Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs: - 454 (in 'The Only Son of God') - The title “Son of God” signifies the unique and eternal relationship of Jesus Christ to God his Father: he is the only Son of the Father (cf. Jn1:14,18; 3:16,18); he is God himself (cf. Jn1:1). To be a Christian, one must believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God (cf. Acts 8:37; 1 Jn 2:23). - 2780 (in 'Father') - We can invoke God as “Father” because he is revealed to us by his Son become man and because his Spirit makes him known to us. The personal relation of the Son to the Father is something that man cannot conceive of nor the angelic powers even dimly see: and yet, the Spirit of the Son grants a participation in that very relation to us who believe that Jesus is the Christ and that we are born of God. - 1216 (in 'The Name of the Sacrament of Baptism') - “This bath is called enlightenment, because those who receive this [catechetical] instruction are enlightened in their understanding . . . .” Having received in Baptism the Word, “the true light that enlightens every man,” the person baptized has been “enlightened,” he becomes a “son of light,” indeed, he becomes “light” himself" (abbreviated) - 1996 (in 'Grace') - Our justification comes from the grace of God. Grace is favor, the free and undeserved help that God gives us to respond to his call to become children of God, adoptive sons, partakers of the divine nature and of eternal life. - 423 (in 'The Good News: God has sent his Son') - We believe and confess that Jesus of Nazareth, born a Jew of a daughter of Israel at Bethlehem at the time of King Herod the Great and the emperor Caesar Augustus, a carpenter by trade, who died crucified in Jerusalem under the procurator Pontius Pilate during the reign of the emperor Tiberius, is the eternal Son of God made man. He “came from God,” “descended from heaven,” and “came in the flesh.” For “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father. . . . And from his fullness have we all received, grace upon grace.” - 151 (in 'To Believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God') - For a Christian, believing in God cannot be separated from believing in the One he sent, his “beloved Son,” in whom the Father is “well pleased”; God tells us to listen to him. The Lord himself said to his disciples: “Believe in God, believe also in me.” We can believe in Jesus Christ because he is himself God, the Word made flesh: “No one has ever seen God; the only Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has made him known.” Because he “has seen the Father,” Jesus Christ is the only one who knows him and can reveal him. - 291 (in 'Creation-Work of the Holy Trinity') - 241 (in 'The Father revealed by the Son') - 612 (in 'The agony at Gethsemani') - 717 & 719 (in 'John, precursor, prophet and baptist') - 530 (in 'The Mysteries of Jesus' infancy') - 526 (in 'The Christmas Mystery') - 1692 (in 'Life in Christ') - 496 (in 'Mary's virginity' - 445 (in 'The Only Son of God') - 461 (in 'The Incarnation') Got a Bible question? In our second episode on Monasteries we're talking about Carthusians, millenarian religiosity, the co-option of radicalism by the mainstream, baroque splendour, Slow TV, retirement bungalows and whether Jesus owned the shirt on his back. In this episode we attempt to delve into the way that monastery buildings facilitate true Monastic obedience, and the way that different typologies of monastic domesticity might reflect different priorities in their orders. We also question how the Church harnessed the radical and dangerous power of popular religiosity by co-opting some movements into the status quo, such as the Franciscan Order, whilst burning countless Cathars and Waldensians as heretics. In this new 3 part series we’re trying something a little bit different, we’re going to try and think about the monastery from deep time up to the present day. The monastery is an almost unique architectural typology; in its continuity, the specificity of the brief and its legacy and afterlife. In this first episode we discuss the origins of the monastery, and the conflict that arises between differing visions of monastic life in 11-12th century France. What role should architecture, art, sculptural decoration, gold, marble and jewels play in the life of a monk sworn to poverty? How can the architecture and style of monasteries give voice to the ideologies of the monastic orders that live in them? We will be thinking about the afterlife of monasteries in the fervent imagination of modernism in later episodes. But "soul" also refers to the innermost aspect of man, that which is of greatest value in him, that by which he is most especially in God's image: "soul" signifies the spiritual principle in man. - 1034 (in 'Hell') - Jesus often speaks of "Gehenna" of "the unquenchable fire" reserved for those who to the end of their lives refuse to believe and be converted, where both soul and body can be lost. Jesus solemnly proclaims that he "will send his angels, and they will gather . . . all evil doers, and throw them into the furnace of fire," and that he will pronounce the condemnation: "Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire!" - 305 (in 'God Carries out his plan: Divine Providence') - Jesus asks for childlike abandonment to the providence of our heavenly Father who takes care of his children's smallest needs: "Therefore do not be anxious, saying, "What shall we eat?" or "What shall we drink?". . . Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well." - 1816 (in 'Faith') - The disciple of Christ must not only keep the faith and live on it, but also profess it, confidently bear witness to it, and spread it: "All however must be prepared to confess Christ before men and to follow him along the way of the Cross, amidst the persecutions which the Church never lacks." Service of and witness to the faith are necessary for salvation: "So every one who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven; but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven." - 14 (in 'Prologue') - Those who belong to Christ through faith and Baptism must confess their baptismal faith before men (abbreviated). - 2145 (in 'The Name of the Lord is Holy') - The faithful should bear witness to the Lord's name by confessing the faith without giving way to fear. Preaching and catechizing should be permeated with adoration and respect for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Got a Bible question? Mark & Sarah face their biggest challenge yet with an 11th century Japanese piece of literature which is said to be the first ever novel. The Tale of Genji is difficult to follow even in the origianl Japanese so the film chosen is 'Genji monogatari: Sennen no nazo' from 2011. A Japanese adaptation of the book which also adds in elements about the writing of the original novel.  All hope of pronouncing names correctly go out of the window and Sarah also gets some exciting news about her favourite film 'The Name of The Rose' The Genji in the film we watched was played by Tôma Ikuta The female Genji in a different film from 2001 was played by Yûki Amami

