Nashville Council Member Olivia Hill—a U.S. Navy veteran and the first openly transgender person elected in Tennessee—discusses her lifelong journey of hiding, self-discovery, and ultimately embracing her true identity. She recounts brutal “blanket parties” in the military while overcompensating with a hyper-masculine persona, only to break free decades later and run for public office. Drawing on 40 years of utilities experience, she explains how her unique background helps her tackle infrastructure issues for all Nashvillians. Olivia highlights the power of everyday visibility, sharing stories of young trans kids finding hope in her leadership and reminding us that simply being oneself can foster real change.

This week I'm speaking with Olivia Hill. As Tennessee's first openly transgender elected official, Olivia ran her campaign focused on being the most qualified person to sit at the table. A native of Nashville with over three decades of engineering experience, Olivia's priority is helping to keep her hometown's underground infrastructure on pace with its above ground development.Raised by her mother to never give up, Olivia began the journey towards becoming herself at a young age. Having to reconcile an environment which told she should be one way, while internally feeling another, she spent her adolescence in constant turmoil and turned to the Navy in hopes of finding a solution. After nearly a decade, Olivia left a combat veteran with a myriad of skills, including how hide the parts of herself she needed to keep secret in order to remain safe.Upon returning to Nashville, Olivia began her 25-year career with Vanderbilt University where she would ultimately transition and in the process receive what she calls a huge education. Olivia never set out to make history, but in a state intent on making life more difficult for its transgender community, her personal experience makes her the perfect person to do so, and those who supported her candidacy appear to agree. It is my pleasure to present Olivia Hill on The Days Between..

Today we are talking about the characters in #iHunt by Olivia Hill. But first! Laura read a GREAT graphic novel that she thinks everyone should read. She also thinks we need to reevaluate our TV crushes from sitcoms in the 2000s-2010s. Hannah listened to a book that anyone who considers themselves a feminist should read, and gives us all some advice for our online dating profiles. Hannah also has watched some movies lately that spark an interesting discussion on relationships, consent, age-gaps, and sex work.Media Mentions:#iHunt by Olivia HillGood Talk by Mira JacobThe Mindy Project---HuluLumberjanes by Waters, Leyn, Pietsch, Laiho, Aiese, StevensonMighty Morphin Power Rangers by Kyle Higgins@jonesandthebooksFriends Talking Fantasy podcastHood Feminism by Mikki KendallThe Song of Achilles by Madeline MillerStranger Things---NetflixLove on the Spectrum---NetflixThe Gilded Age---HBOmaxDownton Abbey---NetflixHello, My Name is Doris---NetflixThe Hating Game---HuluGood Luck To You, Leo Grande---Hulu

We are at the beginning of the end! Today we are covering the first of our episodes on A Memory of Light, so buckle up because it's a long one! But first! Laura thinks her opinions on fantasy books may be skewed due to reading The Wheel of Time for the last year. Hannah has some great thoughts on how adaptations of books should grow with audiences and history, rather than remaining stagnant. Hannah and Laura then talk for a glorious hour and a half about the first half of the plot of the finale to end all finales. Laura has greatly enjoyed a show, but does a terrible job describing it to Hannah who becomes mortified by the show's premise. Hannah has recently returned from Thirstenland, and had a blast exploring Portland with number 1 fan @ronniereadsregularly. The health, wellbeing, and long-term care of Godolphin horses is of the upmost importance to them. I'll be your host this week on Epi238 of Succotash Shut-In which you are currently listening to. Last week in Epi237, show creator Marc Hershon had a conversation with returning guest and friend o' the show Chris Mancini. I urge you to check out that conversation. This week I have a hybrid show of sorts for you. I have a partial chat with none other than actor, songwriter, artist PROVOCATEUR…Andy Dick! (Full disclosure: We had severe technical difficulties while attempting to record and he had spent more than an hour the previous night soldiering thru similar sound difficulties on our end during an appearance on one of my other soundcasts Anti Social Show which I co-host with Hunter Block who was a guest on Succotash in Epi173: "Bein' Social with Hunter Block". Anyway, the audio we recorded that previous night will be featured in the hundredth episode of Anti Social Show but since that won't be releasing for at least a month, I wanted to follow up with Mr. Dick so that he could tell us about his current project Tiger Dick. There will be more context for that later.) I did say this show was a hybrid, and that is because I've also got three clips for you. I've got clips from Jock Doc Podcast, Battle of the Bald, and Trashy Trashy. There will also be an ad from our longtime fake sponsor "Henderson's Pants" and what will likely be the last reading from "TrumPoetry.com" which is a website that ABSOLUTELY exists, and there is a DOOZY capping off the whole ordeal it documents in poetic format which I will sample for you as it is too long to be included in it's entirety in this episode. CLIPS Jock Doc Podcast (featuring Dr. London Smith) Longtime listeners of Succotash might recall that Jock Doc Podcast was featured on the program back in Epi223: Revuein' Some Movie Review 'Casts (from) Oct 6, 2020. They are part of a small but mighty group of soundcasters who take the initiative to send us a clip of their show thus making it easier for us to listen to them and we did and do appreciate that sort of thing. As they have been very supportive to Succotash in the last six or so months I thought to myself "Yeah, I should probably clip something from them for Succotash..." and here it is, for those who have never heard that episode I will read the description from iTunes: "Improvised comedy with the premise of being a medical education podcast. Typical episodes include a medical topic, short sketches, and a strange guest. Listen as Dr. London Smith (.com) and his producer Cameron discuss medical topics with guests that Cameron finds not so boring!" Our clip is from January 17th, 2021, with Dr. London Smith and his producer Cameron discuss "Cor Pulmonale" with special guest Dr. Bill Butler Yeast (Neil Curran). Not so boring! Before the discussion of the titular condition there is a bit of chat in service of listener feedback which is the feature of this clip. Battle of the Bald This is the first time that this soundcast has been featured on Succotash Shut-In but it is no wonder as it's all extremely NEW. It's description reads: "A six-episode scripted comedy series about a young lab assistant who accidentally invents a permanent cure for hair loss and changes the world. The series was written and produced by Tyler Eaton and the first two episodes came out Monday, January 11th, with new episodes every Monday through February 8th." It stars Rebecca Usoro, Connor Cacciottolo, Jackie Kashian, Eddie Pepitone, Kyle Kinane, Olivia Hill, Shannon Dee and more. Our clip is from Epi1, called "Lab Rats", in which Sean Applewhite had seemingly found a miraculous cure for hair loss. The resulting product, Revitalize, skyrocketed him to fame and fortune. But when his fill-in assistant Francine stumbled upon a treasure... Trashy TrashyThis soundcast was previously featured in Epi216: Clippin' The COVID Blues Away from August of 2020, and Cassandra Cardenes was recently a guest during this past holiday season in our Epi234: Christmasin' with Cassandra Cardenes. The description of the show: A podcast for garbage people. We cover trashy news stories. Hosted by Cassandra Cardenes and Erika Curry. Our clip hails from just a couple of weeks back in January of this year, and it's been chosen to provide more context for the bit of chat with Andy Dick that follows it. And here we are again at the end of another episode. This one was pretty fun to put together. This episode was being written and assembled at the end of the crazy month of January 2021. It's being released in early February and I don't know if there is a release date for Tiger Dick yet but you can keep watching Andy Dick's Twitter @andydick and you can go to andydick.com for updates presumably and all things Andy Dick ...that are on the website. We have a website too where you can find what is somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 years worth of shows taking you thru the various iterations of Succotash as it brought you a relatively small portion of the ongoing history of soundcasting. Next week, join Marc Hershon for Ep239, I'm sure he will have something worth your while. We appreciate you. We appreciate your listening and your support over the years. If you wouldn't mind reviewing us for iTunes, Stitcher, Google Podcasts or wherever one can review soundcasts we would really appreciate it a great deal. Aside from showing us you love us by telling people about us, it's one of the other things that really helps us get to more ears in the coming years. Talk at you in two weeks, Be Decent To Each Other and Please…Pass The Succotash? — Tyson Saner

