This week I'm speaking with Liz Lambert. If you've visited Austin's South Congress over the last twenty years, chances are you have Liz to thank, though you may not realize it. While the pandemic certainly escalated the migration to the Live Music Capital of the World, the trend began far earlier, and one could argue that a sea foam green motel was the spark that ignited a wildfire.Shortly after leaving the Manhattan District Attorney's Office and returning to her home state of Texas, Liz found herself standing in the parking lot of the Hotel San José with a bottle of champagne in one hand and the keys to front door in the other, with nothing more than instinct and her fundamental understanding of what Christopher Alexander called ‘the quality without a name' to guide her.A trained storyteller, not even Liz could have written the adventure that would follow, which culminated in her transforming over half a dozen properties throughout Texas and Mexico as well as establishing herself as one of the most influential hoteliers of our time, only to see her legacy taken from her in a twist even Liz admits she didn't see coming. It's easy to draw parallels between Liz's experience and that of the town she helped to make famous, but as with any hero's journey, the road back leads to resurrection, and it's safe to say both stories are far from over.Often imitated but never duplicated, please enjoy Liz Lambert on The Days Between..

Bonfils Blood Center is now Vitalant. It’s a new name uniting more than 125 nonprofit blood donation centers around the country, allowing your blood donation to have an even bigger impact. While donations typically drop during the busy holiday season due to busy schedules and the onset of cold and flu season, the need for donated blood does not. Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs a blood transfusion for everything from car accidents and other traumas to organ transplants, to treat blood disorders and many other medical treatments that don’t make news headlines. Winter weather conditions can also lead to more accidents and the need for blood. It’s the blood already on the shelf that helps in an emergency. That’s why it’s crucial to maintain a safe and ready supply at all times. It takes about 24 to 36 hours to process, test and distribute each blood donation before it is delivered to hospitals. While all blood types are needed, there’s always an elevated need for type O blood. Type O blood is often used for premature infants and trauma patients – when there’s not time to test the patient’s blood type. Platelet donors are also needed. Platelets are primarily used in the treatment of patients undergoing chemotherapy. The shelf life of platelets is only 5 days—while whole blood or red cell donations can last 42 days. Learn more about donation types and what might be right for you at https://www.vitalant.org/Donate/Types-of-Donation.aspx. Individuals who are as young as 16 years of age (with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in general good health may be eligible to donate blood. It takes more than 3,000 blood donations each week to meet the needs of patients in our region and to be ready for unexpected events. As part of a 40-state network, your blood donation will go where and when it’s most needed at that moment, whether it’s across town or across the country. Through Jan. 13, everyone who donates at a Vitalant donation center or blood drive in our region will be automatically entered to win a four-night trip for two adults to Costa Mujeres, Mexico.Details are available here: CO: https://tinyurl.com/ybdgh8us RC: https://tinyurl.com/yd6at98g WY: https://tinyurl.com/ya8wbzrh As a special thank you, donors will receive a long-sleeve T-shirt, while supplies last:  Learn more about how to transform lives with us at vitalant.org or 877-25-VITAL (84825)

Do you remember the first time you stayed at a hotel? My first time was when I was just a kid. I recall my first experience with continental breakfast, specifically the unlimited hot-cocoa packets and futuristic waffle machine. I didn’t realize social etiquette required I probably shouldn’t take all the packets they set out in the lobby every day. But come on, who says no to free cocoa? Waking up, plopping the batter in the waffle machine, turning it on and excitedly waiting the three minutes was like a visit to Disneyland for me. While I wouldn’t bat an eye at those things now, I still believe it’s the little things in life that help us rise and shine and be our best selves every day. On this episode of the Skift podcast, we're talking about the conflict between Airbnb and hotels — and how some of them are actually learning from each other. In the Skift Take Studio backstage at the Skift Global Forum, we spoke to Amar Lalvani, managing partner of Standard Hotels parent company Standard International, and and Liz Lambert, chief creative officer at Bunkhouse Group. We had a separate conversation with Airbnb’s Global Head of Hospitality and Strategy, Chip Conley. Lalvani and Lambert spoke to contributing writer Jeremy Kressman, and Conley spoke to podcast host Hannah Sampson. Skift editor Deanna Ting also joins Sampson to add some insight into the conversations. This is one of several conversations we’re bringing you from backstage at the Skift Global Forum. The Skift Take Studio Series is presented by Mastercard, a payments technology company that is enabling loyalty, security and data solutions for the global travel industry.

The MFA in Applied Craft and Design welcomes Liz Lambert as part of the 2013-2014 Graduate Visiting Artist Lecture Series at the Hallie Ford School of Graduate Studies. Liz Lambert is “the avatar of cool for the inn crowd’s in crowd.” Thirteen years ago, Liz Lambert bought a seedy motel on South Congress Avenue, in Austin, and transformed it into the sleek, modern, high-end, achingly fashionable Hotel San José—an early sign of life injected into what is now the Capital City’s famously vibrant SoCo district. She’s done the same in Marfa, Houston, and San Antonio. Lambert will also be hosting graduate students from the Applied Craft and Design program to El Cosmico (Marfa) in March 2014.
