Today, we're diving into the vibrant summer scene in Detroit. Devon and Jer kick things off by discussing the new restaurant and bar scene, including the exciting opening of Easy Peasy, a new concept located in the old Cornerstone space downtown. They're now offering a lunch sushi program from Detroit Sushi, making it a must-visit spot. We also highlight the Monarch Club's fantastic cocktails and the importance of using reservation apps to snag last-minute tables at popular spots. Jer shares his recent experience at Coriander, a restaurant on the far east side of the city by the canals, which has upped its game with an excellent Marrow burger and a busy, vibrant atmosphere. For those with kids, Devon offers some tips on finding family-friendly restaurants in Detroit, emphasizing the need for space and a lively atmosphere. He mentions Supergeil as a great example of a kid-friendly spot with outdoor space. There's a new coffee shop opening at Post in Detroit on Kercheval near Grosse Pointe Park, adding to the growing list of cool daytime spots in the area. We also discuss the transformation of a Starbucks into a Lucky Coffee in the village of Grosse Pointe, expanding the brand's footprint. Summer events are in full swing, and we talk about the Brisa Bar in Campus Martius, which offers a casual vibe with small bites and tropical drinks. Capitol Park's new art installation and the upcoming Grand Circus Gala and Bourbon Garden are also on our radar, promising fun and unique experiences in the city. And in other news, Michigan has surpassed California to become the largest cannabis market in the United States by sales volume. We discuss the implications of this milestone and what it means for the state's economy and tax revenue. As always, we appreciate your feedback and support. On January 24, 2012, the body of Jane Bashara, a 56-year-old resident of ritzy Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan, was found dead in the backseat of her Mercedes SUV in a seedy area of Detroit. The police first went to interview her husband, Bob Bashara, who came from an extremely prominent Lebanese family in the area. Bob denied anything to do with his wife's murder. Eventually, the finger was pointed at a man named Joe Gentz, a developmentally disabled handyman who worked for Bob. But as the police continued to investigate the case, they would discover that Bob's squeaky clean Rotary Club life was not as it seemed. Bob was involved in affairs, tax evasion, a secret BDSM lifestyle, had ties with the Italian Mafia, and definitely did not want a divorce from Jane; something Jane was pursuing. Investigators were certain Bob had something to do with his wife's death, but did he work alone? Or did he have an accomplice in Joe Gentz? 44. Brigit Jogan: Experiencing God on the mountaintop

OCF Crosspoint Podcast

// Episode 44 show notes What comes to mind when you hear that someone had a “mountaintop experience”? Maybe you think about Moses, who hiked back down the mountainside literally glowing because he had been in the presence of God. Or Peter, James, and John—the inner circle of Jesus—who saw Jesus in His true, divine nature as he was transfigured right in front of them. You might recall that was an event that impacted Peter so deeply that he wanted to camp out and build a few memorials for Jesus, Elijah, and Moses. The point is this, we regard mountaintop experiences as those moments when God moves in such a mighty and unexpected way, that, at least figuratively, we come back glowing like Moses or wanting to build a memorial like Peter. And while a mountaintop experience can take place anywhere, for some people, such an event actually takes place on a mountaintop. Take for example my guest today—First Class Cadet Brigit Jogan, a senior at the United States Coast Guard Academy. During her time at Rocky Mountain High this past summer, Brigit hiked the summit of Mount Antero in Colorado’s Collegiate Peaks, and it was during that physical climb to the mountaintop that she experienced the Spirit of God moving in a mighty way. Today, Brigit is going to talk about that experience as she shares her story. // What we talked about Here’s an outline of the questions Brigit answered this episode: Tell me about where you’re from, and why the Coast Guard?  As you look back over your time at the Coast Guard Academy, what’s academy life been like for you? What are some things you’ve learned about yourself, and what are some challenges you’ve faced?  Share a little about your spiritual journey. When did you accept Jesus and begin following Him? What’s it like being a Cadet and also being a Christian? Are there difficulties you’ve experienced when it comes to integrating your faith into your life in the Coast Guard?  Talk about your involvement in OCF at the Coast Guard Academy—how you first heard about OCF and why you decided to give it a try and then stay involved? Talk more about what it is you do with the ministry team.  Tell me more about your Rocky Mountain High experience. What was it like? What sorts of things would best equip you to live out your calling as someone who is very early in her military career? If listeners were going to take away only one thing from our conversation today, what would you hope that it would be?  // About my guest  Originally from Grosse Pointe Park, MI, Brigit Jogan is currently a 1/c cadet (senior) at the United States Coast Guard Academy. She participates actively in OCF as cadet president, studies electrical engineering, swims distance freestyle, and frequently shares terrible jokes with those unfortunate enough to be in earshot. Her other hobbies include completing adult coloring books and looking at pictures of her beautiful dog, Phinn. In the future, she hopes to continue her education through the Coast Guard and to continue to stay very involved with ministry, with whatever adventures that entails.

