THE BIG 4-0

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 5, 2024 155:38

On this special episode of THE BIG 4-0, Ron and Peter look back at the first SEVEN films from one of our childhood action heroes, Steven Seagal. ABOVE THE LAW (1988), HARD TO KILL (1990), MARKED FOR DEATH (1990), OUT FOR JUSTICE (1991), UNDER SIEGE (1992), his directorial debut ON DEADLY GROUND (1994), and his only theatrical sequel and arguably the end of his run as a major box office draw, UNDER SIEGE 2: DARK TERRITORY (1995). That's a lot of films and a lot of ground to cover, so apologies if we didn't do each film or his entire career justice. There are a lot of interesting discussion points left on the table, many touched on, but not fully explored - such as a deeper dive into his past and wild background claims (CIA and/or mob ties?), excellent/interesting supporting cast members we mention but don't trace the arc of their careers as we normally would (Sharron Stone, Pam Grier, Kelly LeBrock, William Forsythe, Jerry Orbach, Tommy lee Jones, Gary Busy, Erika Eleniak, Michael Cain, John C. McGinley, Joan Chen, Billy Bob Thornton, Eric Bogosian, Evert McGill, Morris Chestnut, and Kathrine Heigel, among others), how he always uses a .45 pistol the way Riggs and McClane always use a Baretta, his badass Bronco in MARKED FOR DEATH, the fact that he looks great - damn near hunky - at 40, no less, in UNDER SIEGE, Bassil Poledouris' awesome ON DEADLY GROUND score, and Seagal's music career (two actually-not-bad blues albums!), post-theatrical-direct-to-DVD period, TV career (A&E's LAWMAN), his fashion, political beliefs, and his legal troubles, both as an accused sexual predator and a falling-out with his producing partner Julius Nasso, which led to a real-life Seagal/mob altercation - but as a focus on just these seven films, how they've aged, and where we each rank them in his filmography, it's an in-depth, fun, and revelatory episode. Please remember to Rate, Like, and Subscribe, and we'll be back in 1984 next time to burn down the house celebrating STOP MAKING SENSE and PARIS, TEXAS's BIG 4-0s!

This week, I'm speaking with Nic Harcourt. When it comes to DJs, few, if any, have had more of an impact on popular culture than Nic. The confluence of his taste, audience, and the gift of timing have enabled him to soundtrack film, television, commercials and beyond. As host of some of the world's most influential radio programs, listeners have been treated to a daily playlist of Nic's favorite songs for more than 30 years. With a personal history as eclectic as his musical palate, and an appreciation having evolved into playing, music has been a constant during what has at times been a very chaotic existence. Nic's career has spanned the globe, but it was Los Angeles where he would ultimately settle, participating in nearly every facet of the music business in a hustle to make ends meet. During the course of our conversation we discuss his struggles with alcoholism, spinning records with Michael Cain, and why success has no longer has anything to do with what he does for a living. It is my pleasure to present the man who introduced me to Interpol, Nic Harcourt on The Days Between..

Meet Liam James Collins - an inspiration. Liam grew up in a poor area of London to salt-of-the-earth, hardworking self-employed parents. He was disregarded as a lost cause in the one size fits all U.K school system guiding him to forge his own path. Liam's entrepreneurial journey has taken many twists and turns over the years wrought with successes, failures, and just about everything in between. Starting out as an actor, Liam's unshakable self-belief and hustle led him to star in BBC dramas and various movies working alongside Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch, Cristian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Michael Cain, and Anne Hathaway to name a few. Liam's acting career later came to a screeching halt leaving him broke and without a way to pay his rent. “I went from acting alongside Tom Hardy on the set of Batman to literally delivering Tom's mail as a full-time postman.” Liam knew he needed to drastically rethink his future, so he re-trained as a Neuro Linguistic Programming Master Practitioner and Life Coach in 2017. Unspeakable adversity followed through a series of unexpected events including the loss of his father whom he loved and admired deeply. Despite these difficult times, Liam went on to Co-Found the fastest-growing global coaching academy - The Coaching Masters, which generated >$5M+ in its first 4 years achieving a valuation of $25M in 2022. Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

From Amy's imaginary friend to the Hero of Trenzalore, Matt Smith spent four years and more than a few centuries as the Doctor. So now that he's gone, how do we think he did? Notes and links Thank you very much to the listeners who contributed their questions to this episode: DJ Alpha-T, Frazer Gregory and Nathan Bottomley. Nathan claims to enjoy the idea that the Doctor is a somewhat problematic figure rather than just a traveller or a simple hero. Not everyone agrees, however. In this article in The Atlantic, Ted B Kissell complains that Matt Smith's Doctor, is in many ways, a fairly terrible person. As we said last week, Steven Moffat's actual quote was that Matt Smith is like “Patrick Moore in the body of an underwear model”. None of us seem to know anything about the ratings here, but The Day of the Doctor was apparently the highest rated drama for the year on the BBC, with 12.8 million viewers and an additional 3.2 million views on iPlayer. On BBC America, it had an audience of 2.8 million viewers, which was the highest rating ever received on the channel. Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

