In guardia! Delaney Zimlich, an adaptive athlete, shares her run story in an interview. Her parents started training for the 2014 Forest Gump run and saw another girl in a wheelchair using gloves to participate in a 5K race. Delaney became fast friends with this girl, Shandy Oliver, and got involved with the running community team called Ainsley's Angels. She started participating in races, including Disney races and found that training significantly impacted her performance. She also shares her perspective on how races can be better for adaptive athletes, including having an adaptive category listed on race registrations and bike escorts for lead athletes to ensure safety. Delaney also discusses the importance of having awards for adaptive athletes in races, as not all races offer them. Finally, she explains that an adaptive athlete is someone who uses a hand cycle, push rim, or other assistive devices to participate in athletic activities.Delaney started Krew of Kindness to give back to her community and help with adaptive recreation. Krew of Kindness has sponsored special needs camps, partnered with local organizations, and organized family-friendly Mardi Gras balls as fundraisers. They have also engaged in service projects such as sewing pillowcases for hospital rooms to make them brighter and cheerier. They have partnered with Distinguished Young Women and created pillowcases with different designs, including Disney characters, for children at the hospital.Delaney ZimlichJenni Zimlich - https://tinyurl.com/yu8eft27Races MentionedForest Gump RunTrick or Trot - https://tinyurl.com/2vwbfnwwDisney Race - https://tinyurl.com/469aw8rbHouston 5k and Marathon - https://tinyurl.com/yc2khwecBattle of Mobile Bay - https://tinyurl.com/3jc8zushSea Turtle Half Marathon - https://tinyurl.com/2p897xpkAzalea Trail Run - https://tinyurl.com/bdfvpny4Senior Bowl 10kShout OutsShandy Oliver - https://tinyurl.com/4kxppt5xAinsley's Angels aka My Team Triumph - https://tinyurl.com/y2jry3etCammie's Ice Cream - https://cammiesolddutch.com/Tatyana McFadden - https://tinyurl.com/2zzpjscyBlue Bell Bombers - https://tinyurl.com/5ba5pt97Melissa Auld - https://tinyurl.com/mdd2ajwfSteve Taylor - https://tinyurl.com/4kkfhzz5Daniel Romanchuk - https://tinyurl.com/4d6jr6u7Keith Evans - https://tinyurl.com/2s39zpztKrew of Kindness - https://tinyurl.com/5b9usbmpChildren's Miracle Network - https://tinyurl.com/yuhjsy22USA Children's and Women's Hospital - https://tinyurl.com/24x3nk72Lake Shore Foundation - https://www.lakeshore.org/PSupport the showFor more details on Run Your Story happenings, including signing up for our upcoming training program, visit https://runyourstory.com/For web development, coding tutoring, or tech services, visit https://gaillardts.com/Go Run Your Story and take a piece of this story with you! This week I'm speaking with Tatyana McFadden. Born with Spina bifida and paralyzed from the waist down, she spent the first six years of her life in a Russian orphanage with very little medical attention. Without a wheel chair to aid her, Tatyana learned to walk using only her arms, and in doing so began building the physical strength and mental will power that would eventually lead to her becoming the fastest woman in the world. In 2004, Tatyana made her Paralympic debut in Athens as the youngest member of Team USA, where she took home the first two of her medals at just 15 years old. She has competed in every Paralympics since, and in the summer of 2021 took home the twentieth medal of her career at the Tokyo games. It was during her freshman year of high school where Tatyana first experienced the discrimination people living with disabilities often face, setting her on a path of advocacy, resulting in the passing of ‘Tatyana's Law', which requires schools in the state of Maryland to give students with disabilities equal access and the opportunity to compete in interscholastic athletics. A law which would ultimately became federal legislation.Having 24 World Major Marathon wins under her belt, including four consecutive Grand Slams, her passion for racing and impact on the sport is undeniable. During the course of our conversation, we discuss her humbling foray into the Winter Games, the drive that keeps her going on and off the track, as well as the importance of perception. With a natural humility and accomplishments that have at times even surprised herself, please enjoy Tatyana McFadden on The Days Between..