With Sean's driver Donny held hostage, the group will have to use Pistol's old World War II weaponry to turn the tables on them. Its absurdist, and weird, and fast paced, and just wonderful. It looks like they are taking a break to upgrade the system a bit and fix some bugs, but I look forward to its return. Stare Into the Sun! https://blaseball.fandom.com/wiki/Hellmouth_SunbeamsI also discuss the Play By Mail games I’m planning. I’ve worked out a few things about the style of game I want to run, now I just have to prep the actual games. One idea is a Dracula style horror game where the players communicate as experts by correspondence, investigating a strange series of phenomenon. The other game I’d like to run is a Mindjammer adventure set in a heavily inhabited star system, in which players each take a ship and track down leads. If either of these interest you shoot me an email and I’ll start a list.Mindjammer https://mindjammerpress.com/mindjammer/Dracula http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/345Door Games https://www.gamesrv.ca/==========Saying No - 07:40Failing forward is a very useful mechanic, just so long as you don’t use it to cover any sins. ==========#iHunt Review - 14:55I give an almost entirely positive review of the #iHunt RPG from Olivia Hill. Its a game of Millenial Horror, literally horror involving Millenials, Its like Ghostbusters if they were working themselves to exhaustion in the Gig economy. #iHunt https://machineage.itch.io/ihunt-the-rpgOlivia Hill https://twitter.com/machineivFate Horror Toolkit https://www.evilhat.com/home/fate-horror-toolkit/==========Wrapup - 27:55This episode is sponsored by Sarah’s Realm, she makes custom 1.5“ key chains, necklaces, and pin back buttons. View Transcript Youth Sunday Imagine a group of middle schoolers walking around Civic Park, carrying granola bars, water, and crackers to hand out to people who spend their days there. Claire, Roxy Freeman, Olivia Hill, and I were those middle schoolers, and we were in the midst of enjoying our first Denver Dive. While walking around, we spotted a fountain to rest and put our feet into so we could cool off from the extraordinary heat. Before we could even take off our shoes, we saw a man and woman who appeared to be homeless, dancing in the fountain. They saw us, four confused-looking middle schoolers, and approached. It turns out that the woman was a cancer survivor, and because of all of the medical bills, she and her husband no longer had a place to live. But they didn’t seem to be worried—they even seemed confident that everything would work out in the end. They chose to enjoy life despite their situation. Their energy inspired the four of us and our three leaders. Soon we were all dancing care-free in the fountain together. It’s times like these when I think of how the smallest of gestures can help change someone’s entire perspective. Even though we barely knew these people, they completely changed our outlook on homelessness as wide-eyed sixth graders, and now we think of the awesome things God gives us: great people who will dance in fountains with us, our health, and even just our day-to-day lives. We have the opportunity to make the best out of God’s greatest gift: life.
