Welcome to training with Kayce where we explore animal training and living our best lives with animals.
APE BT: 5 things to keep in mind when approaching animals for the first time - all animals 1) Approach 2) Perceptional appropriateness 3) Energy 4) Body language 5) Touch Hmmm... a bit rambling, tonight. That happens to me sometimes around 3 am, but I am wanting to start this conversation and I'll be honing this as we tease it out a bit. Please join the conversation and add to the comments. I am interested in what you think and in your experiences. Thanks. Copyright 2024 Kayce Cover, All rights reserved; Syn Alia Training System (SATS), synalia.com/press
No matter how you train, at some point you need to move an animal from the protected training area to the real world, whether that is on exhibit, in the show ring, or on the street. At that point, you need to consider your safety back up equipment (and skills!), and make sure that all are protected. This is crucial when you work with dangerous dogs (or other animals). Perception Modification is an amazing process, which empowers trainers to solve many of the most difficult training issues with a single protocol, in a matter of hours - or sometimes even minutes! But Perception Modification is the tip iof the iceberg. Here's a checklist: Are you - 1) effectively using dopamine to reinforce the behavior goal? 2) reliably getting buy in leading to self-management? 3) escaping the limitations of luring? 4) leveraging the use of vocabulary and language? 5) empowering the animal through mental mapping? 6) enriching the animal's life through granting choice? 7) elevating your partnership through developing your mutual culture? 8) on point to integrate two-way communication? 9) updating fine points of operant conditioning? 10) honing your reflexivity skills? If not, what is in your way?
Let's explore the use, and need, for punishment in animal training, highlighting its role, and definition, in operant conditioning. Let's talk about the rules of engagement, and the imperative of being judicious, correct, and fair, in applying this tool. And how are trainers supposed to learn these things if 'punisher' is a four letter word?

In this episode we hear Kayce looking at intelligence.
Some of the best animal people I know are happy to call themselves pet parents - they love their animals, they care for them, and their animals are family. But I think there is much more to this. I think that the nuance is important. Just as we can miss the moon if the rocket path is off by half a degree, in our desire to be the best partners to animals, I think we miss a really important point, when we designate ourselves in parent roles, rather than in collaborative roles. Thanks for hearing me out. Copyright 2023 Kayce Cover, All rights reserved, Syn Alia Training System (SATS), synalia.com/press
I think integrity needs to underwrite all activities with animals. Please join me to hear why, and how it protects us.

It is a huge benefit for animal and human, if the animal knows its body parts and can target with any body part, OR ANY BODY POINT. And it is so easy to do. I talk about it here. Again. Natural behavior, resilience, health, and the dog's needs are influencing and even directing the way we teach and care for dogs. This is a good thing and I am happy to be seeing this. The philosophy of SATS has always been one of mutuality: mutual respect, responsibility and benefit. So glad to see a maturation away from tool ideology and toward the documented and studied needs of the dogs.
Dedicated professionals in this swine research unit wanted to change the way pigs perceived blood draw procedures - and so they did. Amazing video from an amazing crew. All animals can benefit from learning to cooperate in their own care.

Most dogs can be great colleagues, companions and collaborators - with the proper support and education. But that support and education is not encompassed in an obedience class. An obedience class can be a great experience for both dog and owner, but it is not the solution to a behavioral problem. So what is? Join me to explore an easy way to develop the best of dogs.
