definition of love. Whether you're single, married, or someplace in-between, Tristan's story is proof in the power of vulnerability to lead us to places we may never have imagined for ourselves, but are often times, exactly where we belong. As she shares, life may play out different than we expect, but by remaining open to possibility and allowing our egos to take a back seat, different can actually mean, better. Please enjoy Tristan Prettyman on The Days Between..

Part 1 of 2. On this episode of Rock & Roast, Caleb and Ben talk to producer, tech, and musician, Justin Glasco. They talk about Justin growing up in a musical home with a vocalist father, college, making the move to Nashville, first jobs, first tours (as a tech and as a musician), attitudes in the industry, and little about his time with The Lone Bellow. They also mention some of the gear they all use to record and the difficulties of recording albums in a global pandemic in person and online. This is part 1 of a 2 part conversation with Justin. A self-proclaimed quality control freak splitting time between Los Angeles and Nashville. Credits include session work with artists such as Andrew Bird, Christina Perri, Avril Lavigne, Blake Mills, Matt Berninger (The National), Tristan Prettyman, Bo Burhnam, Dan Wilson and writing collaborations with Cary Brothers, Wild Rivers, Emerson Hart, Serena Ryder, Anderson East and Meiko. Justin was most recently a creative contributor and drummer for Nashville-based Americana band, The Lone Bellow. The band released their third album in September 2017, produced alongside Dave Cobb, with additional production by Glasco at his personal studio. The album includes songs written while touring internationally with the band for three years. He is currently busy working on upcoming releases from Meiko, David Redd, Amie Miriello, Madison Malone, Lucy Clearwater, Hugh Masterson and Brian Elmquist (The Lone Bellow) and a slew of incredible talent with a new live project called Stories. Mona Tavakoli is a Los Angeles-based drummer, singer and performer who believes in making music that unites, elevates and connects. While Mona is equally comfortable performing as a drummer and a percussionist, she is especially known for adapting the cajón to unexpected genres such as rock and pop. With her first three recordings, 2003’s The Love EP, 2005’s breezy twentythree and 2008’s Hello, Tristan Prettyman parlayed her smoky alto voice and laid-back surfer-girl-from-San-Diego charm into an eight-year career studded with highlights that included Hello’s No. 2 position on the iTunes Digital Albums chart and headlining tours across the U.S., Europe, and Japan. But instead of capitalizing on the attention and immediately making plans to record a third album after wrapping two years of touring in support of Hello, Prettyman took an extended break during which she traveled the globe, had surgery to remove polyps on her vocal cords, got engaged to her long-term boyfriend, dealt with the pain of his ending the engagement, and eventually questioned whether she even wanted to be a musician at all. “I was really burnt out and uninspired, so I decided to take some time off,” Prettyman says. “I went to Bali, Australia, and Europe and kind of went crazy. Life went from all these obligations to eating good food, meeting amazing people, and flowing with the wind. Then when I got back and tried to sing again, we found the polyps, so I had surgery and had to recover. Through it all, I was one foot in and one foot out of whether I wanted to do music at all. I had periods of time where I was numb and immune to feeling. My walls were up really high and I was on my guard. Then this fairy-tale picture of what my life could have been was set on fire. That brought all my walls down; it was a relief to finally feel something again.” Prettyman chronicles the experience on her new album, the raw, emotionally charged Cedar + Gold, which finds her sifting through the wreckage of her relationship and emerging stronger on the other side. “I started writing songs from a place that was so deep and honest, where I didn’t hold anything back,” she says. “It felt so good. I was like, ‘This is what music is about — being able to release what is trapped inside of you.’ Whenever anything ached or caused me pain, I’d tell myself, ‘Save it for the record.’” With an artistry that lies in her finely etched lyrical details and intimate vocal performances, Prettyman spares no one, including herself, on songs like “Say Anything,” “I Was Gonna Marry You,” “Come Clean,” “Glass Jar,” and “Never Say Never,” which ends a heartbreaking spoken-word outro: “You can’t start a fire in the pouring rain.” Prettyman wrote several of the songs with Dave Hodges, whom she first met the morning after a particularly emotional night. “I go meet Dave and I’m late and I’m crying,” she says. “I’m just a ball of snot, like, ‘Hi, I’m Tristan and I’m a mess.’” That session yielded the completion of the album’s opening track “Say Anything” — an open-hearted tune about finding freedom in letting go. The second session resulted in the no-holds-barred “I Was Gonna Marry You.” “It was like, ‘Wow, I’m getting really transparent here and being really specific,’” Prettyman recalls. “But once I walked through the door of honesty there was no telling where I was going. I’d never spoken out before about the way it really was, but I found myself saying ‘Screw it, I’m going to tell the whole story.’” As intense as some of the songs may be, the mood is tempered not only by playful, lighthearted tunes like first single “My Oh My” (“about someone still having their hand on you and you playing that game with them because it’s fun, even though you know it’s not good for you and it’s going to backfire”), “The Rebound,” “Quit You,” and the sexy, smoldering “Bad Drug,” but also by the album’s warm, earthy sound, which Prettyman created with her producer Greg Wells (Adele, Katy Perry), who plays piano, bass, drums, and some guitar on the album. “Greg told me he was not going to hold my hand through this; I had to convince him I wanted it,” she says. “He forced me to step into really being a musician and owning what I do. Once I did that, I got super creative and the songs started coming from a different place. It was a very intuitive process.” When mixing on Cedar + Gold wrapped, Prettyman went back to her hotel room and burst into tears. “I couldn’t believe it was done,” she says. “I got everything out. It no longer lived in me. It felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. I finally felt free.” Cedar + Gold (whose title refers to both the cedar walls and ceilings in the home where she recovered from her heartbreak and the gold she spun from her situation in the songs) is an album that manages to be both deeply personal, but highly relatable to anyone who’s had the ground collapse under them and fought their way back to healing. “It’s actually a very hopeful album in a lot of ways, which I think is a common theme in all my records,” she says. “The idea that ‘things may be a bit crappy right now, but let’s make the most of it’ is very reflective of me as a person and my outlook on life. I always try to look at the bigger picture of why something is happening. And I love that I was able to go so deep and dig around in places I never thought I could access and still remain hopeful at the end of the day.”
