Well hello again my friends! If you've been listening in recent weeks I hope you have enjoyed these talks from Future Church Conference. I am excited to share that a few of us met this last week to start planning the next one — it's going to be great. Follow New City Church or Spiritual Misfits on Instagram for a date announcement soon. This will be the last piece of content for now from the inaugural Future Church Conference — and it's a little different. On the evening of the day we asked 5 different speakers to give a 7 minute pitch for an idea they think is vital for the future church. So now   you have the opportunity to hear these fantastic talks — micro in length, but each one packs a punch.  Keep listening and you will hear:JOYCE TANGI on anti-racismJESSICA MORTHORPE on climate justiceKAREN PACK on LGBTQIA+ InclusionMITCH FORBES on the place of tradition as we move forwardJOEL HOLLIER on being trauma-informedAnd to round it there are a couple of songs at the end from Marion St — you may remember Gabi and Mikali who have previous been on the podcast (if you didn't catch that one go back and listen to those legends). So there is a lot of good stuff jam-packed into this episode. Before we jump in my dear friends, listen up. I'm about to have a couple weeks off after a very big start to the year. Normally I'd line a couple of replay episodes — but as I mentioned last week we are just about to launch a Spiritual Misfits rebrand. And so, here's what's going to happen. For the next 2 or 3 weeks there will be a Spiritual-Misfits-shaped-hole in your podcast player. But make sure you're subscribed — because after that we're going to pop back into your feed with a new look, a new website and plenty of amazing and important new conversations coming your way. Between now and then, hit up our extensive back-log and catch up on any episodes you haven't heard yet. Some recommendations: as we continue to witness and grieve the horrendous genocide the Israeli government is committing in Palestine, can I suggest listening to my friend Sara M. Saleh's episode if you haven't? Or if you want to participate in non-violent love and resistance in this world listen to the episode with Jarrod McKenna. There are so many others I could suggest, but those both feel timely. We'll be back in a few weeks! Until then, big love and remember — you are not alone.   Sign up to our mailing list:https://spiritualmisfits.com.au/Join our online Facebook community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/spiritualmisfitspodcastSupport the pod:https://spiritualmisfits.com.au/support-us/Send us an email: Spiritualmisfits@outlook.comView all episodes at: https://spiritualmisfits.buzzsprout.com

Hello good people,In January this year…which feels like a long time ago right now….a group of us hosted the first ever Future Church conference. It was a fantastic day — we had people travel from South Australia, Queensland, Victoria…converging in Redfern Town Hall for an exploration of what the church of tomorrow could look like at its most expansive, welcoming and imaginative. We delved into some heavy topics, but it was a really inspiring and wonderful space of connection and possibility. There will be another Future Church Conference — if you want to make sure you don't miss any announcements about that give New City Church a follow on the socials — or even feel free to send an email to spiritualmisfits@outlook.com and we will make sure you're in the loop when a date is announced. In the meantime, I'm going to be playing some of the talks from last time here on the podcast. They were all brilliant, in my opinion, and are well worth sharing around and using as the basis for ongoing conversations.  Joel Hollier was a major force in instigating Future Church Conference, along with the crew at New City Church. Hosts Adolph Mongo, Jim Nardone and Allan Lengel talk with Adam Hollier, Democratic candidate for the 13th Congressional District, who argues that Democratic incumbent Congressman Shri Thanedar spends more of his budget on mailings, robocalls and billboards than on staff to serve constituents.Hollier, who appeared Thursday on the videocast/podcast of "Detroit in Black and White" (see show below), says most Michigan Congress members have a staff of 20 or so to serve constituents, but Thanedar only has a few dedicated to constituent services. He accuses Thanedar of being more committed to getting re-elected and spending money promoting himself than on doing his job.Thanedar responded Friday afternoon via email:"Our office is typically staffed with 20 team members including 11 full-time staff, 1 part-time staff, 6 interns and 2 fellows. This staffing level has allowed us to address over 1400 constituent cases with 88% completion rate, and a response time of 24 to 48 hours."On the legislative front, 17 bills were sponsored in the first 15 months, two of which passed in the house and one signed by President Biden into law, over 300 bills co-sponsored, and we  communicated to over hundred thousand constituents on a regular basis."Additionally, following the 2020 redistricting in Michigan, (My) current district now includes areas previously served by Brenda Lawrence (40%), Debbie Dingell (26%), and Rashida Tlaib (34%). This restructuring led to considerable confusion among constituents, both within and outside our new boundaries. As a result, my office received calls from constituents of neighboring congresswomen and vice versa. To address this, we significantly ramped up our outreach efforts through various media. Which resulted in a quadrupling of constituent calls from January 2023 to January 2024."

