In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, host Kris McCauley sits down with the Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter Receptionist Catherine Moore. As a 501c3 non-profit organization, the shelter takes in animals from Tuscaloosa City, Northport City, and the areas covered by the scope of Tuscaloosa County. Catherine stresses the importance of raising awareness about the benefits of spay-neuter for dogs and cats in the local communities. After witnessing animal overpopulation in their area, she feels the need for long-term solutions to be conducted in places where such problematic issues remain prevalent. Partnering with local rescues, the shelter coordinates the transportation of animals in need of homes and temporary places to stay. The shelter also organizes various programs that provide opportunities for rehoming animals through digital communication. Collaborating with local veterinary clinics, they provide medical procedures such as spay-neuter to address animal overpopulation. “We're big on social media, and it's one of the best ways to get the word out and to help more!” - Catherine Moore Tune in to find out how you can help address the animal overpopulation issue in the South today! Service dogs have become a very public and vital part of our society. But there’s another area that doesn’t get quite as much hand-waving. Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) includes companion animals as a part of the patient’s therapy in a treatment plan designed by a health care professional. For instance, a child might be more willing to toss a ball for the dog to fetch, than follow a human therapist’s instructions to rehab a painful injury. A pioneer in the field, Nancy Stanley first introduced "Animal Therapy" to severely handicapped children and to convalescent hospitals for the elderly in 1982 after founding Tender Loving Zoo, a nonprofit organization. She talks about her experiences, the benefits of pet therapy, and new gift book PILLOW WITH A HEARTBEAT, narrated by therapy dog Truffles.