Born with spina bifida and without the use of her legs, Tatyana McFadden spent her early childhood in an orphanage, learning about self-reliance and inner strength while walking on her hands. Encouraged to participate in athletics by her adoptive American parents, Tatyana would ultimately grow up to dominate wheelchair racing, thus far winning 20 Paralympic medals and 24 major marathons. Throughout her racing career, and during her fight for equality in sport, Tatyana has relied on her mental strength to overcome challenges—a high-pressure lawsuit, a career-threatening condition—establishing herself as a leader as both athlete and advocate. In this inspiring, singular conversation with Crisis Text Line's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Shairi Turner, Tatyana reflects on the foundations of her mental health, who she turns to for support and what strategies she's established to get to the starting line with confidence, clarity and perspective.
Trained's Jac Byrer introduces Nike's new podcast, a limited series called No Off-Season, and its hosts from Crisis Text Line, Dr. Shairi Turner and licensed social worker Natalia Dayan. Featuring in-depth, personal conversations about mental health with athletes like Karl-Anthony Towns, Laurie Hernandez, Raven Saunders, Tatyana McFadden and more, No Off-Season will run right here—Tuesdays on Trained's feed—for the next few months. In centering mental health, No Off-Season asserts that there is strength in asking for help, power in sharing our inner experiences, and healing in community. From dealing with loss to working through depression and anxiety to overcoming trauma, the stories presented on No Off-Season show those of us facing mental health challenges that we are not alone and serve to unite all of us around an issue with universal impact. Crisis Text Line, a Nike nonprofit partner, provides free, 24/7, high-quality text-based mental health support and crisis intervention by empowering a community of trained volunteers to support people in their moments of need. "I feel like if we could parallel in sports with Paralympics and marathons and wheelchair racing, we can also help parallel disabilities in communities. A lot of our idols come from sports figures. We can really give back to our own communities and make sure people with disabilities have that chance to get an education and hold a job. A lot of athletes who compete in the Paralympics go home and try to get a job and they can't. That's not only a U.S. issue. It's a global issue. That's the important part. I feel like if we can make that change in sport, we can make that change in the community. It's an important responsibility, especially if you're a current athlete, to give back to the sport. Previous athletes, who were once my competitors but then retired, they did the same thing. They pushed the sport along the way." I had the opportunity to record with Tatyana McFadden the day before she won her 24th major marathon at the Chicago Marathon. She got on a plane and headed to compete at the Boston Marathon, where she made the podium with a runner-up finish. In our pre-race conversation, we talked about all things Paralympics, her role as a producer and star in the Netflix documentary "Rising Phoenix" and her advocacy work to change the way people think about disability, diversity and human potential. Episode three of this WeThe15 mini-series of A Winning Mindset: Lessons From The Paralympics sees Paralympic Games legend Tatyana McFadden quiz Amina Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations. As part of the WeThe15 global campaign, the IPC are working with over 20 organisations, including the United Nations, to spark global conversations on the topic of disability rights Launched ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, WeThe15 aims to end discrimination towards persons with disabilities and act as a global movement publicly campaigning for disability visibility, inclusion, and accessibility. “The campaign is really important now because what it's done is brought down the barriers to have those conversations, and not to feel you can't. Many people have the fear of making a mistake or being improper, and so they start to look past or over you. So this initiative is really important to bring things down to our level, because we don't get it. It's a brilliant way of opening up that space.” Alongside Mohammed, Team USA's Para Athletics legend Tatyana McFadden moved into the role of presenter after appearing in the first series as a guest. McFadden, now preparing for her sixth Paralympic Games, is looking to add to her phenomenal tally of 17 Paralympic medals. Her 17 Paralympic medals tell only a small part of the story of Tatyana McFadden. Not many athletes have had such a profound affect on daily life. In America, she's changed the law. Tatyana was born in the Soviet Union with spina bifida and talks about her early life in an orphanage and the hardships she had to live through. She talks about being adopted and building a new life with her parents in the United States. She developed a love of sport and at just 14 she was determined to make the US Paralympic team. It was a whirlwind year and on her first overseas trip she won a bronze medal in Athens in 2004. But the experience was ultimately disappointing. The stadium in Athens was empty and there was little celebration or coverage of Paralympic athletes back home in the USA. So she decided to try to change that! In this podcast series we're hoping to give you a greater insight into performance sport. We're finding there's always a lot to learn. So who are we? Ellen White is an England footballer who has been to 3 World Cups. Richard Whitehead is a Paralympic sprinter who won gold in London and Rio. @trackandballpod

