This episode takes us to the Cornish coast, hence the change of intro sounds for this episode and the inclusion of some wails from a hungry grey seal pup. Grey seals are globally rare and the UK is lucky to have a third of the global population. They are particularly near and dear to my heart after I did a project with the fantastic Cornwall Seal Group Research Trust a few years ago and our efforts got some great public support from a Cornwall-based brand called Finisterre. Make sure to check out the organization through the link in our show notes. Our human guest for this episode is the great Hugo Tagholm. Hugo is a massively influential voice and leader in ocean activism in the UK and was my way in to understanding the issues facing the oceans and waterways of my new home in England after moving here a few years ago. He led Surfers Against Sewage into becoming a full fledged charity and one of the most respected and trusted voices when it comes to water issues in the UK. After an incredible run at SAS, Hugo became the Executive Director for the UK at Oceana. In this episode, we talk about the ocean as a great leveler, working with nature rather than against it, how we can spur a just transition to transform our economy and culture for a more environmentally friendly future, and even a little bit of what Hugo talked about with His Majesty the King, King Charles, when he was the Prince of Wales and became a patron of Surfers Against Sewage. At the time of this recording, the King's cancer diagnosis was not known and so myself and I am sure Hugo wish him a full and lasting recovery. King Charles has been and continues to be a powerful voice in the UK and globally on environmental issues. Many thanks to Hugo for taking time to chat. Make sure to check out the links for a link to Oceana's latest campaign video in support of banning bottom trawling in our Marine Protected Areas. This week we're back in the UK talking to countryside ranger and wildlife presenter, Ajay Tegala. Ajay has a degree in Environmental Conservation and nine years' experience working in nature conservation. He was a ranger on Britain's first coastal reserve, Blakeney Point for many years and currently works at Wicken Fen, Britain's oldest and very first nature reserve (1899); alongside 100 Konik ponies and 50 Highland cattle! Growing up in East Anglia, Ajay became interested in wetland birds. Through his career in nature conservation, he went on to work with seabirds, in particular terns; monitoring their breeding behaviour and contributing to national monitoring programmes. He has managed and studied England's largest Grey Seal rookery, off the Norfolk coast. Ajay champions and monitors the success of habitat creation for nature, which partners well with his great love for the fenland landscape, and is passionate about its restoration. Ajay has promoted beach cleans in East Anglia, gardening for wildlife and clothing for Cotswold Outdoor, appearing in shop windows across the UK. Ajay has chalked-up over 15 appearances across the five main channels, including the popular BBC nature documentaries ‘Countryfile', ‘Coast' and ‘Winterwatch' plus a live appearance on ‘Springwatch: Unsprung' and many, many more! He is currently undertaking a talent development placement with the BBC Natural History Unit working on Springwatch 2021. Elton John and his lyricist Bernie Taupin wrote so many great songs over the years that it was impossible to pick a single one for Strong Songs. So, why not do two? Kirk dives into a pair of classics by the storied songwriting duo, talking about Elton's chameleon-like voice, his love of pedal tones and embrace of the circle of fourths, the fascinating relationship between lyricist and songwriter, and what it means for a song to sound "piano-y." Both songs by: Elton John with lyrics by Bernie Taupin Album 1: Madman Across the Water, 1971 Listen/Buy: Apple Music | Amazon | Spotify Album 2: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, 1973 Listen/Buy: Apple Music | Amazon | Spotify ------ ALSO FEATURED: "I'm Still Standing," "Your Song," and "Grey Seal," all by Elton John and Bernie Taupin. "I Want Love" by John/Taupin, as performed in the 2019 movie Rocketman. NEW THEME MUSIC! Strong Songs has a new theme song! It'll evolve a bit over the next few episodes as Kirk adds a couple more musicians to the mix, so that should be fun. Hope you dig it. Is the increase of Grey Seal Population on Cape Cod causing problems with humans? I was asked to answer a question as to whether the science says Grey Seals are preventing the cod stocks in the Northeast from recovering. I answer this question using a Canadian example. Who Should Lead the Ocean Conservation Movement? Bill Nye has been undergoing heavy criticism from the non-scientific AND the scientific community as to whether he should lead the Climate Change science movement. Should he be a leader? Is he harming the movement? I also address this during the show. Trump trumps the EPA Again! He is at it again. Replacing scientific experts with fossil fuel industry representatives...ugh! Kimberly, Neil and Reid of The Band Perry are keeping quite busy these days. Not only are they in the middle of their “We Are Pioneers” world tour, but they are very excited about the new season of N-B-C’s hit show “The Voice,” which premiered this week. The sibling trio will advise Team Blake during the upcoming battle rounds, and hope their turn to pay it forward works out for the contestants. You can also find The Band Perry on the 40th anniversary re-mastered edition of Elton John’s 1973 album “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.” Their version of “Grey Seal” is included on the project, set to released March 24th. They also have two nominations for the upcoming ACM Awards. The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s annual “All For The Hall” fundraiser returns to Los Angeles next week. The program will again follow the spontaneous “guitar pull” format with performances and stories from Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris, Heart, and Jason Mraz. The “All For The Hall” event was originally launched in 2005 to provide a safety net for the institution and its work. Jake Owen and a few of his friends joined together for “Concert for the Cause,” which raised over 200-thousand dollars for the non-profit “Kids Cancer Alliance.” Frankie Ballard, Jana Kramer, Jason Sturgeon, and many more joined in the show, which also featured live and silent auctions, plus a special after party. For more information on the organization, check out Kids Cancer Alliance dot org. Travis Tritt has been added to the cast of “As Dreamers Do,” an independent film based on the life of Walt Disney. Travis will act as the narrator for the project, and he’s also written a song called “That’s What Dreamers Do.” Look for the movie to be released later this year. American Idol winner Scotty McCreery has joined up with the “12-14 Foundation” as a ‘national goodwill ambassador.’ The Foundation was started in Newtown, Connecticut to promote performing arts to help communities recover from tragic events. Look for Scotty to help promote the foundation’s mission and fundraising efforts through personal appearances and social media.
