On today's show, we hear that public school enrollment in Arkansas is at a 20-year low, and some educational leaders say economic pressures and the state voucher program are playing a role. We also investigate another critical aspect of the LEARNS Act: third-grade reading proficiency in Arkansas. Plus, we visit with Fayetteville High School's Bulldog Buddies.
Louisiana has passed a number of laws since the pandemic meant to improve students' reading scores — and they appear to be working. In 2019, Louisiana's fourth graders ranked 50th in the country for reading. As of last year, they'd risen to 16th. WWNO and WRKF's education reporter Aubri Juhasz joins us with more. Earlier this month, Louisiana Rep. Troy Carter and Rhode Island Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse paid a visit to the Bayou State. They addressed problems like climate change, failing infrastructure, and the weather-driven insurance crisis. Louisiana Considered's Managing Producer Alana Schreiber caught up with them at a construction site where they discussed finding both short and long-term solutions to these issues.___Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Alana Schreiber. This edWeb podcast is sponsored by Age of Learning. The webinar recording can be accessed here.Across the country, too many children begin kindergarten already behind in the skills essential for early reading success. By third grade, the gap only widens—students who start school unprepared are far less likely to meet grade-level expectations and more likely to struggle throughout their academic journey. But what if we could change that trajectory before kindergarten even begins? This edWeb podcast explores how districts, early learning coalitions, and educators can address one of the most pressing challenges in education today: ensuring every child is kindergarten ready. National and local leaders discuss what it takes to build strong foundations in literacy, the evidence behind successful early learning interventions, and the impact of getting it right from the very start.Join us to learn how your district can take the first step toward ensuring every child enters kindergarten ready to succeed. Key discussion topics include:Why kindergarten readiness is one of the most critical, and overlooked, determinants of lifelong learningWhat rigorous research reveals about early literacy interventions that accelerate student growthLessons from Florida's early learning coalitions on implementing and scaling solutions that workPractical strategies district and state leaders can adopt now to close readiness gaps before they widenMeasuring what matters: Using data to drive kindergarten readiness outcomesThis edWeb podcast is of interest to PreK school leaders, district leaders, and education technology leaders.Age of LearningHelping children build a strong foundation for academic success and a lifelong love of learningDisclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Missy Tannen is the co-founder and Chief Product Officer of Boll & Branch, the luxury bedding brand that made organic, ethically made sheets a household staple.Missy's path to entrepreneurship began far from business. After eight years as a third-grade teacher, she stepped away to raise her three daughters, never imagining she would one day build one of the most successful bedding brands in the country. What started as a simple search for better sheets led Missy and her husband, Scott, to uncover an industry lacking transparency. Determined to do better, they learned everything from cotton to supply chains from scratch and launched Boll & Branch in 2014 with a mission to create beautiful, responsibly made bedding at an honest price. What began at their kitchen table has since grown into a $200 million brand, sold at Nordstrom and Bloomingdale's, with stores expanding nationwide. In this week's episode, Missy shares her transformation from teacher to entrepreneur, the pivotal moments that shaped Boll & Branch's early years, and how one unexpected newspaper story changed everything. We get into the scrappy stuff—wiring their savings to a factory they had never visited, making tech packs in PowerPoint, washing fabric samples in her laundry room, and missing a holiday launch after a production disaster. Missy reflects on building their supply chain from the ground up, facing zero-sales days before the brand took off overnight, and learning to balance growth, motherhood, and self-doubt while staying true to her purpose. This conversation is your reminder that you do not need experience or a roadmap to build something extraordinary, only grit, heart, and the courage to keep going.*Note from Yasmin: After five amazing years of weekly episodes, I'm shifting Behind Her Empire to an every-other-week schedule. This new rhythm gives me a bit more space to focus on building my own empire and to bring you even deeper, more intentional episodes. I'm so grateful to have you on this journey and can't wait to keep sharing powerful stories every other week.In this episode, we'll talk to Missy about:* Missy's upbringing and early teaching career. [03:31]* How the idea for Boll & Branch came about. [07:30]* Sourcing ethical cotton and building fair trade supply chains. [15:48]* The process of finding the right partners. Burke Swanson brings the heart, humor, and metaphysical musings to this episode in a way that's rare and deeply refreshing. From his early days as a third-grader doing stand-up at a summer camp to stepping into the Netflix universe as Hopper Jr. in Stranger Things: The First Shadow, Burke shares the moments that shaped him—and the ones that continue to ground him. We go well beyond credits to talk about the importance of ensemble energy, the spiritual nature of collaboration, and how 65% of his audience are seeing theater for the first time thanks to this production. That's no small ripple effect. We also talk about what it means to chase artistic expression when you're not even sure what form it'll take, and how acting might just be the day job that funds your actual art. Whether it's football plays as choreography, crying backstage during a surprise Season 5 trailer drop, or reflecting on experimental poetry zines, this one is full of unexpected gems. Burke is equal parts philosopher, clown, and community-builder—and it shows in every minute of this conversation. Burke Swanson is currently starring as James Hopper Jr. in Stranger Things: The First Shadow at Broadway's Phoenix Theatre. His previous credits include George McFly in the Back to the Future tour and his Broadway debut in The Rose Tattoo. He is also a founding member of JMP Collective, where he produces experimental performance and multimedia work. Louisiana is the only state where students have gotten better at reading since 2019. Officials credit new laws, and now, the final piece is taking effect: holding back third graders who are behind in reading. Education reporter Aubri Juhasz explains how schools are trying to help kids pass the test. Then, she joins WRKF's Karen Henderson to follow up on the state's new third-grade reading law. Four ensembles are gearing up to open the New Orleans Ballet Association's 2025-26 season. Upcoming performances include “Dance Theatre of Harlem,” and “Argentina's Tango After Dark.” Executive director Jenny Hamilton tells us what to expect at the series of performances. The Deep South continues to be left out of the tech industry boom.Yes there are exceptions like Huntsville, Alabama, but states like Missisisppi and Louisiana have not seen nearly as many high paying jobs the tech industry has bought elsewhere.Stephan Bisaha of the Gulf States Newsroom reports on the advantages of being a tech company in Mississippi…and what's holding the state back.__Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Diane Mack. Missy and Scott Tannen founded Boll & Branch, risking their life savings to create a sustainable, luxury bedding brand with full supply chain transparency. In 10 years, the company became the largest consumer of organic cotton, generating over $200M in annual revenue. The brand has gained a loyal following, including the Obamas, who outfitted Air Force One with their products. They've expanded into new home categories, opened stores, and partnered with Prabal Gurung for the first organic cotton dress at the Met Gala.