USA's Paralympic multi-medallist Tatyana McFadden tells her story from scooting around her orphanage in St Petersburg, to changing legislation in the USA to allow equal opportunities to sport for kids with disabilities as well as her sporting career spanning four summer and one winter Paralympic Games. As well as reliving many Paralympic stories, McFadden talks about how she is driven by a purpose that goes beyond winning medals. "I had to fight to be allowed to train. I was denied the right to run alongside other athletes and I thought 'this is not how it should be'. We're setting the stage of teaching people it's okay to discriminate people with a disability. So I wanted to do something about it. So I sued for no money, no damages, but the right for the opportunity to participate in high school sports. It was the hardest battle as a high schooler to go through for four years." She also talks about why telling the Paralympic story in Netflix's Rising Phoenix was so important to her, and how they broke new boundaries in film-making by ensure that 16% of the people working on the film had a disability. Tatyana McFadden is a 17-time Paralympic medalist, 24-time major marathon winner, a multiple world record holder and an author. Now, she can add producer to her impressive list of credentials. Reset checks in with the world-renowned Paralympian about her work on the new Netflix documentary Rising Phoenix, and what she wants people to take away from the film.
In the first episode of A Winning Mindset, Jonnie Peacock, Great Britain's double Paralympic 100m champion sits down with Andy Stevenson to recap his life and career as one of the world's most famous Paralympians. He talks about growing up with one leg after contracting meningitis, the importance of family, his two gold medals, and how he wanted to change perceptions about disability by appearing on Strictly Come Dancing. Peacock talks about what drives him and the importance of the relationship with his mum in motivating him. He explains the role of expectations and how he has defied expectations to achieve his goals. The star of London 2012 also reveals the nerve-wracking seconds before winning gold at his home Paralympics. “I remember they walked us out like gladiators and I'd never heard a noise like it.” From home glory to his Rio 2016 gold medal, Peacock was elevated to new heights and in this episode, he speaks of how his rise led him all the way to the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing, becoming the first person with a disability to compete on the show. “I wanted to be the first disabled person on there but not to have people talk about it. I didn't want that to be the reason they voted for me.” Peacock stars in the powerful new Netflix film about the Paralympic Games called Rising Phoenix, which debuts on Wednesday 26 August. The film, which stars Prince Harry alongside Peacock, and other Paralympic athletes like Bebe Vio, Tatyana McFadden and more, charts the rise of the Games and the individuals who make it. “That film blew me away.” Peacock also talks about how the Paralympics are changing perceptions about disability. He talks about the importance of inclusion, and how as a young kid, he wanted to play football with his mates, not get involved with disability sport. Peacock also discusses how the postponement of Tokyo 2020 due to Covid-19 has affected him, whether his career will continue to Paris 2024 and what the future holds for himself and the Paralympic Movement as a whole. We also ask the big question: could we see him in the 200m at one point? Allianz is a long-standing partner of the International Paralympic Committee. We speak to seventeen time Paralympic medallist Tatyana McFadden and director Ian Bonhote ahead of the release of a major new film about the Paralympic movement. McFadden is one of nine athletes featured in Rising Phoenix and she recalls spending time in a Russian orphanage, being adopted and moving to America and then being reunited with her birth mother at Sochi 2014. McFadden tells us she isn’t ruling out competing in another Winter Games and that she hopes to continue her career until the Los Angeles Paralympics in 2028. Ian Bonhote has previously worked on advertising campaigns with Lionel Messi and Tiger Woods and he tells us it was important to give the athletes in Rising Phoenix their own spotlight. He also tells the story of Jean-Baptiste Alaize. The French athlete – who features in the documentary – witnessed his mother’s murder as a child and was hacked with machetes and left for dead himself. David Diamante speaks to us ahead of Katie Taylor’s world title fight against Delphine Persoon. Diamante is one of the most recognisable ring announcers in boxing and he tells us how he got into the sport, why he says every fighters surname twice and explains just how seriously he takes his role in announcing the results. Diamante also reflects on being clean of drugs for twenty seven years, saying: “living sober is absolutely wonderful”. Cheryl Foster joins us after she was promoted to Uefa’s list of elite referees. The Welsh official tells us she had been due to take charge of one of the quarter-finals in the Women’s Champions League this week before the Covid-19 pandemic and a subsequent lack of match action ended her hopes. We catch up with Australian swimmer Chloe McCardel after she broke the men’s record for the number of English Channel crossings. She reached thirty five after completing four crossings in recent weeks. In Sporting Witness we go back to the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, when the performance of the Indian women’s hockey team inspired a Bollywood film. And – with live sport continuing this weekend we look ahead to the Champions League final and we check in at the AIG Women’s Open golf and the second test between England and Pakistan. Our guest in this episode is Tatyana McFadden. Tatyana is a 17-Time Paralympics Champion! Listen and be inspired as Dr. Rao talks with Tatyana about where her strength comes from, and how she is someone who doesn't see herself as different from anyone else.