On today’s episode, we speak with EJDevCo CEO Derric Scott and Jefferson East Chief Exec Josh Elling about what the organization learned from the process, how it’s working with would-be tenants to best serve the immediate needs of the neighborhood, and how the for-profit development unit helps expand what the organization can accomplish. Scott says East Jefferson Development Corp. owns or controls 87% of the properties located within Jefferson-Chalmers, a once-thriving business district that stretches along Jefferson from Lenox Street to Alter Road. The district is filled with some incredible architecture, but also many vacant and blighted buildings. It’s also home to the first protected bike lanes in the city. Residents who came out to the workshops expressed a desire for things including a new first-run movie theater, a Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s, and a redevelopment of the formerly whites-only Vanity Ballroom as an inclusive mixed-use asset to the community. Tonight at 9PM EST, we're off to Grosse Pointe Park (near Detroit for those who don't know) to visit with Julie and Rana (RJ), owners of Recolte Meads. Recolte Meads has been open for about 2 years, and opened their tasting room on April 23 this year. Julie has been making mead for several years. Back before she started making mead, she had a tenant who couldn’t make rent, and in the course of her story, mentioned that her dad owned an apiary. And Julie had her tenant pay her rent in honey! She ended up with 8 five gallon pails of the golden nectar, and *voila* she started making mead, in 5 gallon batches. Julie has been in the beer and brewing business for over 25 years. She did both hands on and other related jobs in the industry, and learned a lot from the folks doing the brewing. She also owned a brewery that had a license to make wine and mead (which they did), though the focus was mostly on the beer. She started seeing the mead industry grow, and wanted to expand mead sales. After she left the brewery, she was approached by a friend to open another brewery in downtown Detroit. She suggested a meadery instead, since there were so many breweries out there. The friend had never had mead, so he stopped by to do some tasting of Julie’s meads. At this point she had been making mead for about 2 years. So, her friend, impressed with mead, agreed to do a meadery. But Julie ended up talking it over with her BFF Rana (RJ) and they decided to partner up and start their own meadery. They planned, Youtubed and Googled the heck out of starting a production facility, and finally created a business plan that worked for them. They opened their production facility 2 years ago in Sterling Heights, and have been producing mead since that time. When they were in the building process, they were told that having the meadery downtown wasn’t going to happen due to cost to build being beyond the budget. So, they changed their business plan to start distribution as soon as their mead was ready. And they did all this while working full time jobs at the hospital! Julie is a Surgical Tech and RJ is a Certified Sterile Processing Tech. And Julie is raising 4 kids! That’s dedication!! So, once they decided to distribute, and were in the process, they got a call from that same friend, asking them to look at a space in a building they’d just bought in Grosse Point Park. Julie and RJ did, and fell in love. And, that changed things, and they decided to hold off distribution while they got the tasting room ready, and opened their new tasting room April 23. They are using Michigan wildflower honey, and local fruits in their meads. Recolte is French for ‘harvest’, so it’s a good name for this venture. They are serving food (you should *see* the pics they post on their Facebook feed! delish!), and have evening events and board games at the tasting room. They even have a record player (retro!) and encourage guests to bring their favorite albums to spin on a weekly event. They are planning to sell bricks in their front wall to raise money for a local non-profit and to help with equipment purchasing. We'll be talking with them about their adventures as meadery owners, and digging into what their doing with their meads, and what they've learned about making great mead. When Jane Bashara was found strangled to death in the back of her SUV nobody knew what to make of it. Things like this simply didn't happen in Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan, a wealthy community of million-dollar homes. The Bashara's, now empty nesters in their mid 50's, also were not the type of people who were found murdered in a parking lot. They were the type of people who volunteered for charity when they weren't hanging out at the country club.No one suspected that there were deep dark secrets between them that would end in murder.

When Joe turned himself in, he told the cops everything— including how he was hired for a hit by Jane’s husband. His payment: $2,000 and a used Cadillac.Born into one of Michigan’s elite families, Bob was sweeping out the back alley of a property he owned when his wife was being killed. He made sure the bartenders at the Hard Luck Lounge saw him there at the time of her murder. He’d often brought girlfriends by the same bar, and for the last year had been seen with one Rachel Gillett—riding around town in her convertible, even showing up at BDSM events in the suburbs of Detroit. .When Joe Gentz confessed, his 67 IQ and barfly reputation made him less than credible.