Susan is super excited about new kids’ books, while we prescribe reading with a singalong to help Tara resist a reading slump. We weigh binge-reading versus serialized reading, and find out that Mere might just become a serial reader. On the other hand, Jeannette just wants to binge read all the series. All of them. We then discuss at length Patrick Rothfuss’s lengthy 'The Name of the Wind,' and kindly request more answers and more 'Spice' in Kvothe’s life.

The curve of forgetting: battles over historical memory in the present-day Russia

There is a joke that has been doing rounds in the present-day Russia. Stalin's ghost appears to Vladamir Putin in a dream. Troubled by the crippled economy, Putin asks the Great Dead Leader for advice. "Round up and shoot all the democrats, and then paint the inside of the Kremlin blue," Stalin replies. "Why blue?" Putin asks. "Ha!" says Stalin. "I knew you wouldn't ask me about the first part."Stalin is back and not only in Putin's dreams. In 2009, 'The Name of Russia' broadcast by the State-owned TV channel, instituted a nation-wide search for a historical figure that best represented Russia of today. Modelled after BBC's '100 Greatest Britons', 'Name of Russia' had Stalin finish third in a contest, that commenced with five hundred potential candidates for the title. This result would have been inconceivable only a decade ago. And this is despite a surplus of archival and personal documents painstakingly chronicling the fate of millions of Soviet citizens killed, imprisoned, deported, sent to Gulag or forced to live in constant terror. In both the independent local and the international media, the apparent success of the government-led rehabilitation of the Soviet regime and most cynically, of the figure of Stalin, is rarely explained without a reference to some kind of a grotesque caricature -- it may be the masochistic craving for an iron fist deeply ingrained in Russian psyche or a case of the nationwide uber-forgetting of mythic proportions, or perhaps the powers of mass hypnosis attributed to the neo-totalitarian government of Putin-Medvedev. But what happens when we try to make sense of what is happening in today's Russia without a recourse to these or other convenient caricatures?