“I never thought of myself as someone who was different.” —Tatyana McFadden Tatyana McFadden is one of the most decorated athletes on the planet. She's a 17-time Paralympic medalist, and she has won 24 World Marathon Majors. In 2013 alone, she won the Boston, Chicago, London, and New York City marathons. In 2015, she shattered the New York City Marathon record by 7 minutes and 20 seconds. But Tatyana wasn't born into success — she was born in Russia with Spina Bifida, a disease that left her paralyzed from the waist down. She spent the first six years of her life in an orphanage, crawling on her hands because she didn't have access to a wheelchair. At six years old, everything changed: Tatyana was adopted by Deborah McFadden, who at the time was the Commissioner of Disabilities for the Bush administration and happened to be at the orphanage on a business trip. Tatyana moved to the United States, was introduced to sports as a way to get strong, and by 15 was competing at the Paralympics. In addition to her outstanding athletic accomplishments, Tatyana is an outspoken advocate for people living with disabilities, and later this spring she'll complete her master's degree in pursuit of a career as a child life specialist. Carrie interviews 17-time Paralympic medalist Tatyana McFadden! Tatyana discusses her advocacy work, bringing people together through the sport, and her career as a Child Life Specialist. Show notes for this episode can be found at ctollerun.com. Tatyana McFadden There are very few athletes in history who have come from so little to accomplish so much. Born with a hole in her spine caused by spina bifida, Tatyana McFadden spent the first six years of her life in a Russian orphanage with virtually nothing, not even a wheelchair. Paralyzed from the waist down, and with no other way to move, she learned to walk on her hands simply to keep up with the other children. Little did she know that the powerful arms and hands she began to develop as a small child would someday carry her around the globe as one of the world’s greatest athletes. In 1994, Deborah McFadden, then Commissioner of Disabilities for the U.S. Department of Health, came upon Tatyana while visiting her orphanage on an otherwise routine business trip. She felt a connection, an inexplicable feeling that they were meant to be together. Deborah adopted Tatyana, brought her to the United States and gave her both a wheelchair and a new start on life. The transition was difficult and Tatyana’s health worsened so she was enrolled into various sports groups in hopes that it would build her strength. It did, and then some, and so began Tatyana’s extraordinary life as an athlete. Tatyana tried every sport she could find; wheelchair basketball, swimming, ice hockey, and even scuba diving. From the start she fell in love with wheelchair racing—a sport through which her powerful arms immediately brought success. At 15, Tatyana made her Paralympic debut in Athens in 2004. She was the youngest member of Team USA. She returned from Greece with her first two medals and a hunger to become the best. Two years later she was winning gold at the World Championships and setting a new world record in the 100–meter event. At the 2008 In London, in 2012, she added another four medals, three of which were gold. One year later, at the 2013 World Championships, she became the first athlete in history to win six gold medals at the same event. Her dominance was in full swing and she was still only 24. In 2016, at the Rio Paralympics, Tatyana continued her dominance in wheelchair racing by winning four gold and two silver medals, bringing her total count of Paralympic medals to 17. She was awarded several prestigious awards in 2016 including: • Best Female Athlete of the 2016 Paralympic Games, United States Olympic Committee • Whang Youn Dai Achievement Award, 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro for athlete who has performed at an outstanding level and overcome adversity and best exemplifies sportsmanship • ESPY Best Female Athlete with a Disability, 2016 Tatyana concluded 2016 by holding world records in the 100m, 400m, 800m, 1500m and 5000m. Tatyana