Doctor, listen to me. You can't die, you're too — you're too nice, too brave, too kind and far, far too silly. You're like Father Christmas, the Wizard of Oz, Scooby Doo. And I love you very much. And we all need you, and you simply cannot die. While Clara undergoes a gruelling Christmas lunch with her family, on Trenzalore, in a town called Christmas, the Doctor is doing what he has always done — protecting, defending and being far, far too silly. Goodbye, Matt Smith — it's The Time of the Doctor. Notes and links The Doctor's longest running companion, faithful Cyberhead Handles, is voiced by Kayvan Novak, an English comedian who plays ancient vampire Nandor the Relentless in What We Do in the Shadows. Worth a watch. Even before the fiftieth anniversary, it was widely reported that Matt Smith would be wearing a wig in his final episode as the Doctor. Here's an article from September 2013 on Digital Spy. Steven Moffat's exact quote was that Matt Smith is like “Patrick Moore in the body of an underwear model”. And finally, it's Matt Smith's Doctor who tells Clyde Langer that Time Lords can regenerate 507 times in the Sarah Jane Adventures story Death of the Doctor. It's the season for Dickens' A Christmas Carol. With all of the various adaptations (Alistair Sim, Patrick Stewart, Muppets and Michael Cain) which one should you choose this year? Well, I'm going to make the case that you should be reading A Christmas Carol instead. I'm going to talk about three aspects of Charles Dickens' a Christmas Carol that are often neglected: Jacob Marley's true cause for suffering; Fan meeting Ebenezer Scrooge at the school; and how time functions in the story. We get different accounts of time from Jacob Marley, the ghost of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. Does this miracle actually happen all in one night, or is Charles Dickens doing something more interesting here with time? We talk about Cain and Abel, Milton's Satan, and I make my plea for people to stop letting politics get in the way of family. If you find the discussion interesting at all, consider subscribing to the channel. We're trying to bring civility back to discourse one conversation at a time. The Weather ManDirected by Gore VerbinskiWritten by Steve ConradStarring Nicholas Cage, Hope Davis, Nicholas Hoult and Michael Caine.Released October 28, 2005.Budget of $22M ($29.2M in 2020)Box Office: $19M ($12.5M Domestic, $6.6M Oversea) ($25.2M in 2020)Gross: Movie was a flop, didn't make back it's original budget.IMDb: 6.5/10 Rotten Tomatoes: 59% Metacritic: 61% Plot:The movie opens with a montage of a dream job for Dave Spritz, the morning show Hello America as Dave practices his “weather moves” and introduces himself. He leaves his apartment and finds a ticket on his vehicle. After a contentious meeting at the DMV and picking up his daughter from dance, Dave drives his father, Robert, to a doctors appointment. Meanwhile his son Mike goes shopping at the mall and bumps into his councilor, Don.S: Very 2000's look/feel to the opening.-I hate Nic Cages hair-DMV writing/dialogue is TERRIBLE-His on-air weather character is ANNOYING-Who lets a 12 year old girl walk home alone in Chicago!?!-Michael Cain isn't likable. And what's with the weird, shitty accent?-Don is creepy AF, and the “catch ya later” when they leave… Creepy and weird.Dave is walking down the street and has a frosty thrown at him. He reminisces about food being thrown at him and wonders why. He takes his daughter to public picnic where she tears her ACL. Mike and Noreen agree to go to therapy, which then leads to an argument about trust. Dave accompanies his father to another doctors visit, followed by an archery montage and Mike having dinner with Don the councilor and him taking pictures of Mike.S: All of the weird dialog.-He's make $240K for 2hrs of work and a large public persona… That's BS. (Bereau of Labor Statistics says annual median pay in 2016 for a meteorologist was $92,460. According to ZipRecruiter, average pay for a meteorologist in 2021, in Illinois is $72,587.-After the picnic, the “fight” is so dumb… Calling him a “pork butt” and a “dildo”? These are playground insults, felt unrehearsed.-Dave dropping he wrote a science fiction novel this late in the movie… Why? Weird plot device.-Told you that councilor was creepy as fuck.Dave and Shelly discuss archery vs. bow hunting. Dave reflects on the argument that possibly caused his divorce: tartar sauce. Dave gets good news about an interview at Hello America, goes to NYC to interview, bringing Shelly to connect more, and his dad for tests. Dave learns Mike has assaulted his councilor Don, Richard tells him he has Lymphoma, which leads to a living funeral and an attempt for Dave to reconcile with Noreen.S: Bow hunting does sound like fun. Moving target.-The internal monologue during the tartar sauce flashback was the only funny part of the movie.-There is WAY too much talk of a 12 year olds camel toe.-The Hello America interview was weirdly shot… Like, no one else was in there?-“Like a rock…”Dave seeks out Don, beats and threatens him. He meets with Mike at the food court for an insightful chat. Dave and Richard have an affirming conversation in Richards car; then we learn that shortly after Richard has died. There is a funeral and Dave offers some reflection. We finally see that Dave has taken the Hello America job in NYC, Mike completed his course, Shelly seems happy, and Noreen seems proud of Dave. Meanwhile, Dave moves on with some wisdom from Richard, “Easy doesn't enter into adult life…”S: The pie inner monologue was almost funny… When he realized clowns have pies thrown at them. He's a clown.-He's also fast food.-We see the start of the happy ending: Dave gets his dads affirmation.-During/after the funeral, we get this weird monologue about how he wanted to be this person, but eventually stopped trying, basically, and became who he is. Isn't that exactly how you become a shitty person? By not trying to be a better person?-The ending is still fucking bleak… “easy doesn't enter into adult life”OVERALL: The writing/dialogue was TERRIBLE. EVERYTHING felt forced, and uncomfortable. It never had a rhythm or beat, which made it VERY off putting.Webpage: https://theguysreview.simplecast.com/ EM: theguysreviewpod@gmail.com IG: @TheGuysReviewPod Twitter: @The_GuysReview FB: https://facebook.com/TheGuysReviewPod/ Please, rate and review us wherever you get your podcasts from!! Thank you, -The Guys