What if a simple classroom activity could unite generations across decades? In this episode of Making It in the Toy Industry, we're celebrating 30 years of Blurt with its inventor, Tim Walsh, and uncovering the incredible story behind the game that connects Boomers to Gen Alpha.Discover how a third-grade classroom exercise—reading dictionary definitions aloud—sparked the creation of a timeless game that's built kids' vocabularies, brought families together, and even supported memory retention for older adults. Tim takes us through the evolution of Blurt, from its humble beginnings as a prototype called DeFUNitions to becoming a household staple. But this episode isn't just about one game. It's about the unsung heroes of the toy industry—inventors who remain “criminally unrecognized” despite shaping cultural phenomena like UNO and LEGO. Tim and I explore why toy creators deserve the same recognition as musicians and authors, how Euro games are leading the way in celebrating designers, and what the industry can learn from them.Tim also shares invaluable lessons for aspiring toy creators: why resilience and persistence are critical, why timing can make or break a product, and why you should always focus on generating multiple ideas instead of pinning your hopes on just one. You'll also hear how toys like Operation have inspired careers in fields like healthcare and engineering and how play is essential for creativity, connection, and overcoming life's challenges.Whether you're a toy enthusiast, an entrepreneur, or someone who values the power of play, this episode will leave you inspired to think differently about toys—and the brilliant minds behind them.Listen for these Important Moments! As you watch Colleen Pfitzinger, a member of Northwest Christian's third grade team, around campus, you might be tempted to think she's a bit reserved. But, that's not the story that's coming out of her classroom.Nope. For years, students have reported quite the opposite: that Colleen is not reserved, rather, she's a riot in the classroom...that Colleen knows how to make learning fun. And, when learning is fun, students cannot get enough.Today, we have the chance to hear from Colleen: her testimony, her strategies for teaching, and her reflections on where we are in the Red Letter Challenge--Matthew 8.To download your own copy of the Spring 2024 edition of the Red Letter Challenge, please follow this link.To learn more about the Red Letter Challenge and the extrinsic incentives the school is using to remind the students of the virtues of an intrinsic desire for daily time in God's word, please click here. Why do some people oppose them despite all of the positive evidence? How have we seen states implement them as part of a successful comprehensive early literacy policy? And where are we seeing legislation advancing in the states right now? After sharing the weekly state action highlights, hosts Tom Greene, Ashley Mullins and our regional advocacy director for the Southeast, Miranda Williams, take a deep dive into the role of third grade reading proficiency as a critical milestone in a child's educational journey. Tune into Statehouse Spotlights as we address how such third-grade retention laws can play a crucial role in promoting academic success and ensuring that all students can thrive beyond the schoolhouse. Christmas 1985, Santa brought Robert Wilson all three Weird Al records that he'd put out thus far. So I brought my handheld tape recorder to his house on the corner and held it to the speaker as Robert put the records on. To this day, when I listen to these songs, I can still hear us failing not to laugh out loud, especially on "My Bologna" and George of the Jungle Gotta Boogie Buy Me a Condo Slime Creatures from Outer Space Such a Groovy Guy King of Suede This Is the Life Mr. Popeil Mr. Frump in the Iron Lung

This week we're reaching the end of production season 13/starting broadcast season 14 with a tale spurred on by hate of reality TV (not to be confused with the three other eps just like it). This time Bart loses his mind from TV overload and gets sent to third grade to join the advancing Lisa. Turns out they adjust to it differently in a plot that brings us back to Capital City with some returning season 2 stars. All that, plus robot history, googling Japanese pronunciation, and a couple of fart jokes in a weird episode!