challenged herself with the professional marathon circuit in 2009, and with her win at the Chicago Marathon, she set off an extraordinary string of first place finishes that is still going strong. In 2013 she won the Chicago, London, Chicago and New York marathons, becoming the first man or woman, able-bodied or disabled, to win the Grand Slam (four World Major Marathons in the same year) and then repeated her Grand Slam victory in 2014, 2015 and again in 2016. Always looking for a new challenge, and intrigued by the idea of returning to Russia to race, in 2013 Tatyana decided to give cross country ski racing a try in hopes of earning a spot on the Sochi Paralympic Team. With less than a year of on snow experience in her life, Tatyana made her winter Paralympic debut in Sochi and in a dramatic sprint to the finish line she narrowly missed yet another gold medal, settling for silver. In 2014 Tatyana graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in Human Development and Family Studies, and is returning to U. of I. to pursue graduate work in Education. When she isn’t racing or studying, she works as a national advocate for equal access for people with disabilities, is a lifetime member of the Girls Scouts, is on the Board of Directors of Spina Bifida of Illinois, and speaks to children and adults about healthy living.
There are many inclines along the course of the Boston Marathon, but they don't phase five-time champion Tatyana McFadden, who has overcome far greater obstacles in her time. In this episode, Tatyana sits down with B.A.A. CEO Tom Grilk and B.A.A. Board Member Cheri Blauwet to talk about her success and struggles both in and out of the sport. And, as Tatyana explains, if anything scares her, it's the early downhills of the Boston Marathon.
Tatyana McFadden was born in Russia with spina bifida - a deformity of the spine - and placed in a Russian orphanage. Aged six she was adopted by an American and became one of Team USA's most successful athletes. In the second part of the interview with the McFadden's, Tatyana's adopted mother, Deborah, talks about the rare illness which temporarily paralysed her from the neck down and Tatyana explains the snowy challenge she took on to meet up with her birth-mother. Presented by Beth Rose with Tatyana and Deborah McFadden. You can find a link to part one of the interview, From Russian orphan to Team USA, in the related links.
Tatyana McFadden was born in Russia with spina bifida - a deformity of the spine - and placed in Orphanage Three, Saint Petersburg. But at the age of six, a chance meeting with an American dignitary would change her life. She would discover wheelchair racing and go on to win 17 Paralympic medals and multiple marathon titles for Team USA, but there would also be a high profile legal battle against the US government. Presented by Beth Rose with Tatyana McFadden and her adopted mother, Deborah.
Record Paralympic medalist, multi-world record holder, Nike athlete, and Team USA wheelchair racer, Tatyana "The Beast" McFadden, joins The Brink of Midnight Podcast with John Brenkus. Born in Russia with a hole in her spine caused by spina bifida, Tatyana spent the first six years of her life in an orphanage. Six years without going to school, never using a wheelchair, and walking on her hands until Deborah McFadden, then Commissioner of Disabilities for the United States Department of Health, adopted her. Tatyana got her first wheelchair, and with her remarkable drive and determination, the rest is literally history. She made her first Paralympic Games in 2004 at the age of 15 and, in 2013, went on to become the first human being to win the grand slam of marathons - Chicago, London, Boson, and New York City. Tatyana repeated that same grand slam victory tour in 2014, 2015, and 2016! In 2016, she broke the world records in 100, 400, 800, 1500, and 500 meters. The very next year in 2017, Tatyana survived a series of dangerous blood clots that nearly killed her and she believes that marathoning saved her life. At the root of Tatyana's fierce competitive nature is her desire to live big, push limits, and grow. We all can learn a lot from Tatyana!