Americans have intimate relationships with their cellphones. A recent report found 89% of Americans say they check their phones within the first 10 minutes of waking up, and 60% sleep with their phone at night. And during the day, nearly one-third of American adults reported being online "almost constantly" in 2021, up from 21% in 2015. "I remember being attached to [my phone] and when I was texting my girlfriend, I remember the screen just kind of came alive," said Jose Briones, an advocate of digital minimalism. "I get this rush of, 'Wow, like, somebody cares about me.' And I put a lot of my value not on the person necessarily or the notification that I got, but also on the phone, because the phone is the medium through which I receive this amazing, loving text." But its not just phones holding our gaze. Watches, doorbells, even many refrigerators are now "smart." Partly in response to how ubiquitous this technology has become in the fabric of modern life, Joe Hollier co-founded Light, a company that sells minimalist cellphones. "There's no social media, no infinite feed of any kind, clickbait news, and there's no email," Hollier told Under the Radar. "So, really all of the things the phone does — calling, texting, setting an alarm — are just really utilitarian based. And the idea is that you're not pulling out the phone. So, we like to say it's a phone designed to be used as little as possible, because it's about the time and the space that it gives you to not be staring at a screen." Hollier is one of a number of Americans attempting to separate themselves from the seemingly inescapable reach of technology. These digital minimalists are willing to change their habits to go back to a simpler, less technology-centered lifestyle. "We can decide how much technology we embrace, how we embrace it, and how we really find the value in our life," said Andrew Maynard, professor of advanced technology transitions at Arizona State University. "My camera is a fully manual camera and I get joy and pleasure out of that. ... That's a choice I make. And I think a lot of people forget that they can make these decisions for themselves, how much or how little technology they have in their lives. Of course, the difficulty is when we've got tech companies trying to push it down our throats, sometimes it's difficult to pull back from that." GUESTS Joe Hollier, co-founder of Light, a company that sells minimalist cellphones Jose Briones, digital minimalism YouTuber and advocate, moderator of the subreddit, “r/dumbphones” Andrew Maynard, professor of advanced technology transitions at Arizona State University

So stoked to have Joel Hollier and Steff Fenton return to the podcast! (If you haven't listened to their previous episodes I strongly recommend you do so.)Joel and Steff co-pastor New City Church and from its inception they have been seeking to create a trauma-informed faith community. We had a conversation about what that actually means. What happens when churches are not consciously thinking about trauma and how to handle it? How do you approach bible and musical worship and prayer when the reality is that for some people, these are tied to traumatic religious experiences? And if you experienced trauma in a religious setting…is there hope of healing in one? These are the kind of questions that ground this conversation. And obviously, it's important to note that these are questions you journey with over the long term, rather than solve in one conversation. Having said that, there are definitely some really actionable and helpful thoughts and suggestions in this chat. So for those of you who help shape church spaces — please listen and use this to inform your conversations and decisions. And to those who have moved out of church spaces — I hope hearing this gives a glimmer of hope just knowing that there are people like Joel and Steff seeking to create safer spaces for faith and community. On this weeks episode we have a delightful and important conversation with the wonderful Joel Hollier. Joel is one clever fella with degrees in social work and theology, and a PhD in Behavioural Science. He's also a co-paster of New City Church. Joel has a story to tell that many of us need to hear — about his journey of being a gay Christian, originally preaching that this required celibacy though through grappling with scripture and the holy spirit coming to be very ok with being married to another man and continuing to follow Jesus and minister as a pastor. In this episode we do talk about trauma and the psychological harm and abuse sexually and gender diverse people can experience in spiritual settings. If these are part of your story, this episode may bring things up. So be gentle with yourself, decide if listening is going to be helpful and reach out for support if you need it. If you are a church leader, and/or if you hold a traditionalist view in these matters, this may be a confronting listen for you, but listening is the very least we can do for our LGBTQI+ siblings - so please, can I encourage you, take the time and listen well — trying to place aside your judgments at the outset.Joel is a deeply gracious, kind and inspiring human. I think we can all learn from him. Here is our conversation.

Donna and Orlando welcomes back State Senator Adam Hollier, State Representative Tenisha Yancey and state Capitol reporter for Bridge Michigan, Sergio Martínez-Beltrán. In 2018, Michigan voters elected to transfer the power of drawing the state's congressional and legislative districts from the political majority in the state legislature to an independent citizens redistricting commission. The measure was known as Prop 2. Since then, a bipartisan commission of 13 citizens were selected through an application process to become redistricting commissioners. On December 28th, the commission voted to adopt new state legislative and congressional maps for the state. Some say that Democrats now have a competitive advantage to knocking off the Republican majority. Critics in the community and the legislature say that the new maps marginalize the power of Black voters in Detroit.

Michigan families shouldn't have to go broke when their kids attend a public university, and it's time for the state to step up its investment in our schools. Sen.