Most people know today's ocean mama, Tristan Prettyman for her music, beauty, and authenticity. I personally remember her music from the surf flick Shelter over a decade ago. As a singer-songwriter out of San Diego California, Tristan was invited to join Jason Mraz, her former fiancé, on his Natural tour back in 2006. Tristan has received much notoriety for her music and albums, like her song Hello's No. 2 position on the iTunes Digital Albums chart and headlining tours across the U.S., Europe, and Japan, but what people may not know about this mama is that she has done a lot of inner work to get her to where she is today and is very invested in health and wellness. She has used life hardships, one that was very public, to propel her to her highs. She also talks candidly about divorce, co-parenting and doing the inner work. Today she shares about: Starting backwards with motherhood; Tristan reflects on the major changes motherhood brings to our identities How she felt returning to music as a new mom How she thought she'd return to music after 6 months and it took a lot longer Creativity and how it has morphed and changed as a mother How her public split from Jason Mraz changed her for the better even though it was one of her toughest lows Authenticity and speaking her complete truth in her music How speaking our truth connects us as mommies Moving from lows to deep inner work How she just wanted to be home with Kilo instead of going on tour when he was little Her whirlwind marriage, birth of her son and divorce to Kilo's dad Co-parenting; why it doesn't have to be contentious Living intentionally Moving into the health and wellness arena in her life and becoming a coach How speaking our truths connects us Keep an eye out for the new website moving to square space where you can check out past episodes and my NEW COURSE Uncover your Purpose in Ten Steps! Korby Lenker, Megan Slankard, and Alex WongThese three amazing singer/songwriters stopped by CAU on their way to perform at "Space" in Evanston. That was over a year ago and the files were lost, but now found. Check out the Bio on these artists and you can see just how amazing they areKORBY LENKER: Korby Lenker is a sneaky-good songwriter. And singer. And multi-instrumentalist. An abbreviated list of Lenker's achievements so far includes: a significant amount of airplay on the legendary Seattle indie rock station KEXP; a BBC 2 interview with Bob Harris, which is only about the highest honor a rootsy singer-songwriter touring the U.K. can get; opening slots for acts ranging from Willie Nelson to Ray LaMontagne, Nickel Creek, Keith Urban, Susan Tedeschi and Tristan Prettyman; a successful run with one of the hottest young West Coast bluegrass bands of the aughts; and wins in the Merlefest folk songwriting contest as well as the Kerrville Folk Festival's elite New Folk songwriting competition. Lenker's composition "My Little Life" brought him the Kerrville honors this year. It doesn't seem possible that one song could work so well in such disparate worlds, but it also proved its powers as a galvanizing piece of indie-pop, drawing a small army of likeminded, rising Nashville artists and personalities--Jeremy Lister and Katie Herzig to name two--to make lip-syncing, ukulele-strumming cameos in Lenker's music video. MEGAN SLANKARD: "Nearly everyone who encounters this attractive and sophisticated singer-songwriter agrees that she has 'star' written all over her," says Acoustic Guitar Magazine about Megan Slankard. "She forges a distinctive sound with her smooth and courageous vocal dynamics, intelligent and diverse song styles, and sheer infectious enthusiasm." Slankard, who has sold just over 20,000 copies of her three CDs, self-produced her first CD at age eighteen and her third with help from Counting Crow's guitarist Dan Vickrey, and is currently working on a new project. Last year Slankard formed a new alt-rock band, and is already getting industry attention having been selected as a semi-finalist in Discmaker's 2007 Independent Music World Series and a finalist in the 2008 Musician's Atlas/Borders Books Independent Music Awards - even before the official release of her new band's first album, scheduled for mid-2008. Slankard and her music have appeared on TLC's "What Not To Wear", generating purchases by TV viewers after her first appearance that placed her second CD "Freaky Little Story" on the 5 spot on Amazon.com CD sales charts and on the Top-10 Rock Bestseller list on CDBaby.com. Because of the episode's popularity, the show's producers featured her in a follow-up episode, bringing her back onto the Top-10 with "Freaky Little Story". Upon its release months later, "A Little Extra Sun" also reached the Top-10 sales chart. Her songs have also earned over 175,000 plays on MySpace.com, and "Freaky Little Story" remains a Top-20 all time Rock Bestseller on CDBaby.com to this day. Slankard's music has also been featured on San Francisco AAA station KFOG's compilation CD and has been spun over 500 times on Modesto, CA. She has been featured in Rockgrl Magazine, Owl Magazine, The Synthesis, and