In this week's episode we talk with Grosse Pointe School Board President, Joseph Herd. We discuss diversity, sports, education, and all things in between. During our candid conversation Herd's stories and insights were quite inspiring. Just when you think his extensive background is beyond admirable, Herd's love and dedication for his family and community truly takes the cake. As he speaks about raising his sons and giving back to the community, Herd pays homage to the phrase "each one teach one." Joseph Herd graduated from Michigan State University with a BA in Criminal Justice and earned his master's degree in Social Work from the University of Michigan. He retired in June of 2020, after 28 years of service, most recently as the Deputy Chief for the Eastern District of Michigan United States Probation Department. He and his wife Verlona have two children that are graduates of Grosse Pointe North High School and a current middle schooler. Joseph has served on the selection committee for the North High School Principal and Assistant Principal/Athletic Director positions. Mr. Jacobs has worked for the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission where he assisted in litigating class action discrimination cases against Chipotle, Bloomberg and Bank of America. Further, he has worked for New York State Attorney General's office, the United States Air Force Judge Advocate General, and served as judicial intern for the Honorable Walter H. Rice on the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio.

The Avalon Village is a sustainable eco-village being built in Highland Park, Mich., led by guest Shamayim “Mama Shu” Harris. The village consists of 20 parcels of land and 4 houses where everything is built with recycled materials and green infrastructure. Created for female entrepreneurs, the village is highlighted by a village hall and buildings made of shipping containers, with the project's next phase being the construction of the Homework House, which is expected to open in September 2019. Welcoming Everyone Grosse Pointe (We GP) is a community-based organization that was founded after the 2016 election to resist attacks on civil and human rights. We GP provides opportunities for social engagement, community building, political engagement and activism. On June 22, 2019, We GP will host their third annual Grosse Pointe Pride March, beginning at Grosse Pointe High School at 10 a.m. and ending at Maire Elementary School. When Republicans changed the unemployment laws in 2013, they created one of the most restrictive unemployment programs in the entire country. In this episode, Professor Rachael Kohl, leader of the Workers' Rights Clinic at the University of Michigan Law School, discusses some problems and solutions with Michigan's Unemployment Insurance Agency. The program works pro-bono and represents 200-300 Michiganders a year who have been wrongfully denied unemployment benefits. Sen.