online sources Fresh Tracks and Women In Rock, in addition to Acoustic Guitar magazine, whose editors named "Freaky Little Story" one of their top albums of 2005. She was a final selection artist for RPM Direct Presents: Unsigned Artists Volume 3 compilation CD; an A&R Online featured artist; a Song and Film Spotlight artist; and, an Acoustic Cafe featured artist on the "One to Watch" syndicated radio program (sponsored by the USA Songwriting Competition). Slankard also co-wrote and performed on the title track of Dire Straits founding member David Knopfler's new record, "Ship of Dreams". Megan has performed in over 200 cities in five different countries, including at showcases in Boston (NEMO) and Toronto (NXNE), on three tours as support for David Knopfler (Germany and England), and at the international festival InGuitar in Zurich (Switzerland). She will resume touring after the completion of the new CD. ALEX WONG: Alex Wong is a Brooklyn-based producer, writer and performer whose signature sonic style resonates in all he creates-from cinematic pop soundscapes to electronic tinged theater scores to his honest, direct songwriting. He has produced recordings with leading artists such as Delta Rae, Ari Hest, Elizabeth and the Catapult, Melissa Ferrick, Vienna Teng and Grammy nominee Ximena Sarinana. Alex has garnered critical acclaim for his songwriting collaborations with recording artists Amber Rubarth (The Paper Raincoat), Vienna Teng, Paul Freeman, Elizabeth and the Catapult and Alex Berger (Independent Music Award winner). His songwriting has been heard in film and television projects such as "The Last Song" (Disney/Touchstone), "One Tree Hill," and "The Lincoln Lawyer" (Lion's Gate). His solo project, A City On A Lake, is releasing it's debut self-titled album (featuring vocal performances from Ari Hest and Ximena Sarinana) was released in 2012.Click to view all four videos from this Podcast
Join us this week as we welcome pop funk music singer songwriter, Devon. Rising indie artist Devon has issued “Heart,” the first single from her forthcoming sophomore album, "What If I" Soaked in the emotional sun-draped acoustic-pop leanings of Colbie Caillat, Jason Mraz, Troye Sivan and Kate Voegele, the Philly based singer wrote and produced the song herself, which included adding the breathtaking harmonies of renown vocal group, The Bishop’s Choir, to help achieve the spiritual gravity of its heartfelt sentiment. Devon says about her new single "Heart", “This song is about letting someone into your life and allowing them to mean something to you. It seems like everyone nowadays is afraid to love - the ones closest to you can hurt you the most. I wrote this song when I realized that some people are worth it. It is worth it to love and to be loved, to be vulnerable, to let someone mean something to you, even if it breaks your heart.” In describing her musical sound she says "My sound could be described as pop-funk, but why stop at that? I'd say my music sounds like a variety of instruments that collide with the Counting Crows, N*Sync, Tristan Prettyman, and you!" We will talk to Devon about her upcoming schedule, get a behind the scenes look at her music, feature her latest songs, and ask her to share her message for the troops. Please be sure to visit Devon at https://www.facebook.com/DevonMusic and spread the word. Fans are welcome to call in and speak live with her during the show (718) 766-4193. And as always we will give shout outs to our deployed military listeners. Our message to the troops: WE do what we do, because YOU do what you do.

Looking back on the past 14 episodes there is one general theme that comes to mind and that is Sausage Fest. The LMP has been severely lacking in female musicians, so far there has been half of Rodrigo y Gabriela and a few female guest performers here and there. That all changes with this episode where I will be featuring singer/songwriter Tristan Prettyman. I often refer to Tristan's music as a female version of Jack Johnson. I'm not sure if this is due to the relaxing acoustic melodies that they both share or that Tristan also grew up as a competitive surfer. Regardless, they are two of my favorite musicians to listen to when I want to kick back and relax. Tristan's live shows are primarily a solo affair, but this concert also features Jen Lowe on percussion which really helps fill out her songs. This concert was taped at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City on February 05, 2006. Thanks goes out to Christopher Jones for recording it. So I'm back from vacation and am very excited to post episode #7 of the LMP featuring G. Love and Special Sauce. This concert was recorded at the House of Blues in San Diego, January 31, 2007 by way of the sound board and as you might expect it is very high quality. If you are new to G. Love, his style crosses genres all the way from blues to hip hop, but there really isn't a single definition for it. This recording really stood out to me because of the great sound and also the guest tracks featuring San Diego natives Slightly Stoopid and Tristan Prettyman.
